About Munnar
The hill station of Munnar is situated in the Idukki District in the eastern part of Kerala, bordering
the state of Tamil Nadu. Popularly known as Kashmir of the South, Munnar is well connected to
all the cities in Kerala.
Munnar is located amidst mist-covered mountain ranges and evergreen forests of the Western
Ghats, at a varying altitude of 1,600 m (5,249 ft) to 1,800 m (5,906 ft) above mean sea level, at
the foot hills of Anamudi, the highest peak of the Western Ghats (2,695 m).
History of Munnar
The name Munnar was aptly given to this place since it is located at the convergence of three
rivers, which are Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala. The vast tea estates and coffee
plantations are the primary base for the flourishing economy of Munnar, besides tourism.
The recorded history of Munnar can be dated back to the 10th century, though many prehistoric relics linking Munnar to the Stone Age has been discovered. During the 17th century, a
group of people of Tamil origin, known by the name ‘Muthuvans’ migrated to Munnar and they
settled at Munnar and nearby areas.
By the 19th century, Munnar had become a part of Anchunadu, a small tribal kingdom believed
to be one among the earliest tribal settlements of South India. The fertile soil of Munnar was
used for the cultivation of cardamom, ginger, etc. in those days.
It was the Spanish planters who brought Munnar to the limelight and the first notable personality
to visit this place was the Duke of Wellington. John Daniel Munro from the British East India
Company visited Munnar around the middle of the 19th century and he gathered permission to
acquire 588 sq. km. of land from the Maharaja of Poonjar.
With the assistance from Kannan Thevar, the tribal chief of Anchunadu, Mr. Manro and his
companions took over some of the mountains and hills of Munnar. In 1895 Messrs Finlay Muir &
Company procured Munro’s land and in 1976 Tata-Finlay Ltd. procured it.
Things to do in Munnar
Munnar is an idyllic tourist destination with rolling hills, grasslands, dense forests, brooks and
rivulets, diverse flora and fauna, numerous waterfalls, lakes, tea plantations and walking trails.
Some of the major attractions of the region are CSI Church - the landmark of Munnar,
Eravikulam National Park, Attukal Waterfalls, Elephant Lake etc. Because of its scenic beauty
and pleasant climate Munnar has become a popular destination for honeymoons as well as
weekend getaways.
Food & Shopping in Munnar
Page 2/16
Munnar offers all types of cuisines for the tourist. There are many restaurants and small
eateries that offer good food.
Shopping at Munnar should include tea and spices. Tourists can buy tea sold by the KDHP
(Kannan Deven Hill Plantations)
Travelling to Munnar
The nearest airport to reach Munnar is at Kochi, about 125 km away. The Kochi International
Airport is not only well connected to the rest of the country but also to different parts of the
world. From the airport taxi services are available which might cost around INR3000.
The nearest railway station is at Angamaly, which is at a distance of 120 km. Angamaly lies on
the Ernakulam – Thrissur route and is well connected to other major cities in India. Taxis can be
availed from the rail station to Munnar.
Munnar is also well connected by road. Bus services are available from different parts within the
state as well as neighbouring states. These are operated by the state governments but private
operators abound. Most of these buses stop at the Town bus stand in the main bazaar area
near the confluence of the river and the Tata headquarters.
The best time to visit Munnar is from the months of August to March. The summer months of
April and May are also pleasant with temperatures ranging from 15⁰ - 25⁰ Celsius. During the
winter season the temperatures are lower with crisp mornings and bright blue skies and the
nights being chilly. Heavy woollens and adequate protection should be taken against the cold.
For those who love the rains, Munnar would be an ideal place in the monsoons with lush
greenery and rolling mists everywhere.
Accommodation Options in Munnar
Hotels in Munnar range from 5 star to Budget hotels with all the facilities. Situated on the
highest peak in South India, Munnar is ideal for trekkers, honeymooners and even family
travelers.

Featured review about Munnar
Munnar, an unforgettable destination
"Munnar, this destination I heard a lot from my friends. As I belongs form Mountain region from
North India (Nainital) so the place seems to be similar to other Hill stations. But the difference is
that Munnar provided and excellent view of tea Valley all around the way of Munnar. The places
is full with greenery waterfall & Dams which attracts the tourist from all over the world. As its
been my first experience to travel to South India portion and I was excited to visit all the places
starting from Munnar and this places make our journey more interesting. We spend 02 days in
Munnar and I suggest to take rest while long drive from Cochin to Munnar and start your
sightseeing on day 02.
The weather was very pleasant as it was month of Mid December and local people were excited
to welcome the Christmas festival as all the market & Hotel were decorated with lights. The
sightseeing in Munnar take at least full day as starting from tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam, Tea
Plantations, Eravikulam National Park, Boating and Dreamland are just for the fun and it
includes fun activities and the tourist can enjoy some fun time there.
Also you can find good local restaurants (South Indian, Rajasthani, Punjabi, Gujarati etc ) and
some local home made chocolates shops. So overall the visit of Munnar is interesting and
Nature lover will definitely enjoy the visit over there." - Saurabh Bhandari, Gurgaon, 4 weeks

Lonely plant-Munnar
"The rolling hills around Munnar, South India's largest tea-growing region, are carpeted in
emerald-green tea plantations, contoured, clipped and sculpted like ornamental hedges. The
low mountain scenery is magnificent you're often up above the clouds watching veils of mist
clinging to the mountaintops. Munnar town itself is a scruffy administration centre, not unlike a
North Indian hill station, but wander just a few kilometres out of town and you'll be engulfed in a
sea of a thousand shades of green.
Once known as the High Range of Travancore, today Munnar is the commercial centre of some
of the world's highest tea-growing estates. The majority of the plantations are operated by
corporate giant Tata, with some in the hands of local co-operative Kannan Devan Hills
Plantation Company (KDHP)." - Vinay Surendra, , 2 months ago
Great scenery & excellent climate
"I have taken a couple of one day trips to Munnar. So can't tell about the hotel facilities. I found
the climate excellent, not too cold but really pleasant. But it depends on the time of year, it
heard it gets freezing cold during winter. I travelled in my own vehicle but I know the rates. Cabs
usually charge you around Rs1200 for a whole day trip. Auto rickshaws are much cheaper, Rs
500 for a half day tour ( bargain price)Mattupatty Dam, Kundala Lake, Echo point are all great
places. The lake at mattupetty dam is a really nice place. Boating services are also offered.
Echo point is a point on the same lake where one can hear his own voice being echoed around
Page 4/16
the hills. Overall I would have to say that it's a quite nice place to spend for a day or two." Firoz Mohammed, Kochi, 2 months ago
Nice tourist destination- Munnar
"I have visited Munnar last week along with my family and we enjoyed the hospitality of Kerala
tourism department. It is just 120 Kilometres away from Cochin International airport and the
road conditions are smooth and safe. Journey through forest was my first time experience and
was a thrilling experience for my children's. Munnar is famous for its natural beauty of tea
plantations and mountains. It have a very good climate that everyone can enjoy." - Brijesh

Amazing as well as a best of destination, Munnar
"We were gone Munnar in November, 2014. It was a fantabulous trip for me. We stayed there 2
nights & 3 days which is sufficient to roam around Munnar.
On day 1; we visited Photo point of gorgeous tea estates by open Jeep which was a highlight
mode of transport for us. We had captured so many nice snaps of fantastic tea estates. Then
visited echo point, flower garden, tea garden, mattupaty lake and dam, mattupaty indo Swiss
dairy farm, top station of tea estates from there what was d view of Munnar tea estates. Which
can't be describe in a word.
On day 2, visited Eravikulam National park this flourishing national park is home to the Nilgiri
thar means mountain goat and also the "Anamudi peak "highest peak. Of southern region of
India. We saw nilgiri thar which was d nice thing to see! After that visited kundala lake and dam
surrounded by wooden hills and tea plantations, we have done speed boat ride over there
which was a another highlight thing of my planned trip. Then tea museum of Munnar which was
a knowledgeable visit. In every evening we strolled around local markets and area of Munnar.
Really fantastic trip. On the way to my Thekkady trip we saw chinakal waterfall or power house
waterfall which was another soothing for my eyes. Overall it was a great deal of my Munnar
planned trip. Must see for all. Strongly recommended for all to visit this hidden jewel of India." Imran Khan , , 3 months ago
