Elk Grove Village will host the fifth annual Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove Friday,
July 30 through Sunday, August 1, 2010. This year’s event will feature world-class cyclists,
a three-stage professional men’s competition – including a Pro Men’s Road Race, the
popular Mayor’s Challenge, a children’s Big Wheel race, a Bike Rodeo and the Village
Trustees’ Fun Ride.
The Tour will kick off with a Charity Time Trial Friday evening at 4:00 p.m. Saturday will
open with a full day of racing, ending with the Pro Men’s Road Race.
Both Friday and Saturday evening, the Village will be celebrating the weekend’s festivities by
throwing Block Parties that include live music and fireworks sponsored by the Woodfield
Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau. The Block Parties will allow residents the chance to
mingle with the athletes. Food, soda, and beer will be available for purchase throughout the
entire weekend.
The 2010 Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove
will be held in stages. A Stage Race is a series of
individual races (time trials, road races, circuit
races or criteriums) that are part of a multi-day
event. The rider with the lowest cumulative
time for all stages will be deemed the winner.
MTI Construction - Individual Time Trial
For this event, the cyclists will ride over
a fixed distance alone, contre la montre, or
against the watch. For our Time Trial, the distance is 7.3 km. Starting times are at equal
intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. Based on previous races, the highest ranked
cyclist competes last, giving him the advantage of knowing what time is needed to
win. In time trials, drafting is not permitted if more than one person is on the course.
Drafting occurs by riding closely behind another rider, which creates a slipstream or air
pocket. At a time trial race, spectators will see cyclists wearing lightweight clothing and
helmets, and using aerodynamic bicycles and other specialized equipment.
AXA Equitable - Stage II Road Race - For this portion of the race, all riders
will begin the race simultaneously. The length of road races can vary from a couple
kilometers to upwards of 200 kilometers. For our Road Race, the distance is 160 km/
99 miles and 10 laps. This race will begin at the start/finish line near Ridge Avenue and
Elk Grove Boulevard. The race course will take them on a 9.7 mile loop around the east
side residential neighborhoods. The rider to cross the finish line first will win this stage.
Gullo International - Stage III Criterium - For this part of the race, all riders start
simultaneously and follow the same route. Riders are permitted to draft and even touch
other cyclists’ bikes. Teams form single-file groups called the peloton, and take turns being
the pack leader. The peloton works as a team to take over and pass their competitors.
For the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove, a criterium race is used for the regular
stage. A criterium is a race held on a short course that riders continually lap. Courses
vary from less than one mile to more than two miles in length and the total distance is
25 or more miles. Depending on the race, the length is either determined by number of
laps or total time. Criteriums are much shorter in duration than a typical road race, but
time is countered with higher rates of speed and intensity during these races. This year’s
criterium will be 115 km / 72 miles and 60 laps.
Don’t Miss the Friday and Saturday
Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau
Block Parties
Even if you miss Friday or Saturday’s racing events, please take some time to join us at the Block Parties,
sponsored by the Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau. This family fun event will kick off at
approximately 7:45 p.m., following the last race on Friday and Saturday at the corner of Ridge Avenue and Elk
Grove Boulevard. Following both concerts, there will be a spectacular fireworks display to culminate the day’s
festivities for all race participants and residents to enjoy. The fireworks will be launched from Audubon Park.
Friday night following the Pro Men’s Time Trial, Rock Candy (a cover
band) will take to the stage. Rock Candy plays a mix of Dance, Hip
Hop, Pop Rock and 80’s. There is definitely something for everyone in
this Chicago-based party band. Sweet tooths beware! Candy necklaces
and lollipops are often thrown into the audience. It may be the sugar
rush that gets you on your feet, but it’s the music that will keep you dancing all night!
Saturday Night, Sixteen Candles will kick off the Saturday night Block Party following the Pro Men’s Road
Race. Sixteen Candles is a Chicago-based 80’s cover band. Over the course of the evening,
you will hear a variety of music from Prince and Billy Joel, to Journey and INXS. Adults
and children alike will be familiar with their timeless and popular line-up.
In addition to great music and entertainment from Rock Candy and Sixteen Candles, there
will be food and beverages available for a reasonable price. A beer tent will also be available,
but proper identification must be provided. The food and beverage vendors will be located
on the north side of Elk Grove Boulevard at Ridge Avenue.

During the three days of racing, residents will notice many changes regarding how parking is enforced in the area
near the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove race course. We ask that all residents located on and near the course
be patient and courteous during this time.
Beginning the day of the race, all vehicles must be removed from Elk Grove Boulevard and Tonne Road. If your
vehicles are not moved off the roadway, they will be towed. In addition, we ask that all residents who share
driveway access with the race course, move their vehicles to either Bianco Drive, or Middlebury Lane (Saturday
only). Parking on these streets will be by permit only and the Village will distribute parking passes. Those with
driveway access, who do not move their vehicles prior to 3:00 p.m. on Friday or 7:00 a.m. Saturday and
Sunday, will not have access to their vehicles until after the races finish. Once the course is closed off,
there will be absolutely no vehicular traffic along the designated race course. Should you need special
assistance, please contact the Police Department at (847) 357-4180.
For those watching the race, if you can walk or ride a bike please do so! If you must drive to the race, limited
parking is available at Elk Grove High School and Rainbow Falls waterpark. All other parking will be on the street.
Road Closures - Beginning Friday, July 30
In order to accommodate the various courses for the Tour of Elk Grove, several roads will be closed from Friday,
July 30 until Sunday, August 1.
On Friday, July 30 – Beginning at 12:00 p.m., we will close Elk Grove Blvd. (from Tower Lane to Tonne Road)
and Tonne Road (from Fargo Avenue to Walnut Lane). If you use either of these roads in order to get home from
work on Friday, please use Devon Avenue, Higgins Road, or Lively Boulevard as alternate routes.
On Saturday, July 31 – Beginning at 7:00 a.m., we will close Elk Grove Blvd. (from Rev. Morrison Blvd. to Tonne
Road) and Maple Lane (from Victoria Lane to Love Street).
Afternoon of Saturday, July 31 – From approximately Noon until 7:30 p.m., we will be closing portions of Elk
Grove Blvd. (from Arlington Hts. Road to Rev. Morrison Blvd., westbound lanes only closed to traffic), Arlington
Hts. Road (from Landmeier Road to Elk Grove Blvd., restricted to one lane in each direction), Landmeier Road
(from Tonne Road to Arlington Hts. Road, eastbound lanes only closed to traffic) and Tonne Road (from Walnut
Lane to Landmeier Road, both northbound and southbound closed to traffic). Please use Oakton Street as an
eastbound detour route, and Lively Blvd. as a northbound and southbound detour route. In addition, portions of
Walnut Lane, Cypress Lane, Victoria Lane, Carswell Avenue, Clearmont Drive, Maple Lane, Love Street, Laurel
Street, Ridge Avenue, Charing Cross, Delphia Avenue, Bianco Drive, Crest Avenue and Verde Lane will be closed
for 30 minutes per hour, 10 minutes at a time, to allow the racers to complete the Stage II Road Race. (see page 3)
Sunday, August 1 – Beginning at 7:00 a.m., we will close Elk Grove Boulevard (from Rev. Morrison Blvd. to
Tonne Road) and Maple Lane (from Victoria Lane to Love Street).

NOTABLE RIDERS TO WATCH
A native of San Diego, Chris Horner has been a leading figure on the American
road racing scene since he began as a club racer riding for the San Diego Bicycle
Club in the early 1990’s. At the 2007 Tour de France, he finished at an honorable
15th place overall as a member of the Belgium team Predictor-Lotto. Since turning
Pro in 1995, he has made a name for himself in cycling circles, having won almost
every important race in the U.S. racing calendar. Many of you may remember Horner
from two years ago when he broke his collarbone and returned the next day to help
announce the race.
Chris Horner
Chris is coming back for the 5th year of the Tour of Elk Grove, and he is riding as well as he ever has.
In 2010, Chris joined Lance Armstrong and Team RadioShack. Since joining Team RadioShack, Chris
finished 4th overall at the Tour of California and was the overall winner of the 50th edition of the Tour
of the Basque Country.
In addition to the return of Chris Horner, we will be hosting the past four (4) overall winners of the
Tour of Elk Grove. This includes 2009 winner Karl Menzies, 2008 winner David Veilleux, 2007 winner
Mike Friedman, and 2006 winner Hilton Clarke.
Do You Want to be a Volunteer?
If you would like to be a volunteer for the Tour of Elk Grove events, please contact the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk
Grove Staffing Coordinator, Dianne Patterson, at (773) 868-3010 x221 or via email at [email protected].

Distance Conversions
Distances for bike races are measured in meters. Below is a conversion chart that converts the distance from
kilometers to miles.
1 km = 0.62 miles
10 km = 6.21 miles
30 km = 18.64 miles
60 km = 37.28 miles
80 km = 49.71 miles
100 km = 62.14 miles
110 km = 68.35 miles
150 km = 93.21 miles
200 km = 108.74 miles
BE A SMART SPECTATOR
Professional cyclists can reach speeds upwards of 40 miles per hour. Please keep an eye on young children as this
event moves much quicker than the average parade. The fastest riders will be escorted by a pace car which will alert
spectators that the riders are coming. Support vehicles will follow their team with back up bikes and equipment for
the riders. In cycling, it is common to have a breakaway group of riders pass by up to five minutes before the next
large group of riders. Remember to look both ways before the crossing the street!
When watching the bike race from the parkways, please avoid having frisbees or
balls as they easily find their way onto the race course. Spectators should not sit on
the curb to view a cycling race. Cyclists ride very close to the curb when in packs
and make very sharp turns. Stand back on corners to allow the cyclists adequate
room to make safe turns. Spectators at cycling events are much louder than the
cyclists themselves. The Village encourages families to cheer on the riders and have
a good time. However, safety for both the cyclists and the spectators is paramount.
Racing Terms To Know…
Blocking: When a rider tries to get in the way of other riders. This is usually done as part of a team strategy to slow down
the main field when other team members are ahead in a breakaway.
Breakaway: A rider or group of riders who have separated themselves ahead of the main pack.
Cat, Category (1, 2, 3, 4, 5): A ranking system for cyclists in amateur racing, from elite (Cat 1) to beginner (Cat 5).
Carve: To ride with great speed around the corner of a twisting road.
Clipless Pedal System: A shoe/pedal system in which the shoe is held in place on the pedal with a releasable cleat. This
allows for riders to both push and pull with their legs.
Derailleur: The mechanism that moves the chain from one gear to another.
Domestique: A rider who sacrifices any individual honors to the team leader who is in contention to win.
Drafting: Riding closely behind another rider, which creates a slipstream or air pocket. The lead rider expends up to 30
percent more energy than the following rider.
Fork: Component that extends down from the head tube, then splits into two blades that connect to both sides of the front wheel.
Hammerhead: Someone in great shape who goes “all out” most of the time.
High Gear: Gear with the largest development and is more difficult pedaling, used for level ground and downhill.
Hook: When one rider, either on purpose or by accident, uses his/her rear wheel to hit the front wheel of the rider behind him/her.
Neo-Pro: Cycling term for a rookie at the professional level.
Peloton: The main group of riders, also known as the “pack” or “field.”
Potato Chip: A wheel that has been bent badly. (Also known as a taco.)
Prime: The mid-race sprint for prize, points, or time bonuses. (Also known
as Preem.)
Slingshot: Using another cyclist’s slipstream to gain speed and sprint past.
Slipstream: Wind shelter provided by the leading cyclist or group.
Sitting In: When one rider refuses to take a pull and break the wind for the
group in which he/she is riding. A derogatory term is “Wheel Sucker.”
Time Bonus: Time subtracted from a rider’s cumulative time. These can be awarded by winning or placing in a stage, an
intermediate sprint, or being among the first riders over a rated climb.
