DISCOVER THE RICH VARIETY OF
AN ALPINE SUMMER IN SALZBURG
Dear Readers,
I invite you, your family and friends to
set out in search of the essence of
Salzburg. The things which today’s
guests treasure so much are deeply
rooted in the history of this land: the
generosity of its people, their hospitality, humor, their very way of life. The
men and women of Salzburg are firmly grounded and yet open to much that
is new. This can be experienced out on
a hike to a mountain hut or a fantastic
bike tour, just as it can by attending
one of the many innovative cultural
events. Everything is genuine, evolved,
authentic.
Whether you prefer to spend your holidays out amid breathtaking nature, relaxing or indulging in culinary pleasures,
a visit to SalzburgerLand will always be a memorable experience. Enjoy every moment!
We look forward to seeing you here.
Sincerely,
Leo Bauernberger

--IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY
CULTURE, THE
COUNTRYSIDE IS
DEFINITELY WHERE TO BE:
THE SPECTACULAR

TO A NEW DIMENSION.
CULTURE LOVERS CAN
WATCH THE VIENNA

BIENNALE ART AT THE
KRAFTWERK. CULTURE IN
SALZBURGERLAND IS NO
CAPRICIOUS DIVA, BUT
RATHER A FRIEND THAT
WELCOMES YOU WITH
OPEN ARMS.
Those musicians performing in the Kapitelsaal of the palace
have a fresh look, with their rosy cheeks, bright eyes and
slightly damp hair. Even the elegant lady in the audience
whisks a last remaining water droplet from her shoulder
with a barely noticeable flick of the hand.
Summer escapes in SalzburgerLand are just that: for everyone involved. Musicians and attendees of Diabelli Summer
simply can’t resist Lake Mattsee and combine the concert
with a joyful leap into the water. For artistic director Gott
fried Franz Kasparek, this is a clear sign that everyone here
feels totally at home. For 16 years now, Diabelli Summer
has been an integral part of the province’s full calendar of
events. Its some 3,000 annual visitors include many loyal
fans of such stalwarts as Benjamin Schmid and the Hagen
Family. “Diabelli Summer sees itself as a chamber festival
uniting music of every kind. What differentiates us from the
major concert halls is the casual atmosphere. Artists and
audiences are within arm’s reach of one another“, says
Kasparek with a hint of sly humor. “You have to be careful
you don’t injure someone in the first row with the bow of
your cello.”
Hermann Döllerer, who gave birth to this cultural festival in
Golling 16 years ago, had similar thoughts: “After his last
performance, Otto Schenk shared with me how marvelous
it was to be able to look guests straight in the eye.” Clearly,
you can safely leave your opera glasses at home, and might
even meet the musicians and actors later over dinner. “The
setting will always remain intimate, since the rooms at the
castle allow for nothing else”, says Döllerer, who manages
to bring major artists – including the lead actor from
“Everyman” in the Salzburg Festival – to Golling every year.
“Our festival is a success story. Next year’s theme will be
‘Encounters’ and we will delete the word ‘Little’ from our
name.” With that in mind, in 2016 we can look forward to the
re-christened “Burg Golling Festival. Art and Cuisine.”

Salzburg, the Festival City, is a magnet for culture lovers from around the
world: Many have also discovered that
the summer’s cultural activities are
just as diverse and high quality in the
outlying regions. For example, curator
Andrea von Goetz brings the international art scene to Bad Gastein every
year for an exhibition that forms part
of the “sommer.frische.kunst” festival: “We are quite unique in featuring
art on the ‘periphery’. Many of our visitors and gallery owners first come to
Bad Gastein, and only then continue to
the Biennale. Young artists from many
countries love this place, head up into
the mountains, and enjoy a schnapps
with the locals.” Franz Schubert, to
whom the annual “Schubert in Gas
tein” music festival is dedicated, probably had a similar experience when he
spent summer in Bad Gastein back in
1825.
If you wish to listen to “Tonspuren am
Asitz”, you will also have to head into
the mountains: Something more and
more visitors do ever y year, since
word of Anna Haitzmann’s exquisite
taste has got around. The ar tistic

director says with a twinkle in her eye:
“I am really fortunate that Tonspuren
gives me the chance to organize my
own private concerts. The five concerts are a platform for all kinds of
music that is not commercial.” Haitz-
mountains. Many of them are speechless the first time they catch sight of
our mountain scenery.“
The speechlessness which briefly
overcomes artists and visitors alike is
a beautiful moment. Once it subsides,

mann brings musicians to Leogang,
many previously unheard of, who manage to captivate audiences. All-female
band Ganes was here, as were Herbert Pixner, the Carling Family from
Sweden, Sormeh and Roland Neuwirth. “Luckily, our guests trust we
will make good choices”, says Haitzmann with a chuckle. “The musicians
also agree to appear quite spontaneously, as soon as they hear that the
stage is located at 1,870 meters above
sea level, in the heart of the Salzburg
it is transformed into enthusiasm.
True to the motto “The mouth speaks
out of the abundance of the heart”, feel
free to pass on the word. After all, you
can never have too many friends!
At home, freelance journalist and author
FRANZISKA LIPP loves to sit down at
the piano; the Salzburg native only lets
out the occasional yodel when she is up
in the mountains.

THE CITY OF MOZART

"THE SOUND OF MUSIC”,
NESTLED BETWEEN
GREEN MOUNTAINS AND
BREATHTAKING GARDENS,
IS CHARACTERIZED BY
THE HISTORIC UNESCO
WORLD HERITAGE CITY
CENTER.
The baroque masterpiece in the heart
of Europe - Salzburg - owes its reputation to its unique combination of unparalleled architecture of the old town
and unrivaled scenic beauty. The city
lets visitors listen to famous classical
tunes and breathe history while it im-
parts surprisingly modern insights. A
broad variety of events with more than
4,000 performances per year makes
Salzburg a cultural metropolis. The
city also provided the perfect setting
for the world-famous Hollywood movie "The Sound of Music" whose film
locations can still be visited.
Salzburg is upholding its traditions:
Nowadays, still manufacturers, master bakers and furriers, liqueur producers and weavers, confectioners
and tailors liven up the narrow streets
around the famous Getreidegasse
street. Beer has been brewed in the
city of Salzburg for over 500 years.
Foodies enjoy the sophisticated beer
tradition and will find a wide variety of
breweries, such as the Mülln Monastery, where the beer is brewed with
vintage equipment and tapped directly
from the wooden keg into steins.

HELLBRUNN
HELLBRUNN
400 YEARS ...
… REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT HISTORY.
WITH AROUND 300,000 PAYING VISITORS,
HELLBRUNN PALACE IS ONE OF THE TOP
ATTRACTIONS IN THE SALZBURG REGION.
THE EXPANSIVE GROUNDS ON THE SOUTHERN
EDGE OF SALZBURG WERE BUILT UNDER
ARCHBISHOP MARKUS SITTIKUS FROM 1612
TO 1615.
The wonders of Hellbrunn are virtually
untouched by time, appearing to visitors now as they did many years ago.
Visitors to Hellbrunn are particularly
drawn to the Trick Fountains. They can
enjoy the water automats, grottoes,
fountains and other water-operated
tricks – nothing else in the world can
match their forms and variety. One
thing is certain: all guests, whether
young or old, can look forward to a
refreshing, fun experience. The water
8 | salzburgerland.com
sprays from all spouts and tubes, it
trickles and ripples – and sometimes
it even gets someone wet. Surprises
are guaranteed!
When Hellbrunn opens its doors again
on 24 March 2016 after the winter
break, visitors will all be welcomed in
the Palace courtyard. Newly designed
audio guides will accompany visitors
through the property, offering surprising new insights on these Renaissance
buildings and their secrets. Now, more
than ever, at the start of this year's
400th anniversary exhibition, Hellbrunn
is a great work of art, with the Palace
as its new centerpiece. The new interactive exhibition “GrandDelight – The
unexpected world of Markus Sitikus”
provides an all-encompassing experience, with highlights such as the multi
media presentation on the Carnival
of 1618, the music room with the score
of Monteverdi’s opera L'Orfeo, the enchanting life-sized Unicorn, the interactive rotating sofa, and much more.

hillsides they discover a small piece of
paradise: over 1,800 separate grazing
areas and 550 huts, more than anywhere else in all of Austria. And 170 of those

achieve. This coveted certificate is only
awarded to authentic huts that employ
traditional farming methods. There,

are able to munch on fresh alpine herbs
and enjoy a bit of a summer holiday of
their own.
Home-produced foods such as cheese,
bacon and bread are served along with
a hearty helping of sincere hospitality.
Sitting on a sunny bench outside of the
hut as you take in the breathtaking sight
of the surrounding peaks, it’s no wonder
that the food seems to taste twice as
good. And fresh drinking water is never
in short supply at these Alpine Summer
Huts either. In this way, visitors can enjoy an authentic hut experience without
having to forego any of the essentials,
while their hosts do their bit to preserve

AND HIS BELOVED SISSI.
Austria’s highest mountain – the 3,798
meters-high Grossglockner – radiates
a magnetism and fascination that is
quite unique: Photographed by millions, it is one of the most visited
sightseeing attractions in the country.
Your journey up to the Kaiser-FranzJosefs-Höhe (elev. 2,369 m) leads
along the Grossglockner High Alpine
Road, which last year became a listed
historic monument. It runs through
the magnificent landscapes of Hohe
Tauern National Park.
During your drive, ibex and marmots,
water falls and glacial crevasses,
summer snow fields and high-alpine
meadows flecked with flowers are
your constant companions, here in a
region which would otherwise be the
exclusive domain of experienced
mountaineers. The Grossglockner
High Alpine Road provides you with a
comfortable and astonishingly beautiful way to discover this awe-inspiring
world for yourself.
The Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe was
named after Emperor Franz Joseph,
who, together with his wife Sissi, undertook a personal tour at the base of
the Grossglockner back in 1856. 2016
marks the one hundredth anniversary
of this Habsburg emperor’s death. A
befitting occasion, then, to visit the
same lookout points once experienced
by the royal couple themselves 160
years ago.
TIP
IDEAL FOR FAMILIES:
Located alongside the road are numerous free exhibitions, a Marmot Cinema, rustic huts as well as playgrounds. You can also take short hikes.

GASTEIN VALLEY –
A PARADISE OF GOOD HEALTH
The Gastein Healing Galler y helps
combat rheumatic and inflammatory
diseases of the musculoskeletal system, respiratory tract and the skin.
The noble gas radon, which is emitted
deep within the surrounding mountains, also helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. The hot water
vapor produced inside the Gastein
Healing Gallery is famous far beyond
Austria’s borders for its health benefits.

centers and exception al hotels ensures that you enjoy good health both
during your holiday and long after your
return home. The effects of this unique
constellation of health benefits have
even been scientifically proven.
And all of which you will find in abundance right here in the beautiful pro
vince of SalzburgerLand.
What originally began as a project, has
continued to grow ever since, with 13
different partners now united under
the umbrella “Alpine Health Region
SalzburgerLand”. From wellness
hotel to rehab center and a Healing
Gallery, the close collaboration between experts has opened up a whole
new range of treatment opportunities.
Due to our optimal altitude, even
taking a gentle stroll contributes to
improved health, and asthmatics are
able to breathe freely again in the
clear alpine air. When the water from
the tallest falls in Europe, Krimml
Water falls, plunges to the depths
below, the spray it kicks up creates a
healthful aerosol effect. The finely
nebulized particles contained in the
mist have long-lasting positive benefits for problems such as asthma and
other lung complaints.
Nutritious food and drink, good medical care, along with a healthful climate
and ready access to sports and exercise: the cocktail all of us need for
continued and improved wellbeing.
