SUMMER 2008
Celebrating theFirst 50 Years!
“Move half a world away”? This was a question/a decision that Mother
Mary Kevin Sullivan, OP prayed about in 1956. The Very Reverend William D.
Marrin, OP, at the time (Dominican) Provincial of St. Joseph Province asked
if Dominican Sisters from Sparkill could establish missions in the distant
Islamic Republic of Pakistan, where the Fathers were already ministering. For
months ‘The Pakistan Question” was the subject of much serious consideration, debate, and earnest prayers. Upon receiving approval from Cardinal
Spellman eight Sisters were chosen to be the ‘pioneer’ group and after
some initial training and learning the fundamentals of the Urdu language,
they set sail on September 12, 1958 on the USS Constitution from New York
Harbor. A month later, on October 12th they arrived in Karachi, Pakistan.
Their journey continued up-country to Bahawalpur, arriving safe and sound
on October 16th wondering “what does this new mission hold for us”?
Our Sisters’ ministries spanned from Bahawalpur to Loreto Village, Multan,
Fatimapur Village, Khanewal, and Rahimyarkhan. Sisters continued their study
of the languages and in 1960 two additional Sisters arrived and were sent to
classes to become nurses and mid-wives. Today we continue to minister in
Bahawalpur, Multan, and Loreto.
Being educators was/is who we are so opening primary and then secondary
schools was a given. Through the first 50 years ministries have broadened to
include being engaged in all levels of education, pastoral and ecumenical
ministries, offering medical services, teaching at the pastoral institute in
Multan, and inviting women to become a part of the Congregation. Our
Sisters, a community of sixteen women, twelve professed Sisters, three
novices, and one postulant, continue to be a presence in a country half a
world away where they are and will always be a Christian witness in the
midst of the Islamic people.

Golf Tournament 2008
Call it ‘Divine Intervention’ ~ Call it the ‘Power of Prayer’ –
and a lot were offered by our Sisters and the Golfers. The
weather prediction called for rain all day! However the
clouds never shed a drop and the Golf Tournament went
on. 178 golfers joined us at Blue Hill Golf Course in Pearl
River, NY and 200 people attended the dinner at The
Colonial Manor, in Old Tappan, NJ. How was the event Great! was the response.
The proceeds from the day have enabled us to purchase
a new handicap accessible van that will be used to
transport Sisters to and from doctor appointments.
How grateful we are to all who joined us, participated
in the 50/50 raffle and prayed for the success of
the day.

WEAVINGS Summer 2008
Extending Our Gratitude
As we take time to reflect on the beauty that has
unfolded around us with the arrival of the Summer
season we pause to give thanks for the life – giving
events that are a part of our lives as the Dominican
Sisters of Sparkill. As we rejoice over all that has
been accomplished this past year, we do so with
a sense of sincere gratitude to YOU, our friends
and benefactors, who have been a source of
prayer and support for all our ministries. Without
you, we could not accomplish all that we do
throughout the world.
Your financial assistance has enabled us
~ To further the educational programs which our
Sisters offer to their students in our schools
in Pakistan. Through your generosity basic
school supplies have been made available
for the children.
~ Provide health care opportunities for people of
all ages, most especially for women and children
