Commodore
Tom Pochereva
Welcome to 2015 at
Kaneohe Yacht Club. We
Wish you a happy, healthy
and prosperous year with
all the best in fair winds
and following seas.
New Year’s at KYC
started right on time at 12:00:01 with a host of
revelers there to celebrate including all the flag
officers and their spouses. The annual pupu party to
greet the new year was well attended, food was
plentiful and music with Frankie and the Drive-Inns
was enjoyed by all as evidenced by the crowded
dance floor. A short half-day later the club
underwent a remarkable transformation as members
gathered for the annual Staff Commodores’
Reception held in the Long House and on the Front
Lawn. This event has to be the best catered event at
any club!
I would like to thank our outgoing Staff
Commodore Chuck Cotton for his 4 years of direct
service and guidance to the club during some
remarkable times, and thanks, too, to Adam Sutton
who leaves the Board of Directors to step onto the
Planning Committee. Congratulations go to Tom
Wood for stepping into the Rear Commodore position
for his 4-year term, and we welcome Tim Hudson
onto the Board as a Director for a 3 year term.
Thanks go to all parts our club operations: The
outgoing and incoming volunteers with Fleet and
Club Operations for their contributions both on and
off the water in service to our members. Included in
this are the Deckhands who touch two special
groups… new members and the keiki… our present
and future. Then there are our staff from the
Maintenance Crew, Front Office, Back Office,
Sailing, Security, Catering/Restaurant and
Lifeguards, to Management who are there every day
looking after your club.
Over the course of the coming year KYC will
mark time through events like Opening Day,
Newcomers’ Pupu Party, regattas, fishing, tennis,
cribbage and keiki parties. Planning for and following
up events are facilitated through letters, email, Telltales
and our www.kaneoheyachtclub.com website. As a
member you can best participate at your club by joining
in organizing, running, participating or documenting
the things that are important to you. Sending articles or
pictures to Telltales is an excellent way to contribute.
Reach Telltales at [email protected].
Mele and I have enjoyed being members of
Kaneohe Yacht Club since 1999. While you may
have seen us mostly out on the water, during the past
16 years at the club as our responsibilities have
changed we move to different committees and
continue to make new friends. We are beneficiaries
of KYC’s founding fathers’ vision and the club’s
purpose continues to thrive.
During the coming year if you have ideas,
information or thoughts regarding your club please
let me or the appropriate committee chair know. I
look forward to seeing you at our events and
enjoying our club’s many activities and facilities.

……2014 was a very busy
year with a lot happening
on the water. The Pacific
Cup was the biggest event
of the year and I again want
to thank all the volunteers
who made it a huge success. I also want to thank all
the Fleet Captains who made my job easy as Rear
Commodore.
I’m ready to now move on to Vice Commodore
with new responsibilities and look forward to working
with all the committees to have a busy and exciting
year. The only 2014 committee chairs not staying on
for 2015 are Rick Villalobos – Membership Chair and
Becky Dodini – Deckhands President. Mahalo goes
to Rick for his great work as Membership Chair for
the last three years. Frederic Berg will be the new
Membership Chair and I look forward to working with
Frederic and his committee who plays a key role for
the club. I also want to welcome three new members
to the Membership Committee – Linnea Brooks, Luke
Kudray, and Johanna Morgan. Becky has served as
Deckhands President for the past 2 years and served
with the Deckhands for many years. Becky has done
a fantastic job and deserves a big thank you for all her
years of service to the club. She is also staying on as
an advisor to the Deckhands. Sime Gross will be
taking over as the new President of the Deckhands and
welcomes new Deckhands volunteers Sally Bogert,
Cathy Brigham, Rennie Faith, and Roselle Nottage.
Mahalo goes out to all the new volunteers for being
part of the team this year.
We are in early planning stages of event planning
for this year and Roselle with her committee are
planning several new exciting events. Plans for
Valentine’s Day will be announced soon.
We have a great team this year and we look
forward to providing new and exciting events and
projects to enhance the member’s experience.

Commodore

Aloha
all,
and
welcome to 2015! 2014
sailed by – literally, with
major events such as
Pacific Cup as well as our
traditionally full calendar of
racing, cruising and fishing.
Thanks very much to last year’s Fleet Captains for
their time and energy in keeping fleet operations
running smoothly. Many of you are returning for 2015
along with a few new faces and I am looking forward
to working with all of you this year. Thanks for
volunteering, without you the club can’t do what it
does, your time, talent and enthusiasm is essential to
making KYC the great club that it is. A special thank
you also goes out to Eric Aakhus for volunteering as
Regatta Chair for 2015!
We have an action-packed January coming up.
Over Martin Luther King weekend, weather
permitting, the Cruising Fleet will make the crossing to
Molokai for the long weekend to enjoy “boat camping”
at Hale Olono Harbor – sail and power boats are
welcome. Our season officially starts with Opening
Day on the 25th of January. Be on the look-out for
changes to this year’s event as it will be a revised
format with some new fun features for everyone to
enjoy so please come out and enjoy the festivities.
Details are included on the back cover of this edition of
Telltales. The following weekend, Saturday the 31st ,
we will have our annual Boat Blessing hosted by the
Fishing Fleet, but all boats are welcome. Details for
that event are on Page 6 of this edition of Telltales.
February kicks off with Class boat races on the
8th and 22nd, and IRF on Saturday the 14th, as well as
our first Thursday Night Bulkhead race on the 26th.
Sometime in January or February we are also looking
to host a workshop to train race committee volunteers,
so stay tuned for more on that.
This promises to be an exciting year with great
activities all year long, and did I mention that
volunteers keep the club running? Stay safe, watch out
for each other, and I hope to see you all at the Club or
on the water.

Aloha
This month’s article is basically a re-run of
December’s. I have inserted some firm dates for
the project starting this month to resurface and
re-stripe the Dry Mooring area, now including the
maintenance area near the North hoist.
Another phase of the pavement repair and rehabilitation will begin in
January, presently planned to start on the 22nd or so. The plans have gone
out for bid, and we accepted the one of the bids.
We are asking those of you who have extra space to keep your boats
off the Club grounds for duration of the project. We know that some slip
holders simply do not have the space, and must leave their boats at the Club.
On the other hand, if any Club member can volunteer space for a boat for the
duration of the project, please notify the office. They will be keeping a log
on the movements of boats for the project. The more boats off the property,
the fewer the parking disruptions will be.
Those boats that have to remain at the Club will be moved about the
Club to facilitate the project. Club volunteers will move boats as needed by
the contractor. We will appreciate member’s assistance when it comes time
to move your boat.
Those Marina Regulations specify how a dry slip is to be maintained.
They specify that nothing be left on the ground in the space of the slip.
Anything that is found there during the moves will be considered abandoned
and discarded. There are many “treasures” in dry slips that will be tossed if
they are not removed prior to the start date. Moth boxes come to mind, as
well as spinnaker poles, assorted boat parts, and ladders. Slip holders are
responsible to clean up their areas. We will have a dumpster by the North
tennis court soon for debris from your slips. We must provide free access to
the contractor by the 22nd.
The project is expected to include pavement replacement in some areas and
slurry sealing the entire area. Re-striping will begin the next day, weather
permitting. The lay-out will be essentially the same. Your slip should be in
the same place with the same number.
Technical questions can be referred to George Nottingham at 247-8082 or
email at [email protected]. My cell is 291-7001. Email is
[email protected]. Up-dates and reminders will be sent
as needed by email to everyone involved.
We will need volunteers starting Saturday afternoon, January 17, to help
clean up the area and begin moving boats. Anyone interested can just appear,
ready to get dirty, or contact Don Brown at 722-5771, or myself at 291-7001.

Bring a pupu to share after blessing is pau
This long-standing tradition is again being sponsored by the KYC Fishing Fleet! ALL boats at
KYC are welcome and encouraged to participate! It’s best to bring your boat to the bulkhead,
either early that morning or the night before, because the more boats that come to the
bulkhead, the faster the process goes and the quicker we get to the pupu tables! Decorate
your boat with flags, flowers and ti leaves…give her a proper blessing for a fun-filled and safe
fishing, sailing and cruising season! If you have extra flowers or ti leaves you’d like to share,
please bring them.
Come down early for fun and fellowship at the bulkhead and then gather ‘round the flag pole at
10:00 AM with Pastor Darren Galindo. He will then commence the boat blessings at the
bulkhead and will proceed down the piers (for those that cannot get to the bulkhead). Plan on
gathering under the tent on the lawn for pupu and fellowship after the blessings are done
around noon. This event is a great, fun-filled day, with renewed camaraderie to kick off the
boating year for fishermen, sailors and sand-bar cruisers alike. Let’s get together and make it a
great start to a New Year!
For planning purposes, if you cannot be at the bulkhead for the blessing, please contact me
before January 31st with your boat name and slip number.

J/80 Worlds 2014
T
By Pete Stokka
here has been some friendly competition over the past few years in the
KYC IRF fleet between Alohalani and Crusader, the two KYC J/80s. Their captains and crews are always eager to size each other up out on the bay. This
year Alohalani’s future was unknown as her owner/skipper had orders to leave
the island and head back east. Ryan McCrillis had been a KYC Service Member
while on the island for the past few years and upon receiving orders to VA, he
socialized the idea of competing in the 2014 J/80 World Championships
planned to be held in Annapolis MD, a familiar venue from his time spent sailing at the Naval Academy. Though it was just an idea at the time he signed up
Alohalani to compete.
As his relocation date approached, Alohalani was sold. She would be staying
at KYC to continue racing in Hawaii. At that point it looked as if the World
Championship campaign was off. With just over two months to the regatta,
Ryan commissioned another J/80 which would be racing in the regatta representing KYC. The boat is named Haka and the Worlds crew consisted of two
from Alohalani and two from the sister J/80, Crusader. The Haka crew who
represented KYC at the Worlds was:
Skipper/Helmsman: Ryan McCrillis
Trimmer: Pete Stokka
Tactician: Mike Van Woerkom
Pit/Bowman: Morgan Stephenson
Eastport Yacht Club did an outstanding job hosting the event along with a very
professional race committee throughout the regatta. The regatta was held
from 25 September through 4 October and was jam packed with racing and
after race activities. The schedule for the week was for a practice race on
Sunday, followed by the official regatta on Monday through Saturday with one
lay-day scheduled for Thursday. The schedule allowed up to 4 races per day
and up to a total of 20 races for the regatta.
The Sunday practice race gave everyone a chance to size up the competition
and get a feel for sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. One of the first things the
Haka team noticed was how spoiled they are in Kaneohe Bay with consistent
Michael Van Woerkom; Pete Stokka; Ryan McCrillis;
Morgan Stephenson;
wind, minor current and flat water. The first half of the race week was light air
with chop on the water from passing barges.
Monday was race day 1, very light air not getting up above 5 knots. Due to
the lack of wind, only one race was sailed in the late afternoon. Tuesday was
lighter, which in turn did not allow for any races to get started. The Haka team
did a lot of light air practice sets throughout the wait during these days to work
out some kinks and get some solid teamwork in prep for the rest of the week.
On Wednesday the wind picked up slightly, although still very light, the J/80
competitors and race committee was able to start 4 races. It was apparent at
this time in the regatta that the key was breaking away from the other 31 boats
and sailing in clean air. Boat speed was critical and became very apparent in
a one design regatta.
Due to the light winds at the beginning of the week the boats put together a
petition to race on the previously scheduled lay-day. The race committee
agreed and another four races were held on Thursday in 8-10 knots of wind.
Friday was when the wind started building and hit 10-15 knots. Four races
were finished. It was in this wind where the Haka team started to feel at home,
but noticed how the colder breeze felt more dense than 10-15 knots in Hawaii.
Haka had one of their better races this day getting 12th place on race 10.
Saturday was the last day of racing with some solid wind at 15-20 knots and
a great day to finish the week. There were 3 races completed followed by a line
at the crane to prep the boats to trailer home and then conduct the awards ceremony. The Haka team ended 26 of 32 boats at the 2014 Worlds. This was not
as good as they had hoped, but it was an excellent experience.
Thanks to many of the other boats and crew members (many professional
and/or Olympians), Haka felt welcome and honored to race against the best in
the world. Each member of the team came back with much more knowledge
then they had taken with them. Large international regattas are great opportunities to meet great sailors and learn, and that is exactly what KYC’s Team
Haka did. All members of the team are eager to compete again in hopes to
bring the world title back to KYC.

December was a busy month--not all of it on the courts though!
The awards dinner was attended by many of our members. The season's
points winners were announced. There was a tie for 1st place for men
between Kit Beuret and Keegan Giles. First place for the women was
Sherri Phillips. Congratulations to all!
The decision to have our holiday party on December 27th must have
been a good one. It was well attended. About 54 people were there to
share a delicious meal put on by our excellent catering staff. Each table
of 8 (or a little less) decorated their own tables and many of our creative
people went all out! They were all very festive.
Our newly refurbished tennis court is up and in use. It looks great
and plays even better! Thanks to Rob Rietow for honchoing that project.
The first tournament of the year will be on Jan. 10th and will start at
8:30. The potluck that evening will be Asian themed. It is a great mix
of all the fabulous food we have here in Hawaii and was a big hit last
year. Don't miss it.
Upcoming events include the the Blood Drive on March 28th. This
is being organized by our tennis fleet and we hope to have a good
turnout. It only takes an hour and with that 1 pint you can save 3 lives!
So mark your calendars.

SPRING 2015 KYC
JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
KYC's 2015 Spring Junior Sailing Classes are held every
Saturday from February 14th through May 9th. This Spring
we have expanded our classes from 11 to 13 weeks. We will
be starting one week earlier and are keeping the prices very
affordable at $5 to $7 an hour per student. Whether or not
a student was enrolled in the Summer Program or some
other session, take this opportunity to participate in our
Spring Junior Sailing Program!
As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a
smaller class size so students can take advantage of a
better instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class
will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves and
accelerate up into other classes at a faster pace. These
classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building. In
addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers
participation in local regattas, Friday night El Toro races, and
Sunday Laser and 420 Races.
Spring Sailing Program Schedule
Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no sailing experience or has taken a
few years ashore and wants to rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are primarily taught in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are
provided for all students enrolled in this class. Curriculum will include the basics of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat
handling. The goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and educational atmosphere.
Classes will be held on Saturday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Introduction to Racing- This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing including, rigging, points of sail, docking and
terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Curriculum will focus on performance
dinghy handling in El Toros and 420s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic
understanding of sailboat racing and tactics.
Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Advanced Racing- No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing including racing, tactics, boat handling,
and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve
sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require
attendance at local regattas.
El Toro classes will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: There are additional fees for regattas usually around $10.00. Parent participation
is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites.
Costs
Junior Spring Sailing Class tuition will be $255 for Members and $295 for Non-members for all classes. Tuition for students registering for both
Saturday morning and afternoon classes will be $465 for Members and $545 for Non-members.
A 10% discount is applied to students using their own boat and for sibling signing up at the same time. No refunds will be available for missed
classes.
Partial scholarships may be available. Please contact the KYC front office at 247-4121 if you have any questions.
Registration
Registration and packets will be handled through the KYC Office. All appropriate registration and release forms along with full payment must
be completed in order to guarantee a place in the class.
For further information contact Jesse Andrews, Director of Sailing, Kaneohe Yacht Club, 247-4121, ext. 22 or by e-mail
[email protected].
Sunday Class Boat Racing- On scheduled Sundays throughout the Spring, 420s and Lasers are welcome to race in the KYC Classboat races.
The start is at Noon and there will be three races a day around the harbor buoys. There is no entry fee for the series but to use one of KYC's
420s, a reservation must be made for the boat through the KYC Office.
