The Update - Saint Dominic Academy
The Update - Summer 2015
2
From the Superintendent
To the St. Dom’s Community,
I hope all of you have been taking in this truly beautiful summer. While I’ve had the chance to visit Maine
before, living here is a whole other reality and my family absolutely loves it. And yes, I realize skeptics
remind me that winter brings a whole other dynamic here. However, being a born and raised northerner, I
love my ski season so those pesky snowflakes are just another reason for me to be thrilled to be here.
Much of my short history here in the Diocese has been actively engaged at St. Dom’s. Great work has been
happening this spring and summer. All of you will receive information this fall regarding the strategic
planning process. I have been very familiar with the work done through the input of the broad school
community. It is exciting to watch clear vision and mission concepts crafted and then distilled into
concrete strategies and goals. The process constructs a clearer understanding of what successful learning
should look like in the classroom, how the Catholic faith should be learned and lived within the community
and is actively securing steps necessary for a long history of excellence at Saint Dominic Academy. All
of this can sound like idealist rhetoric, but as I see a clear plan being constructed, I know from past
experience these strategies build a successful future for education.
The work of building a vibrant future for St. Dom’s has engaged current families, expert members of the
broader community as well as national authorities in Catholic education. I am honored to call the Diocese
of Portland my new home. I am proud that one of the first steps in my new
and extended history here in Maine has been facilitating the efforts of those
working to write the next dynamic chapter of St. Dom’s. I truly believe that if
these same efforts continue, the work done thus far will serve as a model for
the modern future of Catholic education in Maine. It is exciting to watch the
Holy Spirit at work through the hard work of such dedicated individuals.
I want to thank you all for the personal welcome so many have offered. I feel
deeply welcomed by the Lewiston/Auburn community and look forward to
our bright future together.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
The blessings of summer are surely here and I am happy to say that St. Dom’s is receiving its share! I am very
proud of all of our students this year as they have once again risen to show us that integrity, community and
excellence are more than descriptors of our school and programs. The colleges in which our seniors have
been accepted are some of the highest caliber and the number of scholarships our students were awarded
is nothing short of impressive. The school year ended with St. Dom’s winning yet another baseball state
championship despite being ranked as the eighth seed.
The coming school year looks bright indeed as we continue to ramp up our art and music programs, spread
our robotics instruction to the fifth grade level and introduce our high school students to Computer Aided
Design (CAD) courses.
After receiving insightful feedback from many of you, our
board is continuing to develop a comprehensive strategic plan
that will map out the next three years. Finally, this summer one
of our beloved alumnus, Mr. Don Dion ‘72, generously led a
challenge to all of our donors to match up to $75,000. Indeed, we
are blessed and I would like to thank each of you for remaining
loyal and supportive to our school as our next group of students
walk the halls of St. Dom’s this fall.
Take care and God Bless,
Donald Fournier
President

Don Dion Scholarship Match
Wonderful things continue to happen in the St. Dom’s community, and this summer
was no exception. Every year, the school aims to award $150,000 in scholarships
to students and their families. This past July, St. Dom’s was blessed by a generous
offer from Mr. Donald Dion ‘72. Mr. Dion pledged to help the school reach the goal
of $150,000 by matching every dollar donated, up to a maximum $75,000. Mr. Dion
and the rest of the St. Dom’s family want to ensure more students can achieve their
dream of becoming a St. Dom’s Saint.
Many alumni, including Mr. Dion, attribute
their success in life in part to the education
they received within the walls of St. Dom’s.
Alumni found this education opened doors
to further education and experiences that
created the well-rounded and knowledgeable
individual they are today. Staff and faculty of
St. Dom’s want to help others realize this gift
by reducing financial concerns.
Mr. Donald Dion ‘72
Mr. Dion showed his commitment to help retain more students and attract
additional bright minds; He challenged everyone in the St. Dom’s community to
show their commitment. The Dion Scholarship Challenge wrapped up on August
15. St. Dom’s president, Mr. Donald Fournier, was pleased to share that as of August
5, approximately $50,000 was received from families, friends, alumni and local
businesses. Meaning, there is over $100,000 available to deserving families.
This means a great deal to students, parents and the community. While the
opportunity to have your gift doubled has passed, it’s not too late to help a deserving
student receive a first-class education. Donations to the annual scholarship fund are
accepted year-round.
To make a donation, visit www.stdomsmaine.org, call 207.782.6911 or mail a check
to St. Dom’s at 121 Gracelawn Road, Auburn, Maine 04210.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Saint Dominic Academy at the
information above.

The classes of 1950 and 1965 were given the
proud distinction of leading the procession of
graduates. The honorees were given a standing Norm Vallee (‘50), Bishop Robert Deeley and Ray Morin (‘50)
ovation as they entered the gymnasium while the school song played. President Donald
Fournier and Principal Joline Girouard congratulated the alumni present. Everyone enjoyed
this special evening.

St. Dom’s Youngest Donor
On June 15 St. Dom’s received an unexpected donation from a fourth grade student who may be
the youngest person to give to the school. Lauren Hanlon, daughter of Mariette and Kevin Hanlon,
celebrated her ninth birthday on June 13. Prior to her party, she spoke with her parents about party
favors for her friends. Lauren liked the idea of donating money to a specific cause, rather than handing
out gifts and treats. This is similar to
parties where guests bring dog and cat
food, etc. for the local humane society.
However, Lauren and her family wanted
to do something that would impact
the immediate community. After some
brainstorming, Lauren and her mother
thought in lieu of handing out gifts to the
guests, the Hanlon’s would instead donate
$5 for every child that attended toward the
cause Lauren chose. Lauren and her family
cleaned out the floors of their vehicles and
anywhere else loose change may be found.
The Hanlon’s created a fun poster and put
aside $5 per child in attendance, to the
program of Lauren’s choice. Lauren decided
Lauren and her friends at the birthday party
she wanted all donations to go to St. Dom’s.
The total donation for Lauren’s party was $75. “We really felt the birthday party and time spent with
friends and family was the real gift,” Mrs. Mariette Hanlon shared.
“As parents we would have spent the money either way. So this was a good creative way to ensure the
money benefits our kids, our kids’ friends and the school they attend,” said Mr. Kevin Hanlon.
A picture was taken of all the children in attendance around the poster (above).
“My goal is to really encourage other children and
families to do the same and support whatever they
feel is important to them, such as the library, art,
music, gym, aftercare... the list goes on and on,” Mrs.
Hanlon concluded.

Dom’s please call 207.782.6911, send checks to Saint
Dominic Academy, 121 Gracelawn Road, Auburn

tomorrow.

2015 Kindergarten Graduation
Every year, kindergarten parents come together during the last week of school to celebrate the annual
kindergarten commencement. Students were very excited that they completed their first full year of school and
are ready to move on to the first grade.
Each of the 35 kindergarteners wore paper caps and
remembered stories from the past year. “It was moving to
see how they have come to care about each other and their
teachers. Their progress speaks to the dedication and effort
of the teachers here at St. Dom’s who have worked so hard to
help them grow,” said Fr. Seamus Griesbach.
Kindergarteners were all surprised when Mr. Bilodeau told
them of their projected high school graduation year: 2027!
“Just think of all the knowledge and adventures that await them until they find themselves walking down that
aisle again as seniors,” Fr. Seamus said.
Ninth Annual Bob Boucher 5K Walk/Run
The ninth annual Bob Boucher 5K takes place on Sunday, September 20. This annual event honors a beloved
individual within the St. Dom’s community. Boucher was a teacher, coach, athletic director, friend, husband,
father, family member and much more to the people in the community.
Each year, Saint Dominic Academy hosts a 5K walk/run to keep Bob’s memory
alive. All monies raised go directly to St. Dom’s athletics and education. This
includes fulfilling needs at the Lewiston PreK-6 Campus, sports uniforms in dire
need of replacement and a scholarship awarded to a St. Dom’s student annually,
which helps defray tuition costs. Last year, over $5,000 was raised.
Bob possessed a unique talent to teach and coach young athletes to
championship levels. As a coach, he had a spectacular 25 year career as the St.
Dom’s hockey coach, capturing five state titles and was named Coach of the Year
five times. Bob also coached the golf and tennis teams for several years. His first
year as Athletic Director St. Dom’s had 14 sports teams; during his tenure the
athletic department grew to an astounding 33 teams. Bob was appreciated and
respected by many during his years of service to the school. He was inducted
into the Lewiston-Auburn Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
Bob Boucher (1951-2007)
This year the 5K will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Auburn Campus. The preregistration deadline
is Sept. 4 at a cost of $20. This includes a free t-shirt. Registration after the deadline is $25, without a t-shirt. Cash
prizes will be awarded to the first place male and female, and second place winners for both male and female.
Additional awards, including local area gift certifications will be given at random to a male and female in eight
age groups.
To participate in this year’s 5K, please send a check made out to St. Dom’s (121 Gracelawn Road, Auburn) along
with your name, address, phone number, age, gender and t-shirt size. Sponsorship opportunities, along with
donations are also accepted. For more information, please contact Ms. Laurie Servidio at 207.782.6911 or email

New Technology Programs
Earlier this spring several elementary teachers participated in a workshop that built Lego robots. Through the
training provided by Maine Robotics, out of Orono, Maine, teachers were given the opportunity to gain some very
valuable S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
experience that could be applied and used in classrooms.
Teachers were introduced to the program and the myriad of ways
this tool can be used in classrooms. “It was amazing to see just how
diverse the applications of these robots can be; practically limitless,”
said former fifth grade teacher Dustin Haskell. “The murmur of ideas
along with teachers rebuilding and adjusting curricula was audible
throughout the morning.”
The true potential of these robots was realized when teachers built,
programmed and tested their own robot. Teachers spent the entire day
programing Lego robots to complete tasks, including, moving from one point to another, performing concentric
circles and “rescuing” Lego polar bears. It was clear to everyone that this is something that will engage students
in the classroom while covering a wide variety of topics. “It’s obvious Lego’s are no longer just for kids,” Haskell
exclaimed.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kris Cray, Information Systems Technician at the Auburn Campus announced the addition
of two new computer science courses for the 2015-16 school year. Beginning this fall, the computer science
curriculum will include two S.T.E.M related courses. Interested students attended a brief overview this spring
which demonstrated the classes and how Computer Aided Design (CAD) is used in technology. Dan Moreno,
American Institute of Architects (AIA), is the Department Chair of the Architectural and Civil Engineering
Technology (ACET) Program at Central Maine Community College
and Christopher Martel is a purchasing partner for CAD printing and
supplies for Spiller’s Copy and Supplies. Both men discussed CAD’s
place in the science and technology fields, answered questions and
printed a 3D object for students to see.
St. Dom’s will work in cooperation with CMCC’s architecture and
civil engineering program and the computer technology program to
offer the following courses:
Students watch a 3D printer demonstration
•CAD 110 - FALL 2015: This introductory course to Computer Aided
Design will teach students the fundamentals of CAD software, the process of design logic, designing 2D and 3D
objects with software and handmade modeling techniques, all of which are commonly used in the architectural
and engineering industry.
•CAD 298 - Spring 2016: In this course, students will work extensively with the 3D Studio Max software. The
course will expand student use and knowledge of CAD software with a focus on 3D design, design analysis,
coupled with creativity and imagination.
“This is an exciting time for us,” said President Fournier. “Everyone is excited about these programs, and this
is just the beginning of our technology upgrades.” Both courses will be taught by Dan Moreno and may be
transferable for college credit.

Fifth Graders Release Salmon into the Wild
On Wednesday, May 27, Mrs. Theresa Dufour’s and Mr. Dustin Haskell’s fifth grade classes traveled to a nearby
stream outside of Lisbon to release close to 150 federally listed endangered
Atlantic Salmon. The last four years, St. Dom’s Board Member Neil Ward has
provided fifth graders with over 200 salmon eggs during the month of February.
Mr. Ward volunteers with the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s Fishfriends
Program. The Federation takes a proactive approach to the declining number of
salmon.
Over a period of two to three months students care for the eggs until they are
big and strong enough to survive in the wild. The eggs stay in a chilled and dark
aquarium inside the classroom where students nurtured them.
Mr. Ward met students near the stream. He briefly talked about current efforts
to increase the Atlantic Salmon population. He then answered questions from
students about the salmon and how they will survive in the wild. Students made
their way to the banks of the stream in groups of five. Each student released a

swam away. These salmon will reach the
Atlantic Ocean via the Androscoggin
River and eventually end up over 2,000 miles away near Greenland.
The experience was a little bittersweet; students were excited to think
about the salmon growing and making their way downstream, but at
the same time they were sad to say “goodbye.” Two girls shared their
thoughts about releasing the salmon and said “I thought it was fun, but
also kind of sad because some will die before they get big.”

St. Dom’s would like to thank Mr. Neil Ward for his help and experience
with this project!

2015 Mission to Mississippi Trip
April vacation was no vacation for 17 seniors who chose to sacrifice their spring break and take part in the
annual mission to Mound Bayou, Mississippi. This community, founded by two freed slaves, is among the
poorest in the country. Seniors, chaperones and a few staff members boarded a bus and left Auburn for
Mississippi to help those in need. For two weeks St. Dom’s students gave up the many comforts of home; no
cell phones, iPads or other technology. The annual pilgrimage provides seniors the opportunity to perform
hours of community service. This is the 18th year of St. Dom’s Mississippi Trip, which was started by the late
St. Dom’s principal, Michael Welch. “One reason students still go is to honor Mr. Welch,” said Mrs. Rioux, a St.
Dom’s Math and English teacher and moderator for the trip.
It took three days for the group to reach their destination. Upon arrival the seniors, chaperones and faculty
were treated to a true southern meal at a local restaurant and were joined by staff from the St. Gabriel Center,
Sr. Monica Mary, Sr. Mary Beth, Sr. Jude Ann, Mavis
Honorable and Candace Chase.

Sunday, April 19 was the first full day in Mississippi
and the St. Dom’s group assessed job sites, cleaned
the St. Gabriel Center, washed vehicles, bought
groceries and toured the community. The real work
began on Monday; the group offered many services
to the area including raking yards, cutting trees,
sweeping, cleaning up properties, washing windows,
painting and building a ramp. Students visited a local
school to help students with their reading and math.
A few artistic students even painted a long hallway of
the school!
Each night students came together, reflected on the day’s activity and said a few prayers. Everyone talked
about how they helped or saw appreciation in someone’s eyes. “The kids are proud of themselves,” said Mrs.
Rioux. The mission is about service and learning.
“The Mound Bayou folks look forward to our students each
April. It’s a real boost to the community,” said Sr. Donald Mary.
“They are a positive influence here.”
From year to year, lodging for this trip depends on the water
level of the Mississippi River. Typically, students stay in tents
at a campground, but flooding this year didn’t permit this to
happen. The group was able to stay at Our Lady of Victories
Catholic Church in Cleveland, Mississippi. Meals were
prepared at both Our Lady of Victories and the Saint Gabriel
Center.
The people of Mound Bayou always turn out to thank the
students at the end of each trip. “We have certainly made a
difference over the years. One lady was so grateful she made
a catfish dinner for us while others sent goodies,” said Mrs.
Rioux. Over 25 families and institutions received help from St.
Dom’s. The mission is a life-changing event for everyone!

Boys Lacrosse Spring Season
The Boys Lacrosse team had another exciting spring season. Coaches Jamie King and Dominic Parent set a goal
early in the season for the team to make it to playoffs. They started the season off strong. Some of the highlights
of the season were shutting out Mt. Blue 5-0. Beating Erskine
Academy 15-5 and out-shooting them 29-19. The team beat
Oxford Hills 10-6 and an exciting 8-7 overtime win against
Morse High School.
The Saints found themselves in a first round playoff match up
against Morse. They were going into the tournament as a #9
seed. The boys played hard but lost to the Shipbuilders during
the first round. The game didn’t end the way the regular
season game ended but it showed if the boys put in the time
they can compete with most of the Class B teams in the East.
The Boys Lacrosse team finished the regular season with five
wins and eight losses.
“The team gave the season their all and we were happy to make it to playoffs,” Coach King said. “We lost six
seniors this spring but will have nine incoming freshman that we know of for next season, so the future of this
team looks promising.” With the addition of a JV team and a middle school program, this should help build the
Boys Lacrosse team for the long term.
Graduates this year were Isaac Dean, Matt Chasse, Kenton Ernst, Ricky Lacombe, Keenan Lynch and Adam
Vining. The team would like to thank the seniors for all they did over the past four years and wish them the best
of luck as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
Girls Varsity Softball Season
St. Dom’s Girls Varsity Softball 2015 season started off in limbo. There were some concerns as to whether or
not there would be enough girls interested to field a varsity team. With enough determination on the part of
upperclassmen, the girls were able to rally up a total of 14 girls. With the additional girls, the team was excited for
another season of varsity softball.
With a record of 1-15, it was certainly a challenging year for
this very young team. Despite their record, the season was a
fun learning experience for all. The girls did their best and
the parents were extremely supportive. The seniors showed
leadership and character through some tough circumstances.
Coach Scott Lovejoy wanted the girls to walk away knowing that
playing on a team is a great learning experience for life out in
the real world. “When you’re out on the field you play as a group
and when you’re up to bat it’s one-on-one game,” said coach
Lovejoy.
After a tough season, the girls identified areas that need
improvement for next season and are ready to take them
head on. It was a bit of a building year for the Lady Saints; the girls said goodbye to three seniors and are
looking forward to seeing seven freshmen next spring. “I really believe their future looks bright,” coach Lovejoy
concluded.

Varsity Baseball Wins State Championship
St. Dom’s had another successful athletic school year! This spring, the Boys Baseball team brought in another
State Championship. This is a record-setting year, as St. Dom’s is now the sole baseball team in Class C to have
earned five State Championships, all in odd-numbered years, and all under the leadership of head coach Bob
Blackman. Coach Blackman also stands alone in his success at the regional level, being the only coach to bring his
team to the regional final game in 12 of 13 consecutive years.
At the beginning of the season the team won 11 games yet could only rise
to #8 in the final standings. The boys lost five games, due to an injury
sustained by top hitter/ace pitcher Mike Bryant, in the third game of the
season. While Bryant was sidelined, the Saints, who had never lost two
games in a row, went 0-3 in one week. Fortunately, trainer Whitney Porter
guided Bryant’s recovery in time to rescue the season. Upon his return the
boys started with a shocking (to some) 8-0 victory over the then number
one, Monmouth. With a roster of 12 healthy athletes, St. Dom’s embarked
on a 13-14 surge. For the season, the Saints outscored opponents 143-51.
2014-15 Varsity Baseball Team
While Bryant was injured, most of the pitching load fell onto the shoulders
of Mitch Lorenz. Lorenz threw half of all innings pitched by the team (69 of 139). The team was treated to a
pleasant surprise when Gavin Bates emerged as a very strong # 3 pitcher. Bates, a rising sophomore, actually
throws harder than any other pitcher in Class C, topping out at a major-league velocity of 85 miles per hour!
In the playoffs, the Saints steadily grew stronger, starting with a close victory in the only home playoff game,
and the only prelim game since 2003, edging Madison 3-1. Top-seeded Dirigo was the next opponent, who the
boys beat 5-2 on the strength of a 5-run third inning and solid pitching from Bryant. The Saints then traveled to
Readfield for a regional semi-final game against Maranacook. Bryant tossed a great 2-hit shutout, and held Mr.
Maine Baseball finalist Cam Brochu to a lone single. Long-time rival, Winthrop was shutdown by the boys during
the Western Maine Finals held at Saint Joseph’s College. This was a very tight game through the first six innings;
the visiting Saints opened the floodgates with a 4-run seventh inning
keyed by RBI hits from Caleb Labrie and Bryant. In the bottom of the
seventh, Bryant held Winthrop scoreless right down to the final at-bat.
With the bases loaded and tying run at the plate, he induced a harmless
pop-up to Ryan Harvey.
In the first return visit to Bangor’s Mansfield Stadium since the 2011
State Championship, the Saints shocked all of Class C with a season-best
offensive performance: a 16-hit explosion featuring 3-for-4 batting by
Labrie and Bates, overwhelming Eastern Maine’s number one seeded
Bucksport by the mercy rule in six innings, 14-4. Radio announcers
Boys holding State Championship Trophy
covering the game specifically mentioned Justin Keaney’s “gold glove”
performance at third base while commented twice on Bobby Shelley’s “cannon arm” in left field.
The Boys Baseball coaches recognize key role players, Luis Allen for his speed on the bases, and the designated
hitter Matt Keaney. They also wish to congratulate Nate Richard, the team’s lone defensive player with a fielding
percentage of 1000. A special thank you goes out to captains Ray Mosca, Mitch Lorenz and Mike Bryant for
their leadership. St. Dom’s looks forward to the emergence of Sam Blaisdell and Mack Pelletier next year as
key returning varsity players who will lead the Saints to more success. Most of all, St. Dom’s wants to express
deep gratitude to head coach Bob Blackman for his 13 years leading the Saint to this record-setting season,
outstanding sportsmanship and state championships.

Three Lady Saints Attend State Track Meet
St. Dom’s was happy to send three athletes to the 2015 State Track Meet. Rising junior, Sydney Sirois (below),
made quite an impression, winning the 1600 meter event for the second year in a row! Sydney also competed
in the two mile event. Joining Sydney was fellow classmate Ella Brown, who also participated in the one mile.
Upcoming senior, Steven Hammerton, rounded out the team by competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. All
St. Dom’s athletes preformed very well, above their usual times.
At the team’s banquet, Sirois, Brown and Hammerton were
named as next year’s captains. They will join the returning
captain, rising senior Abby L’Abbe, who plans to make a serious
plan of attack for the 100 and 300 meter hurdles at States.
“I am incredibly proud of this team. We have a small team of
only 17 compared to other schools. Everyone worked hard and
improved their skills all season,” said Coach Stephen Amoroso.
Graduates this year included Kadie Veinote, Captain Emily
Carney, Captain Alexis Laliberte and Captain Zach Little.
Laliberte and Little both accepted positions on the University of Maine at Farmington track program.
2015 Varsity Tennis Season
The Boys and Girls Varsity Tennis team had an exciting season both as a team and as individuals.
The high school tennis singles players competed in the Regional Qualifiers for the Maine
State Tournament on May 16, comprised of all single players from classes A, B and C. Chris
Laverdiere (‘15), Noah Toussaint (‘17) and Bethany Hammond (‘17) all advanced on Friday,
May 29. Chris and Noah represented two of the top 48 players in Maine. Hammond won all
four of her matches, advancing to the final four. She won her semi-final match 6-1, 6-2 on
Monday, June 1 and moved toa the final round where she took second place.
Both the boys and girls varsity teams qualified for playoffs, with their first match on June
4. The girls ranked third and finished the regular season 9-3. The boys ranked fifth and
finished the season with a record of 8-4. The boys traveled to Hall-Dale for the Western
Maine Class C semi-final game but came up a bit short losing 1-4. The girls tennis team
hosted Wayneflete for the Western Maine Class C semi-finals. The Lady Saints fought hard
but came up short losing 2-3.
The Mountain Valley Coaches held their end-of-the-season
meeting on June 2 to present awards for those within the
conference. Elliot Hachey (‘17), Will Sheats (‘15) and Zoë Caron
(‘15) earned Honorable Mention, Toussaint and Clare Kramer
(‘17) earned second team, and both Laverdiere and Hammond
earned first team All-Conference. Hammond also won the
Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year for the second
year in a row.
2014-15 Girls Varsity Tennis Team
