From the General Manager
Summer is in full swing and Continental Country Club is full of energy as we prepare for Independence Day! In just a few days, the
golf course will be filled with visitors for “Lights on the Lawn.” The celebration will kick off at 3pm with food, beverage, music, games, and
fun, fun, fun! Fireworks will commence at dusk and it is guaranteed to be a grand show!
Once the Independence Day celebration wraps up, it will be time to get back to normal at Continental. Normal is relaxing on the
patio at the Oakmont with friends, kick back at the pools and enjoy some Flagstaff sun, play a round of golf or play a match of pickleball or
tennis. And don’t forget the fun member only
parties planned for this summer. We want your
Continental Country Club experience to be like a
home away from home. A place you can relax
and take in the great views.
As we cross the midway point of 2016,
I am pleased to report that the financial health of
Continental is stronger than it has been in many
years. The current operating forecast is ahead of
budget with income being right on budget and
expenses well below budget. In this newsletter
you can review the financials through May 31st.
We would like to reach as many
members as possible with our Continental News
via email. If you would like other family members
to receive the newsletter or informational emails,
please call the clubhouse and ask to add another
email address.
The Oakmont is as busy as ever this
summer and now you can enjoy a new
atmosphere in the Marquee. The new quiet,
upscale, rustic space is exactly what Continental has been waiting for. The 60 seat wine bar and kitchen is centered around a pizza oven
where most of the menu dishes are derived
from. The hidden entrance behind the
bookcase welcomes you to this fun new
dining venue.
Finally, the pool at Continental is
getting a lot of use this summer. The
Oakmont is providing food and beverage
poolside to members who are enjoying the
pool so come join the relaxing environment.
See you at the pool!

GOLF
News from the Golf Shop
Happy Summer to all of our HOA Owners,
What a spectacular start we have had for the 2016 golf season. The weather went from cool to hot in June and the golf course
became a very popular place! I have enjoyed all the positive feedback ranging from Golf Shop improvement to golf course
improvements from many owners, Golf members and countless guests. We truly look forward to our busiest month of the season this
July. Continental Golf Club is again the host site for fireworks on the fourth of July and will be closing the front nine only at 11:00am on
the fourth. The Practice Facility will close on the fourth as well at 12:00pm for the holiday. The Practice Facility and Golf Course will be
open with normal business hours July 1st -3rd so make your tee times to reserve your spot at your club!
The June specials will continue through July based on the feedback of our membership and guest demands. The July specials
will be: Wine and Nine every Friday night at 4:30pm, Sunday Special two players for $98.00 + tax after 10:00 am. These great deals in
July should help our owners and High Country Card members enjoy the course a few more times in the month of July.
The new golf website paired with the Continental GC app available for your phone has had a lot of great feedback to date,
please do not hesitate to call the Golf Shop with any questions or have one of our wonderful team members help with downloading the
app to your phone.
The Golf Shop currently has a large selection of merchandise which includes the exact 4 shirt rotation Jason Day wore at the
US open. Please come by to look at our selections or ask any questions you might have. Let’s have some fun on the course and relax
at the Oakmont after a round of Golf!!

GOLF
Tip From The Director of Instruction– The Ignored Bounce Angle
What is bounce angle and what does it mean to you? Bounce angle is the angle of the sole (bottom of the clubhead) in
relation to a horizontal line when the club is at the address position. What does that mean? What it really affects is the tendency of
your club to either dig into the ground or bounce off it. This is why it is either called the dig or bounce of the club. If you look at your
wedges, they will likely have two different numbers on them. One number will be the loft and the other will be the bounce angle. For
example, I have a 58 degree lob wedge with 10 degrees of bounce and it is represented on the clubhead as 58-10. Generally, your
sand wedge will have more bounce than all
of your other wedges. This is because the
higher bounce really helps prevent the club
from digging too far into the sand before the
clubhead gets to the ball. Think of the extra
bounce as resistance to a chunked shot.
This is true for both hitting out of the sand
and for a regular shot. However, if you tend
to play courses that are very firm with hard
bunkers as well, the extra bounce will also
encourage the dreaded blade shot. Most of
the courses we play on a normal basis are
plenty soft enough to warrant the extra
bounce. The only real need for a wedge
with very little bounce is if you are planning
to play a golf course set up like a PGA Tour
event or even more accurately, a European
Tour event. The low bounce helps cut
through really heavy rough, and it also allows you to play from the firm tight lies that
tour players experience every week.
Another thing to keep in mind about bounce angle is what happens when you close or open the clubface. When you open the
clubface you have added bounce to the club; the opposite is true for closing the face. It is because of this fact that we open the
clubface wide open for sand shots. This is also an important fact to keep in mind when you close your wedge down for your favorite
bump and run shot. You will likely have much more luck closing the face of a wedge with more bounce compared to a wedge with very
little bounce. Keep in mind that if you have a tight lie around the green, it probably won’t be in your best interest to open up your sand
wedge in order to hit a flop shot. More than likely that will just result in a skulled shot over the green.
The bottom line is that most of us don’t need low bounce wedges. If you insist on keeping one in your bag, make it your lob wedge but
keep it in mind when you are chipping around the green. Also, don’t forget about the bounce angle when you are manipulating the
clubface with all the different shots you will hit around the green. No matter what clubs you decide to play with, make sure to
understand how they will interact with the turf. If you need help deciding which wedges are best for you, I would be happy to help!

Tennis
From the Tennis Shack: The Next Best Thing I Also Pretty Good…
Whether it’s polishing established, grooved shots or tackling changes to ones that are not trustworthy– video analysis is
hands down one of the surest routes to success. Some people are camera shy or perhaps just don’t wish to see. Even if you’re simply
not interested or don’t have the time to book a video analysis lesson-don’t despair! The next best thing is handy, quick and, assuming
you’re not decorating from the Palace of Versailles
warehouse, inexpensive. I’m referring to a mirror.
You can wring a lot of value out of one and check
out your outfit at the same time. First, in terms of
polished, reliable strokes: before going to the
courts warm up by shadowing (without a ball) in
front of the mirror. Change up the pace while
noticing posture, balance and racquet angle at con
tact. (You may be surprised at all the nice stuff you
do.) Congratulations. Keep it up. Maybe these
“keeper” habits can inform strokes less reliable…
turning to shots you are attempting to shore up: get
in front of a mirror and give yourself a free lesson.
Slowly enact the changes you are trying to
establish to your “ new and improved” shot. Stop at
contact, reverse and begin again. Play around in
front of the mirror. Maybe begin a little side step,
paying attention to all new elements you’ve added
(or taken away) from your old stroke. Such a patient helper is the mirror you’ll to come back and rehearse good elements often, especially before you hit the courts. You can be your own pro by seeing at leisure that which you required to do in much less time when
play commences.

Pickleball
Pickleball– Fun and Addictive!
If you haven’t heard the news yet – Pickleball is CCC’s most popular new amenity and the fastest growing sport in North
America. Pickleball is played on a badminton sized court and is often described as a cross between ping pong and tennis. The
country club’s Pickleball courts are located
northeast of the clubhouse and just behind the
swimming pool.
What’s the best way to learn more about
Pickleball? One option is to simply come to the
courts in the mornings and watch the fun and
laughter characteristic of the sport. Spectators are
always welcome and seats are available. A second
option is to participate in the free clinics offered on
Tuesday and Thursday afternoon’s beginning at
1:00 pm. No registration is necessary, just come to
the courts wearing court shoes and a hat.
Your CCC dues entitle you to use the
Pickleball courts at times not reserved for use by
the Continental/Wyndham Pickleball Association.
The CWPA is a group of interested players who pay
the association an additional fee ($30 for individuals
and $50 for families). The CWPA in turn provides its
members with balls, guest paddles, and instruction
for its members and guests. You are welcome to
join the CWPA by signing up at the front desk.
The CWPA has the courts reserved from 8:00 am to 12 noon Monday through Saturday. Afternoon and evening court
times are open to all CCC members, as are all times on Sunday.
Please call Denise Byrnes at 928-526-4498 with any questions.
See you at the Courts. CAUTION: PICKLEBALL CAN BE ADDICTIVE!

More work has been done on the clubhouse property as
we paved the dirt parking lot between the upper tennis
courts and the cart barn. Additionally, the planters along
Oakmont Drive were completed adding much needed
landscaping to the frontage of the clubhouse.

Compliance Corner
Let’s face it. Trash and recycle bins are not the most attractive things in the world. They are big, bulky, and usually an unattractive color, like
bright green or mud brown. Not to mention, trash stinks! And while it is perfectly normal to see garbage bins lining the street on the day of
collection, storing your bins in such eye-catching locations does not give the impression of an appealing or mindful neighborhood. Not to
mention it is a violation of the Associations covenants to store garbage and/or recycle bins obtrusively.
The CC&R’s state, “Trash or garbage containers shall be kept screened by adequate planting so as to conceal them from view of streets and
of neighboring parcels.”
The Association’s Architectural Rules & Regulations state, “Trash and recycling bins may be placed curbside no earlier than the night
before pickup, and must be stored unobtrusively by the evening of pickup”
The CCC HOA isn’t trying to micromanage you so much as protect you and your property value.
And believe it or not, there are very practical reasons for having these storage restrictions
1. Aethetics – No one really likes looking at trash cans up and down a street
2. Animal control – Keeping your trash bins out can be an invitation for some unwanted guests. Although we all enjoy the aspects
of native wildlife nearby, no one enjoys when animals make a mess when rummaging for food in the trash.
3. Identity theft – Your trash can be a target for new age thieves. If a thief cannot spot your trash, they have nothing to rummage
through.
Therefore, in a collaborative community effort, inspections and subsequent written correspondence regarding
the improper storage of bins will commence July 14th, 2016
Bins may be placed curbside no earlier than the night before scheduled pickup
Bins must be stored either out of view or on the side of your garage or house by the evening of pickup
Bins may not be stored in front of a garage, in a driveway, curbside or on the street

Lake Update
Trash Talk
LAKE ELAINE
The board of directors continue to work towards a solution to
fix Lake Elaine. The board voted at the Tuesday, June 28th
Board Meeting to drain Lake Elaine and fix the lake with
either a 30 milliliter polyurethane liner or ESS-13 an
“Environmental Soil Sealant.” The solution that is ultimately
used will be determined after the lake is drained and the
lake bottom is evaluated by an engineer and the selected
contractor. There will be a HOA Town Hall meeting on July
30, 2016 at 10:00AM to further inform the HOA members to
the work to be done.
Got Bulky Trash? Curb it!
Old furniture, a worn out mattress, tree trimmings, oh my!! Leave
your bulky items on the curb. Per Flagstaff City Ordinance, please
make sure your bulky trash items are placed on the curb no sooner
than 1 week before the scheduled pick-up date!

WALNUT CANYON LAKES
Walnut Canyon Lakes got a rough start this year due to the
main water line was damaged and had to be repaired in
order to start up the irrigation on the lawn. It was also
determined that the irrigation controls were hit by lightning
so further repairs were necessary. The lawns are now
getting regular water and the grass is starting to come back.
The goose population continues to be a problem and we are
working on different possible solutions. CCC has purchased
a turf sweeper to help maintain the area. The sweeper will
be delivered on July 5th and we will immediately begin
cleaning the lawn area. To the residence on the lake and
those who enjoy walking on the lake, thank you for your
patience with the goose problem.
