Absences and Tardies--------------------------------------------------------------------------------If your child is ill and will be absent, please telephone the school on the day of the absence. Illness, medical appointments and bereavement are
the only reasons for an excused absence. All other absences are considered “unexcused”. If attendance for the full school day is not possible,
we appreciate the effort extended in having your child attend any portion of the day.



Illness – To ensure a healthy learning environment, students may not return to school until 24 hours after their fever is gone and they
are feeling well enough to attend school.
Independent Study - For students who will be away from school for 5 or more days at a time, we can prepare assignments so that
your child will receive credit for being in school. If this is desired, please let the office know at least five school days in advance.
Tardies - When students are late for school, they must check in at the office before going to class. The State of California and the
Loomis Union School District expect students to be in school on a daily basis. The only exceptions to this are illness, medical
appointments or bereavement. Students who are frequently absent or tardy often fall behind in learning and become at-risk for
retention. Absences and tardies affect the learning of every student in the classroom due to disruption. A student is considered to be
truant after being “. . . absent three full days without a valid excuse,” or “tardy more than thirty minutes on three separate occasions . . .
during the school year.” (California Education Code 48269 (a))
The Penryn School Staff will notify parents, by mail or telephone, if their child begins to accumulate numerous absences and/or tardies. Students
who are excessively absent or tardy may be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (S.A.R.B.). Referral to this board may result in a
home visit by child protective agencies or local law enforcement. The Placer County District Attorney’s Office may be notified in the event of
habitual truancy.
Accidents -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Parents will be notified in the event that their child should receive a serious injury while at school, or during a school-sponsored activity.
Whenever possible, parents will be asked to pick up the child for their own observation or examination by their family physician. If parents cannot
be reached, the student will be discharged to the person named on the emergency card. For this reason, please complete the card promptly and
return it to school. Kindly notify the office staff should you need to update your child’s emergency information.
Appointments ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If your child has an appointment that requires him/her to leave school early, please send a note or telephone the office staff prior to the
appointment. Students must be signed out in the office prior to leaving school grounds and will be released to parents and/or guardians, only.
The California Safe Schools Act may require office staff to request picture identification from an adult picking up a child during the school day. If
possible, please schedule appointments outside of the school day as much as possible so that they do not conflict with instructional time.
Arrival/Departure to and from School --------------------------------------------------------Yard duty supervision begins at 8:00am to the start of the school day and ends approximately ten minutes after the school day has ended.
Students should go directly to the playground when they arrive at school. Students are not permitted in classrooms at any time unless a teacher
is present. Please do not have your children arrive prior to 8:00am. Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up promptly after
school.
When dropping off or picking up your child in the loading zones, please do not leave your vehicle unattended. There are adequate parking stalls
available should you need to leave your vehicle. To ensure the safety of the children, use the designated loading zones when dropping off or
picking up your child.
Assemblies --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We will be having a short Spirit Assembly on some Friday mornings beginning at 8:20am. Throughout the school year, we may have additional
assemblies for your child. Our Parent Teacher Club and Leadership Team provide most of the funding for these events.
Assessments/Testing ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------In addition to the various informal and formal assessments that your child’s classroom teacher conducts on a regular basis, the Loomis Union
School District participates in the following formal assessments:
Smarter Balance Assessment test
Grades 3-8, given in the spring
District Writing Assessments
All grades, 3 times each year
P.E. Testing
Grades 5 and 7, given in spring
Constitution Test
Grade 8, given during the year
Classroom Reading Assessments
All grades, throughout the year
GATE Assessment
2nd Grade, given in spring, 3rd-8th grades as necessary in Fall
Athletics--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------At various times throughout the school year, junior high students will have the opportunity to participate in school-sponsored team sports.
L.U.S.D./L.B.A.L. ATHLETIC CODE
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
1.
All student/athletes participating in/for the L.B.A.L. must have and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. to be eligible including a maximum of one
D on any progress report or report card. Additional restrictions may be added by each school as needed. The student athlete
that does not meet grade criteria for participation is not eligible to practice or attend games until a current progress report
determines said player to be eligible again.
2.
Student must maintain “good standing” behavior as determined by the schools discipline plan. Suspension or equivalent work
option results in removal from the team as defined by the school discipline plan. Repeated infractions or a serious infraction will
result in a student being dropped from the team.
3.
The student must attend school for at least two thirds of the school day to participate in a game
that day. A team member that is excused from P.E. by a parent may not play in a game that day.
4.
A donation of $30 per athlete, per sport is requested to help support the district athletic league.
Back-to-School Night ----------------------------------------------------------------------Classroom presentations will be presented to parents and guardians and are designed to give information regarding specific classroom policies
and procedures. This evening is not intended for a review of your child’s progress in his/her class.
Bicycles/ Scooters/Skates----------------------------------------------------------------------Bicycles are not to be ridden on the school grounds at any time. They must be walked to and from the bike racks and be parked in the bike
racks. Students may not ride or tamper with other students’ bicycles. In accordance with the state law, helmets MUST be worn while riding to
and from school. Failure to comply with these rules will result in disciplinary action and/or the loss of bike riding privileges. Skating of any kind
on school grounds is prohibited. Please leave skateboards, skates, and roller blades at home.
Birthdays -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you would like to send a birthday gift for your child’s class you must make arrangements with the classroom teacher beforehand. We
encourage families to bring non-food items to celebrate instead of sugary treats. Any food treats presented will need to be done in accordance
with our school and district allergy response plan. Balloons or presents for your child should be presented at home as valuable learning time is
lost when classrooms are interrupted. Birthday party invitations will only be distributed at school if all students in the class are invited.
Books and Supplies ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Students will be provided with school textbooks and some basic school materials. Each student is responsible for handling these materials in a
careful manner. In the case of lost or damaged textbooks, library books, or other school materials, the child/family will be responsible for
replacement costs. Teachers may request that parents provide their child with supplemental school supplies (binders, folders, etc.) that will help
to promote organizational skills. Please check the school website or contact the office for a copy of the grade level supply list.
Calling Classrooms -------------------------------------------------------------------We make every effort to minimize disruptions that interfere with your child’s learning. Therefore, we encourage parents to leave messages for
teachers using voice mail or e-mail. The office will not interrupt classrooms to forward telephone calls from parents or relay non urgent
messages to students. You may contact any staff member via e-mail by typing the individual’s first initial, last name, then the suffix “@loomisusd.k12.ca.us”. (example: [email protected])
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices----------------------------------------------------------------Cell phones and electronic devices must be kept out of site in student backpacks and they are to be turned off. Cell phones and electronic
devices may not be used during the school day, including recesses, lunch and passing periods. They may only be used after school only.
Students do not need cell phones at school and should bring them at their own risk. Misused cell phones and electronic devices will be
confiscated and brought to the principal's office. Students who have their cell phone out and or are using them at school will earn demerits and
lose school privileges. *Parents should have their cell phones silenced while visiting/volunteering at school.
Chaperones-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Penryn School follows State Law concerning chaperones:
1. All chaperones, coaches, volunteers, and parents driving students on school trips (athletic events, field trips, etc.,) are required to
have the appropriate auto insurance. Please see the school secretary for the paperwork and criteria. Parents are to complete
paperwork at our Loomis District Office at the beginning of each school year to ensure proper coverage.
2. All chaperones, coaches, volunteers, and parents working/driving with students without a credentialed teacher present must
be live scanned through our Loomis District Office. Please see the school secretary for the paperwork and criteria.
Classroom Visitation -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Parents are welcome to visit the school when it is in session. All visitors are required, by law, to sign in at the office and to wear a visitor’s badge
while on campus. Kindly contact your child’s teacher in advance when you intend to visit.
If there is a matter that you wish to discuss at length, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher for a conference that will occur
outside of class time. Parents should have their cell phones silenced while visiting/volunteering at school.
Closed Campus -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Loomis Union School District has established that students must remain on campus until the end of the day, once they arrive on the school
grounds. If any student chooses to leave the school grounds without parent/teacher
permission AND adult supervision, he/she will be classified as truant and will be subject to disciplinary action. Law enforcement may also be
summoned if the student’s whereabouts are unknown.
Computer Use ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Students will have on-going opportunities to access technology using the numerous computers on campus. Students abusing this privilege by
mistreating computer equipment or by accessing inappropriate material may be denied access to school computers. In addition, the display or
creation of inappropriate or offensive materials may warrant suspension from school or other disciplinary action at the discretion of the
administration.
Conferences ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Parent teacher conferences will be scheduled at the end of the first trimester for all students and at the end of the second trimester at the
teacher’s discretion. Conferences are used for reporting progress and charting goals for students. Parents are encouraged to set up additional
conferences as needed. It is critical that parents attend conferences when the teacher requests them, particularly if a student is performing
below grade level or is at risk of being retained.
Dances -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Seventh and eighth grade students will have the opportunity to attend evening dances. Teachers, administrators
and parent chaperones will also be in attendance. Students must have at least 90 merits and may not be in good academic standing. The
Loomis Union School District does not permit students from other schools to attend school dances, unless accompanied by chaperones from
their school. It is not appropriate for students to attend dances as “couples” or with a “date”. Students who choose to dance in a vulgar or
suggestive manner will be asked to leave the dance. The 7th and 8th grade students host the 6th grade invitational dance in May of each school
year. This dance is a nice tradition that welcomes the 6th grade students into junior high school.
PBIS Program------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PBIS Program is a positive discipline program that seeks to develop an intrinsic motivation for doing good deeds for the school or others, it
positively rewards students modeling the 3Bs, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
1. Staff members will have reward stickers that say Penryn Paw-some and/or Panther Pride on them.
2. When they see a student modeling the 3Bs, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe, they could be given a Paw-some ticket
which results in a student sticker. When a student gets one it is a BIG Deal!
3. We are asking that any staff or volunteer who see a student wearing a Panther Pride/Paw-some sticker they ask that child what they
did to earn the award. We are hoping that at least 3 people acknowledge a child wearing the sticker empowering the 3Bs!
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Safe
Some Positive Recognition through PBIS are:
 Panther Pride-Paw-some Recognition
 Verbal praise and recognition given directly to the student
 Special classroom and school privileges and responsibilities
 Special notes and behavior grams to students and/or their parents
Discipline Policy -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The school-wide behavior plan is carefully designed to protect all children and to establish an orderly learning environment for all students. The
school staff will teach and encourage appropriate behavior and will assist each student in correcting inappropriate behavior. Parents can assist
by reviewing the behavior policies and by supporting school personnel should a behavior problem arise.
School Discipline Philosophy
Penryn’s reputation will be reflected by the students’ behavior in the classroom, on the playground, in assemblies, at athletic events, and on field
trips. Students are the key to making Penryn School a school to be proud of. Students are expected to show respect to staff members, respect
the rights and property of other students, and maintain high standards of decency and courtesy. The Penryn School Expectations, outlined
below, were developed to serve as a guide for students to promote high standards of behavior. These are also coming out of our PBIS team.
The management of each individual classroom is the responsibility of the classroom teacher. It is the teacher’s responsibility to insure that the
classroom environment is conducive to learning. The specific details of how this is to be managed are left to the professional judgment of the
teacher. There are several broad guidelines that the teachers are to follow:
All school rules apply to students on their way to school, while at school, on the way home from school, and at school events, even if not during
the regular school day.




All classroom rules need to be posted in the room.
At the first of the year teachers will review classroom rules, procedures and expectations throughout the year.
The teacher is to inform the student and notify the parent if the student is having persistent behavior problems in class.
Extreme disruptions could result in an immediate office referral without parent notification.
For students in grades K-3, the classroom teacher will handle routine discipline issues through their classroom management system along with
the Merit System that was developed with PBIS and, when needed, the support of the administrative staff.
For students in grades 4-8, the Merit System has been developed for unacceptable behavior that cannot be handled within the classroom
management system.
Discipline Policy (K-8th Grades)
In order to encourage exemplary behavior, the following Merit System has been developed:
Merit System
1) Each student begins with 100 merits.
2) Those students with less than 90 merits will be placed on student probation.
3) Students on probation are not allowed to attend or participate in extra-curricular activities, student activities, and extra-curricular field
