PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Friends in Christ,
Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday,
just as two weeks ago the Second Sunday
of Easter was given the name Divine Mercy
Sunday. The richness of the texts for today’s celebra on is made clear when we
come upon the Shepherd psalm sandwiched between the overwhelming response in the Acts of the Apostles to the preaching of Simon Peter (some
3000 people were bap zed that day) and the witness of
what Christ does for his sheep in 1Peter 2:25, not to
men on the beau ful gospel passage from John 10:1-10.
Addi onally this liturgical celebra on falls on the civil
calendar when we honor Mothers with the civic holiday
known as Mother’s Day. As Catholics, Mary takes on a
special prominence in the month of May (not to men on
October) so we will be having our annual crowning of
Mary today.
As I announced last weekend, the bishop is sending me to St. Ma hew parish come July which is a mere 3 miles from where
my mother resides. In past years I have brought my mother here to St. Clement for Mother’s Day. I have also had the experience in the past of doing Mission Coop weekends on Mother’s Day and bringing my mother and sister with
me to those parishes. As mom no longer travels for a variety of reasons, it
will be good that I can easily go to her. Someone last weekend said that I can
go home to mama’s cooking. I told him that I will probably be doing the cooking, God help her. When I reflect upon the rela onship I have with my mother, it occurs to me that I am not unlike many if not most priests who seem to
have a very deep bond with their mother. Although it will be difficult to leave
St. Clement, I am overwhelmed at the graciousness of the bishop to consider
not just my mother’s needs but my need to take care of her. I remember
Bishop Lynch telling us how he found out that he was being elevated to the
episcopacy. Some Cardinal called him and told him that his mother had been
working very hard. Mind you this was some weeks, if not months a er his
mother had passed away. Sensing Monsignor Lynch’s confusion, the Cardinal
explained in his Italian accent that she was asking the Holy Spirit to speak to
the Holy Father about making her son a bishop. Every Mother’s Day I use a
par cular formula for blessing mothers. It is one that is unique, crea ve and
of course borrowed from a brother priest whom I admire. When I saw how
well it worked for him in his community, I asked for a copy and have been using it ever since. That priest by the way, is Fr. Mike O’Brien. We did the Good
Leaders Good Shepherds program some years ago and I know you will find
him to be an inspira on as I have over the years. As we prepare for one of
our own, Robin Emery to become the mother of a priest next weekend, let us
be inspired by how God shepherds His people.
Peace in Christ,
Welcome Home!

En años pasados he traído a mi mama aquí a San
ir a visitarla fácilmente.
Padre Tom Anastasia
