The Lone Star Gourd festival is a family friendly event where children can experience hands on gourd art crafting. New
Braunfels is also full of family activities, from water recreation, trains, caverns, wildlife and more.
MAKE & TAKE – Saturday & Sunday
During August, families can experience the incredible diversity of gourd art. This year
Discovery World Learning Center is teaming with the Texas Gourd Society to sponsor
the Kid’s Make and Take booth where children create their own gourd art. The project
booth is free to ages 17 and under. It is open all day Saturday and Sunday during the
show.
Discovery World Learning Center provides educational daycare for
children ages 6 weeks – 12 years in a clean and nurturing
environment where children will be safe. Their professional
curriculum helps students build solid foundations for the future.
They focus on providing the highest quality Education, surpassing
regulatory standards to enable Growth, Safety and
Communication.. Their curriculum includes 3 healthy meals per
day, outside playtime, fitness programs, arts & crafts, interactive learning and no screen time.
GOURD ART COMPETITION
Anyone may enter the gourd art completion. Children and youths are especially encouraged to
enter. Check the Competition Rules and Guidelines for divisions and categories. Entries
postmarked by August 4, 2016 are free. Entries after that date are $1. Entries must be brought
to the New Braunfels Civic Convention Center on Thursday, August 18 between noon and 3:00
pm. Ribbons are awarded to first through third place and a ribbon is also given for the Best of
Youth Division.
DEMONSTRATION BOOTH
Demonstrations of different gourd art techniques run daily. Our artists are available to
answer questions and give you tips about growing, harvesting, cleaning, cutting, coloring or
designing your gourd. Demo’s include chip carving, use of ink dyes, birdhouses, gourd rims,
different types of tools and more.

Discovery World Learning Center has been providing educational daycare since 1992. Their childcare
methods surpass regulatory standards, including:

OTHER NEW BRAUNFELS ACTIVITIES
The Lone Star Gourd Festival isn’t the only happening in New Braunfels. We hope you can come and spend the weekend.
Schlitterbaun is a top pick. But don’t miss the many other great activities in the area. The Natural Bridge Caverns offers
adventure tours, an open maze, zip lining, tours of the caverns, gem and fossil mining and more.
Landa Park has activities and picnic areas under giant oak trees. Children can feed the ducks, play miniature golf, ride the
train or paddle boats and have fun in the play area. There are aquatic facilities for both older and younger children
including water slides and fountains. There are also walking paths, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits.
The McKenna Children’s Museum at 801 W. San Antonio Street is full of interactive displays and shows. Their Outdoor
Water Table is one of their most popular exhibits. It has all new features and interactive stations such as the boat racing
ramp, fishing pond, high powered squirters with targets, water wheel, bucket conveyor belt and more. Other exhibits
include: Lend-A-Hand Ranch, the Grocery Store, Outside the Lines Art Studio, the Tot Spot, Destination Space and more.
Your child’s imagination will make them a doctor, banker, gardener scientist, artist or inventor!
Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo houses over 500 animals and nearly every species of animal on earth. Primates,
alligators, exotic hoof stock, birds, cats and of course, snakes make up just a few of the residents. Check out the summer

armadillo encounter, carnivore feeding, baby animals, white lions, and lots more happenings every 30 minutes.
Hollow Tree Ranch is a short 20 minute drive from the Civic Center, up Highway 46 at 789 Herbelin Rd. People
of all ages can learn about horses. They have morning, evening and moonlight trail rides and riding lessons.
