Freshman Family Conference: Prior to freshman year, each
student and his family are required to meet with a member of the faculty
or administration. During this one-on-one meeting they are introduced to
the ideals of a Jesuit culture. These principles, known as the Graduate at
Graduation, are: Open to growth, Intellectually Competent, Loving,
Religious and Committed to Justice.
Junior Family Conference: The summer prior to junior year,
Cura Personalis
The Jesuit ideal of Cura Personalis is a Latin phrase
signifying care for the whole person. At St. Xavier we are intentional
in our approach to how we interact with the young men that walk
our hallways. It is our responsibility and sincere desire that all of
the students attending St. Xavier High School feel welcomed and
that we create an atmosphere where they feel a part of something
greater than themselves. To this end, our faculty and administration
take a deliberate approach to supporting all of our students and
embolden them to cultivate their unique gifts and talents. St. Xavier
offers a myriad of opportunities and programs that allow for this
personal care.
students once again meet with a member of the faculty or administration to
review their first two years, and reflect on their personal journey at St. Xavier
High School. In reflecting on these early experiences, young men establish
goals as they begin to develop more significant relationships with others and
grow in greater understanding of themselves.
Freshman Guidance: The freshman and sophomore guidance office
is comprised of five certified counselors who are assigned to each student.
The counselor will care for and support each student during his freshman
and sophomore years with the following objectives in mind: to understand
their interests and strengths; meet with them in groups to ensure a safe and
comfortable environment; to share concerns during these formative years;
and to create future goals.
College Guidance: College counseling focuses on preparing
students to gain admittance into their first-choice college. The five certified
counselors in this office work with students one-on-one to understand future
goals and academic strengths. The ultimate outcome is that we assist each
student in finding the best-fit college or university.
MENTORING: Freshmen homerooms are organized by zip codes and
neighborhoods to assist new students get to know other young men from
their surrounding communities. Five seniors, known as Bomber Pilots,
serve as mentors in each freshman homeroom. When a freshman enters
St. Xavier, he is supported by upperclassmen and an intentionally
choreographed system that will lead to a seamless transition from
grade school to high school.
ORIENTATION: To assist freshmen
make the transition to St. Xavier, they
participate in a two-day orientation
program that includes student leadership,
homeroom formation, prayer services,
introductions to faculty and administrators,
games, a building tour, and a walk through
of their schedule. All of these activities are
led by a trained group of 80 senior leaders
who also serve as Bomber Pilots.
Freshman House System: An academic and social journey with
peers, the freshman class is comprised of just over four hundred young
men from across the Tri-state area. It is often asked, “How do they find
their place within the school?” St. Xavier has been pro-active in devising
a house system that benefits academically and socially. The system,
comprised of five groupings, gives students a place to call home
within the larger school. The house structure is designed to achieve
a number of goals, including the student’s personal and/or social
adjustment as well as his academic adjustment. Under the auspices
of a freshman house at St. X every student begins to experience what
promises to be four life-changing years.
EXTRACURRICULAR: St. Xavier
High School offers more than 110
co-curricular activities, including
17 Division I athletic programs and a
myriad of intramural opportunities.
With such a variety of activities
available, every student has the
ability to become involved.
Participation in extra-curricular
opportunities encourages students
to cultivate their gifts and further
explore interests and talents.
RETREATS AND MASSES:
Retreats and masses offer students the
opportunity to explore their spirituality with staff, faculty and fellow
students in a safe and open environment. Sharing inspires students
to discover more about themselves while opening their hearts in
significant relationships with others.
