Wildlife Photography 101 Class
With Ken Conger
Monday, January 25 | 9:00 a.m.
Are you using a digital camera and enjoy photographing in the outdoors, you have a good
eye and that wildlife photo did not turn out right, then this seminar is for you. The course
is primarily for upper beginners or serious hobbyists, who wish to take their wildlife/nature
photography to the next level and own something more than a point and shoot camera. Class
segments will concentrate on wildlife photography by teaching the fundamentals (digital sensor
and megapixels, equipment, composition, aperture/depth of field) and advanced techniques
of digital photography (histogram interpretation, use of ISO, Autofocus, light compensation,
required shutter speeds, tools of the trade). Specific concentration will portray "how to get the
shot" using different wildlife photo scenarios. This is a three-segment seminar. Part one, will be
classroom instruction. Part two, is a field session with students taking photographs and applying
taught classroom essentials outdoors. Part three, will be back in the classroom to review
captured images and applying a digital workflow using Adobe Photoshop. At the conclusion
of this course students will have an understanding of the basic operations of their camera,
understand photography terminology, what it takes for a good wildlife photo for both printing/
web and tips to becoming a semi-pro photographer.
Requirements: Camera and manual. A tripod for the field session would be helpful.
Time: 8 hours
Cost: $150 per student
Class is limited to 12 people. Please contact Becky Salaun at 239-949-5023 to reserve your spot.
About Ken Conger:
After a rewarding career as a Virginia game warden and Alaska park ranger, Ken has carried his motivation and enthusiasm for wildlife protection
over to his passion of wildlife photography. He has attained both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree. Ken's interest in photography
began at a young age. Wildlife photography has always been his concentration. The majority of his images utilize available early morning and late
afternoon light to capture the natural color and beauty of wildlife. His photographs are primarily taken within National Parks and Fish & Wildlife
Refuges and strictly of wild animals within six of the seven continents. His annual treks to remote locations are to be inspired, obtain unique
images, and hopefully to educate as well as encourage viewers to connect with nature with his photos. A published author and award winning
photographer (National Wildlife Federation, National Parks Competition, Sony International Photography Contest, Popular Photography Contest),
receiving “Best in Show” within art festivals, Ken's images have adorned a number of magazine covers and in numerous nature calendars. A wildlife
photographer professional since 2010, Ken currently teaches wildlife photography through full day classes and private lessons, leads international
photo tours and participates in art festivals along the east coast.

Happy New Year!
Our entire Bonita Bay Club Golf Staff wishes you and your family a happy and
prosperous new year. We are all looking forward to another fun-filled season here at
the club. Already we are witnessing members participating in more events, showcasing
their fantastic club to their guests, and playing more rounds of golf.
Over 280 members and guests participated in our 3rd Annual Family Fun Golf Day
on December 29. This popular event was highlighted by a 4 hole fun course, 14 hole
tournament, free lessons and clinics, and the 25 foot tall inflatable Golfzilla proved to be
the highlight of the event.
We all look forward to seeing you around the club soon,
EJ McDonnell

Creekside Hole Allocation Complete
Thanks to everyone who assisted in the new hole allocations during
November by returning your scores from the beautifully renovated
Creekside course.
In determining new allocations, the Handicap Committee used the
regression method, which requires a minimum of 400 scores from
the full range of course handicaps. This method creates numerical
data that allow the Committee to finalize the allocations. (For more
information on hole allocations, please go to the USGA Handicap
Manual; http://www.usga.org/Handicapping/handicap-manual.htm
A common perception is that the holes are ranked from toughest
to easiest when doing the allocation. This is not the case. The basic
principle of allocating handicap strokes is to equalize the abilities of
players at different handicap levels. So, the holes with the “toughest”
ranking are those for which higher handicappers need some extra
help to compete with lower handicappers.
New Creekside scorecards have arrived and are now in use.
If you have any questions the Handicap Committee can be contacted
via email [email protected]

Details: Seven years ago, Dennis Finnigan initiated the
Handicap Committee at Bonita Bay. Passionate about
creating a level playing field for members, Dennis has
devoted countless hours to this key function within our
club. Just over a year ago, Dennis introduced GolfHITS
and is currently wrapping up his consultative role on
the technology. At the December Handicap Committee
meeting, Dennis was presented with a certificate of
appreciation from the club by Board Member & Golf
Committee Chair, Paul Muehr.

Instructor’s Corner
January 2015
We are excited to see what the New Year has to offer! Your instructional staff is fully committed to seeing you all improve with your swings/games. We
are stepping on the gas pedal with our Titleist Performance Institute programming. We have already shared a number of great testimonies on how this has
made a difference in not just the golf game, but also the quality of life. Some have said that they are not sore or tired nearly as much after playing golf or
other activities. The other real advantage is that your golf instructor/fitness will be in communication on your behalf. Never before has the Bonita Bay Club
had this type of opportunity to really get the TOUR EXPERIENCE. In my 22 + years as a professional, this is such an amazing way for you to not just talk
about getting better but there are measurable ways to see you are getting better.
We are implementing TPI in many of our instructional clinics/golf schools. If you have more questions, feel free to contact one of your TPI Certified Staffers
as we will share in more detail how you can get involved. Your TPI Staffers are as follows: EJ McDonnell, Rob Dugan, Brian Glasco, Richie Packish, Jonathan
Sutera, Jeff Heilman, Ric Nalyd, Hugh Vaughn, and soon to be Kyle Heaton, and Michael Spurr. We also have 6 Fitness Staffers that are TPI Certified as well.
We are prepared to make a difference.
Our Instructional Staff thanks you for all the support that you have given to all of us! Let’s have an amazing golf year in 2016!

Croquet
Let the Croquet Fun Begin!
Rule of the Month
The striker's mallet can hit the ball only once in each turn. Care must
be taken when hitting close to the hoop or another ball. Aim at an angle
away from these objects to avoid the ball hitting and coming back into the
mallet for a double tap. If double tap occurs, the opponent has the choice
of leaving the balls where they ended or placing all balls where they were
at the beginning of the turn. The turn is over.

Croquet
Two neighborhoods have held
successful outings this season. Two
more are scheduled for January 13

Practice Tip
Take at least 8 balls to the court when practicing.
Practice hitting one ball into another ball from 3 feet. Vary the distance you want the second ball to travel by shortening or lengthening your
backswing. Repeat this 24 times.
Position the balls around the peg, 5 feet away. Hit the peg 24 times. As you become proficient, increase the distance from the peg.
Practice distance control by hitting these balls back toward the peg, stopping as close to the peg as possible.
*Inquire about Golf Croquet School, a 2-day, fun-filled opportunity at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach.

Add More POWER to Your Serve!
Everyone wants a power serve! The players with the most power are those that use their legs and momentum for power, instead of their shoulder
or arm speed.
See the “less power” in image #1. Notice that my body is vertical. My head is closer to my back foot than my front foot. My left/front knee is
behind the baseline. Both of my feet are flat on the ground. There is only a slight bend to my left/front knee. And even though my toss is in front
of my body, to hit this serve hard I will have to swing very fast. When I serve this way, the fastest my serves will travel are about 65-70 MPH.
Compare with the “more power” in image #2. Notice that my body is leaning forward. My head is closer to my front foot than my back foot. My
left/front knee is in front of the baseline. Both my heels are off the ground. Both my knees are bent. And my toss, which is also in front of my
body, requires my body to move forward both before and after I strike the ball with my racquet. When I serve this way, the fastest my serves will
travel are about 110-115 MPH.
While not every player can add 45 MPH to their serve just by modeling the “more power” image, I think it’s probable that all of our Bonita Bay Club
players can model this “more power” image to increase their power by at least 20% just by adding power from their legs and body momentum.
See you on the courts!

How Do I Choose a New Racquet?
Jamie Stevenson
PTR Certified Instructor/USRSA
Master Racquet Technician
With so many choices on the market today, how do I know
what kind or brand I should pick for my next racquet? While
there is no one easy answer, there are some good guidelines
to follow.
Determine what kind of player you are. Are you a singles
player who hits with power, or a doubles player who needs
control? Most manufacturers carry a complete line of frames
for each style.
What kind and brand do you use now and are you
comfortable with it?
Once you have answered these questions, ask your pro to
recommend at least 2 or 3 different brands in the style you
prefer and give them a demo on court. Remember, if you are
confident in your equipment, it will help you be confident in
your game!

LOVE THE NET in 2016!
Dominique Levin
USPTA Tennis Professional
Roger Federer hired serve and volley expert Stefan Edberg to improve his net game. It
paid huge dividends. He added a new tactic called the SABR (Sneak Attack by Roger) to his
arsenal, won six ATP World Tour titles, reached 11 finals and finished the year ranked No.3.
What a year! He knew he had to become more aggressive to keep up with opponents in
their mid-20s, such as baseline gladiator Novak Djokovic. Why was Federer so successful at
the net? Because he took time and space away from his opponents and made the court feel
very small!
That is a tactic that can also be applied to your doubles game. Let Roger’s success story be
an inspiration and learn to love the net. Talk to one of your BBC Tennis professionals about
improving your TERMINATOR skills by learning how to fake, pinch and poach!

The Beauty of Body Treatments
Kick off the new year with a healthy glow! Just like the skin on your face, the skin all over your
body needs special treatment as well.
Top 5 Benefits of a Body Treatment
BUFF AND REJUVENATE: Not only do full body treatments stimulate cell renewal, they can
transform the look of your skin! A deep exfoliation treatment like our Exfoliating Body Glow
will remove dull surface cells and reveal supple, glowing skin underneath. Choose the natural
ingredients most beneficial to your skin.
STIMULATE COLLAGEN: Just like getting a facial, an all-over body treatment like our Hydrating
Guava Body Wrap will stimulate cell renewal, making your skin more resilient. This helps to
prevent wrinkles, signs of aging, and improves overall skin tone.
DETOX: Environmental damage and even ingested toxins from what we eat has an impact on the
appearance of our skin. A body treatment like our Purifying Body Masque can help you eliminate
surface impurities, and draw out damaging toxins.
STIMULATE CIRCULATION: The rubbing action of any body scrub helps boost circulation and
helps drain the lymph nodes by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface. Combined with the
exotic ingredients found in our Renewal Body Ritual, this treatment will help restore suppleness
and improve overall skin condition.
RELAXATION: A total body ritual packs in the benefits of skincare, and a massage into one
luxurious treatment. You’ll find yourself fully relaxed and your muscles will thank you!
Improve the look and feel of your skin with a variety of body indulgences offered at the Spa!

The New Year Brings Hope for Change and Self Improvement
Set Realistic Goals and Have a Plan
About 45% of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions, most of which are health-related. And while 75% of those who
make resolutions keep them through the first week, this numbers falls
to just 46% after six months (University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical
Psychology, 12/13/2012).
If most of us fail to stick to these resolutions then why do we bother to
make them? The answer is simple. The New Year gives us the chance
to start from scratch- to have a clean slate. Most of us want to better
ourselves, and the fact that we want to make these resolutions year
after year is a good thing because we have hope and believe that we can
change.
The key to change and making these resolutions stick is to not rely on willpower, rather have a plan for success. Your
plan starts with setting realistic and attainable goals, and these goals should matter to you. Don’t make a resolution or
set a goal because someone else thinks you should; this is a mistake that many people make when it comes to losing
weight. Next, outline the steps for accomplishing your goal(s) and again, be realistic. For example, if you want to
lose weight, decide what changes you need to make (and what you are willing to commit to) regarding your diet and/
or exercise program. Setting milestones along the way can help you stay on course. Finally, prepare for set backs and
forgive yourself if you “fall off of the wagon.”

opportunity for improvement. We will build your customized

can make the biggest improvement in your swing. We will work with your TPI Certified Golf Professional to give you an experience like that which the tour players experience.
There are a number of packages available that combine golf as well as fitness instruction or you can choose from an a la carte
menu that includes the movement screen, a strength and power screen, one-on-one training, a K-Vest swing analysis, and
biofeedback on the K-Vest.
Want to know more? Join us for our next TPI Townhall meeting on Friday, January 15, at 4:00 p.m., and meet the key
players from both Golf and Fitness. To register, call the golf shop at 498-2626.
Golf Fitness Tip of the Month: How to correct “C” Posture
“C” Posture describes what occurs when your shoulders are slumped forward at address and you have
a definitive roundedness to your thoracic spine. It can be caused by a number of factors including
limited thoracic spine extension (the middle of your back doesn’t move well), tight pectorals, scapular
instability, and even using clubs that are too short for you.
Try this exercise to improve thoracic mobility:

The Vine
With 2015 in the books, we look forward to an exciting peak-season here
at Bonita Bay Club. Our first wine dinner of the calendar year is quickly
approaching. January 21 will feature the selections of Sturino Trotta Cellars
paired with another opulent menu by Chef Richard and his talented team of
culinarians.
Sturino Trotta Cellars was created out of a love for fine wines, and their
celebration of family, friends, and joyous living. Their philosophy is to produce
highly stylistic, premium wines by hand in precious lots, sourcing every grape
from exceptional vineyards across Napa Valley. David Trotta, proprietor, will
be here personally to present these exceptional wines and share with us
the passion and history behind them. There are a very limited number of
reservations remaining for this exclusive dinner.
Looking ahead to next month, on February 11, the Fireside Room will host an Italian Wine Dinner with
themed cuisine and the world-class wines of the famed Antinori Family. Reservations are open, so be sure
not to miss this event, celebrating one of the most beloved food and wine regions on the planet! On behalf
of the entire Food & Beverage Team, I wish you a happy and healthy new year.
Cheers!

Kicking off the New Year!
Unspoiled Will Spoil You
A new book tells the story, from vision to reality, of the creation of Bonita Bay –
a nature preserve that includes over 3,300 homes, three golf courses,
a marina, and twelve miles of trails!
Available at the Bonita Bay Club Concierge Desk
Community Association Activities Center
Price: $20
Checks Payable to Preserve Bonita Bay, Inc.
All proceeds to nonprofit to benefit Bonita Bay!
Dave Shellenbarger a resident of Bonita Bay and a member of the Club tells the
story of Bonita Bay in a new book, Unspoiled Will Spoil You, which was recently
released for sale. It explores the development and construction, the transition to
resident governance, and the outlook for the community in the future.
The book is documented through decades of news articles and community records, and is supplemented with dozens
of interviews with those involved. The book is available at Bonita Bay Club’s Concierge and also through Amazon’s
Create Space self-publishing portal and the Bonita Bay Community Association office. All proceeds from the book
will be directed to a non-profit corporation called Preserve Bonita Bay Inc. The goal of the non-profit is to benefit
conservation and recreation in and around Bonita Bay, and to recognize the contribution of David Shakarian, whose
vision led to the creation of the community.
More information is available at unspoiledwillspoilyou.org, or by contacting Dave
Shellenbarger, at [email protected] or by phone at 239.949.0668 or 248.891.9365.

Metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly
with Maryle Barbé
Mating of the Monarchs
Golfers can stop by the Ladies
Tee on Bay Island #17 where Paul,
Superintendent has planted Milkweed
which is the host plant for the Monarch
Butterfly and observe these beauties!
The Egg
Eggs are laid on the underside of the
Milkweed leaf and baby caterpillars
take only 4 days to hatch.
The Larvae (caterpillar)
Baby caterpillars or larvae will eat the
Milkweed leaves and will be fully grown
in 4 weeks.
The Pupa (chrysalis)
The caterpillar attaches itself to a stem
on the Milkweed plant using a strand
of silk and transforms into a chrysalis
where the caterpillar's body parts
are undergoing transformation into a
butterfly. This is called metamorphosis.
This is one of the most beautiful
chrysalis' with a golden neckband!
The Empty Chrysalis
The First Generation
The Monarch upon emerging from the
chrysalis must dry their wings and then
start feeding on the Milkweed nectar as
they only live 2-6 weeks before laying
eggs for the second generation. This
process is then repeated for the third
generation. The fourth generation is
different as they migrate and can live
6-8 months until the whole life cycle
starts again!
