ADENA SPRINGS RE-ENTERS FLORIDA STALLION MARKET
equisportphotos.com
Adena Springs South, a 3,800-acre farm in Williston, is standing four stallions in 2015 after having closed its stud barn in 2009.
By Joe Nevills
It’s hardly breaking news to say that
Frank Stronach has invested heavily in the
Florida Thoroughbred program.
The head and namesake of The Stronach Group owns Florida’s marquee racetrack, Gulfstream Park, and last year he
leased a spiraling Calder Race Course
from Churchill Downs Inc., re-christened
it Gulfstream Park West, and opened it to
positive reviews.
On the bloodstock side, Stronach is a
frequent business partner of Fasig-Tipton
Sales Co., most recently hosting the company’s boutique sale of 2-year-olds in training
at Gulfstream for the first time in 2015.
More importantly, he is the largest
private property owner in central Florida’s
Marion County, home of Adena Springs
South. The 3,800-acre facility in Williston,
Fla., is in the midst of a comeback season as
a stallion operation after a six-year hiatus,
in which the property served exclusively as
a training center for Stronach’s runners.
If all goes to plan, the reopening of the
Adena Springs South stallion operation
could kick-start a cycle of positive returns
between the two wings of Stronach’s Thoroughbred interests in Florida.
“The Florida breeding community has
been energized the last couple years, and
the timing just seemed right to re-enter
the market,” said Jack Brothers of Adena
Springs. “We’ve had a lot of success there
in the past. We started Macho Uno down
there, and it’s a great facility. The stars
were aligned for a return.”
Like the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars in
1995, Adena Springs South assembled its
roster for the 2015 breeding season with
an expansion draft of sorts, combining
rookies with veterans moved in from other
franchises.
Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Fort
Larned came to Florida via Adena
Springs’s main farm in Paris, Ky., and
stands the current season for an advertised
fee of $12,500. His first foals are arriving
this year.
Canadian champion Hunters Bay
entered stud last year at Heritage Stallions
in Chesapeake City, Md., and will stand for
$5,000, while Grade 3 winner and fellow
second-year sire City Wolf will stand for
$4,000 after debuting at Pleasant Acres
Stallions in Morriston, Fla.
Grade 1 winner Capo Bastone will stand
his first year at stud in 2015 after being
purchased by Adena Springs as a stallion
prospect for $300,000 at last year’s FasigTipton Kentucky select fall mixed sale. He
is advertised at a stud fee of $4,000.
Brothers said the early response from
Florida breeders has been overwhelmingly
positive.
“We were very pleased with the reception we’ve had,” Brothers said. “We had
our open house and our stallion show,
and that was very well attended, and the
comments and feedback from local breeders has been really heartwarming, to say
the least. They’ve welcomed us back with
open arms.”
Lonny Powell, chief executive and
executive vice president of the Florida
Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’
Association, said the groundswell of excitement from breeders toward the new Adena
Springs initiative stands to create a “rising
tide lifts all boats” situation in Florida and
boost the overall quality of the Floridabred program.
“It’s a nice vote of confidence,” Powell
said. “The thing about Frank is he supports
his stallions, so not only is he going to send
them here, he’s going to do everything he
can to make sure they’re successful. Looking at it from our situation, if he’s supporting with his own mares plus some outside
mares, this is all a win for Florida. It means
more Florida-breds that are going to be
hitting the ground and campaigning here
or elsewhere, and that’s a good thing.”
Stronach has positioned Fort Larned as
the flagship stallion of the revived operation, aided by the synergy between his
various properties. While the 7-year-old
son of E Dubai is advertised at $12,500,
Gulfstream Park introduced an incentive

program in which Florida breeders will
receive $5,000 toward paying the fee, bringing his rate down to $7,500 for those planning to foal the mare in the Sunshine State.
“Obviously, Frank’s the common denominator between both enterprises, but the
Gulfstream Park brass were looking for
the opportunity to show their commitment
to Florida, and these local programs begin
with stallions,” Brothers said. “We wanted
to come in with a big splash, and to Gulfstream Park’s credit, they came up with
the formula where they participate in the
fee. He was well received in Kentucky his
first year at $15,000, so obviously the $5,000
stipend really has motivated people to take
advantage of him being [in Florida].”
Capo Bastone, a 5-year-old son of Street
Boss, was retired in the fall after winning
3 of 17 starts for earnings of $731,756, highlighted by a win in the Grade 1 King’s
Bishop Stakes at Saratoga in 2013. He is
out of the stakes-placed Fit to Fight mare
Fight to Love, who is the dam of five other
winners.
“He was a very precocious horse,” Brothers said. “He was Grade 1-placed twice at
2, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile,
and it doesn’t hurt that he came back at 3
to win the King’s Bishop like More Than

Ready, Hard Spun, and Tale of the Cat. A
few champion first-crop sires have won
that race, so it’s become a good barometer
for future stallions. Between his earnings
and his potential, he looked like a slam
dunk for Florida.”
The Florida branch of Adena Springs
was founded in October 1996, when Stronach bought the 453-acre Lin-Drake Farm
in Williston. A year later, he added another
553 acres, and the property has steadily
expanded from that point on.
Adena Springs South last stood stallions
in 2009, with an eight-horse roster that
included Aristocrat, Greatness, Alphabet
Soup, Milwaukee Brew, Olmodavor, Red
Bullet, Showing Up, and Wilko, who was
the farm’s highest-priced offering with a
$10,000 fee. Preakness Stakes winner Red
Bullet stood at the farm for as much as
$30,000 in the mid-2000s.
After the closure was announced, the
bulk of the roster was moved to Adena
Springs’s Kentucky farm or Gardiner
Farms in Ontario, later relocating to
Adena Springs North in Aurora, Ontario.
The farm’s breakout star was Macho
Uno, who entered stud at Adena Springs
South in 2004 and was relocated to the
Kentucky farm in 2008. He was joined in
the Adena Springs Kentucky stud barn
by his Breeders’ Cup Classic-winning son,
Mucho Macho Man, seven years later.
Other residents of the Adena Springs
South stallion barn during its 13 years of
operation included Indy King, Running
Stag, Lucky Lionel, Lite the Fuse, Birdonthewire, Friendly Lover, Demaloot
Demashoot, Explosive Red, and Wild Gold.
Brothers said Adena Springs could see
future expansion of its Florida breeding
operation if Stronach finds the right stallion to house in Williston.
In the meantime, Powell said the partnership between Stronach’s racing and
breeding programs will see growing dividends for Florida as runners by the quartet
of stallions at Adena Springs South begin
showing up at the state’s racetracks.
“We run an awful lot of Florida-breds at
Gulfstream Park,” Powell said. “Roughly
60 percent of the winners at Gulfstream
are Florida-breds, so a strong breeding
industry, which is based primarily here
in Ocala, combined with a strong racing
industry in the Miami and Tampa areas,
just fuel each other.
“Ultimately, these foals over time should
be bolstering the field sizes and quality of
racing at both Gulfstream and Tampa,” he
added. “I think that’s part of the master
plan, and you can’t do it unless you have
people take the bold step and get engaged
like they are.”

The death of perennial leading Florida
sire Wildcat Heir in January left a vacancy
at the top of the state’s sire list, and the spot
has been ably filled by With Distinction.
The 14-year-old son of Storm Cat’s ascension to the top of Florida’s returning sire
list had been a few years in the making.
Perennially one of the state’s leading
sires of juveniles, With Distinction finished
second in 2013 by general progeny earnings
among living resident Florida stallions and
ranked third by turf earnings. A year later,
Wildcat Heir’s death helped bump With
Distinction to first in both categories.
With Distinction stands at Hartley/De
Renzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala, Fla., for an
advertised fee of $7,500.
“Sometimes, stallions can be one-flash
wonders, but that’s not his case,” said
Gayle Frasier, stallion and sales coordinator for Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds.
“The shareholders are very supportive of
him, and the only ones we’ve lost since I’ve
been here are the ones that have retired
out of the business completely. Everyone
else has stayed in and supported him with
mares every year.
“Year after year, he produces nice foals
that are able to be precocious,” Frasier
added. “I’ve never had anybody call me up
and say, ‘I just had the ugliest With Distinction you ever saw.’ ”
With Distinction was represented by 191
starters in 2014, with 112 winners and total
progeny earnings of $4,455,964.
His three North American stakes
winners were led by Distinctiv Passion,
who won the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes
at Santa Anita and was second in the
Katella Stakes at Los Alamitos.
However, With Distinction’s highest
earner of the year was Decisive Moment,

sire’s all-time money earner with a win in
the Presque Isle Mile Stakes and runnerup finishes in the Memorial Handicap at
Calder Race Course and the Eight Miles
East Stakes at Gulfstream Park, increasing his lifetime earnings to $926,783.
With Distinction also was represented by
Merit Man, the winner of the Green Flash
Handicap at Del Mar. Internationally, the
stallion’s runners included Nobody Catch
Me, a stakes winner in Korea.
With Distinction was second or better
among Florida’s resident sires by juvenile
earnings from 2011 to 2013, and his crop
of 2-year-olds was led in 2014 by Charlie’s
Brother, who hit the board in a pair of
stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, finishing
second in the Inaugural Stakes and third
in the Pasco Stakes.
Also of note, With Distinction sired North
America’s winningest female runner of
2014, Courtney Ryan. The now-6-yearold mare won 10 of 16 starts on the south
Florida circuit, putting her one win behind
overall leader Handsup Moneydown.
“They’re precocious as 2-year-olds,
but they also have great staying ability,”
Frasier said about With Distinction’s foals.

the Florida Derby. He’s his first son to go to
stud. He’s standing out in California this
year [at Lovacres Ranch], so it’s nice that
he can have sons that are good enough to
go to stud.”
With Distinction won 6 of 29 career
starts during his career for earnings of
$447,717, including a win in the Grade 3
El Conejo Handicap at Santa Anita. After
winning the 5 1/2-furlong El Conejo, With
Distinction stretched out to 1 1/8 miles to
finish second in the Grade 2 San Antonio
Handicap and was runner-up in the sevenfurlong, Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap. He also was runner-up in the Grade 3
Maryland Breeders’ Cup Handicap at six
furlongs.
Bred in Kentucky by William S. Farish
Jr., With Distinction is out of the unraced
Alydar mare Extravagant Woman, who is
the dam of seven winners from nine foals
to race. He is a half-brother to Grade 2
winner Living Vicariously and multiple
Grade 1-placed Resort, who is the dam of
Grade 2 winner Sightseeing.
With Distinction’s second dam is Grade
1 winner Squander, who is the pivot point
for a family that also includes multiple
Grade 1 winners Val’s Prince and Goodbye Halo and Japanese Group 1 winner
King Halo.

Change is in the air in the Florida
market, and Kantharos could be among
the young stallions poised to benefit.
The unbeaten Kantharos, who is
currently based at Ocala Stud, finished
2014 as Florida’s leading freshman sire,
with 18 winners from 31 starters for total
progeny earnings of $868,968. That bankroll far outpaced Journeyman Stud-based
freshman sire Cool Coal Man, whose nine
winners from 30 starters earned $317,639.
No other Florida first-year stallion had
more than four starters.
With a changing of the guard looming
in Florida following the death of state stalwart Wildcat Heir in January, Kantharos,
a 7-year-old son of Lion Heart, also will
be the leading returning juvenile sire in
the state. Wildcat Heir – first or second
in Florida’s general sire standings every
year since 2010 – finished atop the juvenile
list by earnings in 2014, with his progeny
banking $897,331 to edge Kantharos.
Kantharos’s top runner in 2014 was Mr.
Jordan, who, in the style of his sire, won
all three of his starts by open lengths.
That included a pair of stakes at Gulfstream Park West, where he won the Juvenile Sprint Stakes by three lengths before
taking the Smooth Air Stakes by 4 1/2
lengths.
Mr. Jordan was knocked off the classics trail when he sustained a check ligament injury in a workout in December. He
underwent surgery and rejoined trainer
Eddie Plesa’s string in February.
Kantharos also is represented by the
consistent X Y Jet, who has been on the
board in 7 of 8 career starts. The colt
concluded his juvenile campaign by
finishing second in the Pasco Stakes at
Tampa Bay Downs, then stepped up to

Kantharos is also the sire of the stakesplaced winners Savingtime, Katie’s Kiss,
Bucchero, Brother Bobo, Duke of Luke,
and Big Yum.
Kantharos, trained by Steve Asmussen, won his three starts as a juvenile by
a combined 28 1/2 lengths in 2010. He won
his debut by 11 3/4 lengths, the Grade 3
Bashford Manor Stakes by 9 1/2 lengths,
and the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes
by 7 1/4 lengths. However, while training
for the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes, he fractured sesamoids in his left foreleg while
galloping out after a workout and was
forced into retirement.
Kantharos initially stood at Vinery in
Summerfield, Fla., for the 2011 season.
However, with Vinery owner Tom Simon
selling his U.S. operations, the young
stallion relocated to Ocala Stud for 2013.
The Vinery Florida property was eventually purchased by Barbara Banke’s

Changes continue in the Florida landscape as Kantharos establishes himself
as a state standout. In mid-February, the
Ocala City Council approved a plan to
develop Ocala Stud and neighboring Red
Oak Farm into a roughly 400-acre residential and commercial area called Trinity
Lane. Developer John Brunetti, owner of
Hialeah Park, owns both properties. No
plans have been announced for the Ocala
Stud operation. The farm currently stands
eight stallions and has not throttled back,
adding Canadian champion and classic
winner Uncaptured, another son of Lion
Heart, for 2015.
Brunetti told local media in February
that construction at Ocala Stud is far
down the road, with the Trinity Lane project expected to be complete in no fewer
than 20 years. Indeed, the project got a
roadblock Feb. 26, when Ocala mayor Kent
Guinn vetoed the zoning ordinances that
paved the way for the development – the
second time the mayor has used his veto
power to stop the project.

Although Florida sire Notebook
has been gone for more than a decade,
his influence continues to burn in the
Sunshine State.
The former Ocala Stud sire who died in
2003 led the Florida broodmare sire list
for 2014, marking the seventh consecutive year he has been first or second on
that list. The son of Well Decorated again
edged two familiar rivals, Montbrook
and Marquetry, to lead the category.
The consistent Notebook was represented by 104 winners, including two
stakes winners, out of his daughters
in 2014, for total progeny earnings of
$3,856,158. That was enough to edge
fellow former Ocala Stud stallion Montbrook, who was pensioned and died in
2013, with $3,682,230. Montbrook’s daughters were represented by 79 winners last
year, including multiple Grade 1 winner
and Eclipse Award finalist Stopchargingmaria.
Just behind in third was Marquetry, the broodmare sire of female turf
standout Discreet Marq, with a bankroll of $3,656,469. The stallion, who most
recently stood at Stonewall Farm Ocala,
was pensioned in 2010 and died in 2013.
The broodmare sire list for 2014 looked
quite similar to 2013, when Marquetry led
the standings, followed by Notebook and
Montbrook. The three were separated by
just over $1 million.
The top earner in 2014 out of a daughter
of Notebook was Chrysolite, who won 3
of 10 starts and placed in two other races
while competing on the lucrative New
York Racing Association circuit. The
New York-bred daughter of Freud is out
of Halo’s Notebook, who won her only
career start.
