DIVINE MERCY PRAYER
(3:00 p.m. Daily)
Please Pray for Vocations,
and for the grace of perseverance for
all Priests and Deacons.
Without them
there are no Sacraments.
You expired, Jesus, but the source
of life gushed forth for souls, and
the ocean of mercy opened up for
the whole world.
O Fount of Life, unfathomable
Divine Mercy, envelop the whole
world and empty Yourself out
upon us.

Can you explain what a "MASS INTENTION" is?
The Holy Eucharist (The Holy Mass) is the source and summit of the Christian life.
At Mass, the MERIT won for us by Jesus' sacrifice of Himself on Calvary on Good Friday,
is brought forward in time to the present moment. This occurs because Almighty God is not bound
by historical or human chronological time in the way we are. Our eternal salvation, and
Jesus paying the price for the damage caused by our sins and those of all humanity, were what was
merited for us by Jesus Christ on Good Friday.
At every Mass a mystical “time warp” is opened, in which the one sacrifice of Jesus is miraculously brought forward in
time to be present to us in the here and now. When we are present at a Celebration of the Eucharist, the Holy Mass, we are
not merely turning our attention to the events of the past, but we are actually really and truly present at the most pivotal
moment of human history! This fact is oftentimes not fully comprehended or understood by many people.
Every single time the Mass is Celebrated, the One Sacrifice of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Calvary, is made
present to us in an unbloody manner; affording to us an infinite amount of sanctifying-grace and it's merit. It is THIS
GRACE, THIS MERIT which is THE INTENTION; being applied to the per son or per sons, living or deceased, for
whom the particular Mass is being Offered.
"In loving Memory", while being a beautiful sentiment expressed by family or friends, is not an Intention. Of course
anyone who has a Mass Offered for a family member or friend is doing so with great love, which is presumed; this is a
wonderful and noble act. Having a Mass Offered for the Intentions of someone living really is the greatest gift a Christian
can give too!
Many Saints, including the modern era St. Padre Pio, often said "the Merit of one Mass Offered for someone living is
worth 100 after they are dead." Why? Because the Grace and Merit Intention helps us become more like Christ while we
still have the ability in life to change for the better!
At the moment of death our Wills are set. Having a Mass Offered for a deceased family member or friend is a very
powerful gift to them, since the souls of the deceased can no longer merit for themselves; they depend on us here on earth to
offer prayers, sacrifices, and Mass Intentions for the Repose of their Souls. The "Repose of the Soul" is the Intention. The
Grace and Merit of that Mass is applied for the Eternal Repose of their souls.
Every Parish is required by Canon Law, to offer at least one Sunday Mass Intention for the needs of the Members of the
Parish. (Can. 534 §1). Have you noticed "For the Parishioners of St. Therese" is always listed as one of the Weekend Mass
Intentions? That Mass Intention is for all the Members of the Parish, all of the living Parishioners, each and every week.
In and through Christ’s perfect Sacrifice; made present to us at every Mass, we pray for the deceased, for those who are ill,
for those who face various difficulties, hardships, or challenges; sometimes the prayer-intent is for favorable weather,
employment etc. also.
It is important to note that the graces from every Mass are infinite and that God is not limited; more than one Intention can
be offered at a single Mass, but the priest is only permitted to be given the equivalent of one offering-stipend for a single
Mass. Any additional stipends go to charitable causes and needs, Missionary priests, etc.
All of us, the Faithful present at Mass, each bring our own personal intentions and concerns and prayers to every Mass.
Everyone in the church has something on their mind and heart, which they each privately bring and place upon the altar
spiritually. Always remember that Almighty God is never ever outdone in His gifts of mercy and love to us all.
In order to help us keep this in mind, note the wording used in the list of Mass Intentions for a given Week. The
INTENTION is either: For the Repose of the Soul of: or, For the Special Intentions of: (if the person is living, or if it's for a
specific need such as health and healing, etc.) This is a precise way of wording it.
Many Parishes for example, if you look at the Sunday Bulletins, only put something like: (+Maria Bacciagalupe, by Fred
and Wilma Jones) to indicate that the Mass Intention is for someone deceased, along with the name of the person who
arranged for the Mass. While this is all that is required by Church Law in the Publication of the Intentions, we think it's
nicer to add "For the Repose of the Soul", etc.
Hopefully this has helped to explain the very sublime and spiritual meaning and benefit obtained through Mass Intentions,
and helped us understand better just what an amazing, awe-inspiring, and wonderful Gift it is that God allows us, in the here
and now, to be able to participate in... that one Eternal Offering of Jesus Christ to the Father in Heaven.
