full-time physicians. It is currently understaffed
with only 2 full-time physicians: Dr. Annabella

Front Desk at J.E. Stokes Medical Centre
The Family Health Team's mission is to increase the level of collaborative patient care and
improve the management of health and social well being of persons in our communities. The
NSFHT aims to provide ongoing health promotions and illness strategies in coordination with
other health care services.
The team recently developed the provincially recognized "Passport to Health" booklet, which is a
medical journal for patients to keep updated with their pertinent medical information. The team
has designated health assessment days that patients may have one-to-one consultations with the
Nurse or Nurse Practitioner to focus on what health risks they may have and what preventative
measures they may take to better their health. It is anticipated that this service will be an
effective health promotion and disease prevention tool for patients in the region.
AGUASABON MEDICAL CENTRE AND J.E. STOKES MEDICAL CENTRE
One of the Aguasabon Medical Centre Exam Rooms
The Aguasabon Medical Centre is located within McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay and the
J.E. Stoke Medical Centre is located in Schreiber on Scotia Street. Both clinics are fully
computerized with Electronic Medical Records and PACS (imaging). There is also access to the
regional hospital database including imaging, specialist consultations, and other investigations.

Laboratory Services
View from A Hospital Patient Room!
Ultrasound Services
Both clinics have friendly, professional administrative staff and 2 to 3 exam rooms per physician.
When on-call, physicians enjoy home-based call that is usually quiet. Excellent triage and
nursing staff allow most issues to be addressed over the phone. Regular office hours for the
clinics are from 9:00am-4:00pm Monday to Thursday and 9:00am-Noon on Friday.
LOCUMS
Locums are always welcome and interested physicians should contact either clinic to establish a
date that is accommodating. Locums are provided access to a furnished apartment and a liaison
from the family health team or hospital will serve as a resource person. The locum per diem is
$800 a day plus RIO premium with travel and accommodation costs reimbursed. Regular office
hours are followed and locums are provided as much on-call time as desired. The volume of
patients seen in the clinics varies, but is generally from 15-20 patients a day.
THUNDER BAY REGIONAL HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is a
state-of-the-art acute care facility serving the healthcare
needs of people living in Thunder Bay and Northwestern
Ontario. There are 375 acute care beds. Diagnostic
Imaging uses Picture Archival Computer Systems to
record the images from the MRI, 16 and 10 slice CT
Scanners and simulators, and other DI equipment which
permits easy transportation of files among radiologists
and specialists anywhere so they may view and assess
images. The ability to store and move the data of a
patient from an Electronic Medical Record makes the region’s hospitals of Northwestern Ontario
a virtual library whereby physicians and “need to know” care providers can assist with patient
care in an instant. The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the country with
approximately 95,000 annual visits. The OR suite containing 12 theatres also includes a Highdose Brachytherapy room for special Cancer Care procedures. The 28 bed Post Anesthetic
Recovery Unit has full med gas services as does the 40 bed Day Surgery Recovery area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1.
What is the approximate salary of a family physician and what are some of the
particulars of the contract that is signed?
The physician contracts are with the Rural Northern Physician Group Agreement, which is
separate from the administration of the family health team. The annual salary of a family
physician is generally over $300,000 upon the signing of a service contract, which includes a
salary of $195,000 for primary clinic based patient care, over $105,000 for on-call coverage, and
various Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care bonuses if eligible. Physicians have no out-ofpocket overhead costs, flexible work schedules, and excellent on-call remuneration. Additional
financial incentives include the free tuition grant, the Northern incentive grant, and the
cumulative preventative care bonus.
2.
What type of assistance is there for my partner regarding employment?
A collaborative team composed of representatives from the Family Health Team, McCausland
Hospital, and the municipal governments will assist your partner throughout the job search
process in identifying and developing potential employment.
3.
What types of professional development courses are available?
A variety of professional development courses are offered throughout the region and working
groups can be established through tele- or video-conferencing. The OMA and hospital will
reimburse most expenses of continuing medical education.
4.
What will it be like when I move to Terrace Bay or Schreiber?
Healthcare administration and municipal staff will work with you to help you relocate including
identifying real estate, essential services, education and/or daycare, and community tours or
introductions. A community liaison will be assigned to answer any questions you may have and
make the transition to the Terrace Bay and Schreiber region as smooth as possible. These two
friendly communities are waiting to welcome you!
5.
Will I be the only physician available in the immediate area?
Scheduling of vacation and time off will usually provide for backup while on-call and the needs
of the physician on-call is a priority. Additionally, specialists are easily within reach at the
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
6.
What is small-town life like?
Small town life will quickly spoil you, as you will almost never experience crime, traffic, smog
or natural disasters that are common in other regions. The natural friendliness of your
neighbours and comfortable pace of life will make it so you never want to leave.

terraces, which were left behind when ice glaciers receded
about 20,000 years ago. The area is surrounded by the
rugged Northern Ontario wilderness and the forest is the
reason for Terrace Bay's existence. The Township of
Terrace Bay originated as an undeveloped area catering to
the needs of the forestry industry and progressed into a
planned community developed by the Kimberly Clark
Pulp and Paper Company on July 1, 1959. The pulp mill
has been the main economic driver of the region and
recently changed ownership to Terrace Bay Pulp Inc.
