WOW, we are on the verge of some
very exciting changes in our lives...
First of all, grandchild #7 - Emily Ruth Lear - will be arriving on
February 13th, being heartily welcomed by her parents, Kelly and Brad,
sister Mallory, along with brother
William...and assorted grandparents,
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends,
of course!
And, on a lesser note, we are planning a new look for the next issue of
the Paso Robles Magazine!
Our March 2014 keepsake issue will sprout a glossy cover, larger
photos and a cleaner updated look
throughout with the beginnings of
our special Historical Paso Robles
section appearing every month in
2014...kicking off in March as the
City of Paso Robles ‘Official’ 125th
Anniversary Publication!
That’s the Quasquicentennial
officially celebrated on March 11...
our own Chuck Desmond has been
keeping you up-to-speed on all the
City activities planned for the year,
along with 125th souvenirs you
just gotta have! Somethin’ like this
doesn’t happen very often!
Exciting stuff, we are so proud to
be recognized for this honor. The
special New Year’s Eve bash kicking
off the Quasqui festivities at the Paso
Robles Inn was outstanding, along
with the glow in the dark games in
the park and the awesome fireworks
display at midnight! Congratulations
Quasqui committee, a job well done!
Back on track, looking at the content of this issue, we have some interesting articles for you this month.
First of all, a hearty tip of the
ol’ PRM cap to Randy and Nancy
Flamm for being named Roblans of
the Year. What a special honor for
two very deserving, very involved
Roblans. Read all about ‘em on page
16. Then, follow that up with the special honor, Beautification of the Year,
bestowed on Mike Rawister for the
amazing transformation he accomplished at the Paso Robles Golf Club.
If you haven’t seen it yet...go! You’ll
be amazed at the difference.
Rawister and the Flamms were
honored during the Paso Robles
Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner, ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ Gala event
held, this year, at the Broken Earth
Winery. It was a fun evening, really a
kick to see everyone all dressed up in
period outfits of the 1920’s!
We also have Chris Weygandt Alba’s interesting piece on the sea lions
at Piedras Blanca, as the Last Word
on page 51.
There’s so very much more, and
being Valentine’s Day is this month
we have a listing of area Valentine
Celebrations, by Melissa Chavez, on
page 12, along with a special love story about the 42 year marriage of Jerry
and Gaye Perney who share a love of
music and teaching, by Judy Bedell,
on page 14.
I could wax poetic about this special time for couples but suffice to
say: Gentlemen, this is where our true
colors can shine....and we need to get
creative. Do I hear an ‘amen’?
Got it guys? Get real about this.
By the time you read this, Rhoda
will be recovering from back surgery
in late January, please keep her in your
prayers. We were married October
28, 2005 and over the years we’ve had
our ups and downs, like every couple,
along with thought-provoking discussions about our love and the loves with
our deceased spouses that were cut
short by cancers.
We celebrate our ever-evolving life
together and look forward to special
times ahead of us.
Please, fellow Roblans, don’t miss
this opportunity. Treat each day with
loved ones as the special gift it is...but
especially on Valentine’s Day.

Once the employees of IQMS learned that they
could sign the letter nominating their employers
and owners of the company, Randy and Nancy
Flamm, for the Chamber of Commerce Roblan
of the Year, the line from the lobby’s front desk
went out the door! With the recent announcement, the Flamms were overwhelmed with the
honor especially since it came from the extraordinary support from their employees. Randy says,
“We were very humbled by the announcement. It’s
amazing. We’ve been very blessed with the huge
success of our company and our people. We’re in a
very large industry. We’re big for around here, but
comparatively, we are very small. We love what we
do and we have literally hundreds of people trying
to purchase IQMS every year. We want to see how
big we can become and part of that is giving back.
We’re very profitable which makes it easy to give
back to the community.
“Our main focus is education and giving our local
kids the ability to be productive in their lives. Nancy
and I believe that what our country needs for the future starts with the kids. That’s why we are so happy
to support the youth in FFA, 4-H and Skills USA.
We love to hire them as they come off the farm or
ranch because they understand the work ethic.”
IQMS began like many other large high-tech
companies. “Nancy and I met in the Bay Area
while working for the same company in the late
70s when micro computers were just coming out.
We built the software to make our jobs easier in the
manufacturing realm.
“In 1978, I belonged to the Homebrew Computer Club where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak
got their start. Obviously, they did quite a bit better
than I did! Back then, I was using micro computers
to monitor industrial equipment.”
While working for General Electric, a conversation over dinner with clients who were dealing with
similar problems in their manufacturing company

recalls telling them, “I wrote the software that was
so great that we’d take long lunches while the software did the work! They said, “Why don’t you write
that software for us? I was very happy at GE and
politely declined, but they kept after me. I agreed
to write software for
them, but sell it too.

that project parttime in August 1988
while we were still working. The word got around so
we quit our jobs in 1989, got a second mortgage on
the house and started IQMS in our living room.
“We struggled for a while but quickly figured
out that we could live anywhere. Nancy didn’t care
for the Los Angeles area and didn’t want to move
back to the Bay Area, so we picked somewhere in
between.” In the early 80s, a business trip brought
Randy to Paso. He adds, “We had breakfast at Vic’s
Café and I said ‘This is a wonderful place! We were
in suits and ties!’ Larry Eastwood is a great guy! We
settled here in 1993 and bought a small ranch near
Lake Nacimiento. Our first office was off Vendels
Circle with only a handful of us. Now we have 120
employees here, so we’ve grown up in Paso.
“Since 2009 we’ve enjoyed a high growth rate;
in fact we’ve over doubled in size.” IQMS provides

scheduling, payroll and general ledger. Flamm
adds, “Our main clientele is automotive parts and
medical device companies. The majority of our customers are in the United States. We have offices

Mexico City, the Chicago area and expanding to
the Charlotte, North Carolina area.”
Randy and Nancy enjoy their success and personal endeavors with such a genuine spirit and a wonderful sense of humor! To further support FFA and
4-H, the Flamms participate in the Mid-State Fair

run a cattle operation with
their ranches near the lake and

pasture and the bulls appreciate the special attention...especially a carrot now and then! Randy adds,

the last 20 years. Nancy’s latest hobby is the Cambria
Pub and Steakhouse. She’s doing very well.” Naturally, Nancy uses all IQMS software for the back end

When the call for service arises, the employees of IQMS also eagerly pitch in with volunteer
hours or donations to local charities and nonprofit organizations to include AYSO, North
County Women’s Shelter, Food Bank of SLO,
Woods Humane Society, United Way and Toys
for Tots. Fundraising events for walkers, runners
and cyclists are popular; fostering the IQMS
team spirit. Several employees serve on the
Board of Directors of Skills USA and Softec.
Marketing Director Daniele Fresca proposed the
Adopt-a-Park program to Randy. She adds, “Of
course, Randy said ‘Go Big or Go Home! Let’s do
the Downtown City Park!’ With between 5 to 15
employee volunteers every other week, we pick up
trash and report any repairs.” Randy adds, “We get
paid back too. It’s such a feel good thing.”
Through their kindness and generosity, Randy
and Nancy Flamm are setting the example for our
youth, the IQMS employees and the community
at large by embracing a very simple, yet profound
belief. In Randy’s own words, “Instead of what can

Students at Georgia Brown Elementary School
are gaining knowledge on nutrition and fitness
thanks to a group of volunteers and community activists spearheaded by Laura Herzberg, a
pediatrician with Community Health Centers.
What started as an art and nutrition idea has
blossomed into what organizers hope will be an
annual event for all schools in the district.
“This started as a little idea of mine to teach
kids about nutrition and to get some posters for
my office for teaching about obesity,” Herzberg
said. “Then, I thought, it would be nice to bring
this out to all the schools in the district as
a nutrition and art project.”
Hoping to gain momentum and support,
Dr. Herzberg presented her idea to Georgia
Brown Elementary Principal Ellalina Emrich
Keller and was overwhelmed by her response.
“She said ‘This needs to be much bigger
– a month-long nutrition curriculum,” Herzberg
said.
From the two dynamos’ brainstorming session
through the completion of last year’s inaugural
program, Herzberg was “totally impressed” as
volunteers responded with excitement, embraced
the idea and became involved. Herzberg and
Keller continually receive positive feedback for
their efforts from students and parents alike.
“They especially like the take home recipe,”
Herzberg said, referring to an in-class portion
of the curriculum, “and the kids love the cooking
portion – many are still eating vegetables!”
Any program that combines kids’ artwork
with getting them to like vegetables has to be a
winner, right?
It sure seems that way and, with support from
a gaggle of volunteers, Herzberg and her team are
repeating the month-long curriculum through
the end of February. Sponsored in part by the
UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program,
it kicked off January 21 with initial lessons and
presentations.

for the students, staff and volunteers – 600 in all

Kelly Wangard, executive chef and manager at
Summerwood Winery & Inn. Cal Poly studentathletes chatted with students before heading out
to the playground for a bit of physical activity.
CalFresh representatives gave a presentation
to parents on January 29 and introduced a free
cooking class to run concurrently with the students’ program. Chef Rod Blackner, Paso Robles
Food Service and Culinary Arts Academy Director, conducted a brief seminar and offered training
for parents involved with classroom cooking
demonstrations. He brought offerings from a
full salad bar – a crowd favorite, Keller said.
Various community partners were on hand to
answer questions and offer assistance.
A week-long food group curriculum, based on
the USDA One Great Plate model, will feature a
butternut squash soup recipe. Students will take
home the recipe and a bag of ingredients so they
may cook at home with their family.
“It empowers children when they take their skills
and cook at home – it becomes a family tradition,”
Keller said, adding that all produce for demonstrations, class lessons, and take-home ingredients was
donated by local farmers. “We have amazing family
and community support that allows us to do this.”
New this year – activities presented by Kennedy
Club Fitness and video documentation courtesy of

are needed to purchase pedometers for 3-5 grade
classrooms. Additional community supporters
include: CHC, the Food Bank, and the Georgia
Brown PTSA.
As for the art portion, many Georgia Brown
students, including Dr. Herzberg’s two boys, are
patients in her office; she said they delight in seeing
their posters adorn the pediatric clinic walls. The
winning class of the poster contest will be treated
to a pizza party – Blackner will return to help
students prepare pizzas using fresh ingredients.
“This is an ambitious project, but it has been
extremely gratifying,” said Herzberg. “I have been
totally overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of volunteers and donors and the community support.”

Mrs. Gray, the eighth grade
teacher at Cappy Culver Elementary began the school year by
challenging her students to write
narrative and informative essays.
During this process she gave
her students the option to enter
the Scholastic Hunger Games:
Catching Fire Essay National
Competition.
Annabelle Tolle, one of Mrs.
Gray’s students, stepped up to the
challenge. Annabelle aspires to become an author one day and can
always be found reading and writing short stories along with being a
huge Hunger Games fan. Annabelle
won the Daughters of the American Revolution essay competition
last year.
This year, Annabelle
was one of ten runnerups in the Catching
Fire Essay Competition.
There were over 2000
entries and hers was

with a Suzanne Collins set
of books, including Hunger
Games trilogy in hardback
and also the Gregor the Underlander set of five books all

The Boys & Girls Club of North
San Luis Obispo County has appointed Todd Evenson as new board Chairman, succeeding Jeb Brown.

Robles, Todd has been a prominent
figure in the lending industry for the
last 11 years. He has earned the respect
of his clients and colleagues, as well as
the respect and admiration of his fellow
Boys & Girls Club board members.
Todd’s passion and advocacy for the
Boys & Girls Club came from his participation in the organization as a child.
Todd was elected to the board of directors of the Boys & Girls Club in North
SLO County in December of 2011.

work four 10-hour shifts which gives
them enough time off to always be
fresh and alert which is exactly what
we want when we need their help.
In a heartbeat, the team members can
sort out an incoming call and deploy
the Emergency Services Team (Fire
Department) or the police. A slug of
routine calls (not 9-1-1 variety) also
come to them so they direct the request or situation to the right department. But, make no mistake, anything that threatens life or property is

long! On average, it is just short of
100 calls per day that require “rightnow intervention and action.”
To explain a bit more, here’s what
happens when someone dials 9-1-1.
If the call is made from a land-line in
the city, the operators can tell exactly
where the call originated. That’s important if the caller was unable to speak or give
the location. That same emergency call made
on a cell-phone, however, doesn’t provide
a physical location of the call’s origin. Cellphone 9-1-1 calls go to the CHP which then
dispatches whatever is necessary. This could
mean the CHP calls the fire or the police
departments and that time lost could make
a difference. This alone is an excellent reason
to hang on to the land line. Outside the city
limits, land-line phone calls go to the Sheriff ’s
Department, which then dispatches whatever
is needed based on the caller’s location.
With 30,000 local residents and an army of
visitors and tourists every day this is fertile soil
for every kind of emergency one could imagine.
If, and only if, you need immediate help, call
9-1-1. For routine business, call 237-6464. It’s
a great team that is there to assist.

The fourteenth annual Lillian
Larsen School BUZZ Marathon
will be held on Saturday, February 15 on the Camp Roberts
Army National Guard Reservation in a long-standing partnership with the San Miguel School
District. Beginning times for the
marathon and half-marathon are
at 8:30 a.m., walkers at 6:30 a.m.,
the 5K at 8:45 a.m. and childrenunder-12 mile run at 9:30 a.m.
This is a great meditative run
through hills and meadows of the
Salinas River Valley. The course
starts at 750’, rising gently to
1250’ going out and back. There
are wildlife spectators, spectacular views, training research sites
and porta-potties every 2 miles.
Volunteers do all the work.
Packets will be available for
pickup between 3 and 6 p.m. the
day before the race at the school
gym at 1601 L Street. Packets
may be picked up the day of the
race from 6:30 a.m. until 10 minutes before starting at the Camp
Roberts gym. Camp Roberts is
two miles north of San Miguel
on Highway 101. Be sure to have
personal identifications and current license and insurance papers
for vehicles.
The name of the race is derived
from the Lillian Larsen Hornets
who benefit from proceeds of
the race. It funds the school athletic programs, which students
would not have otherwise. This
year new volleyball jerseys are
included on the list. In 201213, sport expenses totaled nearly
$11,000, with approximately
$800 paid out-of-pocket. Lillian
Larsen School is a small school
with a big heart and a history of
talented and dedicated teachers
and students.

well as coaching the teams. To
put it simply, she loves to teach,
she loves her students and works
tirelessly to improve and enrich
LEAP Advisory Board and serving as a “go-to” person for pretty
much anything at the school that
no one else knows ‘who, what,
which, when, why or how’.

The San Miguel district has
been fortunate to have teachers
of Eileen’s caliber on their staff.
The inspiration, work ethic and
energy received in the early years
will propel them through higher
education and into their working
lives. Eileen will be retiring from
San Miguel School next year but
will still be very busy even if she’s
not in a classroom. Her influence
has been felt beyond San Miguel
and legions of grateful students
are thankful.

Climate Calamity: “Call it obsession, call it fanatical...” goes Jars of
Clay’s Coffee Song, but our friends
probably call ours, addiction. They
know my wife and I cherish our together time over that magic ebony
beverage, perhaps a little too much.
Sadly though, we were too late.
When the coffee chain from the city
named for a Duwamish chief offered
free java for the month with purchase
of a branded travel mug, they sold out
right away. We hesitated too long.
No fears, my frugal wife scored
two on Ebay, for less than the coffee
store was charging. Fifty bucks for
the pair, so by January 12th, we were
in the black, so to speak. Fanatical?
Probably.
The Central Coast basked while
January snow and ice closed the
eastern US. Great Lakes and east
coast residents hunkered inside, far
from roads, knowing skating favors
boots and blades, not Mustangs and
minivans.
At the same time, Argentina and
Australia sweltered in record heat,
naturally out came the armchair
quarterbacks on both sides about
global warming.
San Luis Obispo Supervisors and
rural Paso Robles businesses and
residents must also have pondered
what the environment would throw
at them next as they met to discuss
whether to create a water district, and
whether it would do any good.
Paso Robles, like most of the Salinas Valley, continue to bake under
droughtful skies; rainfall has been
almost nonexistent as California
chalked up the driest year on record. San Luis Obispo County joins
Monterey and Santa Barbara counties now in federally-classified “extreme” drought.
The record comes as no surprise
to Salinas Valley wineries and Hwy
46 corridor residents, many of whom
have had to drill new wells, sometimes twice.
Stakeholders all agree action is
needed, even if they don’t agree on
all the details. What should be done
first? A water district seems to be the
answer. Emergency county ordinances are only a stopgap, most say. Such
a district is the permanent, sensible
water diet strategy.
How do you create one? Residents,
growers and officials were among the

a year, if all parties work together, to
form a water district, they were told.
Ever wonder how government
grows? Locally, it usually takes place
under the auspices of LAFCO, the
Local Agency Formation Commission, but a water district is something
a bit more complex. Only been one
new water district formed in the past
two decades, so legislation is also
needed.
35th District Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian has said he’d front an
appropriate bill, if and when everyone
agrees they want one. That means
having the Board of Supervisors, on
board, as well.
Quid Pro Quart? A drop here,
a quart there, water savings can add
up, if everyone works at it. Saccharine platitude? Probably, but it sums
what the board of supervisors is doing, near term, to manage meager
groundwater reserves.
When board members leisurely
ambled back into supervisor’s chambers with renewed vigor for the new
year on January 14th, they hoped to
put into motion an irrigated agriculture offset program. While the
name is fancy, goal is simple: create
a system of water credits that allows
farmers to change what they grow
without a net increase in water use,
sustainability.
For rural residents, efficiency is
also the goal, so education will be a
big part of the ag offset program.
The game plan is to have the draft
offset plan finished by March 15,
with final passage of the plan done by
October. That is the hope, but then
some of us hope for a big lottery win.
Panga Pain: One of the most
amusing, if not edifying stories of
2013 has to be the number of light
skiffs bearing drugs hitting the beaches; more than a dozen, from Montana
de Oro to San Simeon. Drug runners
seem to have found a less obtrusive
way to bring illicit drugs ashore, as
border agents get better at busting
ne’er do wells at the border. More
than two dozen suspects are in custody, some after their van went over a
cliff, miraculously without injuries.

Crisp Coast: Normally it’s rare
for wildfires to strike the Big Sur
coastline, because fog and moisture generally keep things just a big
greener. Most fires stay in remote
eastern areas. But in late December
though, a coastal wildfire torched 36
homes, including one owned by Martha Karsten, Big Sur Volunteer Fire
Brigade’s own Chief.
The Pfeiffer Fire burned for five
days, blackening more than 900 acres
of mostly private land. The cause is yet
undetermined, but the blaze is known
to have started somewhere in the Los
Padres National Forest.
Sunny but Homeless: Dry
warm winter weather has spared the
county’s growing homeless population. No gloating though; a new
Housing and Urban Development
report says 90% of our local homeless
sleep unsheltered. The annual Home-
less Assessment Report heralds San
Luis Obispo County with the dubious rank of third in the nation among
smaller cities whose homeless sleep
outdoors.
Only two places have a higher percent of unsheltered homeless and both
are in semi-tropical Florida. Grouped
with larger cities, San Luis Obispo
County has the highest percentage of
unsheltered homeless in the nation,
according to the HUD report.
It’s a problem that all the free coffee in the world won’t help.
