The Enford and Chisenbury golf day out will be at the Upavon Golf Course on Friday 17th June 2011. Assemble at 12.00pm for a Tee Off
at 12.30pm. The intention is for a maximum of 7 teams of 4 players to play the 18 holes.
Costs. The cost of the afternoon will hopefully be £25 (for a sandwich, green fee and prizes). Any money remaining will be donated to the

THE GREAT STONES WAY PROJECT
The following is a letter from Ian Ritchie of The Great Stones Way Project sent in by Norman Beardsley
Dear all
I am overdue in giving you an update on our Great Stones Way project and the planned walk on the 26th March.
We are making good progress on a number of fronts but are facing a few issues that will delay the formal opening of the full
route. On the positive side we have been granted £24750 by Plain Action and a grant of £5000 from the Tidworth Area Board. So
far we have raised over £10000 from our members with more to come. The line of the southern half of the trail (from the A342 to
Stonehenge) is more or less fixed (although I need to meet Simon Banton again for his advice around Figheldean). There is huge
enthusiasm for the route from the general public, The Ramblers and the specialist walking and tourism media. We have had good
coverage in the local press and on local radio and TV. Wiltshire Council have given their provisional support but .....
.... there has been some resistance from villages in the Vale of Pewsey and from Avebury. All agree that the GSW is a good idea
and support it ‘in principle’ but I think it is fair to say that each wants it to go through the next village and not theirs! In addition
we have been asked by the World Heritage Site management, the National Trust and others to conduct an Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) on the route before we finalise it. We are agreeing to conduct an EIA, and in addition to set up an advisory
group and to develop management plans for each section of the trail. All this will take time and therefore we will not be opening
the GSW as early as we had hoped. However I am confident that all we are facing is a small delay. We are only proposing using
existing Rights of Way and could have gone ahead without the extensive consultation we are doing. By being open and inclusive
in our approach we have made more work for ourselves, but so be it. When the GSW opens we will have done all we can to ensure
that we have taken into account the views of as many interested parties as possible.
On another positive note, I am very pleased to tell you that we are still going ahead with a walk through your area on Saturday
26th March. The walk will be 14 miles long, from Casterley Camp to Stonehenge, with a shorter option from Netheravon. We will
probably be calling it the Plain and Avon Valley walk and it will be to raise funds for the GSW. We are going to be encouraging our
members to take part but it will be open to anyone who wishes to join us. We envisage walkers starting from Casterley between
10am and 11am. We will be providing a shuttle bus for them to get back to their cars and we will have porta-loos at Casterley
and at the car park near the Durrington golf driving range. We will be encouraging walkers to use the pubs and shops in the
Avon Valley for refreshments. Would any villages be prepared to open the toilets in your village halls or churches for walkers to
use? Are there any things you would like to suggest we should include in the information for walkers?

ALL SAINTS PRIMARY SCHOOL NETHERAVON
NEWS RELEASE – FEBRUARY 2011
All Saints Primary School in Netheravon are holding a double celebration with an excellent Ofsted Report which rates the school as
‘Good’ with features of ‘outstanding’ teaching practice and a brand new extension to the popular school.
Mrs Hayley Humphris, Head Teacher, who was delighted to share the report with parents said: “The good progress made since the last
Ofsted inspection two and a half years ago has been recognised and the school has the capacity to become ‘Outstanding’.”
Inspectors recognised the school provides a well-organised, safe and secure environment where “first rate induction arrangements” help
new arrivals settle quickly into the school’s welcoming setting. A very happy parent commented: “Really impressed by the way the school
has met our child’s needs.” endorsing Ofsted’s belief that “Children feel safe, secure and grow in confidence.” Parents are also impressed with the school’s caring ethos, with all who returned the questionnaires being happy with their children’s experience at school.
They are particularly pleased with the children’s safety in the school, their sense of enjoyment, the quality of teaching, how well their
children’s needs are met and the leadership and management of this Netheravon School.
The Inspectors may well have been impressed with the new extension, which provides two extra classrooms complete with interactive
whiteboards and also incorporates an upgrade to the pupil toilet block including a completely renovated separate accessible toilet. The
extra space has enabled the ambitious school to provide a dedicated music and library facility for the many visiting instrumentalists to
use when teaching the children saxophone, guitar, recorder and piano. The school is delighted to have secured funding to add another
classroom with additional toilet facilities to its main building. The final part of this exciting development will begin in June 2011.
Such ambitious plans have brought the school to the attention of new MP Claire Perry last year, who singled out All Saints for her
Christmas card competition which resulted in six of the pupils being invited to meet Mrs Perry and the Chancellor of the Exchequer,
George Osborne, MP, on a visit to the Houses of Parliament and 11 Downing Street. Families of the winners and two teachers from the
School made the trip to London and enjoyed a fascinating insight into the history of the Houses of Commons and Lords and were privileged to then walk to Downing Street via a special tunnel under the capital’s streets and be given a guided tour of 10 and 11 Downing
Street by the Chancellor and his staff. As a rule, there are usually no photographs taken of the inside of No. 11, but as the Christmas
tree in the Chancellor’s office had been donated by the Devizes Constituency and actually came from Rushall, near Netheravon, the visitors were allowed to take a picture of themselves with Mr Osborne by the Christmas tree.
Mrs Karen Lampard, a teacher and mother of one of the winners said: “It was the most marvellous experience of a lifetime.” Mr Ross
Nashwalder also a teacher, called the day “fascinating” and “a real privilege” for which he’d like to thank Claire Perry, her staff and of
course the Chancellor of the Exchequer for giving up so much of their time and making the visit so memorable for all the children.

ENFORD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH (NHW)
The Enford NHW has gradually unwound in recent years. I have decided that the
simplest recovery plan is to start again with a blank sheet of paper. So, if you would
like to play an extra role in the community, then why not become a NHW coordinator!
Past or present co-ordinators are very welcome to re-apply. Tour of duty will be for
one year, at the end of which you can either re-apply or stand down.
What’s NHW All About? It’s basically about encouraging people in the community to
keep an eye out for each other. That means keeping an eye on each others’ property
when someone is away from home, keeping tabs on any strangers. Looking out for the
elderly. Getting to know the young people. With our regular police increasingly thin
on the ground, it makes sense to have a backup network in place.
What Do I Need In Order To Be A Coordinator? Most importantly, the ability to
talk to people. A telephone and Email is also pretty much essential these days. If you
tend to be in and around the village during the daytime, then so much the better.
What Sort of Area Does A Coordinator Look After I have divided the parish up into
18 NHW schemes (see list below). Some of these contain only a couple of households,
some (eg. Grants Road) are quite large and may need to be split again.

email me at [email protected] . At this stage I just need your name, address and telephone number and an indication of which area you are volunteering to
look after.

BROADBAND IN ENFORD
Further to last month’s report. I received a follow-on letter from Claire Perry MP, enclosing a copy of an email from BT’s ‘High
Level Complaints’ office, in response to my specific questions (below):
... I’d be grateful if you could advise .... what if any obligations do BT have towards the community:
Do they have any obligations to deliver a minimum broadband infrastructure – if so, what is it?
Where there are insufficient lines to meet the community’s needs, do they have any obligation to lay more without
passing on the cost to the community?
The gist of their reply is as follows:
We have tested Mr Becker’s line, as a benchmark for the village, and it is working beyond expectations.
We haven’t tested any other lines in the locality, however we recommend that everyone checks their home equipment and
wiring.
There are no upgrades planned for the network feeding Enford. The published schedule is at
http://www.openreach-communications.co.uk/superfast/where-and-when/
Netheravon does not feature in the roll-out schedule for super-fast broadband. Needless to point out to you, BT have not answered the questions I raised. They also appear to work on the assumption that, if one house in the village is getting satisfactory broadband, then any shortcomings elsewhere in the village must be due to faulty home equipment and wiring – so not their
concern.
If this is the quality of response from ‘High Level Complaints’, I’m grateful we don’t have to deal with the ‘Low Level Complaints’
office! Anyhow, I’ll persevere and let you know if I hear anything more. If you want to tell me about your experiences, I’m at

Changes to bus services 5, 6, 16, 95 and 96
linking Salisbury, Amesbury, Larkhill, Durrington,
Upavon, Pewsey, Marlborough and Swindon
from 27th February 2011
The Wilts & Dorset bus company has informed us as part of its on-going review of all the bus services that it operates in Wiltshire, it will
be reorganising some of the services that it operates in the Amesbury, Larkhill, Durrington, Pewsey and Marlborough areas from 27th February 2011. The services affected are:

The daytime journeys on these services are almost entirely operated on a commercial basis by Wilts & Dorset, with very little funding from
Wiltshire Council and have remained largely unaltered for a great many years. However during this time passenger demand has changed
and the bus company feels that it needs to revamp the services to make them easier to understand and to more closely meet the needs of
current and future passengers.
They have therefore decided to combine all of these services into one new service numbered X5, which during the daytime on weekdays
will provide a bus every 30 minutes from Salisbury to Boscombe Down, Amesbury and Durrington, then continuing once an hour either to
Larkhill, or to Netheravon, Upavon, Pewsey, Marlborough, Chiseldon and Swindon. Journeys will also be provided at night and on Sundays as they are at present.
A copy of the new timetable is attached and a more detailed explanation of the changes is as follows:
Changes in the Salisbury area
To provide a faster service for longer distance passenger, weekday daytime journeys on service X5 will take the direct route into and out of
Salisbury along Castle Road, rather than running along Waters Road and Stratford Road. Passengers who need to travel from the Waters
Road / Stratford Road area into the City Centre will still be able to use bus service r4, which runs every 30 minutes during the daytime
(service X5 will also serve these areas at night and on Sundays).
Changes in the Amesbury and Boscombe Down area
The route taken by new service X5 in the Amesbury area will be standardised so that all bus services run from the A345 along the new Stockport
Road, then along Underwood Drive (for Archers Gate estate), Raleigh
Crescent, Boscombe Road, Earls Court Road to Amesbury Bus Station,
then via London Road (for Tesco’s) and Bulford village to Durrington. The
X5 buses will not run along Butterfield Drive or Main Road or call at the
Camp main gate (these stops will be served by some journeys on the new
Amesbury Hopper minibus service instead).
Changes in the Durrington area
From 27th February, the entire bus service through Durrington will be provided
by new service X5.
The route taken by the X5 buses will be completely
different to the existing bus services with buses from Salisbury and Amesbury
travelling via Bulford village and Bulford Hill into Durrington, then via Bulford Road, Church Street, High Street, Meads Road and the Western end of
Larkhill Road to the Stonehenge Inn Roundabout, from where buses will proceed either to Larkhill or Pewsey/Swindon.
This will give Durrington a public transport link with Bulford, Solstice Park
and Tesco’s, but means that buses will no-longer run along Stonehenge Road,
Pinckneys Way, Coronation Road, Poores Road or Avondown Rd. However,
residents from these areas should not have too far to walk to alternative the bus
stops on the X5 route.
Changes in the Larkhill and Countess areas
From 27th February, the main service to Larkhill will be provided by new service X5 which will run from Salisbury, Amesbury, Bulford
and Durrington once per hour. These buses will operate a circular route in Larkhill, picking up along The Packway, Watson Road, Willoughby Road, Bingham Road, and Alanbrooke Road.
As service X5 will only be serving Larkhill once per hour, Wiltshire Council will be funding additional peak hour journeys to run direct
from Amesbury to Larkhill via the existing service 16 route, to assist people travelling to/from school or work. These buses will be

numbered 74 and a special service 615 will also be provided to transport children between Larkhill and Avon Valley College.
Service 74 will also pick up at the Countess and Strangways areas that will not be served by new service X5. Outside these times, Wiltshire Council is arranging for the Connect 2 Wiltshire shared taxi service to be extended to call at Countess and Strangways on request, to
ensure that the small number of residents that use buses from these areas are not left stranded.
Changes in the Pewsey Area
New service X5 will provide all journeys from Pewsey to Salisbury, Marlborough and Swindon and will give a much more frequent service to the Great Western Hospital. However, in Pewsey, service X5 will only call at bus stops along the main A345 road (i.e. Swan Road,
North Street and Marlborough Road) and will not run along Wilcot Road, Vale Road or Old Hospital Road.
Changes in the Marlborough Area
All journeys on new service X5 will run direct from Salisbury to Swindon via the A346, calling at Chiseldon village and the Great Western
Hospital. Buses will no longer run from Marlborough to Swindon via the A4, Avebury and Wroughton (service 96 route) – alternative bus
services are available from Avebury to Swindon every hour whilst the small number of passengers who currently catch bus service 96 from
stops along the A4, will be able to use the Connect 2 Wiltshire bus service instead.
As a result of these changes, it is likely that alterations will be made to the timetable of Stagecoach service 70 in early April, and further
details of this will be available during March.
These alterations are probably the biggest changes to be made to bus services in the Amesbury and Durrington area in over 20 years and
whilst we believe that many passengers will find the timetables to be an improvement, inevitably there may be a few people who find
themselves worse off as a result. We have therefore been liaising with Wilts & Dorset to try and minimise any disruption that may be
caused by the changes, but if you become aware of any groups of passengers who experience significant problems as a result of the new
arrangements, please let us know and we will see if we can find a solution.

HIGHWAY NEWS.
Hello Enford Parish Residents. It was last October 2010 that I last gave you a report. Herewith an updated report on Highways.
The A345 Road Surface from Enford through to Netheravon
The road surface work has now been completed and the work carried out is holding up to the past icy weather conditions, we
trust you now have a comfortable ride through the area and that it is a bit quieter for those residents living along the route.
Speeding and Enforcement
With the removal of the Police and their equipment from the rural roads, its no great surprise that more road accidents are occurring and that deaths and serious injuries are taking place. There have been 7 deaths on Wiltshire’s rural roads in the last 4
months to our records.
Enford Community Speed Watch
Come this August it will be the third anniversary of Enford Parish carrying out the scheme here on the A345. It has been observed by the team that speed is increasing through the area and we are now experiencing speeds through the 30mph zone of
up to 55mph. It has also been noted that drivers are now treating our watch with contempt and there appears to be an
ignorance of the 30mph speed limit by many drivers.
The Swan Accident (May 2008)
A letter will shortly be prepared for onward transmission to the police complaints commission regarding this accident and the
way the police dealt with it.
The C32, Coombe/Enford/Littlecott/East Chisenbury
As I stated in my last report to you (Oct 2010), the C32 is going to experience a lot of walkers this year because of the “Pewsey
Avon Trail” “The Great Stones Way” and the” Living River Avon”. All these visitor walking routes start in earnest this year and
we also have the “Sustrans” cycle route 45 through the areas of the C32. Whilst carrying out Community Speed watch at Enford Hill on the 19/2/11, a resident from Littlecott questioned us, as to why nothing is done about speeding along the C32. I
have to point out here, that the C32 has two 30mph speed restriction zones. Enford and East Chisenbury. All other areas of the
C32 have the national speed limit or 60mph. The Parish Council has made many requests and representations to Wiltshire
County Council/Wiltshire Council the Wiltshire Police and the Department for Transport regarding this dangerous speed limit
for a single track rural village connection lane. We have twice applied to operate Community Speed watch in the Long Street
area and have been refused by the Council and the Police. I would advise all those residents who live along the C32 and are
concerned about this road safety issue to write to Wiltshire Councillor for Highways Cllr Dick Tonge at Wiltshire Council County
Hall, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, BA14 8JD copied to The Hon Claire Perry (MP) for Devizes, Members Room House of Commons, London SW1A OAA putting your views across as to what we all know is occurring on the C32 regarding the speeding
motor vehicles. Enford Parish Council has made many attempts to resolve the speeding problem and will again on the anniversary of the “Metro Loop” apply for another speed count. You may all wish to know that in the coming future a Speed Limit Review is planned for “C” class roads. You can be assured that the C32 will be top of the list for assessment when this review
takes place and that your Parish Council will be at the front of the queue and we will be looking for your support.
The A345 Heavy Goods Vehicles using the road as a “Through Route”
The A338/A346/A345 Working Group Team led by Wiltshire Councillor Charles Howerd is making progress of depriming the
A338 and HGV restrictions for the A345. A DfT Road Network Policy Consultation (Questions) is taking place at present .

Grit Bins.
We are still awaiting the extra grit bin for the middle of Water Lane. This bin was granted to us by the Tidworth Area Board in
Nov 2010. An investigation is ensuring about the non appearance of this bin?
Enford Hill River Avon Bridge. (New Bridge Replacement).
Wiltshire Council intend to close Enford Hill whilst the old bridge is removed and a new one is fitted. The work will commence in
May 2012 and the work will take 24 weeks. During this closure a footbridge will be installed for walkers. The road closure will
be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on 2/3/11.

2011 Calendars

Thank you to all of you who have been persuaded to buy an
Enford Camera Club 2011 Calendar.
This was the first year that we have published a calendar and
we managed to sell nearly 70 copies!
The main reason for publishing the calendar was to give Enford Camera Club, the Village and Salisbury Plain a bit of
publicity. We feel we had great success in doing this and we
understand that the calendars can now be seen in places such
as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the USA and the Falkland
Islands – as well as here in Enford.
The cost of printing the calendars meant that we didn’t make
much profit for the camera club (approx £35), but we feel more
than happy just to show off our photographic skills!
Enford Camera Club meet on the first Thursday of every
month at 8.00pm in Enford Village Hall. Please do come along,
whether you are a beginner or enthusiast.

LOCAL POLICING
There has been a deception burglary near Ludgershall. Two men posed as scrap-metal collectors, and while one kept the victim
talking, the other went through belongings and stole cash. Please be ever vigilant for this type of offender, and keep an eye on
unsolicited visitors to neighbours.
The National Crime Map is now a reality for those with internet access, go through www.police.uk, and select the village of your
choice.
There have been reports of thefts of dogs from the Salisbury Plain area, two were taken from Collingbourne Ducis. The team target dog walkers operating from a car and van, the car driver engages the dog walker in conversation, distracting him or her long
enough for the others to put the dog in the van and drive off.
Crimes have included theft of heating oil from a domestic tank, attempt theft from a motor vehicle, and hare coursers seen on the
Plain.

News from Pewsey Children’s Centre
The new Pewsey Children’s Centre is now open! This purpose built building is on the same site as Pewsey Primary and Secondary School, and shares the building with Puddleducks Nursery and is open to all families in the Pewsey Community Area with
children aged 0-5years. The centre is open between 8am-6pm, and parents are welcome to call in any time between 9.00 and
4.30pm, when staff are available to provide help and support for any queries. At certain times, parents can visit our Drop In,
which is an ‘open door’ session where the activity room and resources are available for parents/carers and children to use,
with no organised activity. The activity room will also be used to run specific sessions, and the Children’s Centre will continue
with the usual activities taken out to the surrounding villages. Curious Creation is a weekly session on Thursday afternoons
from 1.30-2.30 at the old Upavon School and is an hour of messy play.
Parents/carers are welcome to visit any of our activities, or to call into the Centre to have a look around, and to find out the
full programme of activities. The newsletter is also available to pick up from the Information Shop in Pewsey.

HOW LOW WILL SOME PEOPLE STOOP

At the beginning of February 2011 it was brought to my attention by a local resident that a small brass plaque attached to
the wall along side the Fyfield/Coombe footpath had disappeared. Four securing screws had been removed, and the
wooden backing plate is now all that remains.
This plaque was erected several years ago in memory of Police
Sergeant Crouch, who in 1913 was shot and killed on that
footpath by one of his Constables. The Constable then took his
own life by turning the gun on himself.
Whether taken as a trophy, or as a bit of brass to add a little
weight to a collection of scrap metal, I do wonder if the
offender(s) are proud of their thoughtless actions.
It would be nice to see it returned.

Dear Friends,
Easter is very late this year on 24th April. Lent does not begin until Ash Wednesday on 9th March when we will be holding a service of Holy Communion at 10am in Bulford and another communion service at 7pm in Durrington. As has been the custom in
the church for hundreds of years, the ashes of the previous year’s Palm Crosses mark each member’s forehead with the sign of the
cross. It is a solemn occasion reminding us of our frailty and our obedience to God. All are welcome.
Throughout Lent we will be holding Lent Lunches (see list below for details). These are simple occasions – a bowl of soup, bread
and fruit – but they remind us of our privileged place in this country compared with two thirds of the world that remain short of
food. The proceeds will go to the Salisbury Hospice and the Church in the Sudan. We gave away £500 last year – let’s try and
beat that.
On 3rd April we will be holding a Mothering Sunday service in Netheravon Church, followed by cakes and drinks – do encourage
as many family and friends as possible to come. At 4.15pm on the same day we will hold our Annual Parochial Meeting in the
church. This will give us all a chance to catch up with news of our churches. Fittleton’s APCM is on 10th March at 7.30pm in the
church.
The churches of Enford, Fittleton and Netheravon are always looking for bellringers – do get in touch with Allan Cook if you are

We also try to gather together an ad hoc choir twice a month with a rehearsal. If you are interested do give Pip Symonds a ring on
01980 670782 – she would be glad to hear from you. You do not need to be an expert singer !
The buildings are beautiful and in order to protect them we all need to be vigilant. If you have never been inside, do drop in and
receive a few minutes of peace.

NEWSFLASH

TRAINING ON SPTA
March will see high levels of activity across all areas of Salisbury Plain. Exercise WESSEX THUNDER, which starts on 26 February and runs through to 6 March, will involve up to 1000 troops and 150 wheeled and tracked vehicles plus helicopters. Activity will peak in the weeks 14 – 18 March and 21 – 25 March when seven major armoured exercises will be conducted across the
whole Plain. Land Warfare Centre’s Exercise SABRES THRUST involving 20 Challenger 2 tanks and 14 Warrior armoured infantry vehicles will be joined by a 3 YORKS armoured infantry company with 14 Warrior, the Household Cavalry Regiment with 48
CVRT light tanks, an armoured engineer squadron from 26 Engineer Regiment and a squadron of 14 Challenger 2 tanks from
the Royal Dragoon Guards. Main road tank crossing points will be busy, and if the weather is wet, drivers should approach
these crossings with caution as there is likely to be mud on the road being cleared by sweepers. With this unusually heavy
density of armoured vehicles extra care should be taken by drivers, horse riders and pedestrians using the permissive tracks
and public rights of way on SPTA. Finally from 28 March to 1 April LIONS STRIKE, the largest armoured exercise conducted on
the Plain will deploy moving West to East and back again during the week. This will be accompanied by higher than usual levels
of helicopter and fast jet activity some at low level. Coinciding with this exercise will be live firing involving 105 mm Light Guns
and AS90 155mm tracked guns as part of the Royal School of Artillery Young Officers Course final exercise.
FIRING NOISE
The main source of noise complaints is the live firing of 155mm AS90 (Artillery System of the 90s) self propelled guns. The firing is closely managed to ensure that legal noise limits are not exceeded and disturbance is minimised. Although some may
find the noise intrusive, it is well below legal limits.

Access to Salisbury Plain is regulated by Salisbury Plain Military Lands Byelaws and Bulford, Larkhill and Imber Range Byelaws. This Newsletter is published up to 6 weeks before the event and urgent training bids may come in subsequently. Always
comply with local signs and flags.

Bulford Ranges. A number of public rights of way (PROW) run through Bulford Ranges and are closed when firing is taking place
and red flags are flying. No firing is planned for 5th, 6th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th

Larkhill Ranges. A number of PROW run through Larkhill Ranges and are closed when firing is taking place and flags are flying.
The flags may vary in colour (red, red and yellow or red and white) but all mean “keep outside” the line of signs at that boundary.
No firing is planned for 5th, 6th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th
Note. In the event of range fires access may be denied to some areas due to the risk of unexploded ordnance “cooking off”.
Imber. Difficult terrain and unexploded military debris make it hazardous to leave the marked routes. The public are excluded
from Imber Ranges at all times, even if flags are not flying. The only exception being when the roads through Imber are opened to
allow the public to reduce journey times across Imber Ranges.
Over Easter the roads will be open from 1600hrs on Thursday 21st April to 0800 hrs Tuesday 26th April

Dogs Fouling We have no funds to provide “dog bins” . In Larger quantities faeces are hazardous waste but small amounts of
faeces can be placed in any rubbish bin if “bagged”. All we ask is that:
Dog walkers stay away from military training.
Owners pick up faeces, bag them, take them home and put them in their own bin.

Hares have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating season. Lewis Carroll is among many who have
used that in stories - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:
"The March Hare ... as this is May, it won't be raving mad - at least not so mad as it was in March."
More recently this behaviour has been questioned and it is now thought that hares behave oddly - boxing, jumping etc. - throughout their breeding season, which extends over several months.
Be that as it may; hares, especially March hares, have that reputation, which will surely stay with them.
The first record of the belief in their madness, or in this case their brainlessness, was circa 1500, in Blowbol's Test reprinted by
W. C. Hazlitt in Remains Early Popular Poetry of England, 1864:
"Thanne [th]ey begyn to swere and to stare, And be as braynles as a Marshe hare."
Of course, the phrase 'hare brained' refers to the same behaviour. This is also old and is referenced in Edward Hall's Chronicle,
1548:
"My desire is that none of you be so unadvised or harebrained as to be the occasion that ..."
The first citation that uses the phrase in a form we now know it is in 1529, in Sir Thomas More's The supplycacyon of soulys:
"As mad not as a march hare, but as a madde dogge."
The phrase has been in continuous use in the language since the 16th century.
