Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of

in need, especially those who are most
vulnerable. We believe in helping people
develop the skills and strength to move from
crisis or isolation to stability and growth. We focus on prevention when possible,
intervention when needed, and advocacy
when resources or opportunities are either
inadequate or unfair. We are guided in
this work by the richness of Catholic social
teaching.

Pope Benedict XVI’s historic visit to the United States in April 2008
renewed and affirmed the mission of Catholic Charities—to strengthen the lives of those in need by
giving help that empowers and hope that lasts.
In a private audience with Ed Orzechowski, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, and
his wife, Terry, moments prior to mass with 45,000 at Nationals Park, the Holy Father praised the
important work of Catholic Charities here, in the Archdiocese of Washington, and around the world.
In his homily, Pope Benedict urged “that those who have hope must live different lives!”
Americans must remain close to their faith, he said, which has forged the United States thus far and
must guide its principles as a global leader.
Earlier in the visit, on the south lawn of the White House, Pope Benedict expressed respect for
our “vast pluralistic society,” specifically telling the nation’s Catholics he hoped his presence would
strengthen their resolve “to contribute ever more responsibly to the life of this nation, of which they
are proud to be citizens.”
He also reminded all Americans that freedom entails personal responsibility. Remarks
on this point had profound resonance for Catholic Charities supporters and staff: “The
preservation of freedom calls for the cultivation of virtue, self-discipline, sacrifice for
the common good, and a sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate.”
Pope Benedict XVI came to the United States this spring, as he stated
midway through his homily at Nationals Park, “to be a witness to ‘Christ
Our Hope’. ” Indeed, his presence among us and his words at various
public events left Americans, Catholic and other, inspired, hopeful and
refreshed. Throughout this exciting visit, he surely reminded
us of how important it is to serve the poor, the hungry, the
homeless—and all of our neighbors who suffer.
a message
In a historic homily delivered before tens of thousands during the Papal Mass at
Nationals Stadium, his Holiness Pope Benedict XVI declared, “Those who have hope must live different
lives!” It is a compelling command, one rooted in the services and mission of Catholic Charities.
This year witnessed many incredible moments for our agency, punctuated by the visit of his Holiness.
Inspired, Catholic Charities organized the “Hunger to Hope” food drive. With more than 240 parishes and
Catholic schools as our partners, the drive gathered more than 228,000 lbs. of food for the Capitol Area
Food Bank and local pantries.
Pope Benedict’s message of hope resounded deeply, as our economy continued its decline. By June, it
was evident our economy’s woes were neither temporary nor contained to any sector. Families once safely
in the middle class found themselves behind on mortgage or rent. Rising gas and food prices compounded
their problems.
With this backdrop, there was great opportunity to rise to a formidable challenge. On the following
pages, 12 stories portray the healing power of partnership, as community and business members lent their
talents and passion to meet the needs of neighbors.
The Parish Partners Program (April), launched in January 2008, connected the grassroots work of
parishes with Catholic Charities’ resources and expertise. Our new fundraising initiative, the Building
Partnership Program (October), matched the skills of local businesses with individual programs. Many
of our partners have stood by our side for decades. The Knights of Columbus, for example, have been
stalwart defenders of the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute (September) since 1959.
We are also very pleased to report that Catholic Charities received accreditation from The Council
on Accreditation this past year. Meeting the high standards of COA, an international and independent
organization, ensures Catholic Charities employs best practices in offering services. This honor ratifies our
commitment to provide help that empowers and hope that lasts to every man, woman and child entering
our doors.
Knowing the challenges our nation faces, we are certain Catholic Charities—with partners like you—
is well positioned to meet rising demand, as more of our neighbors face desperate situations. Indeed, the
upcoming year is one of opportunity for each of us to demonstrate the compassion, humility and quiet,
reassuring love of Christ in each bed we offer, meal we serve and class we teach.
Thank you for joining us in this partnership of Help and Hope.

a message
This Annual Report is a celebration of the many

partnerships Catholic Charities Foundation has with tremendously dedicated individuals,
organizations and businesses throughout the Archdiocese of Washington. We are acutely aware
that our partners are key to the success of Catholic Charities serving over 100,000 men, women and
children each year.
Our partners recognize that together we are stronger and better equipped to share the burdens
and ease the sorrow of our less fortunate brothers and sisters. In our formative education we came to
know of the Corporal Works of Mercy. In working as partners, we in fact feed, clothe, shelter, educate
and empower those around us. When we give of ourselves we are blessed with a better understanding
of what it is to walk with Christ in the shoes of another.
This has been an unprecedented year in funding the good works of Catholic Charities. Led by the
Catholic Charities Foundation Gala in February and the Spanish Catholic Center Gala in March, nearly
$2 million was raised to support the programs of Catholic Charities. We owe a debt of gratitude to the
Catholic Charities Foundation Gala Chairs, Jim and Joan Sullivan, and the Spanish Catholic Center
Gala Chairs, Irma and Richard Frank, for their leadership and support.
The Building Partnership Program continued to sign on new partners. This program gives
businesses and their employees the opportunity to connect on a personal level with those Catholic
Charities serves by volunteering as a group and sponsoring renovations to several programs. The
work of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, Southern Management and First Potomac Realty Trust has
resulted in wonderful improvements to numerous programs. We are seeing how the improved physical
environment can have a positive impact on the delivery of services.
Of course, our partnering with each and every one of you is our most meaningful partnership.
Your time, talent and resources continue to ensure that we can help so many with such complicated
needs. As Chair of the Catholic Charities Foundation Board of Directors, and on behalf of the entire
board, I offer my deep gratitude for all that you do and pray that you continue to keep Catholic
Charities and its work on your mind as well as in your heart.

Four years ago, Kevin McConville (left) lost
his wife and mother to their four children,
Megan, to cancer. Lucky to have a strong and
loving community to comfort her during her
fight, Megan wanted to reach out to mothers
who did not have the support they needed. In
her memory, Kevin began the In the Name of
the Mother Fund. The fund helps women with
cancer who don’t have the finances or family to
uplift them. For Diana (right), the fund relieved
financial worries while she endured treatment.
Whether helping with groceries, utilities, a
mortgage payment or even a new wig, the
fund is a guardian angel to women facing
a desperate situation.

The outstanding reputation of Catholic Charities is in good part due to excellent
leadership. I can’t imagine a better executive than Ed Orzechowski to guide the
organization through the next year.

The Spanish Catholic Center is a welcoming
place for immigrants, providing educational,
medical and dental services. In partnership with
the Howard University College of Dentistry,
dentists in advanced pediatric training staff
the dental clinic two days a week. Supervised
by attending dentist, assistant professor Dr.
Debra Jeffries (right), students such as Dr.
Carlos Boston (left) treat young patients using
the latest techniques. “Some children come
in with severe decay because of no care in
their country of origin or because of lack
of access to treatments here. We provide
comprehensive care and foster good
oral health habits,” explains
Dr. Jeffries.

I am so impressed by the clients of the Spanish Catholic Center; they are well on their
way to self-sufficiency, often overcoming much adversity. The Center gives them the
job readiness, language, medical and dental assistance they need to get on their feet.

Program: Adult Education
Adults studying to earn their GED often
need extra help with math. Joaquin Hangen
(pictured), a retired engineer, is happy to assist
them. Mr. Hangen, a longtime supporter of
Catholic Charities, knew he wanted to teach and
asked where he was needed. He was directed to
the Adult Education’s GED program as a math
tutor. For four years he has assisted adults eager
to learn, pass the GED and better their lives. It is
a partnership that works well. Mr. Hangen has
great satisfaction working one-on-one with
clients, helping them to reach their goals.
“After all,” he says, “teaching is the best gift
we can give.”

As part of the Catholic Charities Foundation Board, I’ve seen the generosity of many. I
also have seen the suffering of men, women and children who are homeless, hungry or
sick. Catholic Charities offers services that reach out to those who suffer. We couldn’t
do this work without those who partner with us to make things better.

Program: Parish Partners
Inspired by the visit of Pope Benedict XVI,
Catholic Charities organized the Hunger
to Hope Food Drive in April 2008. The drive
collected more than 228,000 lbs. of food for the
Capital Area Food Bank and local pantries. This
grand total—enough food to feed 350 families
three meals a day for the 50 days of the Easter
Season—was presented to his Holiness as a
birthday gift. The newly launched Parish Partners
Program collaborated with the 140 parishes
in the Archdiocese to bring the drive to
fruition. Parish Partners unites the grassroots
services of parishes with the programs
and resources of Catholic Charities to
serve parishioners and community
neighbors in need.

Good
Samaritan Society
Your Future Legacy
For many of us, the greatest satisfaction in life is in helping people—making
everything and everyone we touch a little bit better. The Good Samaritan
Society provides a significant opportunity to do just that with a charitable
gift to Catholic Charities Foundation. The Society recognizes friends who
have provided for the future of Catholic Charities through bequests or
other estate and planned gifts.
Making a legacy gift has given many friends of
Catholic Charities the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping ensure the
future of Catholic Charities and
our ability to open doors to
help and hope in our
community.
Circle of Hope
The Power of Philanthropy
The Circle of Hope is a leadership program for people
who share the social service mission of Catholic Charities—
to strengthen the lives of those in need by giving help that
empowers and hope that lasts. An annual giving program and
major gifts club, the Circle of Hope is open to individuals,
couples or family foundations who contribute $5,000 or more
in a calendar year.
Those who join the Circle of Hope become members of
an exclusive and growing network of benefactors who,
through their generous support and leadership,
are helping individuals in need to achieve
new levels of self-sufficiency and an
improved quality of life.
For more information on any of these programs, please contact Alicia Figueiredo,
Directorof Development, at (202) 772-4397 or [email protected].
Building
Partnership Program
Vision Partners
Catholic Charities recognizes the value added to social service delivery with
the involvement of volunteers from our community. The Building Partnership
Program connects organizations and individuals willing to lend a hand with Catholic
Charities’ buildings in need of maintenance or repair. A Program Partner “adopts” a
building and assumes responsibility for certain projects.
Participation in the program is available to any organization or individual willing to
provide the philanthropic support and/or volunteer services required to help maintain
a Catholic Charities’ building and enhance the services housed there. Partnerships
are specially tailored to pair the community outreach mission of the sponsor with
the maintenance and volunteer needs of the facility.
