GENERAL PROJECTS
Vacant Commercial Property Maintenance Ordinance
On March 2, 2004, the City Council adopted Ordinance O-04-1449, which sets in place
requirements for the maintenance of vacant commercial property and buildings. The
general purpose of the ordinance is to protect the public health, safety and welfare by
establishing registration requirements and minimum maintenance standards for vacant
non-residential buildings and structures, and preserving and protecting property values
through the prevention of structural deterioration of vacant non-residential buildings
and structures.
The ordinance generally requires vacant commercial buildings to be secure to prevent
unauthorized access, with limits on the location of security fencing. All trash and debris
must be removed from the property, and all landscaping must be maintained as if the
building were occupied. Parking lots, paved areas, and fire suppression equipment
must also be maintained. There are other maintenance requirements for exterior walls,
roofs, and windows and doors.
Master Plan Update
The final round of neighborhood meetings for the Master Plan Update is being held in
March and April. The Planning and Zoning Commission will conduct hearings on the
updated plan in May and make a recommendation to the City Council. The plan will be
considered by the City Council in June. For more information on the Master Plan
