TIP
Signposts
All the signposts along the
hiking trails in Oberstdorf were
overhauled and replaced at the
beginning of the 2002 winter
season. Instead of giving the
distance in kilometres, they
now indicate how long it
will take to get to a specific
destination. The amount of
time it takes hikers to cover
the distances depends on their
individual fitness levels. The
walking time is calculated as
follows: flat routes and those
with a slight incline approx.
4-6 km per hour, steeper
inclines, e.g. mountain hiking
routes, 300-400 metres of
altitude per hour.
yellow: Trail is in the
valley (flat) and is accessible
with ordinary shoes and, in
part, also with a pram.
red: Trail is accessible with
sturdy shoes (good soles);
competency on alpine terrain
is required.
blue: Sturdy shoes, competency on alpine terrain and
a good head for heights are
required.

Escape from everyday life
into the Oberstdorf mountain world
FROM THE VALLEY TO THE SUMMIT
So you want to experience pure and unadulterated nature? Then get walking!
Enjoy a leisurely springtime walk along the paths at the foot of the mountains
when the dandelions have transformed Oberstdorf’s valleys into a carpet
of yellow. In early summer, delight in the sun and shady forests at medium altitude
whilst the last snows still glisten on the mountain peaks with the blue
skies behind. Or if you are looking for a real challenge on high-altitude trails and
fixed ropewalks, enjoy the almost endless panoramic views from the lofty
mountain heights. Oberstdorf boasts a 200-km network of varied routes at all
three altitudes with trails for all abilities.
MOUNTAINEERING IN THE ALPS
Numerous majestic peaks in the High Alps
invite the visitor to take a mountain hike.
A fascinating landscape awaits with its clear
lakes, flowery alpine meadows and craggy
rocks. There are stunning panoramic views
of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Having
made it to the top, hikers can choose from
various high-altitude trails with mountain
huts along the way and enjoy a unique
walking experience without steep inclines.
A particular highlight is the Heilbronner Weg,
which links the Kemptner and the Rappensee
mountain huts at an altitude of up to 2,600 m.
Enjoy the fascination of the mountain world
in all its diversity.

FASCINATING
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS ALL
THE YEAR ROUND
Where old customs and modern traditions
meet. Where classical music is staged in
extraordinary locations. Where the end of the
Alpine summer is celebrated with splendidly
decorated cows and the resonant tones
of brass bands. This is living culture at its
authentic best. Lose yourself in Oberstdorf’s
rich and diverse offer and journey into a
world full of cultural highlights.
MUSICAL SUMMER IN
OBERSTDORF
The strains of a violin at an altitude of 2,000 m,
the sonorous tones of a brass band in a
church, piano music in impressive concert
halls. Oberstdorf’s musical summer promises
a unique soundtrack in a magnificent setting.
FURTHER CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS
“Wilde Mändle Tanz” (a traditional dance),
Oberstdorf’s museum of local history,
churches, chapels and cultural treasures
where you least expect them.
TIP
The “VIEHSCHEID”
cattle drive
Every September, the end of
the Alpine summer is celebrated with the traditional
return of the cattle from the
mountain pastures. Ringing
bells, artistic garlands, brass
band music, wholesome
food and, of course, the
delicious Allgäu beer are all
part of the celebration – in
Oberstdorf, the return of
the cattle is just one of the
countless traditions that are
still celebrated today.
