CANTOR'S MESSAGE
By Cantor Jonathan Angress
Dear Friends,
As we begin to approach the Hebrew month of Adar, I begin
to think about and prepare for the festive holiday of Purim.
It is one of my favorite holidays for two different reasons.
Firstly, I can dress up in costume as whomever I choose. Ever
since I was a child, I loved making my own costumes and
making them as realistic and authentic as possible. Purim
allows me to do just that.
The second reason that Purim is one of my favorite holidays
is a little more profound than costuming and lies within my
musical tastes. As a Jewish musician, I view myself as an advocate and educator
of unknown and obscure genres of music found within our rich Jewish history. In
previous articles, I have discussed Jewish music from the Renaissance and Baroque
in relation to its composers and the holiday of Hannukah. Purim is no different.
The tradition of a Purim spiel comes from this time period in the form of the very
first Hebrew play ever written entitled Tsahot bedihuta dekidushin (A Comedy
of Betrothal) by Leone de Sommi circa 1550-1560. This play was the first of its
kind for many reasons, mainly that it was performed entirely in Hebrew. But, it
also ridiculed and satirized the wedding customs and traditions of the Italian Jews
during this time period.
The play was written in 5 acts with musical interludes between each act and select
scenes. What makes this play special is that both Jewish and non-Jewish composers
contributed music for Tsahot. While it was not surprising that a Jewish composer
would write music for his or her own community, it was out of the ordinary for a
non-Jewish composer to contribute their music as well. Based on this, we can deduce
that some form of anti-Semitism existed as far back as the 1500’s. Unfortunately,
the musical scores associated with this play are considered lost; however there does
exist many documents that describe the music in explicit detail as well as listing
some of the composers. Based on these documents, Jewish musical scholars such
as my colleague, Dr. Anna Levenstein, have been able to successfully reconstruct
modern editions of the scores to what the music may have been circa 1550-1560.
According to today’s standards, performing such a play on Purim may not be as
successful as it was during the time it was written. However, Leone de Sommi was
not foolish (as one often acts on Purim) in his desire to create something much
more than words on a page. He created the infamous tradition of the Purim spiel
which has become so popular and beloved today.
I would like to cordially invite each and every one of you to our Purim festivities
on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. We will be having a spaghetti dinner at 5:15pm
followed by services and the megillah reading featuring Stanley the Panther from
The Florida Panthers! Please see the flyer in this issue of The Scroll as well as at
the synagogue.
And speaking of plays, I would like to remind you all that on Sunday, March 22,
2015, at 7pm, we will be having "A Jewish Night On Broadway" featuring myself
and Broadway star Lauren Molina! Tickets are now on sale and make sure to order
now as they are selling out fast! Desserts will be served during intermission and a
private reception will follow the concert for sponsors only. Free babysitting will
also be provided. Call the synagogue office at 954-721-7660 to order your tickets!

“b’sever panim yafot “
The above quote ends the secondto-last tractate in the order
of Nezikin (damages) in the
Talmud.The tractate is more often
known as Pirkei Avot, literally,
the Chapters of our Fathers.
Interestingly, in Modern Hebrew
it is a common expression used to
denote “with open arms.”
Our president and board have
been discussing the concept of
“with open arms,”not in a Toraic
concept but with the idea of
becoming a more welcoming and
engaging Congregation.
Every committee of our
congregation is open to the
concept. We need volunteers and
we need you to think about how
you can help.
We have several active committees
who do much of the planning that
make membership in TBTST so
valuable to so many. Everyone
is looking for people to step
forward and share their expertise,
opinions and time to make those
efforts successful.
Of course, the Men’s Club and
the Sisterhood are obvious places
for you to help support activities
that benefit TBTST. The Men’s
Club motto – doing good while
having fun – really belongs to all
of them.
In the Scroll, you often read
about the Tikkun Olam/Mitzvah
committee. Committed hands are
always welcome.The membership
committee has a number of
projects that would help you feel
more engaged while welcoming
others.
The Rabbi is always looking
for people interested in widening
the work of the Membership
Committee and our Ways and
Means Committee is not just an
“ask for money” group, but is
involved in planning many of
our events.
And, by the way the Scroll would
be happy to have you aboard as
well.

President's Message
By Nancy Marks Small, President
Nancy’s installation message Jan 13, 2015
My Second Year as President of TBTST
It is truly an honor and a privilege to be President of Temple
Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek for a second year. I have always
considered it a source of pride to be a member of this congregation. I love the spirit, warmth, laughter, and community
that prevails today. Our congregation is a home for all of us.
It offers support and a sense of community in everyday life
as well as during times of our greatest joys or our deepest
pain. It is a center for worship, community service, social
action, and lifelong learning. I hope that we can encourage
more participation by every member of the congregation in
some activity of Temple life so that we may realize that the Temple is a warm and
integral part of our existence. We will continue our efforts to make our congregation inviting, accessible, and meaningful to all who enter its doors.
I would like to thank those of whom I have worked closely with this past year.
First Rabbi Gold- you are a constant source of guidance and you bring a calm and
soothing perspective on many issues. Cantor Angress- we cannot get enough of
your beautiful voice. We are so lucky to have you both as part of our TBTST family.
Regarding our education programs, we will continue to enhance our standard
of excellence in Early Childhood led by Sydney Berlin and Hebrew School led
by Ava Phillips. Thank you to Ronit Goldstein for developing our new Hebrew
School curriculum. The Youth group is flourishing under Director Diana Rakitin.
Our religious school and youth groups will continue to provide children with the
knowledge and skills to be future leaders in the Jewish community.
Thank you to our past Sisterhood Presidents: Cheryl Temkin and Jacqui Montag
for making our Sisterhood group one of the most active in Broward County. I am
anxious to work with our incoming President, Ellen Feldman. I look forward to
your important contributions to the life of our community: programmatically, financially and in a variety of unsung but very important ways. Our Men’s Club, led
by Barry Kanarek, also has made an impact on our community. We look forward
to exciting, upcoming programs from both groups.
Looking ahead, the Tikkun Olam committee, led by Jacqui Montag, will work
to create opportunities for congregants of all ages and interests to participate in
our mission to repair the world. Mitzvah Day is March 1st and I look forward to
seeing you there to help those in the community who need us.
Essential to Jewish life at TBTST is our twice daily minyans. If we all dedicated
one day each month to attending minyan, we would always have a community
when someone needs to say kaddish.
I want to thank all our officers for their help and guidance this past year. They
include Amir Watynski, Valerie Mercado, Nathan Winton, Jeff Eisensmith, Alan
Paley, David Berger, Jacqui Montag, Stewart Klawsky and Jody Glass. They have
worked tirelessly making sure this Synagogue attends to the needs of our membership. You have all taught me a lot and I know you will continue to advise me
going forward.
Thank you to our front office, starting with our newest staff member, Ken Kahn,
Business Manager, along with Ava Phillips, Kari Askin, Donna Rosier and Linda
Weintraub. I look forward to continue working with you in the upcoming year.

Is Temple Beth Torah

In Your Will?
The synagogue’s role begins
at birth and continues without interruption throughout
the entire course of our
lives. By remembering the
synagogue in our wills, we
can do our part to assure
future generations that their
religious home will be there
to serve.
We depend upon more than
just dues alone to sustain
all that we do. If we are
concerned about the future
of Judaism, we must project
its influence and our influence into the future. Few
memorials are more worthy
than those provided by an endowment to TBTST through
a bequest.
Your legacy can reflect
everything that is most important and meaningful to
you. You can declare where
your funds might be used – to
supply the Hebrew School,
for example, or to support
one of TBTST’s designated
funds.
We all want TBTST to be
a spiritual home for generations to come, just as it has
been for you and your family.
Let us ensure the future of
our congregation and help it
grow and serve our people.
Thank you Jeff Eisensmith for chairing the nominating committee, along with
his committee: Amir Watynski, Jeff Reisch, Glenda Sandhouse, Marci Ronik,
Marshall Geisser, Bruce Berkowitz, Rhonda Jaffe, and Steve Siegel for creating
this year’s slate of officers and Board of Directors. Thank you Jeff for being the
best advisor one can have.
Thank you Glenda Sandhouse and Amy Weinberg for co-chairing the Installation
Ceremony. Thank you Steve Sax for your opening remarks. It took a lot of preparing
and organizing, and I sincerely appreciate the effort. Thank you Cantor for leading
us in Hatikvah and the National Anthem. Your voice sings to us!
Thank you goes out to our outgoing officer, Nathan Winton who served 3 years
as Membership VP, and longtime board member Danny Glass, who served TBTST
with strong commitment and leadership. We have a long history of dedicated leaders and you are great examples of this.
I look forward to working with all the newly installed Officers: Valerie Mercado,
Jody Glass, Alan Paley, Cheryl Temkin, Jacqui Montag and Stewart Klawsky, our
Board of Directors including Jerry Berkowitz, Lou Brawer, Marty Friedman, Steve
Sax, Dennis Siegel, Jay Taitelman, Nathan Winton, Marvin Kaleky and Janet Workman, as well as with our Committee Chairs and committee members in the future.
A huge thank you to my husband Mitch. I could not have taken on this responsibility without your support. Nothing equals the joy of having you in my life being
able to share the highs, lows and everything in between of our lives. I love you
very much.
Many great events took place in 2014. I cannot wait to see what 2015 brings.
Accomplishing all of this work takes a village. And what a village we are. From
the bottom of my heart, I thank you for the honor of serving again as President
of this extraordinary congregation and look forward with joy and excitement to a
productive and fulfilling second year. You have entrusted me with this responsibility and I promise that I will give it my all.
Please continue on this journey with me.
Thank you and Shabbat Shalom.

Early Childhood News
Sydney Berlin, Early Childhood Director
There are lots of important things that must occur for a summer
to be truly great. You need strumming guitars, fun activities,
new skills, new friends, water play, and clothes covered in paint
and lost voices, just to name a few. All of those things, plus
hundreds more, are part of the camp experience at Temple Beth
Torah Sha’aray Tzedek Camp Mah-Tov. But these things are
not what makes us great. Though we have a beautiful facility
where our campers enjoy swimming, H2O Zone, playground, art, music, sports,
gymnastics, cooking, and amazing field trips, they are not what make us different.
What makes TBTST Camp Mah-Tov great, and why we are different from everywhere else, is our staff. From our team of seasoned camp counselors, who are year
round Early Childhood Teachers, to our newest Jr. Counselor, our staff understands
our priorities (safety, fun, community, and informal education) and they believe
in the importance of summer camp. They are highly trained to be supportive, to
build bonds within the camp community and gently help even the youngest campers step outside of their comfort zone, challenging them to take positive risks and
engage in independent decision making. At Camp Mah-Tov, we know that camp
is an experience that a child holds forever. And we know that a break from school
is not a break from learning. Our goal, for all of our campers, is for this summer
to be the most enriching experience of their lives.
This summer we will be offering a wide variety of camp experiences. We have
programs for all ages and for every type of camper. We offer flexible enrollment
options from the entire 9 week summer, 3 week sessions or weekly enrollment.
Our camps are inclusive and offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of all
our campers. Most importantly, Camp Mah-Tov is extremely safe.
A recent study done by the American Camping Association found that 96% of
campers said that “camp helped them make new friends,” and 92% said, “Camp
helped me feel good about myself.” Seventy percent of camp parents said, “My
child gained self-confidence at camp.” These statistics are impressive, but if you
still aren’t convinced, try and remember your days at camp. Talk to a friend about
their camp experiences. Or even better, talk to a family that has been involved in
our programs.
Even though summer is still a few months away, we are offering some great early
bird enrollment specials for this summer. Registration & Early Bird specials will
be available in February. If you have any questions about camp, please contact us

SHEVAT / ADAR 5775
Beit Sefer
By Ava Phillips-Education Director/Temple Administrator
As the first half of the year comes to a close and as we think
about Purim and Pesach literally just around the corner, we are
reminded of the goals that we set for this year. As educators
we think about what kinds of things we have done this year,
what changes have taken place and how we can improve on our
curricula for next year. What needs have not been addressed
and what really worked well this past semester? Everyone has a different idea of
what Jewish Education is all about and where it should be going in the next few
years and beyond. The difficulty in defining Jewish Education is a reflection of
the problems inherent in establishing goals and curricula for the Jewish school.
At one time it was assumed that the purpose of the Jewish school was to transmit
knowledge, skills and values. How this was done of course, depended on the
branch of Judaism under whose aegis a school was established. Often, it was felt
that the transmission of knowledge would automatically result in moral religious
behavior. After all, “the ignorant man cannot be pious.”
However, experience has shown that change in people are not caused by textbooks alone, that human interactions have as much to do with the development of
a child’s personality as a school-perhaps even more so. In providing the setting
for the acquisition of knowledge, the Jewish school expects parents to share in
the task of teaching their children diligently how to live as Jews. In the decades
that followed WW2, many parents abdicated that responsibility by becoming more
secularized. That became top priority and playing down their Judaism became less
important. The Jews were becoming Americanized or Canadianized depending
on where you settled and that became very important to us as Jews. The school
continued to influence children and adhere to Jewish values but this was rejected
openly by the parents.
The problems still remain very much the same. Many parents still work against
the school rather than with it. They can be discouraging when children attempt to
practice what they have learned and yet, they blame the school if the child does not
retain his or her identity. By now, it is clear to all of us as educators that parents
should be the real teachers of their children. The school should supplement and
reinforce what is lived at home and family education should be considered the
most viable supplement to the traditional Jewish classroom.
Another difficulty in today’s world is the isolation from other forms of Jewish
learning. As an entity unto itself, the Hebrew school is concerned mainly with
formal classroom experiences. Youth groups and summer camps were not seen as
educational and only in the last 10-15 years has that philosophy changed and we
have now begun to recognize that different kinds of learning are most effective at
various developmental stages of the child. We are very much into experimenting
with alternatives to formal education.
We encourage all of you to join us in any aspect of synagogue life and help us to
become a fabulous place to be here at Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek.

The "Ru'ach" Chavurah enjoyed the Temple dinner after Friday night services
in November. They also participated in a Chanukah party in December where
everyone brought a dish. January is a good time to get together for wine tasting. Each couple chose a month to plan the activity for the group. We meet
the second Sunday of each month.

Hang Ten, Sharks!
By: Samantha Gaynor
The TBTST Youth Department says “Aloha” to the 2015
annual Chapter Weekend. This three-day long, luau themed
experience takes place from February 13th-15th. The weekend will give our chapter a chance to bond in a special way
apart from conventions with other chapters. Some of the
great programs of the weekend include an “Untalent Show”
where participants get to display their hilarious abilities,
games of Whirlyball, and lots of ruach and mixers! The
USYers also enjoy a meaningful discussion on how to manage stress and anxiety
in high school while balancing the stressful tasks with the fun activities like USY.
In the past years, Chapter Weekends have taken place at everyone’s favorite outdoor
campground—Camp Owaissa Bauer in Homestead, Florida. Everyone loves the
chance to get in touch with the wild, especially at services in the nature, but this year
TBTST experiences a wonderful hotel as a new location for bonding. Pre-Kadima,
Kadima, and USY spend nights at the Lake Buena Vista Resort & Spa hotel in
Orlando and takes the bus to Universal for an extra special addition.
While usually Yom Disney takes place as a separate event, this year a trip to Orlando to visit Universal Studios is included in the Chapter Weekend itinerary. Yom
Universal is attended by all USYers of the Hanegev region which includes the three
sub regions: Arvot, Ein Gedi, and Mercaz. So, while Chapter Weekend will be all
about chapter bonding, TBTST will spend time with other groups as well while
they have a blast going on rides and spending time in Universal.
For the Hawaiian luau theme, one of the nights of the weekend is for dressing up
in your most colorful and bright floral luau attire. One luau shirt will be given
away and tropical games like limbo will be played. Who says sharks don’t like the
water? Surf’s up!

TBTST SISTERHOOD
Ellen Feldman, President
When we joined the synagogue five years ago it never occurred to me
that five years later I would be embarking on a new “adventure” by
becoming president of Sisterhood. But then maybe it’s not so surprising after all. We came to then TBT not really knowing anyone at all,
but thanks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere it didn’t take long
for us to start feeling at home in our new congregation. But to really feel part of
the Temple community I knew Sisterhood would be my link, not just by attending
activities and programs, but by being on the board. I was immediately impressed
by the comradery, commitment, and the supportive and congenial atmosphere.
Sisterhood quickly gave me a community within a community and new friendships
were soon formed. Working on committees and programs only reinforced my observations that I was lucky to be part of such a terrific group of women. I was also
fortunate to join the congregation when the first Chavurah was being formed and
through this avenue our connection to the Temple deepened. Becoming part of the
now TBTST congregation has enhanced my life in so many ways. I look forward to
the next two years and know I have many awesome women who will be there with
me to continue the “terrific run” accomplished by Cheryl and Jacqui. On behalf
of all of Sisterhood, I want to thank them for their time, effort and hard work these
past three years. Yes, it was full of milestones and we will keep building on them.
Best of luck to both of you as you move on to other positions in the synagogue. I
also want to thank Linda Weintraub, Shari Baer, Barbara Eisensmith and Sheila
Ader for their continuing dedication to sisterhood and I welcome all our new board
members. I look forward to working with all of you.
As this edition of the Scroll goes to print, 17 women from our sisterhood will be
cruising on the Majesty of the Seas, joining other sisterhoods of the Florida Region
of Women’s League For Conservative Judaism. Seventeen women out a of total of
forty-four women! We are the largest contingent from all of Florida! More about
our “Wheels on Water II” weekend next month.
We are wasting no time in starting off the new year with a game night of Bunko
on Thursday, January 22nd. What a great way to mix and mingle while having fun.
Our program for February – Sunday, February 8th – takes us to Delray Beach for
brunch followed by a book review at the Murder on the Beach Mystery Book Store.
Be sure to join us! Sunday, February 22nd @7:00 p.m. Sisterhood will be hosting
Rabbi Amy Eilberg, the first woman ordained as a Conservative Rabbi. She will
share some of her personal thoughts followed by a dessert reception. Mark your
calendars for the following months as well:
Sunday, March 15th – Women’s Seder • Sunday, April 26th – Fashion Show
I welcome all of you and look forward to seeing you soon.

Men’s Club
Barry Kanarek, M.D., President - [email protected]
I hope you all had a great New Year! We have a very exciting year
planned for 2015. I am glad to report that our membership is taking
a real interest in the Men’s Club and we expect a significant increase
in participation this year.
Our annual World Wide Wrap will be held this year on Sunday,
February 1st at 8:30 at the Temple. As always fathers and sons and
mothers and daughters are invited to attend. It will be a spiritual
event we will be sharing with Conservative Temples around the
world. Rabbi Gold as always will be discussing the mitzvah of Tefillin.
Dr. Alan Miller has arranged for members and interested members of the Men’s
Club to attend a Florida Panthers hockey game on Sunday, February 8th at 3 PM
against the current Division leading Nashville Predators. Fathers, sons, mothers
and daughters are all invited. The price is only $28/person which includes all fees.
We have great seats in the upper deck able to view the game unobstructed. If we
can get 50 attendees we may be able to get the Panther bus to pick us up! We also
plan on a tailgating party at the Temple prior to leaving for the Arena.
We are kicking off our Yom Hashoah Candle Program. This year it is the goal of
the FJMC to have a million candles lit in remembrance. Last year’s program was
a great success. As you might remember with every candle sent out we included
the name of a child who was murdered in the Holocaust along with the site and
date. It was so meaningful to know that when we lit our candles we were doing it
not only for loved ones we may have known, but for a child who might have been
completely forgotten.
We are also planning on a monthly Sunday breakfast with some very exciting
topics that should be of interest across all demographics.
If you are interested in joining or being an active participant of the club or have
any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

Why Not Join a
Chavurah?
As part of our New Roads to
Engagement Project, Temple
Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek
is encouraging couples or
families to bring their common interests to the synagogue. This is not a religious
group, but a group of family
or friends that want to socialize together. Perhaps it is an
existing group of friends that
you join each month to have
dinner with, see a movie or
attend a play. Any group of
people with common interests can form a Chavurah.
Shortly, you will receive a
brochure and questionnaire
describing this concept,
and asking only for you to
complete and return the
questionnaire to the synagogue office. Based on your
responses, we will form a
group that fits your needs.
Please join with us as we
reach out and engage our
congregation. Watch for our
brochure!

Why Not Join a
Committee?
As it happens, much of the
“work” of TBTST and most
of the planning takes place in
committees. So, committee membership is a great place to begin
becoming involved in synagogue
life. Every congregation relies on
its volunteers both to work and to
lead. Most committees are open to
all who are interested and willing
to participate.
Two committees that are very interested in finding new, enthusiastic members are the Membership
Committee, and the Marketing
and Communications Committee.
Volunteers are always welcome to
be part of ourTikkun Olam committee, the sponsors of our enormously successful annual Mitzvah
Day. The Rabbi is always looking
for people interested in the Adult
Education Committee. Our Ways
and Means Committee serves as a
program committee and manages
many of our synagogue events.
Extra hands are always sought
to help in those activities.
If you have children, you know
about our PTOs. Keep them in
mind as well.
Both the Sisterhood and the
Men’s Club sponsor programs and
support activities that benefit the
synagogue. They both do their
work in a social atmosphere and
many deep friendships have arisen
among their members. If the
notion of a committee conjures
up the world of corporations,
cubicles and bureaucracy (ours
are much friendlier by the way)
think about becoming active in
one of our auxiliaries.
Only you know what might
interest you and, if you do, let
the office know and they will put
you in touch with the relevant
chairperson. If you know that
you would like to help, but are
unsure about just what you might
enjoy doing, talk to one of the
officers of the congregation or to
the presidents of the Sisterhood
or the Men’s Club.

Save the Date....Mitzvah Day is Coming!
By Jacqui Montag, Tikkun Olam Committee Chair
Mitzvah Day will be on Sunday, March 1, 2015. We will be doing a number of
meaningful and important projects. Some of the projects will be familiar to our
members, but we may have new projects to do after our committee meets.
We will need participation as well as donations in order to make Mitzvah Day a
success.
Wish List:
Volunteers---Nothing gets done by itself. If you’re interested, willing and able,
we can find a place for you. Just contact Jacqui Montag at [email protected]
or at 954-562-2002. We welcome new people to be on the committee and suggest
ideas for projects, as well as helpers on the actual day of the event.
Peanut Butter, Jelly, Bread---We make hundreds of sandwiches for the Broward
Cooperative Feeding Service.
Clothing---We are especially interested in clothing suitable for job interviews, polo
shirts of a single color that students can use as part of a uniform, formal wear for
Becca’s Closet and clothes for battered women trying to start new lives.
Luggage---As JAFCO’s older unadopted teens “age out” of the state support
system, they will need gently used or new luggage in which to pack their clothing.
Non-perishable food---We collect food year-round in our food cart and send it
to WECARE Food Bank. On Mitzvah Day we’d like to have a concentrated effort
for food donations because the need is very great. Paper towels, toilet paper and
diapers are also greatly needed and cannot be purchased with food stamps.
Help the Humane Society of Broward County---Bath towels, blankets and wash
cloths, Purell liquid sanitizer and Purell wipes, big rubber chew toys that can be
disinfected, ping pong balls for cats. paper towels, hand sanitizer and office supplies are all needed.
Blood Donation---We are working with One Blood to have a Bloodmobile on
premises on Mitzvah Day.
Visit Seniors at a Senior Residence---Each year a group visits with and entertains
seniors on Mitzvah Day. It’s a program that the seniors look forward to each year.
There will be other activities as well. Watch for details in a brochure that will be
mailed to every congregant next month. So if you’d like to have a great time and
do a mitzvah, make sure to mark your calendar for Sunday, March 1, 2015, for
Mitzvah Day.
Thank you,
The Membership Committee meets every month on
the first Wednesday at 7:00 pm. If interested, please
call Jody Glass at 954-263-6778 or email [email protected]. We hope you will join us.

Tree of Life
The tree has always been a symbol of
life and strength in the Jewish tradition. The parts of the tree depend upon
one another just as those in need in
our community depend upon Temple
Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help
and support.
In the same manner, Temple Beth
Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon
the generosity of our community to
enable us to continue to provide that
support. The Tree of Life is the perfect
symbol to allow us to recognize the
generous donors who, in turn, help
us to continue providing necessary
services to our community.
Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc.
or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not
only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and
in the future.
There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.
If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly
assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at

of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are
mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request.
Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind
deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift
of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness.
CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical
equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give
charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person.
Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $______________________________________________________
Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:

Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’s
Mazon Project
The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need
regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we receive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward
County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline.
Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our
services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for
our neighbors in need.
WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes handknitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry
items and medical equipment are very much appreciated.
Facts about Hunger in Broward County
According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and
4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in
Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

I’ll Treat You Like Family
Choosing a doctor to trust with the
care of your eyes, your precious sight,
can be a difficult decision. You want
someone board-certified, professional
and experienced. But you also want a
doctor who will take the time to listen
to you, explain things and treat you with
kindness and respect.
I have been in practice since 1982,
caring for patients with a personal touch. Whether it’s an eye
exam or surgery, you’ll get the best I have to give. You’ll be
treated the way you know you should be.
Like family.
