TEXCOCO, Mexico
t’s a little known fact that Nacho
Libre, a character played by Jack
Black in the 2006 movie, is actually
based on a legendary real-life Mexican
wrestling priest. In the film, Nacho Libre
is the undercover identity adopted by
Black, a monastery cook, in order to
become a luchador, a masked lucha libre
wrestler. The idea of a priest donning a
lucha libre mask is rather outlandish, but
Sergio Gutierrez Benitez, a.k.a Fray Tormenta, actually did that in real life.
Born in 1945, Benitez is a Catholic priest who runs a home for orphans.
As he struggled to support the kids, he
decided on a rather radical means of
raising money – becoming a wrestler. He
designed his own red-and-yellow lucha
libre mask (yellow for liveliness he must
display in the ring, and red for the blood
he must spill on behalf of the orphanage),
and adopted the name ‘Fray Tormenta’.
On May 26, 1973, Benitez became a
secular priest in a run down church where
he also set up an orphanage named ‘La

Fray Tormenta long before he actually
started wrestling.

Running an orphanage was not easy for
Benitez, and once he settled down, money
became an issue, and that’s when Fray
Tormenta, the wrestling champion, came
to life.
For an entire year, he woke up at 4:30
am and traveled to a gym in Mexico City
to learn the art of lucha libre, and returned
to church by 8:00 am for the daily mass.
He earned 200 pesos (about $10) for his
first fight. It wasn’t much, but it was something, and he didn’t want to give up. He
kept fighting and gradually built a following for himself. Soon enough, Benitez was
admitted into the Consejo Mundial de
Lucha Libre, the foremost promotion of
the sport, and the money got a lot better.
The bishop in Texcoco, naturally, wasn’t
impressed – he demanded that Benitez
give up the sport, but the man was too
stubborn to do anything of the sort.
With time, Benitez became a celebrity
in his own right as Fray Tormenta. His
story was portrayed in the 1991 French
film L’Homme au masque d’or (The Man
in the Golden Mask), and Benitez earned
a good sum of money for the rights to his
life story. He used it to build a brick and
mortar orphanage in Hidalgo. And when
Nacho Libre was released in 2006, he did
the same in Texcoco.
Benitez officially retired from wrestling
in 2011, after 23 years of donning the
mask for charity. However, he still sometimes wears his mask during his duties as
a priest, much to the delight of his congregation.

Obama: US will defeat terror threat’s new phase
I
WASHINGTON (AP)
n a rare Oval Office address, President Barack Obama vowed Sunday
night the United States would overcome a new phase of the terror threat that
seeks to “poison the minds” of people here
and around the world, as he sought to reassure Americans shaken by recent attacks in
Paris and California.
The president’s speech followed Wednesday’s shooting in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people and wounded 21.
Authorities say a couple carried out the
attack and the wife pledged allegiance to
the Islamic State and its leader in a Facebook post.
“I know that after so much war, many
Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate
cure,” he said, speaking from a lectern in
his West Wing office. “The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it.”
Obama said in his 13-minute address
that while there was no evidence the shooters were directed by a terror network overseas or part of a broader plot, “the two of
them had gone
down the dark
path of radicalization.”
In

he called on Muslims in the U.S. and

The spread of radical Islam into American communities, he said, is “a real

The president’s most specific policy
announcement was to order the departments of State and Homeland Security to
review the fiance visa program that the
female shooter in California used to enter
the U.S. In his remarks, Obama referred
to a visa waiver program that Congress is
also reviewing, but the White House later
clarified he meant the fiance program.
He also reiterated his call for broader
gun control legislation, saying no matter
how effective law enforcement and
intelligence agencies are, they can’t identify every would-be shooter. He called it
a matter of national security to prevent
potential killers from getting guns.
“What we can do, and must do, is make
it harder for them to kill,” he said.

Texas birth certificate rules
often unenforced
In this September 16, 2015, photo, a woman in Sullivan City, Texas, who said she entered the country illegally

denied a birth certificate.
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP)
T
exas has for seven years said
it won’t accept Mexican identification cards when issuing
birth certificates for children of people in
the United States illegally. But it doesn’t
appear to have stepped up enforcement
until recently, amid mounting political
pressure to get tougher on immigration,
records obtained by The Associated Press
show.
That could validate complaints from
immigrant parents suing in federal court,
claiming the state is denying “birthright”
U.S. citizenship for their Texas-born children guaranteed under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The AP used open records requests to
get annual “self-assessment” surveys completed by local registrars. They show that
officials in at least five cities and counties along the U.S.-Mexico border told the
Texas Department of State Health Services
during the past three years that they were
allowing parents to get copies of birth certificates using a Mexican identification
known as the matricula consular.
“Most of applicants are here illegally
as they claim, and are therefore unable
to obtain a valid form of identification
from the United States,” Janie Madero,
then-registrar in McAllen, wrote in a 2013
survey response. “Therefore our office
accepts the matricula consular so they can
obtain the birth certificate for their children who were born here.”
Elsewhere along the border, Arizona
generally doesn’t accept the matricula
consular while New Mexico does. California lets notaries decide whether the
Mexican ID is acceptable.
Texas says it doesn’t trust the matricula
consular because of forgery fears, not politics. Hospitals provide documentation of
births in Texas, but parents have to obtain
birth certificates from registrars or other
officials.
In June 2008, the health department
wrote to the Mexican consulate in Austin
saying federal authorities had determined
the matricula consular wasn’t a “secure”
form of identification and that it therefore
wouldn’t be accepted for people obtaining
birth certificates for their newborns.
The state began spelling out that policy
in registrar handbooks in 2010.
But the survey results show some registrars repeatedly admitting to accepting
the Mexican documents since 2013, the
furthest back the state keeps records, and
Texas officials not asking them to stop
doing so until recently — if at all.
When and how strictly Texas began
enforcing its ID rules are important since
more than two-dozen parents in the
country illegally have sued, saying the
state is effectively denying citizenship the
U.S. Constitution guarantees to all born
on U.S. soil.

Newly elected Latina city council

SEATTLE, Washington
N
ovember 2015 elections in
Washington were “historic
and more than a little significant,” according to former State Representative Phyllis Gutierrez-Kenney,
who served in Washington’s legislature
for 16 years. On Tuesday, November
3rd, eight Latinas in four cities in Washington became first-time elected city
council members.
According to Gutierrez-Kenney,
“Spanning my 50+ years in Washington, I don’t think there are more than
a dozen Latinas or Latinos, combined,
who have been elected to sit on city
councils statewide,” Gutierrez-Kenney
said. Those elected earlier this month
are true history-makers and we believe
they represent only the first wave.”

hosted a reception on Tuesday, December 1st to honor the newly elected officials and to mark the historical occasion.
Clearly, court-mandated district
elections in Yakima made a difference
where three Latinas were elected. In its
history, neither a Latina nor a Latino
had ever been elected to serve on Yakima’s city council. The winners included
one candidate, however, who won in a
district that is not a majority Latino district. The candidates living in majority
Latino districts in Yakima were elected
by wide margins.
District elections also may have
helped to elect two Latinas to Seattle’s
city council, although one Latina candidate won a city-wide elected position.
Like Yakima, prior to November 3rd,
neither a Latina nor a Latino had ever
been elected to serve on Seattle’s city
council.

Washington man freed after DNA
clears him in mom’s death
SEATTLE, Washington (AP)
A
Washington state man convicted of killing his mother 15
years ago walked free out of
prison Wednesday after investigators said
new DNA tests linked another man to the
crime.
Donovan Allen left Clallam Bay Corrections Center on the Olympic Peninsula a
day after a prosecutor dismissed the case
against him, lawyers with the Innocence
Project Northwest at University of Washington Law School told The Associated
Press.
“It feels surreal,” Allen said in a statement
emailed by Anna Tolin, the organization’s
director. “I can finally begin the life I was
robbed of. ... I’m so glad to have a second
chance to be a father, a son, an uncle.”
Allen was 18 when his mother, Sharon
Cox, 49, was strangled and bludgeoned in
2000. He confessed to police after an overnight, 14-hour-long interrogation. Though
he later recanted, he was convicted of
aggravated first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
Investigators said new DNA tests
recently linked Cox’s nephew, 42-year-old
Brian Del Kitts, to the killing and he was
arrested last week. He pleaded not guilty on
Tuesday to an aggravated murder charge.
The Innocence Project Northwest
requested the new DNA testing — with
technology that is far more sensitive than
was available 15 years ago — earlier this
year in an effort to exonerate Allen.
Policy director Lara Zarowsky told The
Associated Press last week that prosecutors never suggested during Allen’s trials
that more than one person may have been
responsible, the new testing excludes
14
Allen as a
suspect, and
Allen should
be freed from
prison.
Police said
the tests, performed
by
the
Washington State
Patrol Crime
Lab, provided
Donavan Allen
“c o m p e l l i n g
evidence” linking Kitts to the killing. Prosecutors dismissed the case against Allen
without prejudice, meaning charges could
be brought again if further evidence arises
linking him. Allen’s lawyers said the DNA
test excluded him as a suspect.
Cowlitz County Prosecutor Ryan Jurvakainen called the decision to drop the
charge against Allen “the right thing to do.”
His lawyer described the case as emotional.
“I’ve been meeting with Donovan at this
prison for the past four years, and I am
truly humbled to share this moment when
Donovan can begin to rebuild his life after
all he has endured,” Tolin wrote.
Cox was the sister of Kitts’ adoptive
mother. Kitts was identified as a person
of interest during the original investigation, Longview police said, but there wasn’t
enough evidence to charge him.
Among the items Innocence Project
Northwest wanted retested were scrapings
from Cox’s fingernails, a cigarette butt,
a gun, a phone cord, precise areas of the
victim’s clothing, and hair found in Cox’s
hand. Cowlitz County Superior Court
Judge Marilyn Haan granted the request in
June.

Gossip
Dr. Lorena Barboza
[email protected]
If you like gossip programs, don’t feel
bad.
There are several scientific arguments
supporting and explaining the love of
such gossip programs. For centuries
there has been gossip; it is not a new
activity and has been a change in the
oral tradition.
Could you tell me where the child was
going when he

give the example
of Spain because
there they are

Those that produced “calling” effect on him. We’ve
also observed, those of us who have
been close to small children, one of the
things they like to do is watch cartoons
on TV…
Numerous studies confirm the theory
that television in itself cases addiction,
which is why I brought up the example
of children, even though that is not the
topic of this column. When watching
television, all of our imaginative capabilites are numb, and so we are exposed
to the so-called trash TV. We usually sit
in front of the device wanting to disconnect from reality and relax, believing
that we should not imagine, or think,
or read. We need gossip for sheer survival and luckily the television gives us
all that we need. Hence the huge audiences that gossip programs on TV and
radio have...even though the idea of
gossip, rumors and bullying go against
our social coexistence. That’s just how
we are.
Dave Says
Is loaning giving
or helping?
Dear Dave,
The guy who has been my best friend
since grade school
recently asked me to
loan him $5,000. All
I have in savings in
$5,000, but I would
be willing to give him
$1,000. The problem
Dave Ramsey
is that while he’s
a great friend with
a good heart, he’s always getting
himself into binds when it comes to
money. Do you think I should give him
$1,000?
—Israel
Dear Israel,
If I were in your shoes, and I was going
to give this guy a fifth of everything I
had, I’d want to know it was going to
save his life. From what you’ve said,
it sounds like he’s just out of control
with his money while you’re trying
to save. That being the case, I’m not
sure you’d really be helping him.
If you want to gift your friend some
money, then do it. But there’s no way
I’d tell you to give him everything
you’ve managed to save. And I certainly wouldn’t do it as a loan.
Ask yourself if you believe deep
down in your heart that giving this
guy $1,000 would truly be a blessing to him or if, by doing it, you’d be
acting as an enabler and basically
just funding more of his stupidity
with money. From what you’ve told
me, I think there’s a good chance the
answer is the latter. And if that’s the
case, you can be a much better friend
by saying you love him enough to not
ruin your friendship.
