From the President…
Where has the time gone? I hope
you had a restful summer and a
great start to your teaching year.
I recently attended the MTNA
Leadership Summit at the
Cincinnati, OH headquarters.
The Summit started in the 1990s
with the mission of bringing
together state presidents and
MTNA leaders to get to know
more about our organization. This had been put on hold
for the past several years due to the economic situation and
was inserted into the annual conference. With the financial
situation slowly improving at MTNA, it was returned to its
original format this year.
The summit was very informative and valuable. In one
especially helpful session, presidents were organized into small
groups according to membership. This enabled us to find
common areas of difficulty and discuss possible solutions.
Many topics were discussed, but the main concerns shared
were declining membership and the fact that conference costs
are rising while attendance is dropping.

this year we would really like to make an extra effort to boost
membership. Our VP of Membership, Ann McCandliss,
has been working tirelessly to make the membership process
go smoothly, and we are planning to produce a promotional
pamphlet (nothing fancy) to promote our organization. One
of the ideas raised at the Summit was to contact colleagues
who are not currently members and explain the benefits
of membership. If each one of you can reach out to a few
people, it will help to preserve MSMTA’s future.
Also, as you can see in this newsletter, your conference
committee has put together a fantastic program for our
upcoming conference in January. This year, we have included
a great lineup for our string teachers. Detailed information
will soon be available on our website. I hope to see many of
you at this year’s conference!
Last, but not least, congratulations to Prince George’s
County Music Teachers Association on its 50th anniversary!
PGMTA is the first local chapter in Maryland to celebrate
this monumental anniversary and will be commemorating
this achievement at our conference.

– It takes years for a young musician to get to the point where he knows what he wants to hear,
recognizes what needs attention, can identify options for how to make improvements, makes a
plan to address the issues, and then practices intelligently until progress is made. Though this
long road has ups and downs, we can help guide our students towards eventual independent
practice from the very first lessons. I will highlight various stages of this transition with
specific practice techniques for elementary to advanced level students.

2012/2013 “William J. McCormick, Jr. Educator Grants for Piano
Teachers and Students”
Please watch your inboxes around November 1st for the online application form for this year’s Jordan Kitt’s grants, presented in
memory of William McCormick, the former owner of Jordan Kitt’s. There will be four grants of $400.00 each awarded to piano
teachers for their further education or for one of their deserving students. (Please note that the entry forms MUST be filled
out by the teacher and not the student or a parent.) The grants are available to anyone who is a member of MSMTA, regardless
of where they live. As part of the online application, each teacher who submits an application will have the option to answer
anonymously several questions about how Jordan Kitt’s can better service the MTA, how their studios are set up, etc. Kitt’s will
use this information internally, only for market research purposes. Local Association Presidents should make sure their members
without email receive copies of the grant application.
The deadline for applying is Friday, December 14, 2012, with the presentation to occur at the MSMTA Annual Conference at
the University of Maryland on the evening of January 12, 2013.

2012-2013 Theory Program
It is my privilege to serve as the new Theory Program
Chair and Registrar for the upcoming year. I wanted
to take this opportunity to mention a few things about
the Theory Program.
First, it seems that there might be a few old syllabi
floating around. Please be sure you are using the
MSMTA Guide to Comprehensive Musicianship,
2001-2002 (aka Theory Syllabus) in preparing your
students for the exam. If you do not have a copy,
please see the Theory Materials Ordering form in the
Student Activities Handbook. The first copy is free
to all MSMTA members. While this document has
everything you will need to prepare your students, I
would like to mention that two things we no longer test
on in ear training are instrument identification in the
lower levels and specific piece identification in the upper
levels. We are currently reviewing the syllabus to reflect
these current changes but for now, please just disregard
those two items when preparing your students.
Second, please note that online registration is now
available and is preferred. Although there is not an
extra fee this year for paper registration, I would really
encourage teachers to use the online registration as
you can have absolute control over the accuracy of
the information entered. Keep in mind over 1,700
students took the exam last year and that’s quite a
bit of information to handle, so online registration
will increase the chances that all your information is
accurate.
Third, please be sure to read the rules on page 4 of
the MSMTA Guide to Comprehensive Musicianship,
2001-2002 as well as the rules on all the information
and application pages for the Theory Program.
Deadlines will be strictly enforced. Please note also a
clarification on the Transfer Form that students may
transfer to centers only whose deadline is on or after
the deadline of the original center for which they were
registered.
Lastly, with regard to materials ordering, please note
that the sample tests offered are the same as the ones
from last year, the 2009 edition. So if you ordered
them last year, no need to order again! However, one
thing many teachers have requested are ear training
CDs and we have made those available this year for a
cost of $5 per level. We currently have Levels 1-7 and
9 available and I am working to try and make the other
levels available soon.

2012 HIGH SCHOOL PIANO EXAMINATIONS
FOR SCHOOL RECOGNITION/CREDIT
MSMTA FINAL REPORT

The High School Piano Examination Program for School
Recognition/Credit was designed to encourage high school
piano students, offer them an incentive to continue studying
and give them the recognition they deserve through their
school. This connectedness with the schools is a unique
way that private teachers and school professionals can work
together to promote this important aspect of our students’
learning. This is the 33rd year that the auditions have been
held in April and May.
The co-chairs would like to thank MSMTA and all the
members who have supported this program since its
inception in 1979. Along with then MSMTA president, Dr.
Gail McDonald, and a committee, Ann Matteson started the
High School Piano Examinations in the school year of 19791980 and she has been working with the program ever since.
Ellen Sakai has also worked with the program for many, many
years as have a number of the Center Chairs. In this school
year 2012-2013, Deborah White-Bondhus has taken over as
the chair of the program with Ann and Ellen serving as her
co-chairs for this coming year. Deborah has not only entered
students in the Piano Exams for many years, but has often
served as a judge.
The following statistics are based on the number of people
who enrolled to take the examinations in 2012. There are
usually about 5-6 % of the students who elect not to take the
exam after they have enrolled.
Of the total of 245 students who applied to take the High
School Examinations in 2012:
230 applied to take the examination for recognition
15 applied to take the examination for credit
59 were in the 9th grade
73 were in the 10th grade
87 were in the 11th grade
26 were in the 12th grade
20 entered at the Intermediate I Level
49 entered at the Intermediate II Level
164 entered at the Advanced I Level
12 entered at the Advanced II Level
77 different high schools were represented by students
18 students were home-schooled
81 different piano teachers were represented.

COMPOSER’S COMPOSITION/
IMPROVISATION CIRCLE
Teachers!! It will soon be time for you to send in the
application recital forms for your students’ compositions and
improvisations for the Composers/Improvisation Circle. This
recital will be performed at the 2013 MSMTA Conference
held at the University of Maryland in the afternoon on Sunday,
January 13. It will feature compositions or improvisations
that students have created. This concert is a wonderful way
for students to showcase their creative talents. There are some
changes for the event which are printed in the Student Activity
Handbook www.msmta.org. Please be sure you review the
application form and information sheet carefully and use
the 2012-13 application form. Teachers will only be able to
submit two student compositions/improvs this year since we
have a Commissioned Composition, Vistas of Rome, written by
Andrew Simpson, who teaches music at the Catholic University
of America. He has written a piece for cello and piano which will
be approximately 12 minutes long and it is a real opportunity
for students to hear a professional composition premiered.
Student compositions will be printed in a Composers Circle
Booklet which is given to each composition student and the
participating teacher and all performers receive a certificate.
One of the changes is that there will be no CD’s, recordings,
etc. used during the performance without permission of the
chairs. Another change is that improvisation students need
to turn in a brief description (keys, title, etc.) of the plan of
their improvisation. The improv is not a memorized piece
but should be created as the student plays. There is a 3 minute
limit for improvisations.
It is amazing how creative students can be and this is always a
delightful recital of original works.

clues throughout the recitals, performing some of the music,
and awarding a prize to those who guess the “mystery
musician”. We have included pictures from two years ago,
which shows several members in costume, as well as the
chair who represented Antonio Vivaldi, and “attempted” to
play the violin until she was rescued by audience members
who COULD play the violin!!!! Our December Ensemble
MTAB began the fall season with its first bi-monthly meeting
on September 12 at Belcroft Bible Church in Bowie. At
the President’s suggestion, the Board voted to reduce the
number of monthly meetings from eight to five, and so,
general meetings will take place in Sept, Nov, Feb, March
and May, with board meetings held in October, January and
April. The program in September included an Ensemble
presentation with some piano duets and a vocal solo,
followed by the Mirabella Competition repertoire presented
by Mirabella Chair, Jeannine Case, as well as Maxine Russell,
Elizabeth White, Katya Merchant and Janet Swaney. Our
next bi-monthly meeting will be held on November 7 and
the program will feature Improvisations by Ray Hobbs and
chamber music with members Elizabeth White and Sharon
Winton, plus a guest violinist from Riderwood.

Saturday, December 8 at Cresthill Baptist Church in Bowie

Our annual Halloween Musicale will be presented on
Saturday, October 27 at the Church of the Redeemer in
Bowie, which replaces the usual location which suffered
a partial fire in September. Chair Jeannine Case will again
dress as a composer or other well known musician, giving
As an alumni of the University of Maryland School of Music,
for years I have attended many events during the Kapell
International Piano Competition. This year I was fortunate
to attend twelve events, including Santiago Rodriguez’ solo
piano recital (magnificent!!), an all-Beethoven recital given
by Anton Kuerti, the Fleisher Masterclass, a piano physics
lecture, three preliminary rounds, two semi-final rounds
and one chamber round, plus the exciting, sold-out finals
with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. All three finalists
were young Asian men and any one of the three could have
been chosen the 1st place winner, because each spectacularly
performed the Brahms B flat Concerto, the Rachmaninoff
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and the Rachmaninoff
3rd Concerto in D minor. The audience, myself and the
judges all chose the SAME 1ST PLACE WINNER, Yekwon
Sunwoo!!!!!!!

In the great tradition of the Schubertiades hosted by Franz
Schubert and his friends, we kicked off our year with a Soirée
hosted by member Ellen Winner. Teachers and their guests
shared a wonderful time of food, friendship, and music with
performances by several members.
Teachers and students are excitedly preparing for the popular
Fall at the Mall Music Marathon at Westfield Shopping Center
Annapolis Mall, which will take place on November 17.
Our Holiday Recital is scheduled for December 15. Many
AAMTA members are looking forward to getting together
with other MSMTA members at the conference in January!
Beginning this year, students can accumulate points toward
a medal for well prepared participation in events on the
AAMTA calendar, including MSMTA events. Students
must demonstrate preparedness for the event by submitting
favorable adjudication forms or, if an event is not adjudicated,
verification by the chairperson that the student was well
prepared. Students participating successfully in five events
over the course of no more than two consecutive years will
receive a medal from AAMTA.

Improvisation,
especially as it pertains to the MSMTA Keyboard Exam,
which we host in November. Ms. Dean shared fun ways
to stimulate creatively students and their imaginations to
produce musical test answers to questions posed on all levels
of the exam.
Our busy Fall will include a Masterclass & Recital, featuring
Cole Burger, on October 13, and Carols and Cookies on
December 1.

Our Broad Creek test piece committee presented the 2013
list, Ann Matteson and Linda Head playing the 4 duets,
and Linda Head ambitiously playing the entire list of solo

outstanding teaching material.

LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS
MCMTA held its first general membership meeting on
September 11th at our new location, Jordan Kitt’s Music
in Rockville, with a presentation by Nancy O’Neill Breth
entitled “Go Home and Practice.” We welcome all MSMTA
members to join us on the second Tuesday of the month at
Jordan Kitts. Please see our website for news on our meetings,

We have a full complement of student activities for the year
that will begin in October. Some of our first events for the
year will be a Judged Recital on October 14th at Piano Craft in
Gaithersburg and an Elementary “Autumn Carnival” Recital
on October 20th at Montgomery College. The following
month, MCMTA will hold the Junior, Intermediate, and
Senior Concerto Competitions on November 4th, 11th and
18th, respectively, at Jordan Kitt’s. The Montgomery County
center for the Keyboard Musicianship Exam will hold its
examinations on Sunday, November 18th at The Academy
of Fine Arts. Later in the year, we have some events planned
at the new Steinway Piano Gallery in North Bethesda. We
are very appreciative of all the fine venues that donate space
to house our events and encourage all MSMTA members to
support those businesses.

have been working behind the scenes this summer to plan

Music Teachers Association
The Greater Columbia Music Teachers’ Association has
for several years enjoyed rewarding our students for quality
participation in our local association festivals, recitals,
outreach recitals, competitions and high school examinations.
The points are passed on from year to year and there is no
time limit for receiving an award. The points used to achieve
the 30 point award are kept and added to for the 60 point
award, and likewise for the 100 point award.

The MTAGB is celebrating a milestone year in 2012-13. We
are 45 years young! Our organization was founded in 1967,
and if I’m not mistaken, that makes us the third “chapter”
to be formed within MSMTA (Prince George’s was founded
in 1963, Montgomery County in 1965). Our archives
show that our charter members intended us to be a source
of “enrichment and support for each other.” They felt that
students had ample growth opportunities; it was we teachers
who needed care!
Thanks to the dedication of local teachers and MSMTA,
that is even more true today. We have wonderful festivals,
competitions, and programs to develop excellence in
musicianship and theory. So – this year, MTAGB is focusing
on three areas to support our teachers:
COMMUNITY-BUILDING: We are strengthening
relationships by holding monthly in-home gatherings for the
purpose of making music together. So far we have had two
“Music Matinees,” at which we play for one another, share
teaching ideas, and explore repertoire. We are also planning
to read books together on piano and/or the musical life. In
September and October we’ve heard Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin,
Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, and Saint-Saens – and most of all,
we’ve had a great time just being together!
COMMUNICATIONS: We have resumed our bimonthly
newsletter and are about to release an updated member
directory.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: We held our first general
meeting on September 20th at the home of Pat Graham, with
an interactive program called “Judging with ‘Big Ears’: The
Art and Skill of Effective Judging.”

The Howard County Music Teachers Association had its first
meeting at the Music and Arts in Chatham Station, Ellicott
City, on September 6th. We were very happy to meet our
newest member, Wade Meyers, who came to us from northern
Virginia!
HCMTA’s student events start in October, with Sima Elkis
chairing our first student recital on October 20th. This is our
annual Oktoberfest Recital, with many students dressing up
in their Halloween finery! Olga Kuperstein is the chair of the
October 27th MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Exam center,
the first of two Howard County Keyboard centers..
GLMTA held its annual fall meeting in September, at the
studio of Wendy Dengler, with excellent attendance. Officers

music apps which are available, and we discussed how they
MSMTA is now accepting advertisements in its
