Lyle Umenhoffer describes terror of bombing,
sharks after sinking of USS Indianapolis
By Monique Weiland

If people are familiar with the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, it is usually
associated with the monologue by Quint (Robert Shaw) in the blockbuster movie
Jaws. Guests at the Blue Star Program’s June 5 semi-annual dinner at First Baptist Church gym, however, heard a first-person account of the event from former
Navy Seaman First Class Lyle Umenhoffer, one of the surviving crew members
of the USS Indianapolis in World War II. A Portland class heavy cruiser of the
United States Navy, her sinking on July 30, 1945, led to the greatest single loss of
life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Umenhoffer told about his personal experiences in World War II beginning with his graduation from Mark Kemple High School in 1942.

Las Tunas meeting draws big crowd
Temple City residents and business
owners were given an opportunity to
share their perspective on the Las Tunas design plan at a community meeting June 10, in City Council Chambers.
Updates on the Las Tunas Design
Plan were also presented, allowing residents and business owners to provide
feedback on the revised concept.
After City Manager Bryan Cook and
Community Development Director
Michael Forbes reviewed the project’s
history and current incarnation, Mayor
Tom Chavez and the City Council
heard public comment from 30 individuals who shared their perspective on
the current plan.
For more information, visit

Lutheran School is closing its doors. A closing out sale is planned
for 7 p.m., July 10-11. There are many games and other educational items that parents and children will want to see. All items
will be sold for 25 cents each. A celebration event was planned for June 27 in the
Parish Hall of First Lutheran Church to which friends and family of former students
and teachers were invited.

EASY project
offers free
energy advice
The San Gabriel Valley Council
of Governments (SGVCOG) recently partnered with CivicSpark,
a governor’s initiative to assist local governments in fighting the effects of climate change.
Four recent college graduates
are serving an AmeriCorps year of
service as CivicSpark members
working in the SGVCOG office.
The primary project these
CivicSpark members will be working on is called EASY (Energy Assessment Screening for Your
home). The EASY project provides
free home energy assessments to
residents of 16 cities in the San
Gabriel Valley.
CivicSpark members, trained in
building science and community
outreach, will be conducting the assessments.
The main goal of the EASY
project is to provide residents with
customized, non-partial recommendations on ways to reduce their
energy consumption, thereby lowering their utility bills.
In addition, CivicSpark members will provide explanatory information on utilizing the various rebates and financing options that
are available to aid residents in
completing their energy efficiency
upgrades.
CivicSpark’s EASY program is
funded through the San Gabriel
Valley Energy Wise Partnership
(SGVEWP), a partnership between Southern California Edison,
Southern California Gas Company, the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG),
and 29 other cities in the San
Gabriel Valley.
“EASY is an excellent program.
We are excited to engage the community in energy efficiency while
also helping them save money,”
said Denis Bertone, chair of
SGVCOG’s Energy, Environment,
and Natural Resources Committee.
“The EASY project is beneficial
for everyone. Residents save
money on their energy bills while
the community as a whole becomes more sustainable,” said
Francis Delach, executive director
of SGVCOG.
To schedule a free energy assessment, visit the EASY program Web
site at www.sgvenergywise.org.

Relay For Life of Temple City, July 11-12, includes NBC4 reporter,
breast cancer survivor Lolita Lopez as part of opening ceremonies
Temple City’s annual Relay
For Life benefiting the American
Cancer Society is set for July 1112. This year’s 24-hour public
event will be held at Temple City
High School’s track beginning at
9 a.m. July 11. “Relay For Life is
one of our community’s most
celebrated events,” said Mayor
Tom Chavez. “I’m so proud that
our residents come together
each year to raise money and
support those fighting cancer.”
The event will open with a
speech by NBC4 reporter and
breast cancer survivor Lolita
Lopez. That evening a luminaria
ceremony will be held to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors remember lost loved ones
and support people who currently have cancer.
The overnight fundraiser involves teams of people camping
out and taking turns walking or
running around a track. Cancer
survivors will participate in the
first lap while other activities
will recognize and celebrate
caregivers.
The event, one of 5,000 taking place across the U.S. each
year, also includes food, games
and entertainment for all ages.
Since 2012 Temple City’s Relay
For Life has raised more than
$130, 000 for cancer research
and prevention.
Thus far 24 teams and 152
participants have raised more
than $20, 000 for this year’s
event. To make a donation or
form a team to participate in
this year’s event, log onto
www.relayforlife.org/templecityca. For
more information phone Dawn
Tarin at 626-688-8009.
After the opening ceremonies
conclude, the first lap will celebrate cancer survivors. As the
survivors walk, other relay participants will cheer them on to
show their support. Ms. Lopez
will help lead the first lap.
Born in Santurce, Puerto
Rico, Ms. Lopez moved to the
United States with her family
when she was four years old.
She later graduated from
Harvard University in 1998,
where she participated on the
volleyball and track teams. After working for at WPIX-TV in
New York for 10 years, she
joined NBC4 in 2011.
A year and a half after joining NBC4, Lolita was diagnosed
with breast cancer. She chose to
make her story public to erase
some of the stigma many
women feel when faced with a
cancer diagnosis.
In a five-part series, she
shared the story of her treatment, including the loss of her
hair, chemotherapy, her double
mastectomy, and reconstruction.
Inspiring viewers and colleagues across Southern California, she continued to work as an
on-air reporter throughout her
treatment. Shortly after her diagnosis, she led a team that participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer event.
She continues to work with
Making Strides, which supports
breast cancer research, cancer
education, patient and caregiver
services, and advocates for qual-
ity care for all patients through
the American Cancer Society.
She continues to participate in
charity events in Southern California.

For Pete’s Sake –
Here comes summer
By Peter Choi
The late, great Janis Joplin sang “Summertime, time, time, Child, the living’s easy,” and
for the recently graduated Temple City High
School seniors this will certainly be a memorable one as they embark on their next chapter.
Speaking of embarkations, the deadline to
register for the Chamber’s “Discover China” trip
is August 1, so come join the fun bunch of folks
who have signed up already for this once-in-alifetime experience.
As we enjoy the lazy days of summer, it is
important to remember those brave Americans
whose heroism and sacrifice allow us the liberty and freedom many of us take for granted.
A big thanks to Chamber member Blue Star
Banner program for honoring Lyle Umenhoffer
and contributing his true life tale of service and
survival as a crew member of the USS Indianapolis.
This July 4 the rockets’ red glare of firecrackers bursting in midair gives proof through the
night that the heroism of the Greatest Generation will not be forgotten. (See a list of current
U.S. military from Temple City on Page 15.)
Closer to home I’d like to highlight the efforts of the many Temple City volunteers who
have been on the front lines of the fight against
cancer which culminates this month with the
annual Relay for Life. Learn how you can participate and help beat this disease which does
not discriminate against race or creed. Welcome
NBC4 reporter and breast cancer survivor Lolita
Lopez who will be in town July 11. See Page 3.
Bringing it back to the one and only Janis
Joplin, her life and music will be presented in
the Tony Award nominated “A Night With Janis
Joplin” featuring Mary Bridget Davies who
rockets through at least a dozen of Joplin’s bestknown songs. Through our partnership with
the Pasadena Playhouse, you can get a special
discount on tickets. See ad Page 19.
Finally, I’d like to thank our Managing Editor Philip Pettus who really outdid himself on
this expanded 20-page issue. Please shop local
and support our advertisers whose support help
us bring the above stories and information to
you each month.
On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce,
have a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Why it’s awesome being a dentist, Part II: what, me?
So I realize it’s not cool to
brag and hopefully I’ll avoid
breaking any written or unwritten local rules or regulations.
Back in January, I wrote a
piece titled “Why it’s Awesome
Being a Dentist.” I shared a story
about a patient who came in
and took a chance; investing
some significant time, money,
and trust. I’d never met anyone

We provided to Jessica the

Jessica stopped by for a brief

best of all, recorded a song Jessica surprisingly performed out

And I haven’t won a single

about a month ago something
amazing happened.
Jessica’s case was chosen as

Understanding estate planning basics
Many new clients first come
into my office saying they “want
a trust.”
What those clients don’t
know is that a trust is just one
of the four essential estate planning documents that most estate planning attorneys recommend to ensure all of the clients’
bases are covered.
Put simply, these four essential documents are:
Revocable Living Trust:
Moves your property into the
trust name to avoid probate
court and allows you to choose
your beneficiaries;
Pour-Over Will: Works with
the above trust to ensure all
property avoids probate;
Durable Power of Attorney:
Specifies who you would want
to make financial decisions for
you should you become incapacitated and what powers you
give to that person;
Advanced Health Care Directive: Specifies who you
would want to make medical
decisions for you should you

become incapacitated and what
powers that person has (e.g.,
Do you want to stay on life support? Do you want to donate
organs?).
In gathering information for
your first meeting with an attorney, I ask my new clients to
bring information on the following two aspects:
People: Who are your beneficiaries? Who do you want to
be in charge once you pass or if
you are incapacitated?
Things: Your assets. Please
bring a list of all accounts: account type, account number,
and institution information.
Clients should also bring
grant deeds or quitclaim deeds
for all real property owned.
Although estate planning is
by no means simple, with this
basic understanding of the estate planning documents and
what information is needed to
begin the process, you are now
far ahead of the average new
estate planning client.

New Member Spotlight
PrimeLending, offers multilingual mortgage expertise
A resident of Temple City for more
than a decade, Priscilla Chen is an expert in the mortgage business with years
of experience originating residential
home loans in the San Gabriel Valley.
Fluent in both Mandarin and
Cantonese, Ms. Chen is a multi-lingual
professional mortgage broker who recently joined PrimeLending, a
PlainsCapital Company.
Ms. Chen puts her knowledge and
skills to practice by helping homebuyers
and homeowners find the right options
for their mortgage needs. It may be for a
new purchase, a refinance to lower a
monthly payment or shorten the existing loan term, or a cash-out refinance to
upgrade an existing home, consolidate
debts, or help children get a college education.
“I enjoy helping people achieve their
financial needs and that is why I love
what I do,” said Ms. Chen. “I love seeing
happy customers and I am committed
Priscilla Chen, Senior Loan Originator
to take good care of them because I do
care how they feel at the end of the day.”
Certainly, Ms. Chen’s success is partially due to the huge demand in the region for multilingual professionals in
recent years, but underneath her language facility is a strong background in
all areas of mortgage lending, a dedication to customer satisfaction, and, perhaps most of all, a strong personal connection to Temple City and the San
Gabriel Valley.
Contact So Cal Termite Solutions for
dealing with termite problems
arising from California drought
An aspect of the drought
that is not well known is the
possibility of termite infestation. When there is heat followed by a little rain, it creates
prime conditions for subterranean termite swarmers.
Most subterranean termite
colonies produce swarmers by
the time they are five years old.
With El Niño conditions
predicted this year, it is a great
idea to schedule an inspection

“My team and I manage more than $1.3 billion of real estate
assets,” said Mr. Kusuma. “I have advised and counseled
homebuyers, sellers, and real estate investors from every walk of
life. CEOs, executives, and business owners hire my team because
their businesses are teams. Sales professionals and marketing oriented entrepreneurs hire my team because they quickly recognize
the superiority of our sophisticated system for selling homes as
quickly as possible for top dollars.
Doctors, hospital administrators, and nurses hire us because,
like the executives, they are thoroughly familiar with the benefits
of a team approach. Exceptionally busy couples hire us because my
home selling system features methods of marketing and selling
homes that minimizes their involvement and inconvenience.”

Training programs prepare youth for high school sports
By Coach Richard Marquis
Play Smarter Basketball
As a basketball coach who has worked with NBA
professionals, varsity athletes, and kids who just enjoy
the game, the No. 1 question I’m asked is how to help
your child get to the next level of their personal development.
In our Play Smarter Youth Basketball Development
Training Class program in Temple City, San Gabriel,
and Alhambra we get a lot of parents wanting to place
their boy or girl into one of our local classes as a seven
or eighth grader, in some cases with little or not enough
previous team training, because their child wants to try
out for their local junior or high school team.
Some years ago my son, Richard Jr., played for me on his
high school varsity basketball
team at El Monte’s Arroyo
High School. (I also raised a
couple of athletic daughters as
well.)
Today the game of basketball has grown and made some
big changes, making it much
harder to play on any of the
more competitive high school
teams in and around the San Coach Marquis
Gabriel Valley area. I was also the boys and girls high
school coach at Mark Keppel High School for several
years and as a coach I always felt really bad when we
had to cut the kids due to lack of proper previous training.
Here in the San Gabriel Valley region, there are several very good training or development programs that
can help boys and girls prepare for their junior and senior high school days of tryouts and the road ahead of
them in the sport of basketball.
The local Parks and Recreation and YMCA programs
are good places to begin, but when your child shows a
stronger interest in the sport around age 9 -11, find a
stronger development training program like our Play

Umenhoffer joined the U.S. Navy
and after 21 days of boot camp was
assigned to the USS Indianapolis.
As part of the crew, he saw action
in the Pacific theater including the
Aleutian Islands campaign, the invasion of the Gilbert islands, and the
Battle of the Philippine Sea.
The Indianapolis joined Vice Admiral Marc A. Mitscher’s fast carrier
task force attacking Tokyo to cover the landings
on Iwo Jima and Mr. Umenhoffer described surviving the bomb attack by a Japanese pilot on Easter Sunday morning.
The Japanese pilot dropped his bomb directly
on the ship’s deck, going through the deck, mess
hall, berthing compartment, and fuel tanks before
crashing through the keel and exploding in the
water underneath.
The concussion blew two gaping holes in the
keel which flooded nearby compartments and left
a hole the size of two Mac trucks. Under her own
power, she made it back to Mare Island for repairs
and was given a special assignment.
On 30 July 1945, after delivering parts for the
first atomic bomb to the United States air base at
Tinian, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by the
Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, sinking
in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, only 317
survived.
Mr. Umenhoffer recounted how, just after watch
on that night, around midnight, he went to the aft
of the ship to sleep. At 12:12 a.m., he heard and
felt the first explosion. He jumped up and put his
clothes on.
The first torpedo blew off the bow. The second
torpedo hit the ammunition and fuel on the port
side. As the fire spread to the front of the ship, Seaman Umenhoffer took his position on the side of
the ship to wait for orders.
Suddenly, the ship rolled to the starboard side,
throwing Umenhoffer across the deck. He hit a
hatch which tore up his leg and threw him into the
water.
Some 300 of the 1,196 crewmen went down with
the ship. Approximately 900 found themselves
adrift in the water with a fortunate few in life boats.
The ship sank in 12 minutes, spewing gallons
of toxic fuel into the sea and coating the men in
sticky, black goo. It was four hours before there was
any light to see what was going on. Once it was
light, the men started swimming towards each
other.
Then the alarm for sharks sounded.
The first night, the groups joined their floats
together to make a ring, putting the injured in the
middle to protect them from the sharks.
The second day was the beginning of hallucinations and great thirst.
Third day still no rescue. Like others adrift in
the ocean, Umenhoffer had formed a floating “pod”

with other survivors. Now they were down to 1012 in their group.
On the fourth day, still no rescue as more survivors were lost to hypothermia, dehydration, salt
poisoning and shark attacks, while some killed
themselves or other survivors in various states of
delirium and hallucinations.
On the fifth day, Lt. Wilbur Gwinn and copilot
Lt. Warren Colwell were on a routine patrol flight
in a PV-1 Ventura looking for submarine oil slicks
to identify where to drop the depth charges when
they spotted the men adrift and dropped a life raft
and a radio transmitter.
All air and surface units capable of rescue were
dispatched to the scene at once. A PBY Catalina
seaplane piloted by Lt. Adrian Marks responded.
While dropping rafts and supplies for three
hours, Marks witnessed men being attacked by
sharks and, disobeying standing orders, landed on
the open sea. He began taxiing to pick up the stragglers and lone swimmers who were at the greatest
risk of shark attack and radioed for immediate assistance.
Umenhoffer and two others in his “pod” were
passed by twice until they were finally pulled into
the plane and thrown into the back. Although the
plane was full, Lt. Marks instructed Umenhoffer
and other men to climb out the hatch and onto the
wings so he could pick up more men.
Umenhoffer recalled thinking this was crazy, but
he and the planeload of men successfully arrived
to the hospital ship, the USS Tranquility.
The Navy Command had no knowledge of the
Indianapolis’ sinking until the survivors were spotted. Of the 880 who survived the sinking, only 321
men came out of the water alive; 317 ultimately
survived. Marks and his crew rescued 58 of those
survivors. The Discovery Channel stated in Shark
Week episodes “Ocean of Fear” that the Indianapolis sinking resulted in the most shark attacks on
humans in history.
After his military service, Mr. Umenhoffer enjoyed a career in the Street Department, eventually
becoming a welder and heavy equipment operator
in the Pasadena area. He retired in 1986 after 40
years with the company. He has a daughter and
three grandsons. His wife passed away in August
three years ago.
During the meeting, a representative of the now
defunct Temple City Pony League association presented the Blue Star program a check for $2,000.

TEMPLE CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUYER’S GUIDE
Temple City schools make the grade
The Temple City Unified
School District is honored
to announce that all traditional schools in the District
have received 2014 California
Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) Honor Roll Star
School awards.
Cloverly
Elementary
School, Emperor Elementary
School, La Rosa Elementary
School, Longden Elementary
School, Oak Avenue Intermediate School, and Temple City High School are six
out of 1,851 California public schools that received this
prestigious distinction.
Emperor
Elementary
School and Oak Avenue Intermediate School also re-
ceived a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
(STEM) Honor Roll Award. Emperor and Oak focus on
subjects to help student gain
the skills required to succeed in today’s challenging
world, including the ability to
think critically, solve complex
problems, and drive advancements in science and technology.
“TCUSD students and
staff affirm that great successes are taking place in our
District,” said Superintendent Kathy Perini. This is a
testament to everyone’s hard
work and relentless focus on
student achievement and narrowing the achievement gap. TCUSD is committed to 21st
century academic excellence
for all students.”
Schools are recognized by
the business community for
consistent high student academic achievement and a significant reduction in achievement gaps among student
populations. Using data, CBEE identifies and honors the highest

Two pairs of Temple City sisters
wow America’s Got Talent
Four Temple City students – two pairs
of sisters – are members of the Los Angeles Children’s Orchestra that appeared
during the June 9 episode of NBC’s competition program, America’s Got Talent.
They are Isabella Realzola, who just
finished second grade at Longden, and
her sister Victoria Realzola, who recently
graduated from sixth grade at Cloverly
and sisters Ashley Mok (finished seventh
grade at Oak) and Kristen Mok (graduated sixth grade at Cloverly).
Led by Director Susan Pascale, the
orchestra brought the crowd to their feet
while receiving four “Yeses” and advanc-
ing to the second round.
Judge Howard Stern said, “It warms
my heart when this generation starts to
learn the music of the Beatles, so important, so influential.”
“Kids, you should be very proud of
yourselves!” said judge Heidi Klum following the bravura performance of the
Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby by the Los Angeles Children’s Orchestra during the June
9 episode of NBC’s competition program “America’s Got Talent.”
Isabella is no stranger to public appearances, having been selected as a Camellia Festival Princess in 2014.

Smarter Program, the outstanding SGV
Youth Program or the Impact League and
Training Programs.
Other very good programs include
Coach Sid Cooke’s Renaissance Academy
and the Brotherhood Youth Program in
the Pasadena area. Two other local recommended programs in the Monterey
Park/Alhambra area are the Monterey
Park Sports Club and the very good program run by Coach Joe Kikuchi, Head
Girls Varsity Coach at Mark Keppel High
School.
These are a few of our local area training programs, but there are many more
programs that can help prepare and improve your child’s opportunity of playing
at the next or higher school levels and
perhaps beyond.
For more information about the Play
Smarter Basketball program, visit
www.playsmarterclasses.com or phone
Coach Richard Marquis at 626-482-8267.
