The Centenarian 1 C VIeW FrOM THe DoMe Serving Others, Close to Home For seven years, Centenarians traveled hundreds of miles each January to help communities devastated by hurricanes on Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. When Hurricane Sandy leveled the Jersey shore and other parts of the region in october 2012, lessons learned from Centenary’s Annual Disaster Relief Project provided help to those affected by the natural disaster. Taking Care of the Community In northwestern New Jersey thousands found themselves in the dark and without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Trinity United Methodist Church responded by providing emergency shelter, Internet service, and keeping the Lord’s Pantry open for people who needed food. Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Frank Fowler, a member of the Centenary College Board of Trustees, also reported that approximately 1,000 “Flood Buckets” were collected and distributed to the Jersey Shore to provide essential cleaning supplies. 2 The Centenarian restore the Shore Shannon L. Colditz ’06 had to do something. Though the Centenary alumna does not have friends or family on the Jersey Shore, Shannon L. Colditz ’06 watching the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy prompted her to take charge. Colditz organized “Restore the Jersey Shore” and offered her Hackettstown home as a donation drop-off center. Word spread quickly. Two days after announcing the effort on a local radio station, volunteers, including many from Centenary College, filled four trucks with non-perishable items and supplies and a convoy of volunteers headed to Brick Township and Point Pleasant, N.J. “People were showing up asking how they could help and what they could go buy,” Colditz told WRNJ Radio. “It was simply amazing!” WrnJ radio Before, during and after Hurricane Sandy, WRNJ Radio, Hackettstown’s local radio station, was a constant source of information and news. The station not only kept residents informed, but also promoted relief efforts using the airwaves, its Twitter feed and continual website updates. WRNJ Radio’s President and General Manager is Norman Worth, who served on the Centenary College Board of Trustees from 1993–97 and 2003–present. He was honored with a Gold Dome award at the 2012 Centenary College Scholarship Gala last June. Hip Hop Has Heart Foundation Prospective students and their families attended Centenary’s Open House on November 10, 2012, which made it the perfect occasion to collect canned goods and bottled water for those displaced by Hurricane Sandy. The effort was sponsored by Centenary, Hot 97 radio station and the Hip Hop Has Heart Foundation. Items collected during the Open House were distributed to area shelters by the Foundation, which was founded in 1994 by Hot 97 radio station to respond to community needs. The Foundation has raised more than $1 million, participating with organizations such as the Chancellor’s Literacy Program, the United Negro College Fund, Walk to Cure Diabetes, Safe Horizon, September 11th Fund and AIDS Walk New York. Left: Community Plunge 2012 volunteers. Learning to Make a Difference Academic year begins with Community Plunge Donning navy blue T-shirts, more than 260 Centenarians kicked off the academic year on August 27, 2012, by clearing brush and weeds from a vacant Hackettstown lot, harvesting produce for local food pantries and volunteering for some of northwest New Jersey’s most vulnerable populations. It was Community Plunge, an annual rite-of-passage that introduces first year students to Centenary’s longstanding tradition of serving others. The daylong event, featured in The Star-Ledger, sent Centenary volunteers to 18 sites, including the Business Improvement District (BID) in downtown Hackettstown, the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack and the Antler Ridge Animal Sanctuary in Newton. A requirement for all first year students, Community Plunge is one of the College’s many service initiatives that challenge Centenarians to put ideals into concrete action. Through Midnight Run, a program that delivers food and supplies to New York City’s homeless, “Ethiopia Reads,” an international literacy project brought to the campus by the late Professor Emeritus Robert T. Quade ’96 HA that the Athletic Department continues in his memory, and other volunteer projects, the College community donates more than 21,000 service hours each year. The depth and variety of these efforts spurred the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the U.S. Department of Education to name Centenary to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in 2012. Scholarships Help Students Complete Degrees Centenary College and the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Northern New Jersey partnered to create a new scholarship designed to assist female, non-traditional students who have graduated from Warren County Community College. Instituted in Fall 2012 with $5,000 from United Way and a $5,000 match from Centenary, the first recipients are Tracy Kosar ’14, a Sociology major with a concentration in Criminal Justice, and Christina Chmielewski ’14, a double major in Accounting and Mathematics who plans to The literacy project “Ethiopia Reads” was near and dear to the late Professor Emeritus robert t. The team was named one of the top five viewing parties nationally, and the NASCAR evaluator’s summation of the event included this high praise for the Centenarians: “I was blown away by this entry — awesome job by this team!” “The team really thought out of the box,” said David Perricone, Assistant Professor of Sports Management and team advisor. Most events are held at bars, he said, but the team wanted to tie the event to Halloween with pumping picking, painting the pumpkins to look like cars, and sack races. NASCAR Kinetics, begun in 2009, gives college students the opportunity to work on business challenges in the motorsports industry. Centenary is among “This program is great. Students walk away with an enhanced understanding of the fundamentals of sports management. They’re not making things up. They work on real problems,” said Professor Perricone. the Bard Behind Bars Founder of acclaimed program opens Gates-Ferry Distinguished Lectureships In Richard II, Shakespeare wrote, “I have been studying how I may compare the prison where I live unto the world.” Curt L. Tofteland, a Gates-Ferry Distinguished Lecturer at Centenary College, brings the world to prison inmates with his groundbreaking Curt L. Tofteland program Shakespeare Behind Bars (SBB). SBB uses the works of William Shakespeare in prisons to help inmates develop life skills for successful integration into society. The first events in the 2012–2013 Gates-Ferry Distinguished Visiting Lectureship were a September 5 screening of a documentary about the program, followed by classes held by Tofteland. The Gates-Ferry Distinguished Visiting Lectureship at Centenary College recognizes the dedication to the College of Joseph R. Ferry, Trustee from 1948 to 1976 and treasurer of the Board of Trustees for 20 years. Each year, the series inspires members of the College community and beyond, and enriches intellectual and academic life on the Centenary campus. This spring, Elizabeth Holtzman, former four-term member from the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 16th District, will serve as Gates-Ferry Distinguished Lecturer. 4 The Centenarian challenges conventional notions of identity. The collection of poems has garnered critical praise from the literary world. “If you ever secretly wished that Kafka had been an optimist,” said novelist Téa Obreht, “[Jared Hamel] is the poet for you.” robert Klein Opens new Season of Performances The Centenary Stage Company opened its 2012– 2013 season with huge laughs when venerable stand-up comedian Robert Klein took the stage of the Sitnik Theater in the David and Carol Lackland Center on September 22, 2012. After the performance, Klein graciously posed for photos with local dignitaries, including Hackettstown Mayor Maria DiGiovanni (pictured above). Building on the College’s established record of innovation in higher education, the programs equip students with skills and knowledge the 21st century economy demands. 6 The Centenarian L ike many in his generation, Ken Cadematori ’13 is deeply concerned about climate change. Soon to be one of the first to graduate from Centenary College with the new Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, he believes the specialized degree provides the knowledge and skills that one day may enable him to help a company become “greener,” and perhaps mitigate the effects of global warming. The College’s proximity to natural resources is also a major advantage for environmental study. “We definitely get a lot of hands-on experience,” Cadematori said. “We took samples from the Musconetcong River, and examined them to identify different species. We’ve been to the fish hatchery, and to a bird sanctuary. There’s just so much you can do.” Meeting emerging needs in the Knowledge economy As the American economy has changed, so has Centenary. The starting point for the creation of relevant academic programs with direct application to the 21st century economy was the recognition of emerging needs. In the case of Centenary’s new Environmental Science major, it was the ever-growing number of students opting to pursue the existing Environmental Science minor. According to Environmental Service Director and Assistant Professor of Biology Lauren Bergey, Ph.D., “Environmental science is such a huge field that we attract more than just science students.” Dr. Bergey also noted ongoing community concerns about environmental sustainability and the legacy of past pollution. “Anybody who lives in New Jersey and has a degree in Environmental Science pretty much doesn’t have to worry about a job. We thought if we provided Biology students with a high level of technical knowledge on environmental issues, they would be leading candidates for positions in education, research, conservation, policy and land use management,” she said. The Environmental Science major stresses the interdependence of all species, with a particular emphasis on environmental quality, land stewardship, human health and the impact of local actions on the global community. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of environmental scientists is expected to increase 25 percent between 2006 and 2016, significantly faster than most occupations. Management Information Services, Inc., estimates that by 2030 more than 17 percent of all anticipated employment in the United States will be associated with “green collar” jobs. So the teachers who are completing the program will be leaders in their schools in terms of literacy.” Assistant Professor of education Frances Congdon new Jersey’s Changing Schools The new Master of Education in Reading, also offered for the first time in Fall 2012, grew out of changes taking place in New Jersey schools. Assistant Professor of Education Frances Congdon said an advisory board of principals, superintendents and former teachers were instrumental in shaping the new graduate program. “They kept telling us that teachers would really appreciate it if Centenary started a program like this. Classroom teachers are certified, but they like to go beyond that and get a master’s degree in an area that would enrich what they do in the classroom,” she said. The program prepares graduates to work with students from kindergarten to grade 12, supporting Early Literacy programs right up through high school. “We based our program on addressing the new Common Core Standards,” Professor Congdon continued. “So the teachers who are completing the program will be leaders in their schools in terms of literacy, and in meeting the Common Core Standards.” Degrees that Open Doors A competitive American economy requires highly responsive degree programs. Centenary College’s School of Professional Studies (SPS) continues its entrepreneurial approach to education with programs that advance the careers of busy professionals. Offering associate, bachelor’s and 8 The Centenarian master’s degrees in an accelerated and convenient format, SPS introduced the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a concentration in Organizational Studies this past August. Deirdre Letson, Ph.D., Vice President for Enrollment Management and the School of Professional Studies, called it “a degree that opens doors.” “A Sociology degree allows a person to get into a variety of fields, including business, human resources management and nonprofit organizations,” Dr. Letson explained. “The focus on Organizational Studies adds a piece that is typically found in a business program. It prepares people for everything from a nonprofit to a Fortune 500 company, combining much of what is needed in the workforce today.” The new degree program also follows the hallmarks of an SPS education. Taught by instructors who emphasize real-world applications of learning, the curriculum combines theory and practical experience. Students immediately apply knowledge acquired through the program to their current professional activities. Students also select the instructional method that best fits their often-hectic schedule. Some courses take place in a traditional classroom, others are offered online, while a number use a blended approach that incorporates both. The Master of Education in Reading is also a blended program. In many courses, students come to campus one week, then join an online thinkers and Leaders discussion the following week. Professor Congdon sees this as an especially effective combination. “They like the face-to-face interaction they get in the classroom with the professors, but it is so much nicer not to have to come every week because they all are full-time teachers,” she said. Teachers can also earn supervisory certificates that allow them to go into classrooms and supervise or evaluate colleagues. “There is a growing need for supervisors, given the number of evaluations most districts now require,” observed Professor Congdon. “There aren’t enough administrators. Graduates of our program can fill this need, and they are already in local school districts.” Centenary educators note that the introduction of the supervisory certificates is especially timely. In November 2012, Newark public school teachers ratified a tentative agreement that would make the district the first in New Jersey to grant performance pay and allow educators to review one another. Education leaders throughout the State have called the new teacher’s contract “groundbreaking.” “Allowing educators to review one another is a very valuable tool, and a way of creating a collaborative environment. Teachers who have earned a Master of Education in Reading at Centenary will have both the preparation and certification required to fully participate in this process,” Professor Congdon said. Partnerships in Learning In the last decade, Centenary’s academic programs have been enriched by strong partnerships with industry, government agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the region and state. Dr. Bergey noted that expansion of the Environmental Science program has strengthened the College’s ongoing relationship with the Charles O. Hayford State Fish Hatchery, located just down the street from the Hackettstown campus. The partnership with the fish hatchery is another way Centenary students can get crucial experience, while at the same time performing valuable research and experiments. “We were sending more and more students down there for internships, as well as helping them out during their busy season,” Dr. Bergey said. “Out of that came the idea of a partnership between Centenary and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through the Hayford Hatchery. We realized that by creating an environmental major in conjunction with the partnership at the Hatchery, we would be able to create a unique opportunity for students to get hands-on, experiential learning right in the middle of nature.” The introduction of new academic programs, combined with flexible degree programs and hands-on learning opportunities, has Centenary at the center of academic innovation. Dr. Letson believes the College has not only changed with the times, but is ahead of the curve, putting it out in front of other, larger institutions. “I think one of the reasons we are able to do this is because we are smaller. Within a small organization, it is easier to affect change, easier to innovate.” Centenary College welcomed 11 new faculty members who are thinkers and leaders in their fields of expertise for the 2012–2013 academic year. The addition of these highly credentialed scholars places Centenary in an even stronger position to enhance current academic programs and introduce relevant curricula that prepare students to become leaders in the 21st century knowledge economy. Through its generous support of The Campaign for Centenary College, the Foundation has provided thousands of Centenarians with an outstanding college experience. Projects funded all or in part by the Reeves Foundation include: • Restoration of the Edward W. Seay Building • Construction of the new indoor riding arena at the College’s Equestrian Center • Renovation and expansion of the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center • Construction of the David and Carol Lackland Center 10 The Centenarian Up for a Challenge Centenary student-athletes are resilient when it comes to competition. Recognizing the Cyclones’ commitment to excellence, the Reeves Foundation has announced support for a fundraising challenge that will bring a critical capital improvement closer to reality, and propel Centenary Athletics to a new level of play. I t looked like the season was about to come to an end. The Cyclones were trailing 1–0 in the 60th minute of a pivotal Men’s Soccer game against Gwynedd-Mercy. One minute later, everything changed. Joseph Backham ’14 netted two goals and the victorious Cyclones were on their way to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament. The come-from-behind victory is just one example of Cyclone resilience. Women’s Soccer ended its season 6–4–1 in CSAC play and earned the sixth seed in the CSAC Tournament, though it fell to Neumann University in the first round. The season will be remembered for the eight players who were named 2012 All-Conference members by CSAC. “Centenary student-athletes and coaches are tireless when it comes to preparing for competition,” said Director of Athletics Billie Jo Blackwell ’97/09. “We also recognize opportunities when they present themselves, then take advantage of them.” The dedication and drive demonstrated by Centenary teams has garnered critical support from a longtime friend of the College. The Reeves Foundation has issued a fundraising challenge to the Centenary community and will donate $450,000 over a fouryear period, contingent upon the College raising $950,000 for the Athletic Turf Field Project. Part of The Cyclone Athletic Fund, the project involves the construction of a new artificial turf field that will be used by the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams, provide greater recreational opportunities and enhance facilities that will make Centenary an even more attractive choice for the best and brightest scholar-athletes. “Completing this project has a direct impact on dedicated student-athletes who strive to be the best — in the classroom and on the field,” said Diane Finnan, Senior Vice President for College Relations. “Gifts of all sizes will help us meet the Reeves Challenge and move Centenary Athletics to the next level.” To make a contribution to the Athletic Turf Field Project, call (908) 852-1400, ext. 2336, or e-mail [email protected]. The Equestrian Team was honored for its outstanding performance under great duress at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) national championships in 1979. The evening before the championships, team coach Ralph Gillis died suddenly. The team rode in the coach’s honor and captured the National Hunt Seat Title, a feat not repeated again until 2009. The Brotherton Team, a squad of 14 seniors, enjoyed an undefeated season when the College was Centenary College for Women. The team defeated Lotte Hall and North and won the Inter-Dorm Championships in 1957. The season also included a win over the men of Alpha Delta House from Lafayette. Golf Outing raises Funds for athletic turf Field Project More than 65 golfers took to the links on October 12, 2012 for the fifth annual Cyclone Golf Outing at Panther Valley Golf & Country Club in Allamuchy, N.J. In August, Chester Cheetah, the brand spokescat for Cheetos, named the Centenary Cyclone to the Top 25 Cheesiest Mascots in America list. Weighing in at No. 17, the Cyclone finished ahead of MIT’s Tim the Beaver (No. 21) and a few places behind Carnegie Mellon’s Scotty, the Scottish Terrier (No. 8). The Centenarian 11 C PreSIDent’S RePoRT A natural disaster like a hurricane opens everyone’s eyes. But until Sandy, such extreme need always seemed far away — in the Gulf states, in Ethiopia. Sandy’s challenges touched us where we live. Hurricane Sandy has made the abstract idea of “disaster” concrete for so many of us. No longer can we say, “It will not happen here.” Your gifts are not only used for constructing buildings and implementing technology. When you give, you make available to our students the knowledge and skills that will enable them to make their own contribution in the world. It is personal, and it happens right here. This year, the College issued its lowest tuition increase in more than a decade as part of an effort to alleviate financial strain on students and their families. In addition, we continue careful budget analysis. We recently raised more than $100,000 at our annual Scholarship Gala to Dear Alumni and Friends of Centenary College, benefit our students. These and other innovative measures In 2009, when I was named President of Centenary, I support our students and maintain the affordability of a knew that I would be leading an institution that considered Centenary education. community service a key element of higher education. Yet we are not able to entirely fulfill our mission without Centenary was the first college in New Jersey to require help from you. As friends and community members, you students to perform community service, and over the may have seen Centenary volunteers working on Sandy years, I have watched with pride as our students took their relief efforts. As alumni you may have thought about giving hearts and minds into the world to help others — from the back to your alma mater. Now you have a chance to make annual Disaster Relief Project that rebuilt communities on your thoughts concrete with a gift to Centenary College. Louisiana’s Gulf Coast — to Ethiopia Reads projects — to local efforts like the restoration of the Back Barn at the College’s Equestrian Center. In 2012, Centenary College was selected to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Thanks to you and your support, Centenary will continue its mission of community service as a pillar of its educational experience. Sincerely, Roll for the depth and breadth of service performed by students, faculty and staff each academic year. Who knew that later this year, we would be called upon to take the lessons we learned from helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina and use them in our own state and region, to assist our own neighbors, friends and family? 12 The Centenarian Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite President, Centenary College Honor roll of Donors July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012 Centenary’s continued success is made possible through the generous support of the individuals and organizations listed in this report. Scattergood ‘61 Larry and Barbara Sceurman Norma Hoefgen Schadt ‘53 Margret Schaefer Roger Schafer Carol Bryant Scheese ‘01 Carole Witham Schmutzler ‘64 Leslie Daniels Schneid ‘71 Dan Schneider Candace Schober ‘12 One enchanted evening Two great organizations, Enchanted Makeovers and Centenary College, came together for one tremendous benefit, the “She Is Me Event,” on August 11, 2012. The evening introduced many to the issues of homelessness among women and children, especially how the transformation of sterile shelters into warm and inviting living spaces can empower people in crisis. Above: The crowd enjoys the festive evening; ellen BaarsBanks ’93 speaking at the “She Is Me event.” “I feel so lucky and fortunate to be involved with two nonprofit organizations that are near and dear to my heart,” said Ellen Baars-Banks ’93, who orchestrated the event, held in the David and Carol Lackland Center. Baars-Banks is a Centenary Trustee and member of the President’s Circle, a group of alumni and friends who serve as advisors to the College president and ambassadors to the broader community. Two years ago, she became Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Enchanted Makeovers, a national nonprofit that organizes and sponsors makeovers of shelters and rescue missions throughout the country in order to inspire psychological and behavioral change. Many who volunteer or support Enchanted Makeovers find their own lives transformed when they put their hands and hearts into inspiring positive change at these vital community safety nets. That was certainly the case for Baars-Banks. A few years ago, she was asked to donate T-shirts produced by her company, Transformation Tees, to a fundraiser for a homeless shelter in Jersey City, N.J. It was there that Baars-Banks met Enchanted Makeovers founder Terry Grahl. “We talked for hours,” Baars-Banks recalled. Even after the event ended, “[Enchanted Makeovers] just got in my head. I was waking up at 3 a.m. thinking about it.” The Centenary alumna then put her 30 years of business experience to work for the organization in various roles, from grant writing and marketing to marshalling support for the organization in the form of volunteers, resources and donations. As a result, the good work of Enchanted Makeovers was recognized by Major League Baseball’s “All Stars Among Us” and named the AOL Cause of the Day in July 2012. The “She Is Me Event” was a chance to introduce the Michigan-based nonprofit to a New Jersey audience, many of whom are alumni and friends of Centenary College. Fifteen women from an area shelter also attended the event. In a world where people are increasingly divided into haves and have-nots, Enchanted Makeover’s mission, and events like “She Is Me,” are means to breaking down walls and bringing people together, Baars-Banks said. “We’re not so different,” she stated. “Going through a shelter makeover really changed me forever. There was such unity among the people working together, and to see the impact on the shelter before and after, you know it’s changing lives.” Where has Centenary taken you? Kennedy was in the White House, the former Soviet Union was stockpiling missiles in Cuba and gasoline cost 31 cents per gallon. The alumna was pleased and proud of the transformation of her alma mater when she returned for the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1962 during Homecoming & Alumni Weekend, October 12–14, 2012. “I knew the College I was going to visit was going to Valerie A. Wilson ’62 be very different than the one I attended,” said Wilson, a development professional who has held senior leadership positions with a host of nonprofit organizations for more than 30 years. “Intellectually and emotionally, how would I feel about that?” Wilson was not disappointed on either count. “There were certainly landmarks that resonated with my memory, and it was also exciting to see the new buildings. I was glad that previous administrations recognized that in order to survive, it was necessary to change and Centenary seems to have done it quite successfully.” Wilson certainly knows a lot about change. She served as vice president for development of Stevenson University, an institution of higher education that underwent a similar transformation as Centenary from two-year, women’s college to coeducational, baccalaureate and master’s degree granting university. Throughout a long and successful career, the Centenary alumna also worked in nonprofit environments that included the arts, health care, social service and historic preservation. Wilson is especially proud of the work she accomplished for the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she served as Director of Development. She credits a strong administrative team for a major fundraising campaign that increased the endowment, constructed new buildings and impacted students for generations to come. “It’s very gratifying work,” she said. “Through your collaborative work you’re able to leave a wonderful legacy.” With her many decades of experience working in higher education, Wilson admits she could be a tough critic returning to her own alma mater. “I think the College did a superb job with the Reunion. They made it such a meaningful experience for everyone who was there. I would also encourage people to come back and reconnect with classmates and the College,” she continued. “Even though Centenary has changed, I think they would be very proud. I’m so glad I made that decision.” The Centenarian 25 C alumni Giving by Class (cont.) Brian Criscuolo ’13 The Centenarian 31 C tHe LaSt WoRD Picturing Centenary History Professor of History and College Historian Dr. raymond Frey ’12 Ha pored through more than 200 pictures in the College archives for his recently published book, Centenary College, New Jersey. “A lot of people are walking around campus with the book open, trying to line up where things were. That’s really kind of neat.” Dr. Raymond Frey ’12 HA When did you decide to write a history of Centenary College? Actually, Arcadia Publishing came to me. They asked if I would be interested in writing the book. What guidance did you get from the publisher? They produce a college history series. All of their books are 125 pages, 18,000 words and about 200 pictures. They send you grids of where the pictures and the captions go. I made copies of the grids, pasted them to the walls of the school archives, and started to fill them in like a giant jigsaw puzzle. How did you decide what to include? There are maybe 5,000 photographs in the College archives housed in the Taylor Memorial Library. I looked for events, people and buildings that would represent an era. It was really the only way to be fair to everybody. After all, there are alumni looking at this, students, faculty and people who don’t know anything about Centenary. So I used a lot of symbolism in the book. Some of these pictures have never been seen before, and are extremely rare. What was your biggest surprise? From a personal standpoint, my biggest surprise was Robert Trevorrow, who was President here from 1917 until 1943. I admire him very much. I didn’t know much about him before. I found him to be a decent man, an interesting person and a scholar. I walked past Trevorrow Hall for 20 years Raymond Frey, Ph.D. ’12 HA 32 The Centenarian and never thought about the man. To learn about his life, for me, was a great joy and a great surprise. How did you feel when you had to leave a picture out? I almost felt guilty. The pictures kind of go back into oblivion. I got very emotional about it, at one point. The memory of these people, these images, are really all that’s left. In part, the story of Centenary is the story of Hackettstown, isn’t it? I made a conscious effort to remind people that without the Hackettstown community, Centenary would be somewhere else. In our times of need, the citizens would step up and help us. After the fire that decimated Centenary in 1899, they contributed money to rebuild. When the College was in hard times, they were always there for us. What kind of reactions has the book gotten? One comment I get is, ‘Boy, the College has really struggled over the years.’ It seems like every 20 years we were in a struggle for survival. The other thing that really pleased me is to hear people say, ‘I never realized how many good and dedicated people were here at Centenary, doing good things when they needed to be done.’ A lot of people are walking around the campus with the book open, trying to line up where things were. That’s really kind of neat. A leading scholar on New Jersey history, Dr. Raymond Frey ’12 HA has been a member of the Centenary College faculty since 1990. The author of two textbooks on the State, Dr. Frey is the recipient of numerous awards including the Governor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in History and Civics. Now that the College has grown, the role of the AAEB is growing, too. The organization started with small — but successful — fundraising efforts: selling silent auction baskets at the Scholarship Galas and an alumni pin. Enough has been raised to endow the Diane “DD” Silcocks ’54 Memorial Scholarship, which has awarded scholarships to one traditional and one School of Professional Studies (SPS) student at recent Homecoming & Alumni Weekends. But the Board is hoping to be able to offer more. “The College is really moving forward, really progressive,“ said Romanelli-Young, “We’ve seen so much growth. We want to be able to offer larger scholarships.“ The AAEB has also recently supported efforts to upgrade the archives at Taylor Memorial Library. The AAEB now makes connections with students even before they graduate, hosting an event after the commencement practice with refreshments and raffle prizes including laptops. “We want them to become more engaged, to come back and remember us.“ Also, the student members of the AAEB now must be recommended by a professor. “It’s a way for us to be more connected to life on the campus,“ added Romanelli-Young. Romanelli-Young chose to attend Centenary after visiting campus.“It’s one of those places you’re just drawn to,”she said. After graduation, she worked long hours and was not involved with her alma mater. When her daughter was born, she began to come to more College events, and was eventually asked to joined the AAEB. And after years of visiting Centenary, her daughter, Kaitlin Young ’16, is now a student. “Centenary is home,” Romanelli-Young concluded. Arden Davis Melick ’60/01 HA, Chairman Kenneth L.
