for the sake of the common good.
A culture is healthy if it emphasizes the
good of the family over the pleasure of the individual. It used to be against the law to commit adultery,
or to "Runn oft." The fact that America seems to
honor 'family values' but at the same time refuses to
condemn easy divorce, is a sign of confusion at best,
or as Peter Kreeft put it, cultural suicide.
A culture is healthy if it pursues more the
virtues of the soul over the virtues of the body. If a
man wins the Tour de France, but in the process
abandons his wife and kids, a healthy culture will be
more displeased than congratulatory.
A culture is healthy if it values all human
life, and protects those especially who cannot protect themselves, like the young, the old and the infirm.
What can we say about our culture? These
priorities are most strongly established as conscious
decisions. The best principles upon which these
decisions are made come from the Catholic faith.
For this reason, we can see that the basis of culture
is cult, or worship. We can also see that culture, as
a conscious decision, has nothing to do with where
we were born, or race, or color, or nationality.

Dear Parishioners,
In America, a reasonable conversation about race is
hardly possible. The good news is that we can talk
about culture. Culture is different from race, religion,
or nationality. While all these are connected, culture
can be addressed separately. It's hugely important.
Culture is something we are born into. Because of this, it might seem as if culture is acquired by
an individual through osmosis and held in the subconscious involuntarily. This is true, partially, but cultures also have broad overarching components which
are very much voluntary. It is these aspects that concern us today.
Cultures can be superior or inferior, higher or
lower, healthy or unhealthy. [Insert gasp here.] A
culture is healthy if it agrees with and supports the
natural priorities of a human person. These priorities
are determined by human nature and are not subject to
change in time or place. They are 'grave and constant.' Cultures don't have to be healthy. Just as an
individual can be voluntarily self-destructive, so too a
culture can encourage bad behavior.
If a culture honors the works of the mind,
more than the works of the body, this is an indication
of a healthy culture. Why? Because the mind is the
highest faculty of a human person. Currently in
America, while we still honor poet laureates and others who achieve intellectual heights, we pay the football coach much more than anybody. This is an indication of a culture with confused priorities. Similarly,
a culture is healthy if it emphasizes wisdom over the
mere accumulation of wealth. Working more can
produce more money; working less can allow for leisure time for the pursuit of wisdom. A healthy culture
values true leisure time from lower things and for
higher things. Similarly, a culture is healthy if it pursues the pleasure of the mind over the pleasure of the
senses, or mere spectacle. For instance, some Hollywood movies have a plot and character development,
many are impoverished with nothing but a series of
car chases and explosions.
If a culture honors the common good over the
