STUDIO HIRE AT A SPACE TO CREATE
Saturday 14th September, 2013
If we don’t get more people we will be shortening
the day to either a morning or afternoon session
only.
If you need more information or want to book your
most suitable time please email me or ring me asap
and I’ll pencil you in.
Venue is currently booked from 8am to 6pm and
we have a roster in $20 one hour slots with only
ONE photographer at a time. If you wish to bring a
friend with their camera gear, that is fine but the
initial booking will be for one photographer for one
hour.
Please also keep in mind... you must bring all you
own props as only the basics are provided.
PRE-STUDIO WORKSHOP

I have arranged a free “Get to Know the Studio”
Workshop to be held on the Tuesday evening
before the shoot. Here you can come along and see
what equipment is there and Romy will give you a
quick rundown on how to use it. This is where you
get comfortable with the venue and work out how
best to shoot your chosen subject. Romy is not at
the studio on the Saturday so this is a time for you
to pick her brains before the big day.

CAIRNS PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY ANNUAL COMPETITION RESULTS FOR 2012-2013
Well I’ve been your club competition secretary for twelve months now and I think I can say I have finally got
myself into a routine and the job is not quite as scary as it seemed at first. It can be a roller coaster ride at
times but handing out those beautiful crystal laser engraved trophies was the highlight of my year doing the
job. I would like to send a huge thank you to Chris at Imaage 3D Crystal ( www.imaage.com.au ) down in
Morrisset NSW. Nothing was a problem to him and the trophies arrived well packed and in plenty of time
for the presentation night.
It all happened so quickly on the night that I decided it would be easier to put up the top 6 places here in the
newsletter to show how the positions ended up.
Now keep in mind you get 10 points for honours and 6 points for a merit, awarded over the 10 monthly
competitions we have throughout the year.

open up your hard drive and start searching, you are allowed to enter any that were taken within the 2 years
prior to the date of the club night competition.

Panda (Wang Wang) about 20 feet off the ground. Thankfully had my little point and shoot with me at the
time.

WHALEWATCH

One of the great things about living in Cairns and being retired is that when a significant situation or event
occurs, you are in a position to take advantage of it - and so it was for my wife and myself just recently. After
seeing the double cover spread of Migaloo the white Humpback Whale in the Cairns Post on Thursday
August 8th, we decided to get out on the water again. We had seen humpbacks before in Hervey Bay and had
loved the experience, but had never seen them in Cairns. So the following day we went out on a half day tour
on Reef Magic Three, which is a fabulous and relatively new addition to the Reef Magic fleet. Despite having
a capacity of 350 people, there were only 150 on board on the day, which allowed for plenty of freedom along
their three levels.
The weather was picture perfect on the day and armed with a complimentary coffee and muffin, I was quite
happy just to enjoy the cruise. A whale sighting would just be a bonus! There was plenty of commentary and
whale information provided by the friendly crew, so time just “cruised” by on the way out. Pretty soon we
were in the “whale watching triangle”, so the relaxed atmosphere suddenly ratcheted up a notch. The

skipper gave constant feedback as to the situation through the PA system and told all the passengers to be on
360 degrees alert which created a buzz among the tourists which included many locals.
Then the cry goes out – “Breech at eleven o’clock!” – and where was yours truly – at four o’clock on the
opposite side. I might as well have been at six thirty! Anyway it was early days yet. And so it went on - for
almost two hours. We saw several whales but they were mainly smaller adolescent whales. The skipper did a
great job of getting near a sighted whale and then just drifting in the direction of the area the whale might
surface again. We were the only boat there.
The whales were always quite a distance away, so I was always maxed out on my Nikon 18-200mm lens. I
don’t have fast glass (3.5-5.6), but depth of field wasn’t really an issue, so I was able to shoot at 1000 th of a
second to minimise any movement (on my part) as there was plenty of available light. I used 200 ISO,
however I did have to jump up the ISO later when I put the polariser on. Most of the images here have been
cropped to some degree.
Shortly into the return journey, an announcement came over the speakers from the skipper who said that we
were altering course to look into a reported sighting of Migaloo in the channel, and if anyone needed to be
back on shore on time to catch a flight, to report to a crew member immediately. Fortunately no one did.
Now if there was a buzz on board before, this news brought on a sound reminiscent of a locust invasion!
All passengers and crew were on high alert, and after a short while comes a cry – “Migaloo at 12 o’clock!” –
and, you guessed it, I’m at 5.15! Anyway, the rock star humpback dived and surfaced several times, and just
seeing a white 17 metre fish in the water was an incredible sight. Everyone rotated their position so we all
got a look. After about 30 minutes the skipper reluctantly said we had to leave and we all gave Migaloo a
round of applause. The boat arrived back about an hour late at 1.30pm and Janelle and I headed off to a nice
lunch and a well earned glass of Sauv Blanc!
This is a great trip so get out there while the whales are about. Cost for Locals is $90 per person.

COLOR RUN - CAIRNS JULY 2013

What can I say? This was the happiest few hours to see so many people of Cairns, visitors from other cities
and overseas tourists joining in. From walkers to runners, little, not so little, tall, thin, not so thin - all joined
in to be part of the Happiest 5kms in the World. It truly was fun and Cairns was transformed in colour like
never before.
Apparently this event might return next year. If so, do make the effort to go and just be part of it. If not
photographing, then just letting your inner child have a blast. The images should tell their own story.

SEEK AND FIND

The weather did its usual trick, and what started out looking like a very wet and miserable day ended with a
fine day which all the photographers enjoyed. Due to the dismal start we all arrived with wet weather gear,
which also added to the baggage being carried. But umbrellas can provide some quite colourful subject
matter, and this certainly proved the case for at least a few of the members, with one even being buried in the
colourful things. The turn out was good with about 16 members showing up to test their observation and
interpretive skills on a testing circuit.
The day started at the edge of Centenary Lakes opposite Cominos House where we were given our directions
and sent on our way. The first couple of items didn’t really give much trouble but there was some congestion
of members which made it rather easy to find the answers. This was soon to change with some going their
own different ways quite rapidly, and the members then became more spread out. This ensured that their
efforts were more individual than a group effort.
The circuit continued across a bridge, which provided some perspective opportunites for members, and then
through to the Bamboo groves where everyone fended off the midges and mossies. Having successfully
traversed this, members were rewarded with a crossover to the Tanks precinct. The aftermath of the Art
Escape, which was held at the Tanks the week prior, provided some more interesting photography.
An opportunity to rest and recharge at the Wild Bean was enjoyed by most of the members, apart from the
few stragglers who didn’t really have the time to relax. The info centre was the location for a jelly bean hunt
and one photographer enjoyed the tasty morsel straight away, rather than keep it for later (as per the
instructions). She successfully wheedled another when advised of the error of her ways and produced it at
the end of the shoot.
The start of the second part of the hunt now meant that again there was opportunity for collaboration for
some of the more obscure clues, and you would be excused for believing that some had to feel their way
almost like the blind leading the blind (a reference to Q15 on the Seek and Find sheet!) We wended our way
past this signage and into the Gardens proper which provided the opportunity for some affection to be given
to the trees. There was a lot of tree hugging going on here.

The well designed cryptic clues provided some interesting locations, but not all the photographers were
correct in their interpretation. The garden maps were needed to correctly decipher them. Our members
again ended up quite spread out, and went round and round the gardens until all clues were deciphered.
Having completed the Gardens component, it was now time to head back towards the start, which meant
crossing back over the road to the lakes district and the mosquito rich areas. After some inspection of the lily
pads (not very good for stepping on) and locating some dragons on the wing, it was off through the forest
via the boardwalk.
On arrival, all the answers were checked and prizes were awarded. A select group was picked to
demonstrate that even after all the exertion so ably displayed, they still had the required wind to inflate a
bunch of balloons. I think it is safe to say that a long and enjoyable day was had by all.

CAIRNS PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY INC. COMPETITION
There are three Grades: Division 1, Division 2 and Creative
RULES 2012/2013
Division Two is for beginners and new members, however new members may use an existing Grade status gained from
a previous club membership.
Division One is for more advanced exhibitors; however a new member can elect to go straight to Division One, subject
to adjudication by the Executive Committee.
Creative is “Altered Reality” and is open to all members. The image must obviously display a change in natural colour,
form, shape or any combination of these three. The original image must be captured digitally by the entrant and must
only be altered by the maker with artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant.
Each month has a set subject. Each exhibitor may enter up to three images.
An entry fee of $2 (for up to three entries) is applicable to all divisions eligible (maximum of two per entrant).

Image Submissions
Any images submitted:
Must have been taken photographically within the last 2 years.
Must be the work of the Author – the one who clicks the button.
Must not use non–photographic elements such as graphics, text or clipart unless it is an integral part of a photographic image or in the Creative Division.
Projected (Digital) Images for Remote Judging
All projected images must be Digital in .jpg format.
File size must be no larger than 2MB

Where the orientation of a print may not be obvious, it should be marked on the back with an arrow on the lower right
corner.
Matting and borders are not accepted
Please take note of these rules as images will be disqualified that do not comply
Monthly Competition Awards
There are two types of awards as shown below:
Merit: "An image that is above average standard. It will demonstrate competence on the part of the photographer without warranting a higher award".
Honour: "This is the highest possible award and indicates that the image is of an exceptionally high standard and is free
of technical faults".
Any of the above awards are at the discretion of the Competition Judge/s and accrue points as follows:

Annual Point Score Awards
All points awarded in the Monthly Competitions accrue towards this competition. First, Second and Third place awards
in each division are presented at an end-of- year function.
Champion Image of the Year Competition
This is open to those members who have been awarded Honours within the current year. These members shall be asked
to enter up to two of their Honours winning images for “Champion Image”.
This competition will be adjudicated by a panel of three invited judges where a winner will be decided.
