Here’s one I made earlier
Making your own knife is a
growing hobby for many shooters
and outdoor enthusiasts and the
new blade available from
Casstrom results from
collaboration between the Gunnar
Bergstrom and Casstrom,
designed for the British market.
This flat Scandi ground blade is
forged and hammered by hand in
Swedish Lapland from 3.5mm
thick 1770 Undeholm steel to give
a knife measuring some 23.5cm
long with an 11cm blade. This
lightly tapered drop point blade
features a lightly polished forge
finish for character. The steel is
hardened to around HRC 60 and
the edge is straight-forward to
hone to a razor edge and holds it
well in use. The tang is pre-drilled
to take rivets or pins and a
lanyard tube.
Once made up – I used
olivewood for the handles, black
liners and brass pins and tube to
form the handle and 3.5mm
vegetable tan leather for the
sheath – the knife proved
excellent for all sorts of tasks from
skinning to heavy chopping, food
preparation to whittling pegs, and
is as much a joy to use as it was
to build.
Costing around £60, the
Casstrom/RB Full Tang Scandi
Ground Blade makes up into a
very practical knife and should
please hobby knife makers and
practical knife users. Somehow
this knife feels a bit more special
for its personalisation.

Give pet hair the rub off
If you have dogs or cats, this nifty little gadget is a must!
The Carpet is a rubber coated hand-held block that lifts,
gathers and removes pet hair from carpets and upholstery.
I was really impressed when I used this on the carpets
at home for the first time. Our carpets are quite old and
thin so even after hoovering with a good pet hoover, it’s
impossible to get all the hairs out – even if you get ‘right in
there’ with the nozzle, which is back-breaking work.
But with a few drags of the Carpet, all the stubbornly
embedded dog hairs come out easily and you can either pick them up or just suck
them up with the hoover. At the risk of sounding like a Stepford Wife, it really is
strangely satisfying! You wouldn’t want to do your entire house with it obviously, but normally there are just a few specific areas – where the dogs
lie or play – that need extra attention, and for these, the Carpet is a Godsend.
The Carpet is washable, durable and hygienic, with no smells or stickiness. It really is an ingenious little device and at just £5.95 you could
afford to have several around the house and one in the car if you wanted. www.besteverpethairremover.com
