WE BELIEVE in
POSSIBILITIES
Dear YMCA Members, Program Participants, Donors, Volunteers and Staff,
and celebrate the
INSPIRING stories
of our members.
As I sit here and reflect on my second and final year as President of the YMCA Board of Directors, I find myself full of pride and
consider myself fortunate to be part of such a special organization. This fact is reinforced by the tremendous accomplishments
of the YMCA in 2014. These achievements support the Penobscot Bay YMCA’s mission of meeting youth development, healthy
living, and social needs of our community. I’m pleased to state that our YMCA is healthy and supporting our greater community
in many ways.
A few noteworthy highlights from 2014 include:
•
CELEBRATES
AND REMINDS US TO LIVE OUR CAUSE EVERY DAY.
•
•
We made a promise to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility. Fulfilling this promise begins with staff and volunteer leaders
of all levels, understanding the promise and their role in fulfilling it.
•
Nell - “The Y childcare program provides more than a loving place for kids. They offer great programs too. One of the
best programs is learning to swim with Andréa, who emphasizes water safety. She has taught Lila to be both confident
and cautious in the water — a great combination! Lila now has life-long skills and a passion for swimming.”
Mary Alice - “The Rockland community is so excited about the Penobscot Bay YMCA running affordable after-school
programs at South School and the Lura Libby and Cushing Community Schools. Children will grow and thrive under
excellent supervision. They will learn new skills and freely express themselves while exploring their environment
through arts and crafts and outdoor games. They’ll also have time for reading or homework. Staff members will
work together with parents and other caregivers to provide support for each and every child’s individual needs.”
Dan – “The exciting new Rockland Branch YMCA brings increased access to top notch childcare, fitness and
wellness programs to southern Knox County. It also serves as an invitation and reminder that we can engage and
build communities with all of the Y's wonderful programs and facilities, wherever they are located. Knowing that
the Penobscot Bay YMCA is committed to all of Knox County makes me feel like I'm serving my entire community by
being a Y member, board member and donor.”
Julie - “The LIVESTRONG® program at the YMCA has been a wonderful opportunity for me during my recovery from
breast cancer, surgery, and chemotherapy. I have established close friendships, including several with people who
are dealing with similar recovery issues. I have learned how important it is to exercise and practice healthy living.
Meg Barclay and Theo Berez, the dynamic duo, are perfect for this program. Their training and encouragement has
been such a gift to me. I look forward to being part of this valuable community program in the future.”
Ron - “Some doctors have said that if there were a miracle prescription for healthy living, it would be exercise. The Y
has been filling that prescription for me and my wife, Leigh, through its Group Power fitness class. Challenging vigorous
exercise, great instructors and music and — oh yeah — making friends and having fun!”
Charles - “With help from the Y, our Summer Free Lunch Program has served more than 11,000 meals to children in the
Mid-Coast over the past two summers. We now prepare more than 200 meals per day through a program funded by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Our area of outreach has expanded thanks to the support of the Y and several
other community partners. In an effort to prevent hunger, we now deliver meals from our base at Regional School Unit
13 to 10 sites in Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Thomaston, and St. George.”
Valerie - “The Y makes a big difference in my life. I have more free time now than I used to. Seven days a week, the Y is
there to launch me into my day and give me direction. The Y supports me physically but also provides camaraderie with
fellow "athletes." My Y community contributes to my sense of belonging. I reap social, spiritual, emotional, mental, and
physical benefits from the Y. There certainly would be a big Y-shaped vacuum in my life without it! It’s great that now
one is ever turned away. Everyone is included. Everyone can benefit like I do.”

Opened our Rockland Harbor YMCA at 21 Water Street in Rockland. We successfully raised over $350,000 in capital
campaign dollars to make this goal possible. This facility will help support the childcare and healthy living needs of
Southern Knox County.
Through collaboration with RSU 13, we opened two new afterschool programs in Southern Knox County.
Offered the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, to 40 cancer survivors in our community. This free program is a health
initiative at the YMCA, and offers a twelve week recovery program to cancer patients, leading to an improved quality of life.
Awarded 3,310 people and families financial aid, a value of almost $223,000 in services. Every person or family who
requested help was awarded financial aid. Funds to support this work were raised through endowment income, UMCC
support, the Boat Auction, the Summer Event, the Camp Scholarship Campaign and the Annual Support Campaign.
Generated a modest operating surplus that we invested back into the Y in the form of facility repairs, upgrades, and
staff development.
Provided services for 5,163 members and registered over 25,000 individuals in programs.
Through partnerships with RSU 20 and the USDA we helped provide over 4,600 meals to children and families during
the summer.
Added additional parking to the YMCA’s Rockport campus.
Provided hundreds of youth in our community with free memberships to the Teen Center.
Strategic Plan
Our strategic plan that was adopted in 2012 concluded in 2014. During the past year your YMCA worked to meet a
number of challenges in our community.
We continued to meet the evolving health needs of individuals of all ages in our service area, through high quality
programs, facilities and collaborations.
• 31% increase in members over the age of 62 (since 2012).
• offered over 2,000 free swim and wellness classes to YMCA and community members, in hopes of creating a
healthier community.
We remained financially viable in challenging times by raising revenues and controlling costs.
• added two new families to the YMCA Endowment program known as the “Heritage Society”.
• generated 17% of total revenue through contributed sources.
• reduced organizational debt by $30,000.
We sought to expand operational reach and identify new growth opportunities within our service area.
• solidified Childcare offering at Mid-Coast Recreation Center.
• added two additional after school sites.
• opened the new Rockland Harbor YMCA.
While we are proud of our accomplishments to date, we understand that there is
much more work to be done. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement
– we couldn’t do it without you.
Warmly,
Leslie Eaton, YMCA Board President

YOU CAN COUNT ON US.
WE BELIEVE all
children and youth
should be given the
opportunity to reach
their full POTENTIAL in
spirit, mind and body.
We’re here to make
that happen.
2014 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Met the needs of families with school aged children within our
community, as well as reaching out to Southern Knox County
families, the Y expanded our afterschool programs to include
an on school site in Rockland and Thomaston.
• Summer Camp forged friendships and provided exciting
experiences to 1,494 campers between the ages of 4 and 15.
Campers enjoyed such activities as exploring our state parks,
hiking local mountains, amusement parks, a four day trip to
New Hampshire and state-of-the-art archery equipment.
• The Teen Center continued to offer free membership and
programs to youth in the grades five through twelve with
providing a safe environment to enjoy snacks and variety of
after school activities such as art, theatre, cooking, sewing,
dance, outdoor games and just relaxing with friends.
• The free Learn to Swim Program gave children that would not
have had access to lessons with the important swimming life
skills to prepare for a summer of fun. This program offered free
lessons to more than 85 children in Knox County and Lincolnville.
• The Sailfish and high school swim teams built lifelong
relationships and self-confidence, while competing in races
all over the state and in Canada. Over 150 swimmers enjoyed
the challenge of swim team competition and learned a sport to
help them remain physically active for the rest of their lives.
The Sailfish and High School had many state champions and
many team records were broken.
