We understand the idea of studying can be overwhelming
and our team is here to make that process easy for you.
This course guide is designed to help you find out more
about the range of courses we offer. We welcome
everyone to our adult learning and skills centres and our

As part of the wider economic development initiative
we offer a wide range of courses, which can help you to
develop new skills, gain a qualification, find employment,
further your career, and improve health and wellbeing.
The choice is yours... and we are happy to help you find
the right course and get the most out of it.
Our wide range of courses are taught by experienced
and qualified staff, with a well-deserved reputation
for delivering high quality teaching and learning. This
inclusive provision also offers some free accredited
classes to learners on certain benefits. Our classes take
place at our Macbeth Centre in Hammersmith and with
selected partners across the borough (see page 160).
We pride ourselves on being responsive to our learners
needs, through ‘learner voice’ and learner focus groups.
In an effort for complete access we have successfully
introduced online enrolment through our website and
added classes based on the feedback we have received.
We look forward to providing a welcoming and friendly
service to both new and returning learners. If you are
thinking about signing up for any of our courses, don’t
delay, enrol now and enjoy the experience.

Fees, concessions
and financial support
Fees
The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) subsidises
our courses, even when a full fee is payable.
There are three fees for most courses:
●Standard
fee for residents of the UK
or other EU countries.
●Concessionary
fee for:
Non-accredited courses
The Skills Funding Agency will only
fund tuition fees for those on benefits
(see below for details). However, H&F
adult learning and skills service will still
continue to help you financially if you
have been a UK or EU resident for the
past three years and are claiming any
of the following:
– Universal Credit
–JSA
–ESA
– Housing Benefit
–Council Tax Benefit (not single
occupancy)
– Working Tax Credit
– Income Support
– Pension Credit
– Disability Living Allowance
If you are unemployed and are in
receipt of any other type of benefit
(see ‘Help with fees’ on page 8 for full
details) and believe the course will help
you find employment then the course
may also be free for you.
●Full
fee – if you have not been resident
in the UK or EU for the previous three
years a higher fee will be charged.
Please ask as this varies depending on
the course.
If only one fee is shown for the course,
there are no concessions.
Most fees include basic equipment but
you may need to buy additional materials.
Level 3 courses
We are unable to offer concessions for
level 3 courses, please ask at interview
about sources of funding.
If you are under 19
Our courses leading to qualifications are
designed for adults and we receive no
funding for under 19s. If you are under 19
and interested in doing a course please
contact us for further information.
Some accredited/qualification
courses
For UK or EU residents in receipt of
Active Benefits (JSA or ESA WRAG and
Universal Credit mandated to work or
training) there are no fees on some
accredited courses. Look out for this
– it means the course is free.

Learner support,
feedback and policies
Learner voice – we value
your feedback
Please take the time to tell us what you
think. Your feedback helps us to know
when we are ‘getting it right’ and also
helps us to listen to our learners and make
improvements to the service.
Around the buildings you will find
comment/compliment cards that can be
completed and handed to reception, or
you can email [email protected]
We also capture your views in other ways:

●Learner focus groups.
●Monitoring letters of complaints
and compliments.
●Celebrating learners’ success at events
and exhibitions.
●Annual
Key policies
Some of our key policies are summarised
below. Further details are included in the
student handbook and copies of the full
policy documents are available from
reception at Macbeth Centre.
Recruitment policy
It is our policy to help students enrol on
the course that is right for them. Any entry
requirements will be clearly set out in the
course information sheet. We will also
make it clear where courses are designed
to meet the needs of specific groups.
Disability statement
We produce a disability statement each
year setting out how we will support
disabled people across our service.
Please see the student handbook for
more information.
Equal opportunities
The adult learning and skills service will
ensure that no one is discriminated against
because of their ethnic or national origin,
race or colour, gender, age, class, sexual
orientation, or because of their religious
or political beliefs, disability or income.
If you feel you have been discriminated
against please talk to your lecturer or ask
at reception to speak to a manager.
Safeguarding
We are committed to safeguarding
young people and vulnerable adults,
and also to providing a safe and secure
learning environment for all learners.
We work with the local safeguarding
boards and recruit and train staff in
line with current legislation.
If you have any concerns about the
treatment of young people, or of vulnerable
adults please contact eamon.scanlon@
lbhf.gov.uk. If you observe any health
and safety issues, please contact a member
of staff as soon as possible.
Prevent
From 1 July 2015, Parliament places a
statutory requirement on the council to
“have due regard to the need to prevent
people from being drawn into terrorism.”

protecting people who might be
susceptible to radicalisation. Our adult
learning and skills service uses established
safeguarding processes to ensure
awareness of ‘Prevent’ for both staff and
learners and so help divert potentially
vulnerable people from becoming
involved in extreme or radical groups.

English and maths
There are no fees for these courses (in most cases) and they are offered from
entry 1 (beginner) to level 2 (advanced). They are for adults who want to
develop and improve their reading, writing and maths skills and gain a
qualification which will improve their confidence for work or further studies.
A recent survey undertaken by YouGov says a very high percentage of
employers rate functional skills (English, maths and IT) qualifications as more
appropriate for the workplace. Parents who want to develop their skills in
order to help their children learn are most welcome. Classes are small and
friendly and offered by highly qualified and experienced tutors who will
support you to achieving your learning goals.
Below are examples of what we do in English and maths classes.
English reading and writing from entry 1 (beginner) to level 2 (advanced)
At the different levels, you will work on reading and improving your
understanding in a variety of contexts. You will work on grammar and
punctuation, extend your language use and vocabulary, learn some spelling
strategies, rules and techniques. You will learn how to write different kinds of
letters, notes, messages and emails. At higher levels you will learn how to write
reports, speeches and reviews.
At all levels you will learn how to speak clearly and listen more effectively in a
variety of formal and informal settings. This includes how to speak and listen in
the workplace and how to make face to face presentations.
Maths entry 1, 2 and 3 (entry levels – beginners and intermediate)
This class will help you to get to grips with the basics of maths. The course will
cover number, measure, shape, space and handling data. You will learn how to
read, write and compare numbers, add, subtract, multiply and divide small
numbers and use calculators with confidence.
Maths level 1 and level 2 (post-intermediate/advanced)
At higher levels you will learn to compare fractions, decimals and percentages
and use imperial and metric measurements, for example, weight, capacity, length,
distance, area and volume.

English language skills
helped Ildiko progress from
cleaner to finance manager
Learner profile: Ildiko Sagi
Ildiko has studied employability and also English
for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
When I arrived in the UK four years ago,
I did not speak any English. Although
my background was in finance, I was not
able to continue on that career path in
the UK without the skills to communicate
with colleagues. My first job in England
was a cleaner, which was only possible
because I worked with Hungarian
colleagues and they helped. I was able
to get by but I felt frustrated.
I had to sit down and make a plan to
get my life back on track. The first, vital
step was to learn English. I was happy
to find this centre because it showed
me how I could continue my journey.
First I focused on my English which led
me to take a number of ESOL classes.
I felt like I was the worst student in the
class, but I applied myself and with the
support of my tutor and students I
became confident enough to begin
practising on my own.
I took an employability course whilst
I was completing ESOL. By the end of
the course I was brave enough to stop
my cleaning jobs and re-enter finance.
I found a vacancy and sent them my
CV and covering letter. The interview
and English skills I had learnt helped me
turn a 30 minute interview into two hour
conversation. I was able to secure the
role and am now a financial manager.

Adding new qualifications
to her existing skills gave
Irina a career boost
Learner profile: Irina Apala
Irina has studied accounting, employability and
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
I have taken a number of courses
including bookkeeping and an
employability course.
Both courses have helped me reach
my destination. After training as an
economist in Latvia, I had over 15 years
of bookkeeping experience but I was
unable to work here without recognised
qualifications. My first step was to learn
English then I enrolled onto the
accountancy course.
I was able to gain a qualification
whilst I refreshed my memory and
learnt the differences in book keeping
practises in the UK.
Following my accountancy course,
I began to look for a job without any
luck. I was informed about the
employability course and decided to
take it to see if I was doing something
wrong. The course gave me the tools to
build a strong CV and we covered a
range of different scenarios.
Half way through the course I was
able to get a job as a book-keeper, but
decided to continue because it helped
me change my approach.
I am currently taking courses for
pronunciation to continue improving.
I have found people understand me
better and it helps me to get more from
my colleagues at work.

Learner profile: Delson and Vicki
Delson Weekes has been attending the AMICI dance class
and the inclusive dance class with tutor Vicki Hawkins
We met Delson and Vicki to listen to
their incredible story of dance and
communication.
Delson arrived to the Macbeth Centre
following a referral from a course at
another college where he was doing
performing arts. Delson quickly
progressed within his classes.
Delson loves dancing because he gets
to express himself through creativity
and, as a choreographer, direct people.
It has been a great way to exercise and
make friends.
Vicki saw the twinkle in Delson’s eye
when she first began working with him.
They became good friends when Vicki
noticed that Delson had a special skill
with dance and interacting with others
through music.
Delson’s ability to interpret music
made Vicki and Katherine Gill (two of
his tutors) collaborate with Delson and
another learner Francis Majekodunmi,
to set up the BLINK Dance Theatre
group. It began small with rehearsals in
community centres and they are now
touring the country.
BLINK’s first big tour was a lottery
funded project which visited primary
schools around the country to help
young people understand differences
through performance.
The students became the masters
and it was officially the first director

Delson (left) loves dancing,
and with tutor Vicki (right) he
tours the country performing
credit for Delson and Francis, supported
by Kat and Vicki.
The show was their idea and revolved
around a central character who had a
form of autism. The journey of the main
character showed how subtle and
severe hate and mate crime can be.
During the workshop, Delson would
show his unique ability to involve the
shyest child in the class.
Delson has just returned from his
tour with Blink and FaceFront where
he focused on his acting skills.
Delson played a student with
learning difficulties who wanted to be a
mechanic by portraying the difficulties
of the transitional journey. Delson
visited Brighton, Manchester, Leeds,
Bradford and Birmingham on tour.
Delson as part of BLINK is currently
codirecting a show, funded by the Arts
Council, at the Lyric centre where it all
began. Delson also teaches drama class
on a Friday in the Wink drama group
and supports other classes.
Delson shared how happy he is with
his own journey and he gets to see
direct, choreograph, perform, work,
support and participate every day.
Tutors and carers believe Delson is the
perfect hybrid between student, teacher
and supporter. Delson was nicknamed
‘Magic Man’ for his techniques to
promote inclusion, with an ability to
empathise with every learner.
Vicki now calls on Delson to help
when a child is feeling left out.
Most recently Delson has been
developing his microphone skills that
are unleashed when Delson raps his
own lyrics, which will soon be used in a
BLINK performance.

Learner profile: Ayiesha Waseem
Ayiesha is taking the Supporting Teaching L3
course at Macbeth Centre
I am currently working towards a
specialist diploma for supporting
teaching and learning in schools.
After completing my masters in
financial management I worked in the
banking sector.
I wanted to move into a career that
was better suited with my priorities,
my children. My mother was in teaching
and so I knew it was fulfilling vocation.
Due to my banking experience,
I wasn’t sure how I could build a
foundation in teaching.
I spoke to a teacher in my children’s
school and he told me to consider
becoming a teaching assistant if I
wanted to explore the career path.
I found out through friends about
the course at Macbeth Centre and
called in to set up an interview. I was
able to discuss my existing qualifications
and was assessed accordingly. I was
placed in level 3 instead of starting
from level 1.
The lessons are designed to get you
ready for the real world. This means
our tutor has embedded guidance into
the course.
I am currently discussing next steps
with my tutors and the careers advisor
so that I have a plan before I complete

After practising painting
portraits Clare has received
commissions for her work
Learner profile: Clare McAulay
Clare has been studying portraiture
at Macbeth Centre for five terms
I am currently taking my fifth term in
Portraiture. I come back because of
the high standard of teaching. I am
continuously improving in a number of
areas which are documented in our
workbooks with the teacher’s comments.
All students regardless of their level
of expertise are encouraged. We help
each other with critiques which gives
us a chance to discuss each others
differences in style.
The classes are also a chance to
socialise with fellow painters as painting
is a very insular activity. This class has
given me a second chance to explore
my creative side. This has been a way
for me to continue what I had begun.
I was able to get back to my calling and
find ways to improve.
I began by practising and painting a
portrait of my friend, who then uploaded
it to onto social media. Suddenly, I was
receiving commission requests. I had
dreamed of a career as a painter but
didn’t think it possible.
I have just completed a portrait of
two sisters, now onto the next portrait.
I will keep coming back if I can
because it keeps me focused.

With their new interior
design skills, Laura (left) and
Kim have gone into business
Learner profile: Laura and Kim
Laura Henostraza and Kim Gudenus have both
studied interior design at Macbeth Centre
Laura: I joined this course after
deciding to start my own business in
vinyl wallpapers. I had the business
background but I needed the industry
understanding of interior design.
After meeting Kim in class, I asked
her to join my business just as I was
about to begin Deco Feel.
During class our tutor taught us the
basics of interior design and imparted
her experience of the industry.
The course helped me develop my
eye and identify different fashions so
I had more confidence when it came
to choosing my stock.
We learnt a lot including how to spot
industry trends, put mood boards
together and understanding elevation
drawings.
Kim: I have taken many courses with
this organisation. Laura and I became
friends and I began to understand
Laura’s vision. I was really impressed.
I enjoyed learning how to mix colours
and textures to give a different impact.
Our collection has a good mix of
classic and eccentric styles. We now
have a wonderful collection of selfadhesive textures and patterns.

Marisol always dreamed of
acting and with drama classes
she’s also made new friends
Learner profile: Marisol Sanchez
Marisol Sanchez has been studying drama
at Macbeth Centre for three terms
I am currently taking Drama for the
third term. I feel lucky to have found
this class by accident.
I was taking French lessons at the
Macbeth Centre and my class was
cancelled, with no other plans I
stumbled upon the drama class who
were having such fun.
Since I was little I wanted to act but I
never had the chance or the confidence.
At first I thought it was only for young
people, I quickly realised age is not a
factor in drama.
My dream was to act and in every
class, I am acting!
It is a very beautiful experience, to be
able to lose and find yourself through
another character.
I am living in London before returning
to Sweden, this class has become a way
to make friends.
We have a coffee group after class in
Macbeth Community Café, where we
plan outings. We went to the cinema
last time so will be going to the cinema
next week.
My teacher has recently encouraged
me to go for a casting just to experience
the process further and one never
knows where it could lead.
For now, I am just really happy to
explore and play.

This is the most practical course for anyone wishing to start a career in interpreting.
The community interpreting course is over a term and a half (17 weeks) and all
interested students must attend a pre-course interview before being allowed to
join. There is no final exam: learners work throughout the course on a portfolio
of work (assignments, role-plays, presentations, glossaries etc.) to be submitted
for external verification. Successful learners will receive a level 3 certificate in
community interpreting accredited by OCN which is the entry requirement most
interpreting/translation agencies expect nowadays.

Studying interpreting enabled
Angelina to gain the qualifications
and career change she wanted
Learner profile: Angelina Grasso
Angelina studied community interpreting then took
the Diploma in Police Interpreting (DPI) course
I took a Diploma in Police Interpreting
course last year after finding myself
unemployed due to organisational
changes. I had studied criminology but
with a long career in production I
needed to find a way back in.
I took a course in community
interpreting to find a way to help
people. It was only when I was on the
course and my tutor told me about a
path in police interpreting that it
clicked, I could change my career and
utilise my criminology background.
I signed up for Diploma in Police
Interpreting and the class was brilliant,
we gained some real experience.
Our tutor was a working interpreter
and invited a police officer to class to
role-play what a real situation would
feel like. This real life experience helped
me when I interviewed for the
Metropolitan Police.
The course and my diploma gave me
the confidence to apply to be a member
of the National Register of Public
Service Interpreters.
Since then I have worked with the
Magistrates and the Crown Court.
Recently I have become a member of
the registered interpreters for the
Metropolitan Police and am now waiting
for the phone to ring for my first job.

I was marketing manager for a food
consortium and felt demotivated in
my role. I was asked to proofread an
important document and I found lots of
mistakes. The process helped me realise
I could enter the interpreting field by
utilising my language skills. I was lucky
to find an interpreting course at the
Macbeth Centre that allowed me to
continue working.
After completing Community
interpreting level 2 and 3, I went on
to study Masters in translation and
interpreting. I really felt I had the base
knowledge to excel in my masters and
was one of six students chosen to visit
the UN to attend the Humans Rights
conference. I interpreted the speech for
the Chinese Minister of Affairs. It was
an actualisation of my journey, I was
translating important issues on a global
scale. My tutor had given me advice
about my next steps and told me about
becoming an agent.
I now have my own business and
recently accompanied the Deputy
Governor of the Guazhang province to
the Range Rover factory and HMRC.

Motor vehicle and bicycle maintenance 141
Michael has added to his existing
engineering skills and now aims to
progress into further education
Learner profile: Michael Yohans
Michael has studied car maintenance level 1 and 2, bicycle
maintenance level 1 and functional skills at Macbeth Centre
I have completed Car and Bicycle
Maintenance level 1 and 2.
I really like bicycles because they are
one of the best ways to travel, they are
environmentally friendly, a great way
to exercise and don’t cost money on
every journey. It gives people freedom
as long as they know how to maintain
their bike.
I arrived in the UK 15 years ago after
growing up in a war zone. I found it
difficult to find my place here and spent
the first ten years on living on the
streets. I was assigned a social worker
who helped me find my place in the UK.
I explained that I was a trained
engineer specialising in industrial
mechanics in my native country. With
this information, I was recommended to
the Macbeth Centre and I began my
journey with the motor vehicles
department.
I have found my courses engaging
and they gave me something productive
to do with my time.
I enjoy understanding how things
work and here I get to take it all apart
and put it all back together.
This experience has inspired me to
progress and after completing my
qualifications I want to pursue further
education.

Studying bookkeeping has
given Shamir skills to progress
into further education
Learner profile: Shamir Hindocha
Shamir has studied bookkeeping at
levels 1 and 2 at Macbeth Centre
I took Bookkeeping level 1 and 2 at the
Macbeth Centre last year. I found the
course really useful in helping me
reaffirm that the accountancy career
path is right for me.
In 2011, I was in further education
and had to leave due to illness. When I
recovered, I felt as though I had gone
off track in reaching my goal to become
an accountant.
Before jumping back into the deep
end, I wanted reassess my skill set and
regain some confidence. I was able to
discuss my situation with my tutor prior
to joining and she was understanding
and ensured that I felt supported.
I was able to refresh my knowledge
through the curriculum. Each lesson
refreshed my existing knowledge and
confirmed my bookkeeping ability. As I
progressed to level 2 I felt that I could
revisit further education.
By the end of the courses, I regained
my confidence and got back into the
right mind set. After completing level 2,
I was able to continue onto further
education and I am currently studying
for degree in accounting and finance.
I may even come back for the CV
workshop, but for now I am now on
track and looking forward to a career
in accounting.

Apprentice profile: Lilia Frunzo
Lilia has been working as an apprentice in
business administration at Work Zone
I have been a Business Administration
apprentice based at Work Zone. This
role is a new experience for me, where
I have enjoyed myself whilst learning
and working. Prior to my apprenticeship
I only had retail experience and I found
myself wanting to do more in the long
term. I was not sure how I could enter
other roles without having the relevant
experience. A friend told me to go and
speak to a careers advisor and share my
intention to change industries.
The careers advisor talked about the
possibility of an apprenticeship. At first I
was unsure because I thought it would
be like studying again. I wanted to gain
a practical understanding instead of just
theory because I want to be able to find
a job afterwards. I go to college as part
of my apprenticeship. I have found the
topics covered help me understand the
big picture.
I appreciate the fact that they
recognised my potential and gradually
given me responsibilities over time.
I feel as though I have been able
to demonstrate my value in my new
career path.
