Friction Wheel Spark Ignition Wheel Lock Musket
Friction Wheel Spark Ignition
Wheel Lock Musket, ca. 1530
Concept of Friction Wheel Ignition
The friction wheel is set counter-clockwise
with a key over an external square drive.
When set, a spring loaded locking lever
moves into the corresponding recess on the
backside of the friction wheel. The locking
lever is held in its position by a spring
equipped trigger bar. By activating the
trigger, the trigger bar is pivoted and
releases the locking lever. The tensioned
chain turns back the friction wheel. The
spring tensioned cock presses the pyrite
against a turning friction wheel. Between the
friction wheel and the pyrite, sparks are
produced and ignite the priming powder.
