FROM THE CEO
Tin Foil and a Coat Hanger!
I
t’s close to footy finals time, though
admittedly, my beloved Geelong Cats
aren’t in the finals, and my favourite
player ‘Stevie J’ is leaving the Cattery - so
now instead I will have to watch the Rugby
World Cup, or World Series Baseball, or
even the NFL (tho I’m switching allegiance
from Tennessee Titans to the 49ers)!
Now, regards the TV, if only I could
guarantee I’d be able to watch it! To ensure
I get decent coverage of the footy, I have to
have one of my boys up on the roof, hanging
on for dear life to the antenna whilst waving
a coat hanger and wearing a tin foil hat,
just so the reception doesn’t drop out. I
thought digital TV was supposed to fix this
nonsense! Of course it could be a crafty plan
to force us all to subscribe to cable! (I’ve
been trying this for four months and still
not connected - HELLO Foxtel!!)
I have received a number of requests from all
across the village to do something about the
TV reception issues. From the records I can

see many of my predecessors have tried, with
collaborative investments made into repeaters
and the like, but still with limited success.
I note mapping of the village regarding zones
for reception was undertaken and problem
zones identified and residents advised to call
an antenna repair man. However, it now
appears that due to the ‘restack’ of frequencies,
the majority of Falls Creek village suffers
regular interference and annoying staccato
infused, test patterned pixelated drop outs. I
remember as a kid, Dad making me get up
(pre the days of remote controls - unless you
count throwing a slipper at the dials!), go over
to the old Rank Arena wooden encased box
and twist and turn the set top antenna to the
tune of “yep, that’s it, stop, don’t move, ah,
nope gone again… yep, that’s it…”
So adding to the growing list of 21 century
communication challenges faced on the
mountain, we’ve looked to the ACMA to help
fine tune (pun intended) this dilemma before
the Eagles and Dockers line up for the National
Anthem on October 3rd, at the MCG. Note:
if it’s an Eagles vs Dockers grand final, resort
entry will be free on grand final day!
Investigating possible contributing causes to
our terrible TV reception, electromagnetic
interference or EMI from all manner of
household consumer devices, even down
to snowmobiles are all plausible reasons for
degraded reception. Who’d have thunk it.
So as they’d say in the classics, “Please stand
by, we’re experiencing technical difficulties.”
Now, there have been no such ‘technical’
difficulties justifying any reason to come to
Falls Creek for some spring skiing - in fact
you’re mad if you don’t. This last week, we’ve
been blessed with a tidy little 20cm top up,
which sees the International Poma giving
an encore performance and the outlook for
a little more snow into next week also looks
promising. At the time of writing, there
are reports of several local skiers missing
‘out of bounds’ near one of the many huts.
Obviously, the spring snow is so good, even
some locals have lost their bearings
This weekend, September 12th and 13th
it’s Onesie Weekend too, plus The Dreamer
- slopestyle competition is being held at the
Panorama Terrain Park on Drover’s Dream
as well…so get amongst it.
If you still can’t justify a reason for some
spring skiing, how about a great footy fan
deal. If your team isn’t in the finals (like
mine!), or gets knock out, pre grand final,
you will get a 50% discount on resort entry
for any day you decide, right through the
finals series. Just present your AFL or AFL
Club membership card at the Howman’s
Gap gate, ATS terminal or FCRMB offices
to take advantage of the offer.
Now, turn the TV off and hit the slopes!
NB: Footy Fan deal valid for AFL or AFL
Club membership card holders ONLY.
Excludes use with any other offer.

FALLS FREESTYLE SERIES
The Dreamer
T
his week opened with ‘freshies’ and
is looking to clear to nice weather
this weekend - in perfect time for
our last Freestyle event, The Dreamer. This
Saturday the 12th of September will be the last
hoedown throwdown of our infamous Falls
Freestyle Series and with entries piling in faster
than any other event we’ve had this year, we’re
predicting it to be a cracker of a day!
This event will be simple and modest, like a
Snownut cinnamon donut - no themes, no
rules and no limits. Two nominated runs for
judging out of all runs had through the day
with a combined judging score taking out
the lead. There will be two lines to choose
from on the day to showcase all abilities and
flavours with an array of rails, boxes and
jumps. Unlike the intimidating size of the
Storm the Castle Course, this course will be
far more mellow and inviting, to encourage
all ability levels to have a go and get involved.
The hill has been alive with banter for a few
weeks now, as well as some secret training
out on Panorama Park, in preparation to
slay the course and receive bragging rights
for the remaining weeks of the season.
Panorama Park has had a slopestyle competition
feel to it this year, with numerous rebuilds so
suit all tastes, impressing locals and visitors alike
all season. With a nice flow feel to the Park
this year and our (spunky) Park Crew always
ready to give a helping hand and tips out on the
slopes, Drover’s has been host to a Park product
we are all super proud of!
The presentations will be at the Man at
9pm on the day to give us plenty of wind
up brews before RJMC hits the decks to
massage your brains with his epic tunes.
Not only will we know the winners of the
slopestyle comp on the day, but the overall
Series winners will be calculated and
announced as well, as points were accrued
over the season to proclaim the Falls
Freestyle Series King and Queen.
A big shout out and thankyou to the
generous sponsors of our Falls Freestyle
Series; Snowden, Aussie Skier, The Boot
Lab, Sontimer, Dragon, Radical Gloves,

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA
Royal Talbot
L
ast weekend at Falls Creek, DWA and
Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre
brought seven keen members up to the
snow for a big weekend of sit skiing. Royal
Talbot is a Rehabilitation centre in Melbourne
that specialises in spinal cord injuries. DWA
has a long standing relationship with Royal
Talbot and we thoroughly enjoy having this
crew along for the weekend.
Out of the seven guys that joined us for the
weekend, four of them were sit skiing for the
first time. They were mentored and encouraged
by three returners that set the benchmark for
the team, as well as some special advice and
demonstrations on the Sunday from Lincoln
Budge, one of DWA’s high performance sit ski
athletes. Standing with Jim Kolokethis halfway
down Main Street on the Sunday, watching
Lincoln rip down from the top, Jim’s reaction
can only be summed up by his words of “Holy
crap” as Lincoln skied past. “His shoulders
almost touch the snow when he turns” Jim say’s.
Almost every time you get a young keen sit
skier up to the snow for the first time, they ask,
“How fast can you go in one of these things?”
It was absolutely brilliant of Lincoln to come
and show them how hard you actually can ski
sitting down!
These camps are always very rewarding
as we help share with people the world of
snowsports, where people with disabilities play
on the same field as the rest of the population.
It’s especially great for the Royal Talbot crew
who may have had a taste of snowsports as an
able-bodied person. Since their injury, the last

thing a lot of them think that they are going
to be able to do is play sports with their mates
and family or spend time with them in the
same ways they might have in the past. This
was a special weekend for Jim Kolokethis, as
he was a passionate skier before his spinal cord
injury. Since his accident he hasn’t been able
to get out on snow with any of his four boys
or brothers. This weekend three of his boys
and brother Pete joined us for the camp.
It was great for the five guys to be cruising
around on the snow together, especially on
Sunday since it was Father’s Day. We hope
to see all of them back next season, or if
we’re lucky, even this season. •

DWA Hand- up from Westpac
Disabled WinterSport Australia took a
break from its Advanced Guide Training
program at Mt Hotham over the weekend
to celebrate the receipt of a $10,000
grant from the 2015 Westpac Foundation
Community Grant program.
Representatives from Westpac management
spent the weekend in the resort with DWA
taking a first-hand look at the training
program and skiing with DWA members
including locals Lincoln Budge and
Jason Sauer.
DWA President Jim Blackburn said “We
are delighted to have been successful in our
2015 Westpac Foundation Community
Grant application to support our Mt
Hotham resort services program. While
here our Westpac guests also took a ride
in a sit ski and this enabled them to
understand how people with a disability
can equally participate in snow sport
activities” he said.
A fabulous move, $10,000 from Westpac to DWA. From left: Ann Brabyn - Westpac Manager; Jon Hutchins - CEO
Mt Hotham Resort Management; Ross Passalaqua - Director DWA; Jim Blackburn - President DWA; Olivia Patten
- Westpac Manager; Phil Knight - DWA Mt Hotham Coordinator; Belinda Trembath - General Manager Hotham
Skiing Company and Jason Sauer, DWA member and sit skier! Pic - Courtesy DWA.
Westpac manager Olivia Patten said
she was thrilled to be able to see DWA
in action. “Westpac is committed to
supporting local community organisations
providing opportunities to those who
need it most. It is clear to us that DWA is
changing lives for the better.”
Almost 20% of Australians have a disability
and DWA and its resort partners are playing
an increasingly active role in improving both
on and off snow accessibility across the resort.
This money will be used to initiate and
develop the new DWA resort services
program at Mt Hotham. This includes
having a program co-ordinator on the
ground (so to speak) and having a supply of
adaptive equipment.
Ed Note: Well done to the DWA team on
expanding the services offered and congratulations

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT
From Junior Workshop
T
he Snowsports School’s Junior
Workshop Program for 6-14 year
olds is weaving its magic once again developing our munchkins to greater heights.
This time it’s with 11 year old Taj Leung.
“Taj’s skiing is really a product of Junior
Workshop,” says his mother, Pauline, “The
‘Shop’ (as it is known) nurtured Taj beautifully
in the space of just 10 days in September 2014.”
Taj had skied only three days ever in
Innsbruck, Austria in January 2014
when the family travelled to Europe for a
holiday. They loved it so much that Pauline
researched for the most family-friendly
resort in Australia and booked for two
weeks at Falls Creek in September last year.
With only three days of skiing under his
belt, Taj started in Junior Workshop in a
‘Possum (green level) group and by the end
of the fortnight he had progressed to the
black level zone - and it doesn’t stop there.
In the space of a year, he’s made it to the
Nationals in Interschools for moguls and
is a guest member in the Race Club Mogul
Program last weekend in preparation for
the Nationals at Buller on 12th September.
“This type of progression is almost
unprecedented,” says Junior Workshop Crew
Leader Phil Mann, “it’s very rare indeed, so we
are very proud of him and our instructors who
have helped nurture him to great success.”
Children’s Program Supervisor Lauren
McKechnie adds, “Our programs are designed
to cater to all levels of skier and snowboarder,
and Taj’s achievements show just how far
kids can take their skills when guided by the
instructors in our group programs. And with

ONESIE WEEKEND
It’s a Hoot!!!
T
his same weekend in 2013 saw
these incredible (that’s one word for
them) Onesie’s, the animal type and
traditional old-school type; take over the
mountain for the inaugural Onesie weekend
at Falls Creek. 2014 saw an even bigger
crowd drag out the retro gear and ‘actually
parade it!’ Your Ed tried to slide into his but no way! This year a whole lot of folk will
be trying to do the same thing - hopefully
with a bit more luck. And if you haven’t got
a retro suit, grab one of those baggy things!
As you arrive for the weekend, the first
thing you’ll notice, you can get a two night
for onesie night discount at the ticket box,
but you must be wearing your Onesie outfit.
Then, during the course of the weekend,
your Onesie outfit will entitle you to ‘Two
for Onesie’ discounts like snow tubing or
Two for Onesie Lift, Lesson and Rental
deal courtesy Falls Creek Ski Lifts.
Many of the restaurants have got behind the
weekend, offering two for onesie dinners,
two for onesie lunches, free baked treats,
extra donuts, two for onesie hot chocolates,
half price slushies and two for onesie ski and
board hire. Check out www.fallscreek.com.au/
onesieweekend. Onesie outfits will be available
in Slalom Plaza, or in the Information Centre.
Other fantastic activities will
include:
The Amazing Race - which means a 10am
start in Slalom Plaza on Saturday 12th
- where you will receive your instructions.
Between 10am and 12noon, the Pete Snow
Jam in Slalom Plaza will get the kids going
with arts and snowcrafts plus a special Pete
the Snowdragon Dance Party.
From 7:30pm Stingray will be hosting a
ripper Fireball Onesie Party with prizes
and drink specials.
On Sunday 13th, Onesie weekend will
continue with Onesie of a kind Mogul Race
on the bumps on Drovers starting at around
10am. It’s free to enter and the winner takes
home a $100 Stingray Voucher.
To cap it all off there’ll be a Onesie Weekend
Closing Partay in Slalom Plaza from 12noon
to around 2pm with live music, a fund-raiser
BBQ and the announcement of the Amazing
Race winners!
Spring is party time in Falls Creek and
Onesie Weekend has quickly developed as
the “peak event’ of our party season. This
year, Falls Creek has invited Baby Boomers,
Gen-Xers and Gen-Ys to join the fun by
dragging their retro one-pieces out from the
back of the cupboard. Onesie up and join
the party. •

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
That Perfect Crust
S
pring is a special time on the High
Plains. Most days dawn cool and
crisp as the sun slowly burns away the
early morning fog to reveal a vast beautiful
landscape, still relatively untouched by
human hands.
A rare and special place in the modern
world. Falls Creek at the edge of the Bogong
High Plains is simply just a door to a much
larger playground. A playground best
experienced on foot or by Nordic skiing.
The High Plains are one of the few places
I have ever been, where I have experienced
complete silence on a still morning. No cars
or engines running, no wind rustling trees,
just simple, perfect silence.
Up until the most recent spring dump of
snow, the High Plains were set up perfectly
for spring skiing. With the cold nights and
warm days, a perfect freeze, thaw cycle
was created making the crust hard enough
for anyone to go out on an adventure. A
cycle that will be back soon! As great as the
resort is, it only makes up for a few percent
of the total snow covered area, which
means it’s not too hard to head out and
find some perfect, untracked turns.
Perhaps this is Nordic’s best kept secret. The
backcountry is almost endless, just out our
back door, yet we only seem to look out the
window of the front door. In the Northern
hemisphere backcountry skiing is a huge
part of mountain life and an extremely
common form of skiing. The High Plains
offer some amazing places for skiers to earn
their turns, as they hike up and glide down
some perfect runs, crowd free.
The beauty of backcountry skiing and crust
skiing is it’s so simple. While backcountry

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
skiing is perhaps gear intensive, Nordic as
always is just very simple. Anyone can put
skis on and go for a walk, shuffle or glide.
Therefore anyone can just wake up to a cool,
clear morning and experience a beautiful
sunrise over the Bogong High Plains. If it’s
not on your bucket list, it should be. When
the snow is that cold and firm it becomes
beautiful, glistening and fast, so getting
out to vantage points for the perfect view is
made even easier for you!
Most people who have skied at Falls would
have seen the helicopter flying in and out,
taking skiers between Falls and Hotham.
But I wonder how many have considered
skiing it? Recently a few Nordic skiers
headed over to Hotham from Falls for
lunch and skied back. It’s a 50km round
trip and when compared to cycling, it’s
really not that far. And not an uncommon
trip! Talk to many of the older skiers
around town, they even used to race it!
Another great experience is just skiing
around Rocky Valley Dam and seeing
the resort from a completely different
perspective and view. This year although
unskiable, the lake has remained frozen
solid for week and coupled that with a
sunrise or a view back across to the resort,
things are looking quite amazing!
But perhaps the greatest aspect of crust
skiing is the freedom. It’s a unique sense
of freedom out there and it offers a huge
sense of independence - where a skier
doesn’t have to rely on groomed trails or
chairlifts. No need to chase what’s been
freshly groomed, because it simply doesn’t
matter. Grooming of cross-country ski
trails is a relatively new phenomenon in
the big history of Nordic skiing. If you
have destination in mind great, but if you
don’t, you can ski where you fancy for as
long as you like. Making first tracks has
been something that skiers have chased
for generations. As a child growing up, we
always played a game of not crossing each
other’s tracks. Where ever we skied we
always aimed not to cross another’s path.
The Bogong High Plains covers about 1600 square
kilometres - mostly snow covered. Enjoy! Pic - Paul Kovacs .
The expanse is endless so why ski over
someone’s tracks?
So if you’re getting sick of skiing the same
runs. How about creating your own? And
if you need some advice, talk to the team at
Falls Creek Nordic Hire at Windy Corner. •

The Spring Ball
With just over a week to go to the Spring
Ball, there are still a limited number of
tickets available. The ball will be held
at Pretty Valley Lodge on Sunday the
20th of September. The proceedings will
commence at 6pm with a welcome drink
followed by dinner served at 6:45pm. The
entertainment part of the evening will blast
off at 8pm with songs from bygone days,
including some good old Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The support performers, as mentioned
in detail last week are Debbie Neilson
and Luke Reeves. Mr Johnny Devlin will
highlight the night’s proceedings with some
evergreen classic hits from the 50’s and
beyond. A Kiwi by birth, Mr Devlin moved
to Oz after a successful career as a recording
star. Johnny Devlin and his group the Devils
wowed the Australian public. Their television
appearances on Bandstand and Six O’Clock
Rock along with the Lee Gordon shows
- especially at Festival Hall Melbourne and
the Sydney Stadium - kept them in the public
eye for many years. Some of the numerous
domestic and international artists that
Johnny has performed with are Chuck Berry,
Conway Twitty, Duane Eddy, Gerry and
the Pacemakers, The Everly Brothers, Ricky
Nelson, Crash Craddock, Johnny Ray, the
Drifters, The Coasters, The Delltones, Johnny
O’Keefe, Col Joye and the Joy Boys, Max
Merritt and the Meteors to name but a few!
1964 was a milestone year for Johnny
Devlin when he was the main support act
for group of young lads from Liverpool in
the UK. They performed 35 times on their
tour of Australia and New Zealand. These
impressionable young men with the mop
top hairdos were called The Beatles.
We are privileged to have Debbie, Luke
and Johnny share their time on stage with
us. It will be a fabulous night of dress up
gear, music, food, social interaction, a few
drinks - and if you are inclined - a dance or
too. So support our local Falls Creek ball,
you won’t be disappointed - a bargain @
$75 per person. Please contact 5758 3210

SPRING ACTIVITIES
With Much to Enjoy
L
ocal residents are fortunate to live
in this fascinating environment
- surrounded by hills and the everchanging bush. We are also able to experience
the coming and going of the four seasons.
Summer for the fantastic host of outdoor pursuits
(too many to list here); autumn for the onset of
the cool and surrounded by exotic colours; winter
we love for its influx on wonderful visitors and
our opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the high
plains under a mantle of snow; and then spring.
Looking around there is a plethora of fabulous
colour in the blossoms adorning the trees and
the wattle!!! How good is it - and no wonder it
was chosen as our national colour (with green,
representing the Golden Wattle).
Elsewhere in this publication is an excellent
report on the joys of the Bogong High
Plains in spring on a pair of skinny skis.
But there are those who prefer to stay in the
resort - whether they be die-hard downhillers or simply valued first-time visitors,
there is still plenty to do to produce that
holiday in the snow you dreamed of. And
the fresh falls we’ve had earlier in the week
just make it all that little bit better. Spring
skiing is a good time.
On the back of your handy ‘less than’
pocket sized trail map is a list of the extra
activities that will make your holiday much,
much more than just skiing or boarding
- no matter how good it is! (And everyone
should have the Trail Map in their pocket).
Once you have decided to take advantage of
one or more of the activities, you may make
a booking by phoning the toll free number,
1800 204 424, or by speaking with any of
the staff in either of the Falls Creek Sport
shops - one in the QT complex at the base
of Falls Express chairlift, and the other in
the Village Bowl, beside the Eagle Chairlift.
Snowmobile Tours
The opportunity to ride you own
snowmobile does not come along that
often. 20% Off tours during spring is a
certain way to get you out on the slopes of

out towards Mt McKay. Now that the
snow is here get out and enjoy an exciting
snowmobile tour as part of your holiday.

must have a valid, current drivers licence) or
you can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on

Helicopter Flights
Forest Air Helicopters are a local quality
chopper service based in Albury. They
offer several services including a ferry
service from Albury to the slopes; from
Mount Beauty to the slopes; the Heli Link
from the slopes of Falls Creek to the slopes
of Hotham for the day.
Then there are the scenic flights. The Bell
Longranger 206L3 can take six people and
will give you the experience of a life-time.
I mean - how often do you get the chance
to enjoy the beauty of the Bogong High
Plains from the comfort of a helicopter.
No-one has ever come back to say they
didn’t “love it!”

DIANA LODGE
Building on Tradition
T
he renovations at Diana Alpine
Lodge have been very much fifteen
years of planning. For the current
manger, Lisa Logan and her father and
owner, Don Logan, the wishful thinking
that began earlier was a product of working
in one of the lodges of Falls Creek that has
been in existence for over 60 years.
Diana was one of a number of lodges
established by people employed in the
construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric
scheme, namely Kevin Shoebridge, in
the 1950s. From that time the lodge
grew and evolved, rather than a planned
development. For a period it was the
post office and the telephone exchange.
By the time the Logan’s and 11 other
families bought it in 1975, it was a mix
of at least half dozen extensions and
modifications. Further changes from an
extensive addition to some improvements
internally and externally took place
over the next few decades, but this past
summer architect Brett Tuer and local
Construction Company, Duggan and
Hanlon, helped the Logan’s finally realise
their vision for the latest incarnation of
Diana Alpine Lodge.
Thanks to an opportunity that existed
through the Federal Government, Diana
Alpine Lodge successfully applied for and
was granted funds through the Tourism

Quality Projects (T-QUAL Grants)
Program for a project to upgrade facilities
to expedite all-season operation.
The premise of the project was to create
a more appealing product that would
reinvigorate the lodge and benefit clientele
by upgrading and creating more userfriendly guest facilities; upgrade two guest
rooms and create two new guest rooms
that better serves guests’ expectations at a
4 star rating. The project also increased the
capacity to accommodate employees on-site.
Furthermore, the project enabled the existing
dining room to be opened as a public
restaurant and incorporate a multifunctional
space alongside it which can be adapted for
the different guests and seasonal needs while
making the most of some remarkable alpine
views and the natural light.
After more than 20 years of operating the
lodge, it has become increasingly evident
to Lisa that there is a need to increase the
period of operation beyond the key winter
months to ensure long term viability. The
expectations of guests have increased more
dramatically in recent years, and exposure

New Listing - Chinook
T
his is an extremely rare opportunity
to purchase a luxury free standing
alpine home, which has been
beautifully refurbished and has low
outgoings. The total renovation was done
by quality local tradesmen (familiar with
the snow environment) during the summer
of 2013 - 2014.
Chinook has a long alpine head lease of 32
years. It is currently listed in the Alpine
Luxury rental pool - however can be used
solely for private use should the lucky buyer
decide to do so.
The configuration is four bedrooms, three
bathrooms and comfortably accommodates
between eight and 12 people over two levels.
The entry level features a foyer, large ski/
drying room, separate laundry, large utility
room with desk & TV, spacious bedroom
with excellent natural light and bathroom.
Upstairs features the beautiful open plan
living area with lovely views, private

also located quite close to ski/rental shops
and some of the resort’s finest dining
establishments.
As an all-year-round resort and holiday
destination, Falls Creek has a lot to
offer. World class mountain bike trails
have been constructed in the resort
and more will be opened up in the next
couple of years. This has led to lots of
fun for locals and adds amenity and
attraction for visitors.
We then have the fully sealed Bogong
High Plains Road giving access to the
fabulous high plains, the Mitta Valley
on the other side - including the Blue
Duck and Payne’s Hut (Google it).

summer in Falls Creek a nice time to be
here. The Dragon Boat festival; the Rapid

12°C cooler temperatures on those stinking
40°C summer days in the city.
