A Message from the Superintendent of Schools
Superintendent
Jose L. Parra, Ed.D.
It is hard to believe,
but the 2012-13 school
year is quickly drawing to a close
here in the Lockhart ISD. When
students, parents, trustees, district
educators, and the community
come together on May 31, 2013 for
Lockhart High School’s graduation, we fully anticipate seeing approximately 300 students receive
their diplomas. As those seniors
come to a close of their high school
experience, now is a fitting time to
reflect upon several key initiatives
that have occurred this year.
One key instructional tool that
was implemented this school year
is the Renzulli Learning System
(RLS). The RLS provides teachers and administrators with a way
to help ALL students have access
to enrichment and exploration, regardless of whether the student has
been identified as “gifted” or not.
We began research to determine
how gifted education processes
could be applied in the larger, traditional classroom setting. The
result was identifying the Renzulli
Learning System, an online tool
that is based on student personalization and differentiation. After
students complete an online survey,
an individualized profile is developed for each student that reveals
each student’s preferred interests,
learning styles, and expression
styles. Teachers can then use this
information to personalize and inspire learning.
A deeply-held belief in the LISD
is that of reaching, engaging, and
propelling the “Big Middle” group
of students who typically perform
“in the middle” academically.
Typically, they do not qualify for
program enrichment or challenge.
Without targeted enrichment, engagement, and exploration, the
“big middle” can easily regress in
performance and love for learning.
The Renzulli Learning system
was implemented this year with
all 1,100+ students in the junior
high school, and all elementary
identified gifted/talented students.
Next year we will have full implementation with all elementary
school students as well. There is
no additional work for the teacher
as all the resources are online and
automatically keyed to the teacher’s learning objective.
The goal for implementation is
to engage and stretch all students,
but also to give teachers one more
tool for learning about their students and reaching students on an
individual level. In turn, teachers
will be better able to communicate with parents on a more personalized level about their child’s
interests, learning styles, and expression styles.
A second major initiative now in
motion involves career readiness.
In the LISD “career readiness”
means that all students can seamlessly transition from a high
school learning experience to any
workplace experience in our local
community or the regional community.
To accomplish that seamless
transition, LISD is one of four
districts in the nation that has implemented SureScore’s Campus 2
Careers web-based platform as a
way to strategically connect students to both the local and regional business communities. The
goal is to broaden students’ career
readiness beyond limited skills
training in an occupational area.
SureScore’s technology helps
LISD students identify their individual workplace skills and preferences, professionally represent
what they can offer prospective
employers, and then systematically – and safely – pursue internship
opportunities that appeal to them.
The added-value that SureScore’s
platform provides is that prospective employers can also systematically recruit students whose workplace skills and preferences match
the employers’ workforce needs.
LISD’s overall academic success
is a result of identifying methods
and technologies that help individualize learning experiences for
all students to be successful.
Whether that experience involves
Renzulli Learning Systems,
SureScore’s Campus 2 Careers, or
the INOVA Process, a systemic
approach for using data to drive
change and improve performance
(by disaggregating data to the individual student level and then
putting into place interventions
and supports for each student), is
irrelevant. They all lead to the
District Goal: student success.
Clearly, innovations such as the
ones I’ve mentioned are important
to the District as it continues to
grow and evolve in meeting student needs. The one tried-andtrue element in LISD’s success
has been, and will continue to be,
committed educators who are determined to do everything in their
power to help students be successful in whatever they pursue.
We thank you for your support
of the Lockhart Independent
School District, and we thank
your children for another fabulous
year!

Student Success…
Who is this Lucky the Lion that puts on a great
show and loves to make people laugh, you ask? To
answer your question, inside that furry mascot suit, is
a young man who has loved mascotting since the first
moment he put on the smiling head. His enthusiasm
for mascotting and endurance garnered him and Lockhart High School the highest leadership mascot award
last summer at Universal Cheer mascot camp and
along with that a future summer job offer teaching Lucky, the Lion!
other mascots, which JT Lyman plans to pursue.
JT was born in Beaumont, TX and moved to Lockhart in 2009, just before
his freshman year. Growing up in Houston and Lumberton, TX throughout
his elementary and junior high years, JT, from an early age, developed a
love for the arts and entertainment. JT Lyman admits he probably inherited
a comic gene and uses this creativity to keep him going as Lucky. Probably
his biggest influence came from his grandfather, who was a clown in the
Shrine circus and a member of the Shriner Oriental Band during his retirement years. As a young boy, JT would accompany his grandfather to many
events and ride with him in his novelty car, participating in local parades in
the Dallas and North TX area. Daddy Ted taught his grandson magic tricks
which JT perfected and used to entertain the neighborhood during his elementary years in Houston, TX. During his Houston years, JT enjoyed interactive theater and developed a love for music and cartooning. After a family
move to Lumberton, TX, JT stayed involved in theater, art, music, swim
team and scouting.
JT recently obtained the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 215 in Lockhart,
and credits his fellow scouts and troop activities for helping him with his
endurance as mascot.
Another person that has had a big influence on JT has been his brother,
Cameron, who has a keen interest in history. Throughout their childhood
years, the two brothers have enjoyed reenacting and as adults recently participated in the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Galveston on the Strand for
the Galveston Historical Foundation. Spending his early years on the coast
with his family has sparked an interest in the ocean, and JT has been inspired by his father to pursue a marine education and career path.
According to JT, his greatest goal is to become the captain of a large vessel
and to pilot that ship around the world, traveling to different countries and meeting people on every face of the
globe. Most importantly, he wants to help people wherever he goes and have a positive impact on every person
he meets. JT credits his outstanding teachers at Lockhart High School for helping him maintain his GPA and
has been accepted to Texas A& M Galveston where he
plans to pursue a marine science degree with a third mate license option through the Texas Maritime Academy.

The public is encouraged to attend Board meetings, including any Special Called meetings. Meeting
