To Our Loyal Readers,
I
n 2002, Archaia broke new ground in a very congested marketplace
by committing ourselves to publishing only the very best highend original concepts, stories and artwork that we knew meant more
to readers than the typical run-of-the-mill superhero-versus-villain
storyline or the latest fad licensed property. We are proud to say,
eight great years later, we have not lost our way at Archaia. In fact,
Archaia has compiled an impressive backlist of titles that includes
Mouse Guard, Days Missing, Gunnerkrigg Court, Artesia, The Killer,
Awakening, and Fraggle Rock.
We are often asked, “What qualifies as an Archaia title?” To us it
is simple: a timeless story that respects the readers’ intelligence and
desire for sophisticated content, matched by unparalleled artwork and
production values. Equally as important is Archaia’s presentation of the
material; From digest-sized books to gorgeous coffee table volumes,
Readers have come to know Archaia as the only publishing company
to focus solely on reproducing our material in high-quality hardcovers.
Whether the subject matter is a mouse or a zombie, the year is 836
BC or 3011 AD, the genre is historical fantasy or pulp noir, Archaia is
committed to growing the audience for the graphic novel medium by
bringing readers some of the best and most forward-thinking sequential
storytelling in the industry.
Now, looking forward, we have re-committed ourselves to
broadening our horizons even further by bringing in more amazing
original concepts from seasoned and first-time creators around the
world. We are extremely excited about our upcoming publishing
schedule, which includes breathtaking new graphic novels such as
Return of the Dapper Men, Killing Pickman, The Dark Crystal and The
God Machine, as well as the return of perennial favorites such as Mouse
Guard, Fraggle Rock, and The Killer, with many more surprises in store!
We hope you will continue to enjoy Archaia titles as much as we
enjoy publishing them and look forward to sharing countless new
stories and new worlds with you in the future!
Sincerely,
PJ Bickett

ute and cuddly on the outside, but ferocious
to the core, The Ele-Alta and the Cropones
engage in endless escalating battle no matter
the cost! After two races lay claim to the island
of Berona’s most desirable piece of real estate:
the land called Amity. Eventually words turn to
rage, rage turns to battle—and a battle turns to
a war that will consume the land. Berona will lay
witness to all that greed has to offer!
Anthony Coffey, out of Texas, draws everything
from Ele-Alta. Jesse Labbé, out of Mississippi,

something to one-up their artistic rival. The
results are nothing short of full-blown war!

Mexican “coyote” Diego Busqueda is forced
to cross his entire family through “The Devil’s

one family’s basic need for survival against
the contemporary political theme of antiimmigration and the curse that has plagued

eus is the king of the gods, and he has
something of a reputation. A reputation
based on a simple truth: he’s a cad. An
unrepentant, philandering cad, and it’s been
driving his wife, Hera, nuts for years. In a
passive-aggressive act of revenge, Hera places
a spell on Zeus—a spell that causes him to fall
in lust with every inanimate object in sight. It
was a night Zeus doesn’t remember, but he’s a
god, after all, and so his seed took root.
Eighteen year later, Zeus’ unnatural hybrid
bastards have come of age! All that these
misbegotten, quirky oddballs want is the love
and appreciation of the father they never knew,
and they’ll go through Hades and high water
to get it!

elieving himself unencumbered by his

mission, and it isn’t long before that very mission
leads Niko down a path of self-discovery: is he a
faithful royal bodyguard, or a for-hire yojimbo? A
perfect warrior, or a soulless weapon?
44
I ARCHAIA 2010
In Volume Two, For A Few Rubles More, Niko
returns with Yuri Bronski and Cherokee Geisha.
The three yojimbos journey deeper into the
Badlands of this bleakly dystopian future world,
where sometimes the one and only currency
that can satisfy a debt is blood. Hallucinogenic
tadpoles, Black Legion mercenaries, Beppe the
Gangster, the Queen, Digital Djhitis, and a drug
deal gone very wrong are just the beginning of
the troubles facing our heroes. When his fighting
skills are needed the most, Niko is confronted
with his equal and maybe his even better—the
enigmatic Mister Saint Just!
A steampunk samurai mash up of western and
eastern influences, Robotika blends meticulous
storytelling with a Heavy Metal sensibility.

brothers and sisters are each entrusted
with an ivory rune by a dying shaman, and told
never to use the stones together or else face the
consequences brought on by the destructive
forces contained within the magical runes. Four
immortal brothers and sisters, four Archons,
leaping through time, consumed in an epic
struggle to influence and shape the history of
Western civilization. Their’s is a secret history, an
occult war that has shaped our entire world.
Volume One of The Secret History intoduces the
Archons, Erlin, Dyo, Reka and Aker, and some of
their Players, important figures of common history
whom have been influenced or even used by the
Archons. From Moses’ challenge to the Pharaoh

to the origin of the Grail myth; from the Pope’s
extermination of the Cathars to Nostradamus’
travels in Italy; from the Spanish Armada and the
Great Fire of London to Napoleon’s conquest of
Egypt; and finally to the Angel of Mons appearing
over the trenches of World War I, this first volume
covers world events from the dawn of time to the
year 1917.
In Volume Two, the focus is on the first half of the
20th century and the approaching second World
War. Past rivalries amongst the Archons must be
put aside as a fifth Archon, William of Leece, has
emerged and his single desire is to either bring
the world under his rule or watch it as it burns.
Whatever the outcome may be, it is certain that
history will be owned by the victor.

n the year 2031, mankind’s survival instinct is
put to the test when a civil war in China spirals
into global conflict. Nations are destroyed.
Millions are killed. And for many, like US Air Force
pilot Alec Killian, survival will mean shedding
some of his humanity in exchange for biotech
and machine.
The Sino Conflict heats up as the Jade Army
continues its relentless advance across China.
The Union is desperate, the Allies can barely
hold their ground, and looming on the horizon
is the specter of all-out nuclear war. Caught in
the middle of this maelstrom are the men and
women of Phoenix Squadron, a group of US
Air Force fighter pilots who have sacrificed
some of their humanity for the advantages of

cybernetic enhancements, a program known as

In the second volume of Titanium Rain, the
war gets bloodier, the stakes get higher and
new secrets are revealed about the true nature
of the Prometheus Initiative. Like the war itself,
will Prometheus lead mankind ever closer to
destruction? Or is this the dawn of a new age?
In the spirit of books and films such as Ghost
in the Shell, Innocence and Blackhawk Down,
Titanium Rain follows one pilot’s journey through
mankind’s worst, only to discover its best.
To be
alive is to be at odds with the world. Man against

A Word with Tom Sidell
Creator, Writer and Illustrator of Gunnerkrigg Court
How did you come up with the idea for
Gunnerkirgg Court, and why did you decide to do
it as a webcomic?
The idea for the story came from a sketch I drew of
what would become [Antimony]. I'd been looking
for a story to work on for some time and I thought
she looked interesting enough to try making a
comic about. I knew the web was the only way
anyone would see the comic, so after I had a few
pages down and got into the swing of things, I put
it online.
Did that influence the way you told your story?
Not really. I knew I wanted to release it in a fairly
standard format page by page. I wasn't interested
in making a comic that was web-specific or that had
some crazy update schedule. I was only interested
in telling a story, so I pace it as a normal comic and
release it three times a week one page at a time.
Did you ever dream that you would see the series
in print?
That wasn't a concern at the start. It was my first real
comic and my first goal was to just see if I could work
on it at a regular pace. Luckily the format I'd chosen
helped with printing later on down the road, but
that was coincidence. Getting readers was another
step and that turned out quite well after a while.
Getting to print was something that happened by
chance, really. I think if it had been my goal from the
start I would have driven myself crazy.
The star of Gunnerkrigg Court is Antimony Carver.
How would you describe her?
Annie starts out as a very stoic girl. Her experiences
at the Court cause her to open up and come out
of her shell by dropping her in at the deep end in
certain situations, be it dealing with a trickster god,
or just making friends with another girl in her class.
The first book reveals many of the mysteries hidden
in the Court and introduce the main characters. The
second book shows Annie and Kat getting to work
solving these mysteries and growing as individuals.
How does Antimony’s broad cast of supporting
characters help define her?
The supporting cast is there to offset Annie's
personality. Kat in particular is more of a second
main character, and she is basically the opposite of
Annie in every way. This is really what draws the two
of them together. There is a lot either one of them
wouldn't have been able to do on their own.
How would you describe your drawing style? Who
are your art influences?
I don't think I have any specific artistic influences, I try
and pick things up from every artist I like, and there
are quite a few of them. My drawings have been
described as very "manga-ish" by people who don't
know anything about manga, and very Western by
people who like Japanese comics, so make of that
what you will. I just wanted to make something that
looked appealing, but not too serious. I experiment
a lot with visual styles in the comic, and the art has
come a long way since the beginning. I hope it will
continue to evolve as I work on it.
Some people enjoy Gunnerkrigg Court as a
webcomic, some as a book, and some enjoy both.
What is your preference?
Having the comic online means I get feedback
right away from people who like it and makes the
whole project seem more like a real thing. Having
the books as physical objects is great though, and
I've been hearing from lots of people the world over
who have bought them, or found them in their local
library. Comics are a hard sell at the best of times,
and webcomics even more so. Showing someone
the books is a great way to make the comic seem
like more than a nebulous concept. The webcomic
will always be there as long as I have a job to pay to
keep it online, and I hope it will be until the story is
finished.
INTERVIEW
I 53
A Word with Michael McMillian
Creator and Writer of Lucid
Congrats on making your comic book writing debut
with Lucid! As a new player on the scene, what kind
of comics did you grow up on? Were there any
comics that you feel have influenced your writing
of Lucid?
My first official comic book was Amazing Spider-Man
#304, which I actually have framed and hanging over
the desk where I’m writing Lucid. Amazing SpiderMan was my “gateway drug” to comics…There was a
great year in college when Alan Moore’s ABC books
and Warren Ellis’ Wildstorm stuff kicked off, and those
series really recharged my love for reading comics. I
think I’m writing Lucid to the 20 year old me who’s still
sitting in the back room of my Pittsburgh apartment
reading Promethea and Planetary.
As an actor, you’ve seen what makes good, compelling
content. How did you use this when writing Lucid?
What was it like learning how to write a script for
comics?
One thing I find myself doing, and this definitely
comes from my acting background, is speaking
the dialogue from Lucid aloud. It can be about
outrageous, fantastical stuff, but if it doesn’t roll of
the tongue—it isn’t working. I want my characters to
sound like they are actually talking.
Has Archaia been helpful in bringing you up to speed
with scripting for comics?
I have to continually remind myself that a comic script
is essentially instructions for the artist, and I think
I’ve gotten stronger as the 4 Issues have developed.
Having said that, I want all of my scripts to be good
reads. What can I say? It’s hard work, but fun. Archaia
has definitely got my back. My editor, Paul Morrissey,
has been a very reliable partner in this process!
How long have you had the world of Lucid in your
mind?
I’ve been cooking up Lucid for almost two years now.
A few elements, such as The Ambrosian Order and
the character of Wren existed in earlier forms in a
54
I ARCHAIA 2010
pilot script I wrote a couple of years back. I guess I’ve
wanted to do something in the magical realm for a
while now.
What makes it so perfectly tailored to be told as a
comic book?
I’ve gotten really bored with Hollywood’s and comic’s
current obsession with ‘beginnings” and constant retellings of origins. I thought it’d be fun to start the
book at the climax of a Matthew Dee adventure. Start
the story with the end of the last one, you know?
It worked for Indiana Jones- maybe it will work for
Matthew Dee.
What are the "rules" of the world of Lucid?
Lucid takes place in a world that is very similar to our
own. Most people just go about their mundane lives,
never giving the larger, fantastical world a second
thought. Then there is a small fraction of the population
that have the natural gift to conduct magic. But then
there is a teeny-tiny fraction of those people in Lucid's
world who are like Mozarts of this type of phenomena.
They go well beyond the abilities of your average
tarot-card reader. These are Mages.
Your collaborator, Anna Wieszczyk, has a very
distinct art style that belies many influences. Did
you always imagine the series depicted that way?
Anna was drawing, intentional or otherwise, from
a tradition that’s directly linked to classic fairy tale
illustrators like Ivan Bilibin, Honor C. Appleton, and
Margaret Evans Price. That is something I never
predicted, and yet felt so right for Lucid. It’s extremely
inspiring when an artist shows you something you
didn’t expect and immediately fall in love with.
What would you say to someone who's on the fence
about adding Lucid to their pull list?
Lucid is going to be a fun, offbeat, entertaining read
with cool characters and fantastic artwork. It’s comics
for people who love comics. What else do you need
to know?!
