We are the music-makers - University of Baltimore
"We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams Wandering by lone sea breakers, And itting by desolate streams; World-losers and world-forsaker , On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the mover and shakers Of the world forever, it seems. ' Arthur William Edgar

of
the Graduating CI....
Today your names will be added to the long list of meR and
women who have earned degrees in liberal arts. business
or law at the University of Baltimore. The earliest entries
in this log date from 1928, when the university graduated 38
students who had completed the three-year evening law pro
gram. (Later consolidation with the Baltimore College of Com
merce extended this list back to the I 880s. ) Now, sixty-two
years after graduating its first class, the University of Baltimore
has more than 30,000 alumni.
But the significance of this occasion is not that you are one
of many. but that you yourself have achieved a worthy goal.
These commencement ceremonies are a public recognition of
that accomplishment, and demonstrate the university's pride
in your achievement. On behalf of the faculty, administration
and alumni. congratulations.

CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES
At this Commencement, degrees are conferred upon persons who completed requirements
in December , 1989. Prior to the printing of this program, however, it was not possible to
determine who had completed degree requirements . The listing of December, 1989 candidates
is therefore tentative . The diploma of the University, signed by its proper officers , remains
the official testimony to the possession of a degree.

SYMBOLS AND PAGEANTRY
COMMENCEMENT
Commencement is the special occasion that provides public recognition of academic
achievement of students. The diploma is an official document certifying the completion
of curricula required for an academic degree.
THE SIGNIFlCANCE OF ACADEM]C GARB
The approved academic attire comprises a cap, a gown, and a hood . The basic article
of the attire is the gown, which is black in color for all degrees . Cotton poplin fabric is
used for the bachelor's and master's gown, and ribbed rayon or silk is reserved for the
doctor's gown.
The hood has become the colorful standard bearer of academic symbolism. It iden
tifies the level of the degree, the academic field of learning in which the degree was
earned, and the institution that conferred the degree. The color or colors of the lining
of the hood indicates the institution that conferred the degree and the border color
represents the faculty or field of study in which the degree was awarded. The hood
varies in length according to level of degree; three feet for bachelor's and three and a
half feet for master's. The hood is trimmed in a border of velvet either two inches
(bachelor 's) or three inches (master's).
The approved cap is the mortarboard or Oxford cap-a stiff board nine inches square
with a silk cord tassle attached to a button in the center of the board. The cap is always
the color of the gown.
THE PROMINENCE OF THE MACE
The mace, carried by the senior marshall to lead the ceremonial procession, is a
symbol of authority. The University of Baltimore mace is 42 inches tall , crafted
of silver and wood, and bears the seal of the university. The mace originated in the
middle ages as a heavy armor-breaking spiked club used to conquer an enemy.
HONORS DESIGNATION
Undergraduate students are awarded degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or
cum laude based on their cumulative grade point average.
Summa Cum Laude-with the greatest praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with highest honors, 3.90 grade point average.
Magna Cum Laude-with grade praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with high honors, 3.75 grade point average.
Cum Laude-with praise
Phrase used to signify graduation with honors, 3.50 grade point average.

CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES
At this Commencement, degrees are conferred upon persons who completed requirements in
May 1990. Prior to the printing of this program, however, it was not possible to detennine who
had completed degree requirements. The listing of May 1990 candidates is therefore tentative.
The diploma of the university, signed by its proper officers, remains the official testimony to
the possession of a degree.
NOTICE For your own safety, LOOKfor the nearest EXIT. In case of
emergency, WALK, do not RUN, to that EXIT. By order of the MAYOR
AND CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE.
SYMBOLS AND PAGEANTRY
COMMENCEMENT
Commencement is the special occasion that provides public recognition of academic achievement
of students. The diploma is an official document certifying the completion of curricula required
for an academic degree.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ACADEMIC GARB
The approved academic attire comprises a cap, a gown, and a hood. The basic article of the attire
is the gown, which is black in color for all degrees. COllon poplin fabric is used for the bachelor's
and master's gown, and ribbed rayon or silk is reserved for the doctor's gown.
The hood has become the colorful ·standard bearer of academic symbolism. It identifies the level
of the degree, the academic field of learning in which the degree was earned, and the institution
that conferred the degree. The color or colors of the lining of the hood indicates the institution that
conferred the degree and the border color represents the faculty or field of study in which the
degree was awarded. The hood varies in length according to level of degree; three feet for
bachelor's and three and a half feet for master's. The hood is trimmed in a border of velvet either
two inches (bachelor's) or three inches (master's).
The approved cap is the mortarboard or Oxford cap - a stiff board nine inches square with a silk
cord tassle attached to a button in the center of the board . The cap is always the color of the gown.
THE PROMINENCE OF THE MACE
The mace, carried by the senior marshal to lead the ceremonial procession, is a symbol of authority.
The University of Baltimore mace is 42 inches tall, crafted of silver and wood, and bears the seal
of the university.
HONORS DESIGNATION
Undergraduate students are awarded degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude based on their cumulative grade point average. Summa Cum Laude - with the greatest praise Phrase used to signify graduate with highest honors, 3.90 grade point average. Magna Cum Laude - with great praise Phrase used to signify graduation with high honors, 3.75 grade point average. Cum Laude - with praise Phrase used to signify graduation with honors, 3.50 grade point average.
