Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center has
reached the milestone of celebrating its 65th
Anniversary this year! Celebrating 65 years
of anything is a rare accomplishment and
something that should make us all proud.
An anniversary such as this is a great time to
reflect on our history as well as our future.
I believe Children’s Therapeutic Learning
Center is an agency that consistently rises to
the occasion. When faced with challenging
circumstances,
Children’s Therapeutic
Learning Center has proactively sought
out and seized opportunities. We have
overcome every challenge because men
and women of good will, keen minds and
strong hearts have always stepped forward
to support the agency with their time, talent
and treasure. The current Children’s TLC
Managing Board of Directors and staff
have initiated a strategic planning process.
The goal of the project is to fully assess
services available to children with disabilities
in the community, identify potential gaps
in services, and analyze opportunities. The
process is long and hard but will end with
decisions based on best practices, data and
the needs of young children with disabilities
and their families having their needs met.
By establishing this ongoing process of
identification and review of opportunities,
we are ensuring the future of the agency for
65 more years. Final recommendations to
the Board of Directors in regard to program
changes are expected to occur by the end of
the year, with changes/additions to agency
programs and services to occur in 2013. We
are all excited about the future of Children’s
TLC and the possibilities that await us.
- Alan Murray, Executive Director
COUNCIL FOR DIVERSITY AND EQUALITY
IT’S SCHOOL TIME AGAIN!
Some of you might be feeling excited and
maybe a little sad that summer is over.
The Children’s TLC staff always look
forward to this time of year. Every fall,
Children’s TLC is filled with the familiar
faces of returning families along with
new faces of parents that are just starting
at the preschool with their children. Our
parents who have children with special
needs know getting ready for school
means more than packing a lunch, filling
a backpack, and getting them to the bus
on time. Our parents know and hope this
might be the day my child sits up, this
might be the day my child walks, this might
be the day my child uses a fork, holds a
crayon….this might be the day my child
says his first word. These are milestones
to most parents, but to some, these are
miracles. We are looking forward to a
bright new school year filled with lots of
learning, lots of fun, and lot of successes
for our children.
A big thank you goes out to Shook Hardy
& Bacon for holding a school supply drive
to ensure our children have the items they
need to succeed this year!
2.
Earlier this year a group of staff self identified themselves to be leaders in the
agency’s cultural competence activities. Now known as the Council for Diversity
and Equality, they have been meeting on a monthly basis with consultants, Dr.
Jose Reyes and Sharon Goolsby. The agency’s work with the consultants is
part of a larger community-wide Cultural Competency Initiative funded by the
REACH Foundation, Healthcare Foundation of Greater Kansas City and the
Jackson County Mental Health Fund. Activities thus far have focused on the
scope of responsibilities for the council and defining cultural competence for
Children’s TLC. After hours of dialogue the following definition was agreed
upon by all members:
“Cultural competency is the genuine commitment and continuous journey
toward awareness, respect and acceptance of individual differences.
Children’s TLC works together as a team to recognize the potential and
unique abilities of all.”
The initial work and planning by the council culminated in six hours of facilitated
discussion with all staff in August. We look forward to a productive and rewarding
journey in the months to come as we learn more about ourselves, strengthen
how we work together as professionals, and increase our skills in working with
children and families regardless of our differences .
SAYING GOODBYE TO SOME AND HELLO TO OTHERS
“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss
Nothing has such an impact on the
success of Children’s TLC as our
Managing Board of Directors. After
six years of service, three Children’s
TLC Managing Board Members have
completed their final meeting. These
three people will be greatly missed. They
are incredibly talented and committed
to the children we serve. Dedication,
honesty, empathy, and passion are
all qualities that define Erika Dickey,
Laura Hederstedt and Todd Reiser. We
will miss their daily contribution to the
Erika Dickey
agency but look forward to remaining
connected for years to come.
As we say good-bye to these incredible
individuals we say hello to five new
board members - Fred Hall, M.D.,
Kristen Page, Polly Prendergast, Nate
Shada and Mathew Weaver. Each
brings a different expertise and will give
great ideas and has the spirit of public
service to help guide Children’s TLC.
We thank all of them for supporting
Children’s TLC.

Todd Reiser
NAEYC
On July 12th and 13th, the preschool program underwent a reaccreditation site visit by the National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The agency is visited by an assessor once every five years and submits written
reports annually. During the two days, the assessor observed in four classrooms and reviewed extensive documentation
that had been compiled to demonstrate how Children’s TLC meets or exceeds each of the standards. Each classroom
prepared a portfolio of documentation using photographs and narrative to show how they provide a quality early
childhood education for children. The program portfolio demonstrated compliance with the hundreds of administrative
standards related to organizational and program policies and practices. The site visit was an opportunity for staff to
showcase the excellent work done on a daily basis within the preschool program and staff did just that. While a final
report won’t be received for ninety days after completion of the visit, we anticipate a positive outcome resulting in an
additional five years of accreditation.
Children’s TLC knows
that everyone has a talent to give.
We are committed to involving volunteers on many
levels and for many reasons. Volunteers participate
in and enrich all of our programs and services.
Special thanks to the many volunteers we have
through out the year.
Time is valuable, and volunteering should be an
empowering experience. Volunteer opportunities
are endless. Become a volunteer today!

CHANGES AT CHILDREN’S TLC
“Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse.
To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.”
- King Whitney Jr.
• Beginning in September, Children’s TLC will begin serving toddlers from 12 to 24 months of age in a new toddler classroom with the agency’s Therapeutic Preschool. The new classroom will help the agency accommodate 10 additional
Early Head Start children.
• In November, Children’s TLC will initiate Home-Based Early Head Start services for up to twelve children age birth to three. These children will receive services during weekly home visits to the family home and participate in monthly socialization groups at the agency with all other participants.
• This past May, Children’s TLC was notified that contracts for the Wyandotte County Infant-Toddler Services (WCITS) program would be placed up for competitive bid for the state fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012. Children’s TLC and two other entities submitted proposals and made formal presentations as a part of the rebid process. In the end the contract for Lead Agency and Fiscal Agent was awarded to Kansas City Kansas Public Schools. This transition occurred on July 1, 2012. While the loss of the WCITS program poses significant challenges for the agency, Children’s TLC remains extremely proud of its performance in serving as Lead Agency and Fiscal Agent of Infant-Toddler Services in Wyandotte County over the last six years. The number of children referred to the program has dramatically increased, client satisfaction has drastically improved, and the program is now financially profitable.

SHAWSIE BRANTON LEADERSHIP SOCIETY
We believe the environment Children’s TLC has had the privilege and stewardship to create is a place of beginnings. As the
new school year starts we need your help to continue our mission. Please consider joining the 2012-2013 Shawsie Branton
Leadership Society. This Leadership Society established in 2007 recognizes individuals who care enough about Children’s
TLC to make a minimum gift of $1,000 annually. Your annual gift or a monthly commitment of $83.33 charged to your credit
card, can, and will impact the children we serve.
All Shawsie Branton Leadership Society Members are invited to join us for a special reception recognizing your generous
contribution on Thursday, October 11th at the Kansas City County Club. This delightful reception is a wonderful opportunity
to mingle among friends in an intimate setting. Formal invitations will be mailed in September. For more information or

DUCK DERBY
GROUNDHOG RUN
Thank you for helping make the 2012 Duck Derby a
splashing success!
We would like to thank you for adopting ducks to help make
this a successful fundraiser for Children’s TLC. With the
support of the community we were able to raise funds to
make a difference in the lives of the children that we serve.
We would also like to thank Schlitterbahn Kansas City
Waterpark for hosting the 2012 Duck Derby. Everyone had a
splashtastic day on June 24th as we watched Wilkerson Crane
Rental drop the ducks to race for great prizes. We would
also like to thank KC Hopps, Ltd for welcoming us into
their family for the third year to act as our official adoption
locations during the month of June.
2012 Duck Derby Chairs: Stephanie and Robert Aschentrop
Hunt Midwest and Children’s TLC will be expanding the
