Supervisor of the Quarter: Maria Sampson
Maria Sampson, Orlando VAMC
Supervisor of the Quarter, is working far beyond the responsibilities
of a supervisory assistant. She
has incorporated within her workset many duties that are usually
regulated for administrative officers. She not only manages her
assistants she supervises; but also
interacts directly with other Service
Chiefs within the organization.
She has as developed a Dental
Budget Tracking System that is utilized by the Dental service and has
been implemented hospital
wide. This was done in conjunction with the Senior Industrial Engineering Design Team from UCF as
a year -long project and was also
presented to VISN 8. This tool allows for the fund control point data
from VISTA to be exported into a workable excel database that can be
updated in real-time for accurate analysis and reading. She has full
programming ability with Microsoft Access and has programmed a barcoding system to be utilized with our lab database and a RVU productivity tracking system for the lab technicians. She also has created
programs via SharePoint to track all Dental purchasing for supplies,
RME, and equipment.
It’s been quoted, “She is a level 5 leader and we as a service feel confident in the succession planning that she has implemented that will
carry our service forward in the future.”
The Employee of the Month committee congratulates Mrs. Maria
Sampson (nominated by Flerida Lara Cruz and Mischa Thompson) for
a job well done!

Now is your time to get involved with events related to the
dedication of the facility at Lake Nona.
Sign ups have opened for three events that will need volunteers to be successful. If you are interested, click the link for

Employee of the Quarter is Lloyd Duran, a VITAL Peer
Outreach Coordinator.
In response to the awards Lloyd wanted to provide this
statement; “This seems like a big achievement, which it
is, but this was not something I accomplished absolutely
on my own. Veterans had already been establishing their
outstanding reputation at the lab. Because of this, a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory reached out
to me, claiming that the veteran techs were always the
first to be picked up by researchers because of their work ethic and problem solving
skills. This can be related to our responsibility to our veterans at the Orlando VA
Medical Center. Typically, we see veterans when they are in need of help or having
trouble functioning in a wide range of physical and mental health. Our job is to improve their health so that they can return to the community as highly functional as
possible. The development of this program is evidence that a well-functioning veteran can be an asset to the community, pointing out the importance of our role as
healthcare providers is to the veteran and our society.”

Customer Service Motivational Tip of the Week
There is nothing more beautiful and powerful than a smile that has struggled through
the tears. Don’t regret your time, even the moments that were filled with hurt.
Smile because you learned from it and gained the strength to rise above it. In the
end, it’s not what you have been through that defines who you are; it’s how you got
through it that has made you the person you are today, and the person you are
capable of being tomorrow.
Don’t lose hope.
Everything happens for a reason & you never know what tomorrow may bring.
Pearls of Wisdom
Q. Each year the organization publishes a new Look Alike Sound Alike (LASA)
and High Alert Medication list. How do I know what is on the list for 2015?
A. The LASA and High Alert Medication lists meet the TJC requirement for informing
staff about meds that may increase errors or adverse events with patients. Annually,
the list is developed by reviewing various data and expert sources. The list is available in MCP 119-21 as well in CPRS under Tools- Clinical References.

Lake Nona Activations Update
With the transition to Lake Nona, many employees require access to the new medical center in order
to complete various tasks associated with the activation of the facility. Please remember that this is
still a construction site and that in order to provide security for staff and patients all exterior doors to
the Clinic Building will be kept locked at all times, except the first floor west garage entrance and the
first floor front entrance of the outpatient clinic building. These entrances will be open Monday
through Friday 5am to 7pm. If you need to temporarily access the Clinic building on a different floor,
please contact the VA Police to unlock the door. The DT and Hospital Building are still under control
of the contractor, and access to those sites should be coordinated thru Lawrence Tucker, or Laura
Finfrock, in Activations.

The medical center activation team provides a weekly status update for Lake Nona facilities each
Wednesday following morning report, and conducts a Lake Nona Integrated Planning Team session

those events in the 675, and throughout the activation process.
