Honor for manning artillery pieces during this

Col Eugene Carr (Pic 3) directed deployment of his
command & held his ground, under fire of shot &
shell in which he was several times wounded. Later
he was in command at Cibique Creek against the
Apache. His military nickname was "The BlackBearded Cossack.” Pvt Albert Power (No Pic)
under a heavy fire went to the aid of a dismounted
comrade surrounded by the enemy, took him up on
his own horse, and carried him to a place of safety.

distinguished himself for coolness, bravery &
marksmanship while troop pursued hostile Indians,

Citation for Seaman Peter Williams (No Pic),
serving on board the U.S.S. Ironclad Steamer
Monitor, Hampton Roads, 9 March 1862. During
the engagement between the U.S.S. Monitor and
the C.S.S. Merrimack, Williams gallantly served
throughout the engagement as quartermaster,
piloting the Monitor throughout the battle in
which the Merrimack, after being damaged,
retired from the scene of the battle.

Rush (No Pics) persisted in penetrating the steamfilled room in order to haul the hot fires of the
furnaces and continued this gallant action until the
gravity of the situation had lessened.

Puller's son. Later he became 35th governor of

organizing unit during 34 hr enemy attack,
KIA. 2/24/1969, PFC Ronald L. Coker (Pic
2) assaulted enemy position and gave aide

going off in his hands without killing him,

and abandoned gun, mounted en barbette, at
Fort Haskell, being exposed to a galling fire

colors of the 51st Virginia Infantry. (During the battle he was captured and escaped
bringing a number of prisoners with him.)
Pvt Joseph B. Chambers captured the colors
of the 1st Virginia Infantry. Pvt George E.
McDonald captured a flag. Sgt Charles
Oliver captured the colors of the 31st
Georgia Infantry. Sgt Maj Charles H. Pinkham captured the flag of the 57th North
Carolina Infantry and saved his own colors
3/25/1865, Ft Stedman, Va (Continued by tearing
them from the staff while the enemy was in the
camp. Cpl George W. Thompkins captured the flag
of 49th Alabama Infantry from an officer who, with
colors in hand, was rallying his men. Capt Charles
H. Houghton repeatedly exposed himself voluntarily
to great danger, was 3 times wounded, and suffered
loss of a leg (His citation included Battle of the
Crater, 7/30/1864.) 3/25/1873, Turret Mountain,

(Pic 1 Below), at Lewis's Farm, seeing a brigade forced back by the
enemy, he seized his regimental color, called on his men to follow him,
and advanced upon the enemy under a severe fire. The whole brigade
took up advance, lost ground was regained, and the enemy was repulsed.

to the reserve brigade and participated with it in the charge which
repulsed the enemy; 2nd Lt Peter M. Boehm acting as aide to General
Custer, took a flag from the hands of color bearer, rode in front of a
line that was being driven back and, under a heavy fire, rallied the
men, re-formed the line, and repulsed the charge; Petersburg, Va,
Cpl Franklin W. Lutes captured of flag of 41st Alabama Infantry
together with the color bearer and one of the color guard; Gravelly
Run Virginia, Sgt William Sickles & Sgt Albert O’Connor attempted
capture of a stand of Confederate colors and detachment of 9 Confederates, actually taking prisoner 3 members of the detachment, dispersing the remainder, and recapturing a Union officer who was a prisoner
in hands of the detachment. (4/1/1865, O’Connor seized a stand of
Confederate colors, killing a Confederate officer in a hand-to-hand
contest over the colors and retaining the colors until surrounded by
Confederates and compelled to relinquish them.); Chamberlain’s
Creek, Sgt John Wilson & Cpl William B. Hooper headed off the
advance of the enemy, shooting 2 of his color bearers; also posted themselves between the enemy and the lead horses of their own command,
thus saving the herd from capture.
3/31/1899, USS New York, Chief Master at Arms John Stoke (Pic
Left), jumped overboard to assist in the rescue of Peter Mahoney,
water tender; 3/31/1901, USS Petrel (Pic Lower Left), Seaman
Thomas Cahey, Seaman Alphonse Girandy, & PFC Louis F. Pfeifer
(Private Louis F. Thies) exposed themselves to danger saving others
during a ship fire. 3/31/1945, Villa Verde Trail Luzon, Philippine
Islands, PFC William R. Shockley (Lower Center), maintained
position so comrades could withdraw, later found dead with 4 dead
