Marine Audio Technologies
The fullest line of Marine specific
entertainment products
When Clarion introduced the world to the concept of
marine audio entertainment more than a decade ago,
we made a commitment to offering high quality,
excellent value products that were designed from the
ground up to offer superior performance and reliability.
To this day, Clarion remains the most recognized name
in the marine entertainment and the first to offer
multimedia products for the marine environment.
As a pioneer in this category, Clarion has ensured that
our marine entertainment product line is complete. We
have two full series of speakers, source units,
subwoofers, amplifiers, and accessories. This mean
one-stop-shopping for you and your customer - saving
time and money.
Marine Source Units
For 2010, Clarion still leads the industry with a host of
marine products that set the standards and raised the
bar to the competition.
CMV1
The CMV1 is Clarion’s first marine DVD receiver and
sets the benchmark out of the gate for features and
connectivity. The CMV1 features our tried and true flip
down water resistant escutcheon and a stainless steel
chassis. This means that the CMV1 will last for years
and years. Customers at this level demand reliability
and Clarion delivers.
Clarion’s design team took extra care when coming up
with the feature set of the CMV1. In addition to a
6-channel preamp output, an audio and an A/V input,
Clarion has included a dedicated line level output. This
makes connecting the CMV1 to a television easy and
eliminates the need to adjust the volume of the source
unit independently to that of the television.
The CMV1 (along with the CMD6 and M309) feature
Clarion’s easy-to-use USB iPod Audio Direct feature.
To take control of your iPod-based music collection, all
you need to do is plug the USB cable that came with
your iPod into the USB port on the back of the unit.
You can now access all your favorite music via the
controls on the front of the radio. Store your iPod away
safely while the battery charges. It’s ready to go when
the fun on the water ends.
The CMV1 is a DivX 6 certified product. All you need
to do to enjoy your favorite DivX movies is burn them
to a DVD. The high-resolution 3.5” TFT display and
dual video outputs ensures that all your movies look
great. You can even play video from a compatible iPod
when you add the CCA723/CCA748 cable.
CMD6
The industry standard for marine CD receivers evolves
with each new generation of the CMD-series of source
units. The CMD6 is an AM/FM/CD/USB receiver that
shares the same water resistant technologies as the
flagship CMV1.
The CMD6 (as well as the CMV1, M309, and CMS1)
offer two remote control options. An infrared remote
control is included and you can add up to 3 of Clarion’s
new wired remote controls. Our new remotes now
feature IR receivers, so you can take your remote control
from the cabin to the cockpit and have full control over
your music in the palm of your hand.
Clarion introduced BBE MP signal processing to our
marine entertainment products in 2009. The CMD6,
CMV1, and M309 feature this sound restoration processor. BBE MP (Minimized Polynomial Non-Linear Saturation) analyzes the audio waveform and recreates high
frequency harmonics that are lost during digital editing
and mastering or through bandwidth compression to
MP3, WMA, or AAC formats. The results of BBE MP
processing is detail and accuracy that more realistically
recreates the live original performance. This feature can
be used on CD’s and lossless compression to extend the
frequency response to an incredible 24kHz.
M309
The M309 is a standard DIN-sized AM/FM/CD/USB
marine receiver that is far from standard. It features our
stainless steel rear chassis for the best in water intrusion
protection.
Many companies transform their regular automobile
source units into marine source units by simply painting
them white and using a reverse LCD display. Clarion
takes this one step further with a dedicated marine
optical transport - tuned to the low frequency vibration
characteristics commonly associated with activities on
the water.
The M309 (as well as the CMD6 and CMV1) are Satellite
Radio Ready. You can add either Sirius or XM Satellite
Radio by plugging in the tuner and interface of your
choice. Satellite radio functionality is fully integrated into
the units control functions. This makes for a simpler,
safer and more reliable installation as compared to
external units being used with an auxiliary input.
M109
The M109 may be Clarion’s entry level marine source
unit, but it’s far from entry level. The M109 features MP3
and WMA playback with ID3 Tag display, a 4-channel
preamp output and a front panel auxiliary input for easy

system expansion. The M109 is IR remote ready
(optional) and still features a HumiSeal coated circuit
board for extended life on the water.
CMS1
The CMS1 represents an entirely new and unique
source unit category for marine and harsh environmental applications. This two piece system is
comprised of an IPX-6 rated command center and
hide-away brain module.
The CMS1 is an AM/FM/Weather Band Digital Media
receiver with a built-in 40 Watts X 4 amplifier, USB
port, iPod interface port (audio only), Sirius SSP Direct
Connect Port, an auxiliary input, and a preamp output.
Also unique to the CMS1 is its electrical design. It
uses an EEPROM to store information, so it does not
require a constant power connection. This means,
when you turn off your boat’s ignition, the CMS1
doesn’t draw any current. This means there is no
chance of a dead battery.
The CMS1 is the perfect solution for boats that don’t
have room for a conventional source unit or for harsh
environments.
Feature Details
APX-5 Rated Water Resistant Escutcheon
The front panel of the
CMV1 and CMD6 feature
a flip-down design that
can withstand a 65 gallon
stream of water from a
1-inch diameter hose at
10 feet for 5 minutes.
This design eliminates concerns of water damage
caused by rain, splashes, and wash downs. This
design gives the user one-touch easy loading of CD’s.
You can rest assured of long lasting moisture protection with a least 10,000 duty cycles for durability.
IPX-1 Rated Stainless Steel Chassis
The CMV1, CMD6, and
M309 all features a stainless steel chassis design
to prevent water from
entering the radio and
damaging the circuitry
inside. Should there be a
leak above the radio (from a window or instrument
cluster, for example), water will supply run off the sides
and back of the radio. We have included a drip shield
over the wire harness connection to further reduce the
risk of water being able to infiltrate the radio.

Conformally Coated PC Boards
All Clarion Marine source units have had their circuit
boards coated with HumiSeal. This is a non-conductive
product developed to protect electronic components
being used in harsh environments from damage due to
moisture. This coating is one of the many reasons why
Clarion Marine source units meet the ASTM B117
salt/fog exposure specification.
USB Ports
The CMV1, CMD6, M309,
CMS1 all feature a USB port
located on a pigtail on the
rear of the source unit or
hide away box. You can
listen to all your favorite MP3
and WMA files by simply copying them to a simple USB
stick and plugging it into the unit. The CMV1, CMD6, and
M309 will even play AAC files from the USB stick, so your
iTunes collection is ready to go, even without your iPod.
USB iPod Audio Direct
The CMV1, CMD6, and M309
make it easier than ever to
enjoy the music on your iPod.
Simply connect the 30-pin
dock port to USB cable that
came with your iPod to the
USB port on the rear of the radio and you can enjoy all
your music with simplicity and ease.
Clarion offers the CCAUSB (USB Extension) cable to
provide easy access to the USB port on the rear of our
marine source units. Simply drill a 3/4” hole where you
want mount the CCAUSB. Once connected to the USB
port on the rear of the source unit, you have easy access.
Auxiliary Inputs
All Clarion marine entertainment units include at least one
auxiliary input. This means
you can connected external
audio sources such as portable satellite radio tuners,
DVD players, computers, or
high-end navigation and
chart plotting systems. The
CMD6 includes a pair of rear
RCA pigtails to let you connect
two sources. The CMV1 includes an audio input, as well
as an A/V input. The M309 and M109 have their auxiliary
input right on the front panel of the source unit. For units
with rear RCA auxiliary inputs, Clarion offers the
CCAAUX 3.5mm to RCA cable. A 3/4” hole is all that’s
required for mounting.
Marine Audio Technologies
Bluetooth Ready
The CMV1, CMD6, and M309 are Bluetooth
Ready. Simply connect the BLT370 and
enjoy high quality streaming audio from
your portable music player or MP3-equipped
cellular phone. You can even answer the
phone and the source unit will automatically
switch over to the phone conversation.
Satellite Radio Ready
The CMV1, CMD6, and M309 are
Satellite Radio Ready. This
means you can add Sirius or XM
Satellite Radio and have its control
and functionality integrated seamlessly with the source unit. The
above source units features Sirius
Direct - all you need is the SC-C1
tuner. You can also receive XM Satellite Radio when
connected via the CeNET port. The CMS1 is Sirius
Direct Connect compatible only.
1-Year Backup Memory
Clarion knows the use of a boat is quite seasonal. We
also know that having to reload your radio presets
each time you pull the boat out of storage is an inconvenience. All Clarion marine source units feature a
1-year memory back-up for radio presets.
Expandable
Clarion marine source units all feature preamp outputs
to allow you to add external amplifiers. It is well known
that trying to drown out the noise of a powerful motor,
the splash of water off the hull or the whistling of the
wind isn’t easy when out for a sail. Clarion’s powerful
marine amplifiers ensure that your music comes
through loud and clear.
Wired Remote Controls
The CMV1, CMD6, M309, and CMS1 are
ready for Clarion’s newly designed
wired remote controls. Choose the
MW1 (watertight black face with stainless steel bezel marine remote control,
LCD display) or MW2 (watertight black face
with stainless steel bezel marine remote
control). You can connect up to three
remotes to a single compatible source
unit with the MWRXCRET (25’ marine
remote extension cable) and MWRYCRET
(Y-cord).
The MW1 and MW2 remote controls also feature a
built-in infrared eye. You can use an IR remote control
for even more convenience.
Infrared Remote Control
The CMV1, CMD6, and M309 marine source
units include a wireless IR remote control.
The M109 is IR remote control ready, but the
remote must be purchased separately.
Clarion’s IR receivers have been designed and
tested to provide the highest possible level of
performance, even in direct sunlight. Enjoy full
control over your audio system from almost
anywhere on the boat.
Marine Speakers
One of the toughest challenges on the water
is to reproduce sound accurately, while
producing a product that can handle all the
challenges that Mother Nature throws
at it. Clarion marine loudspeakers are
well into their 5th generation, and each time,
we upgrade and improve their performance and
reliability. Clarion offers standard 6-1/2” speakers,
7-inch, 6” X 9” speaker, and both 8” and 10” marine
subwoofers.
ASTM B117: Salt/Fog Exposure Standard
This test was created to evaluate a products corrosion
resistance over an extended exposure to salt water. The
test involves subjecting a device (speaker for example) to
a spray in a closed chamber of a solution of NaCl ranging
in concentration for 3.5 to 20%. The second part of the
test involves bubbling compressed air through a humidifying tower containing hot de-ionized water. This recreates
a condition of 100% humidity. Clarion products subjected
to these tests must pass without corrosion, damage, or
failure.
ASTM D4329: UV Exposure Testing
This testing standard describes an evaluation of the
damaging effects of long term outdoor UV exposure. The
test subjects must withstand alternating cycles of 8 hours
of ultraviolet light exposure at 70 degrees Celsius,
followed by 4 hours of condensation at 50 degrees
Celsius, then repeated for extended periods of time in
multiples of 500 hours per test (up to 2000 hours). The
devices under test must pass without discoloring, fading,
chalking, or cracking.
BASF Luran 778T Chassis and Grills
All Clarion marine speakers include a synthethic rubber
mounting gasket to ensure water doesn’t infiltrate behind
the speaker. This not only protects the speaker itself
from damage, but the hull of the boat. All marine speakers feature Santoprene rubber surround at the outer
edge of the woofers for durability and flexibility in all
weather conditions. Coaxial marine speakers feature a
custom tooled Santoprene rubber gasket at the base of
105
Marine Audio Technologies
the woofer cone that seals the cone to the tweeter
mounting post. These three gaskets ensure there is no
way water can penetrate the speaker, causing it to fail
or your boat to be damaged.
Integrated Water Management System
Clarion marine speakers are not only
designed not to allow any water to
penetrate into the motor assembly, but
they included a water drainage
channel to allow any water that gets in
behind the grill to drain out. This helps Drainage Channel
to ensure that the speaker always sounds great, even
when being pelted by rain or washed down while in the
dock.
7-inch Marine Speaker
Clarion’s line of 7-inch diameter speakers set new
standards for marine audio entertainment. These
speakers were designed to the same strict tolerances
as our 6.5-inch speakers, but offer improved efficiency,
as well as improved bass output thanks to a 35%
increased in cone area.
The results of our efforts is a speaker that is 3dB more
efficient with dramatically improved low frequency
extension and smooth band to band performance.
Performance Series Speakers
The Performance Series of marine
speakers were developed to meet
the needs of demanding enthusiasts. The line includes
a 6.5-inch coaxial, a
7-inch coaxial, a 3-Way
6”X9” and subwoofers
available in 8-inch and
10-inch single 4-ohm voice
coils. These speakers (where
applicable) feature a 1-inch PEI
dome tweeter for excel- Performance Series Rotating Tweeter
lent reliability and extended high frequency reproduction. The tweeter mount itself can be rotated to allow
you to provide your customers with a fine tuned
installation that produces an excellent soundstage.
All Performance Series marine speakers feature a new
impact resistant grill design that exemplifies Clarion’s
dedication to looking as good as we sound!
Marine Series Amplifiers
As a leader in the design of high quality
mobile audio amplifiers, Clarion
offers two marine specific
amplifiers that let system
builders achieve almost
anything they can dream of.
The APX490M is a 4-channel
amplifier that operates in 4, 3, or 2-channel mode for the
ultimate in system design flexibility. The APX290M is a
stereo amplifier, but can also be bridged to power a
subwoofer.
Clarion marine amplifiers feature a tried-and-true Class
AB audio path that provides extremely linear frequency
response well beyond the audible spectrum while simultaneously providing coherent phase response for
enhanced realism and dynamics.
The APX490M and APX290M include many of the same
features that are found on our mobile audio amplifiers.
These features make the amplifiers easier to install with
reduced setup time and improved performance.
Wide-Range Variable Gain Control
Clarion knows that there are a lot of
different sources for an audio signal.
With that in mind, we have designed
the preamp input stages of our marine audio amplifiers to
be able to produce full power from an input signal
anywhere from 200mV to an incredible 6V. This provides
the utmost in installation flexibility and compatibility.
Precise Frequency Selector Electronic Crossover
Most manufacturers
take the inclusion of an
electronic crossover for
granted. A properly
tuned crossover can make or break the tuning of an
audio system. Clarion includes our PFS crossover on
our marine amplifiers.
The concept of the PFS crossover is very simple - you
look up the crossover frequency you want, then set the
dial based on the number of clicks of the control from one
extreme or the other. The control has 41 different detent
positions. This way, if you want the crossover set at
80Hz, you can look up the frequency in the chart (see the
Mobile Audio Amplifier section of this manual) and simply
turn the dial the appropriate number of clicks.
Where this feature really shines is when you are building
a 2-Way system. PFS lets you set the high and low pass
crossover points at the same frequency for smooth,
accurate frequency response without the need to run
back and forth from the listening position and the amplifier location.
106
Marine Audio Technologies
Thanks to the X10 multiplier switch found on the rear
channels of the APX490M, you can set the crossover
anywhere between 55Hz and 5.5kHz for maximum
flexibility.
Flexible Input Signal Sourcing
Clarion marine amplifiers are designed to
be easily integrated
into any entertainment
system. With this concept in mind, we include a
wide-range variable gain control to allow level matching to a variety of different sources, a source selector
switch on the APX490M and speaker level inputs on
both the APX490M and APX290M.
Speaker level inputs allow Clarion marine amplifiers to
be connected to any audio source - from the most
basic of OEM installed source units to 120V ‘home
audio’ style system. This allows you to add additional
power to existing speaekrs, add additional speakers or
even add a subwoofer without the need for expensive
interfaces.
The source select switch on the APX490M allows you
to run a single pair of RCA cables from a source unit to
the amplifier, and have that signal fed to all four
channels of the amplifier. This eliminates the need to
use Y-cables and it cleans up the installation.
Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Chassis
The heat sink on our marine audio amplifiers are
extruded from a large piece of aluminum before it is
machined and finished to our specifications. This
high-mass heatsink features fins down the side where
the output and power supply devices are mounted to
further assist in the radiation of heat from the amplifier.
Surface Mount Devices
The tolerance of an electronic
component can vary by up to
10%. This means that conventional amplifier designs
must take this into consideration and allow for flexibility in
accuracy and reliability.
Clarion has implemented the use of Surface Mount
Devices for most ofthe components inside our marine
amplifiers. Surface Mount Devices are smaller in size,
offer higher tolerances (typically 1%) and are most stable
under a variety of thermal conditions.
The result is a series of amplifiers that offers excellent
channel-to-channel symmetry for excellent imaging,
smooth frequency response and incredible realism.
Marine Accessories
The CCAAUX and CCAUSB were
designed for marine use and marine
environment. These input adapters
allow you access to rear located
inputs without complicating the
installation. All that is required is a
3/4” hole and either the CCAAUX or
CCAUSB can be installed in about a
minute.
CCAAUX
CCAUSB
Conformally Coated Circuit Board
To further help resist the
effects of humidity on the
electronic components inside
the Clarion marine amplifiers,
we apply a conformal coating
to the circuit board. This
silicone-based coating helps
prevent corrosion around the
connection between the main
circuit board and electronic
components.
