Getting there
Welcome to our region
Situated on the south coast, approximately halfway between Portsmouth and Chichester, our
interesting and unique area is an easy place to gain access to with excellent road and rail links. You’ll
find Havant and Emsworth just off the A27 near to the junction with the A3(M), about 70 miles from
London. For Hayling Island and Langstone, exit the A27 and take the A3023 over the bridge. Here
you’ll find a great place to get away from it, whilst still being right in the middle of it all.
A friendly welcome awaits you here on the
south coast in Hampshire. With over 3 miles
of beaches right on the doorstep, as well as
the safe open spaces and sheltered bays of
Langstone and Chichester harbours, our region
can offer the ideal relaxing break.
A vital starting point for any visit is to call in
on our friendly Visitor Information Centre,
where you can get all the latest information
and leaflets. The centre, based at Beachlands,
can help with booking accommodation,
whether you are after hotels, holiday villages,
self-catering or camping and caravanning sites.
Also on sale are a wide range of maps and
guides, gifts and souvenirs, postcards and the
Hayling Island DVD postcard.

Water, salt and fresh air have all determined
our future; we’ve been shaped by it, washed by
it, fed by it and – when the time and tides are
right – we play on it and in it. The area has a
fascinating history. The Celts thought Hayling
Hayling Island is all about the sea, recreation,
wildlife and relaxation; it was on Hayling
Island that the sport of windsurfing was born.
Emsworth serves as the gateway to Chichester
Harbour, with a charming town centre and
a calm harbour. Havant came about because
of the waters of the Homewell Spring, while
Waterlooville, well – there it’s all in the name.

even rumours of the Holy Grail.

Windsurfing
Hayling Island’s unique position in a relatively unspoilt spot offers a sense of
isolation and undiscovered territory. Its atmosphere takes you back to carefree
childhood days of summers in the sun and days you thought would never end. This
bell-shaped island measures just 10 square miles, is completely flat and has a
shoreline washed by shallow, clear waters.
The land might not roll but the sea does
and it was here, in 1958, that a 13 yearold local school boy called Peter Chilvers
took to the waves with a piece of ply-wood,
a tent flap and a curtain pole. The wind
caught his sail and windsurfing was born.
“It’s amazing” says Peter “that after all these
years the birthplace of windsurfing has
become a mecca for the sport. Conditions
on Hayling Island lend themselves to great
windsurfing. I loved the island as a kid and I
am still in love with it now. Driving over the
bridge at night when the water is high
is magical.”
Winter or summer, there’s always something
going on and lots to enjoy on this small,
fascinating island.
Bring your family…
Hayling Island is just right for families.
There’s plenty of family friendly
accommodation, including self-catering
properties, holiday villages and caravan and
camping sites.
Colourful beach huts line the seafront, or
Beachlands as we call it down here, which
boasts two award-winning beaches. Children
can paddle safely, play on the beach or
let of steam in the Adventure Playground,
while parents soak up the view over the
Solent. Alternatively, jump on board the little
train that runs along the front to Funland
Amusement Park.

Bring your sea legs…
At the home of windsurfing, watersport
enthusiasts of all abilities will discover the
ideal conditions for catching a wave – visit
in September when the island hosts the
National Windsurfing Festival. Sailors are
well catered for, too, with Hayling welcoming
the Laser World Championships in 2010.
Bring your energy…
A network of public paths or tracks provide
visitors with excellent walking and cycling
opportunities through rural countryside.
Horse-riding along the Hayling Billy Trail,
which follows an old railway line hugging
the West Hayling Local Nature Reserve, is
rewarded with breathtaking views. Drop
by the golf course for a round or two while
admiring the scenery or let of steam whizzing
around the skate park down at Beachlands.

There’s nothing like a sea breeze to make you
feel hungry and Hayling Island has a good
selection of eating options to tempt your taste
buds. Pop into a traditional pub for lunch or try
a local café or a delicious deli. Of course there’s
fish and chips, too – don’t even try to resist.
Bring your binoculars…
If its nature you crave we have an abundance
of flora and fauna to satisfy your needs.
Hayling Island is a paradise for bird watchers
and nature lovers; the harbours, coast,
marshes, oyster beds and wetlands provide
thriving habitats. You’ll find around two-thirds
of all birds on the British List here, and we’ve
got several nature reserves, Sites of Special
Scientific Interest and Chichester Harbour is an
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Seaside Railw
l During the war, this brave little island stood as a decoy for nearby
Portsmouth, drawing bombers away from military and naval targets. One of the
anti-aircraft gun sites on the Sinah Common has been restored and Mulberry
Harbour Dock remains, still sitting off-shore in Langstone Harbour, near the
Ferry Point.
l The 10th-century name for Hayling Island was Heglingaigai, which translates
to the Island of the Holy Grail – some say that it’s still hidden here somewhere.
l In July 1988, a strange animal known as the Hayling Swamp Cat was run
down by a car in West Lane. How it came to be there is a mystery to this day as
the species is normally only found in the Middle East. Further reported sightings
since suggest there may be at least one other still at large on Hayling Island.

Harbours
Langstone and Chichester Harbours were
once the haunts of gangs of smugglers.
Today it’s an important RSPB site
and winter home to the thousands of
wildfowl and waders.
Picturesque Langstone lies within the
Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. Walkers, cyclists, watersport
enthusiasts, nature lovers, yachtsmen and
artists all flock here to enjoy the surroundings.
Others come just to partake the great food
served at one of the two Grade Two Listed pubs
on the water’s edge, both with terrific views.

A long history of fishing, oyster
dredging, milling and boat building
has made Emsworth, which is located
on the shore of Chichester Harbour, into
the pretty little town it is today.
A stroll around Emsworth will reveal some
lovely quaint specialist shops from oldfashioned iron-mongers to art galleries. It
can be difficult to decide where to eat when
presented with the array of charming tearooms, traditional pubs, cosy cafés and
excellent restaurants – it will come as no
surprise that Emsworth was home to the
UK’s largest independent food festival from
2001–07.
DID YOU KNOW?
l P. G. Wodehouse of Jeeves and Wooster fame,
lived in Record Road, Emsworth for ten years. A blue
plaque marks his house.
l In nearby Warblington is the pretty 16th-century
church of St Thomas a Becket. Look out for the two
grave watcher’s huts, built to guard against body
snatchers.

If you want to take advantage of the great
outdoors, follow the Promenade for a relaxing
walk that curves between the Millpond
harbourside and Chichester Harbour. Or
explore Slipper Millpond and Dolphin Quay,
still a working boat yard. Emsworth is also a
popular sailing centre; you can bring your own
boat or alternatively climb aboard Terror, a
28-foot traditional oyster fishing sailing boat or
Solar, a solar-powered catamaran. If you want
to find out more about this picturesque town,
pay a visit to the Emsworth
Museum, located above
the Fire Station.

Spinnaker Towe
Now a thriving market town, Havant grew up around the ancient Homewell Spring.
The Spring, one of many in the area, led to the manufacture of parchment. It’s
said that this was used for the Magna Carta and the Treaty of Versailles, true or not
there’s no doubt that the pure white parchment was of the finest quality.
Havant is now a thriving market town, characterised by its fine
Georgian buildings and narrow weaving footpaths called Twittens.
Most of the town centre is a conservation area, which developed
from a junction of ancient thoroughfares dating from Roman times.
One of Havant’s most popular attractions is the award winning
Staunton Country Park. A great family day out with plenty to see and
do, including a huge greenhouse with exotic plants, a maze and the
children will just love feeding the animals at the Ornamental Farm. If
you want to get some exercise, visit our leisure centre and take part
in one of the many activities available or walk the 13-mile Staunton
Way that finishes at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. You can find
out more about the town’s past by visiting the free Havant Museum
and Art Centre on East Street.

Waterlooville
With a market in the precinct every Friday, small
shops and big-name superstores, Waterlooville can
keep dedicated shoppers happy for hours.
But if you want to give more than your wallet a work-out, you can
always nip into the leisure centre to test your sporting skills or do
a few lengths of the swimming pool. Dates for your diary should
include the Waterlooville Music Festival that runs from
12 to 20 June 2010 and on the Saturday 3 July 2010
the town plays host to the Waterlooville Classic
Motor Show.
DID YOU KNOW?
l The town was once known as Waitland End but
renamed Waterlooville in honour of weary soldiers
who stopped here for refreshments after the Battle
of Waterloo in 1815.

Once you are in the Havant area, you might not want to leave. But you could begin
your exploration with a trip on the Hayling Island Ferry that takes foot passengers
across to Portsmouth.

Take the lift to the top of the Spinnaker Tower
for some amazing views. Go shopping at
Gunwharf Quays then take a walk along the
front to Southsea. A must visit is Portsmouth
Historic Dockyard. Visit the three ships, HMS
Victory, HMS Warrior 1860 and Henry VIII’s
Mary Rose Museum. Look round the Royal
Navy Museum – but save some energy for the
interactive Action Stations!
Famous for its Festival Theatre, this historic city is
dominated by the spire of Chichester Cathedral.
The Pallant House Gallery has a great collection
of 20th-century contemporary British art.

Explore the 1st-century Roman Palace at
Fishbourne. It was unearthed by some very
surprised workmen in the 1960s.

Catch the ferry from Portsmouth to Gosport for
some unique attractions. Discover the secrets
of the deep at the Royal Navy Submarine
Museum, visit Explosion! the Museum of Naval
Firepower and take a walk in the woods to the
Living History Village where it’s always 1642.

Great for walking, the wonderful South Downs
National Park is an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty – if that’s not enough there are lots of
Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
From its hilltop, Arundel Castle watches

Watch craftsman demonstrate age-old skills
and crafts at the Amberley Working Museum.

Goodwood is all about horse racing and motor
sport, and also several colourful events that
