Die Mitglieder der JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY besitzen
Humor: Es gibt keinen Jacob Fred in der Band. Und „Jazz
Odyssey“ ist eine Referenz an das schräge Freejazz-Stück im
urkomischen Rock-Film "This Is Spinal Tap“. Viel wichtiger
jedoch: JFJO besitzt unglaubliches Potential. Das beweisen
ihre Stücke und besonders, wie diese gespielt werden.
Kraftvoll, intensiv und voller Erfindungsreichtum bewegt sich
das Trio im Electric Jazz (mit dem sie vor mehr als 10 Jahren
starteten) ebenso clever wie in der Akustikvariante. In
Amerikas Jam-Band-Szene haben sie dadurch eine ebenso
große Fangemeinde, wie sie sich gerade mit ihren jüngsten,
nicht weniger als großartig zu nennenden Alben das hohe
Lob des Jazzpublikums und der namhaften Kritiker von
Downbeat, All About Jazz, Jazztimes, Chicago Reader, New
York Times und vielen anderen eroberten.
Mit Piano und Fender Rhodes (Brian Haas), Drums (Josh
Raymer) und dem Oktav-Pedal-gesteuerten und oft wie
Gitarre, Violine und Keyboards gleichzeitig klingenden Bass (Reed Mathis) agieren sie derart vielseitig
und (in der Tat) einmalig, dass man dem Chef ihrer Plattenfirma Hyena Records nur zustimmen kann,
wenn er von ihnen als 'spektakulär' und 'jegliche Erwartung übertreffend' spricht. Der große Cecil Taylor
adelte JFJO nach einem ihrer Konzerte im Chicagoer Note Club mit dem Satz "Ihr bringt den Jazz
vorwärts in eine völlig neue Richtung. Danke!"
Und in diese neue Richtung führen nicht nur die zahlreichen Eigenkompositionen der Bandmitglieder,
sondern auch die genialen Coverversionen von Jimi Hendrix, Björk, den Flaming Lips und Neil Young
oder von Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck und Duke Ellington: Unter den Händen der JACOB FRED
JAZZ ODYSSEY werden sie zum Bestandteil des harmonisch und rhythmisch Interessantesten, was
der aktuelle Jazz derzeit zu bieten hat.
Mit seinem innovativen Sound gewinnt das Trio in immer kürzerer Zeit immer mehr Fans. Als Band
zusammen seit 1994, spielt die JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY inzwischen sagenhafte 200 LiveShows pro Jahr in den angesagtesten US-Clubs wie dem Yoshi’s in Oakland, dem Hot House in
Chicago und dem Blue Note in New York. Im September 2005 reiste die Band nach Brasilien, wo sie
vor einem 1.800-köpfigen Publikum beim ausverkauften größten Jazzfestival Brasiliens in Ouro Preto
'standing ovations' erhielt. Im November 2005 wurde die JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY dann
erstmals nach Europa eingeladen, wo sie beim Jazzfestival in
Tampere/Finnland begeisterte. Einladungen ins Bimhuis nach Amsterdam
und den Kölner Stadtgarten für das Frühjahr 2006 folgten, im Herbst 2006
spielten sie auf dem Jazzfest Berlin.
Ihr neues, im April 2008 erscheinendes Album "Lil' Tae Rides Again"
wurde vom Electronic Music-Visionär Tae Meyulks für Hyena produziert.
Es ist ihr bisher außergewöhnlichstes Album geworden: voller
atmosphärischer Klanglandschaften, minimalistischer Melodien und
gegenläufiger Themen – eine ungemein spannende Ausdehnung des
JFJO-Kosmos.

To say that JFJO’s music transcends boundaries and expands
minds is an understatement. Since 1994, JFJO has brought
their progressive, improvisational vision from the Midwest’s
Bible-Belt to many of the world’s finest music festivals and clubs.
Clearly in the midst of a sonic metamorphosis, the group’s
acclaimed, innovative bassist Reed Mathis has now added electric guitar to the mix. This has allowed JFJO to further explore
a more accessible sound based on more melodic concepts.
Released in the Fall of 2005 and recorded in collaboration with acclaimed producer Joel Dorn, The Sameness of
Difference is a 13 track collection of both covers and originals.
It is a living, breathing testament to the 13 years that the
ensemble has spent together. Throughout the album, the
band explores their influences and offers interpretations of
music by The Flaming Lips, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, Brian
Wilson, Dave Brubeck, The Beatles, Bjork and Jimi Hendrix.
On JFJO’s follow-up, Tomorrow We’ll Know Today, a
digital exclusive collection of live recordings from Europe
and America, JFJO is found pushing their music even further.
Improvisations such as “Nightlight” and “Gypsy Tea” create
ambient sonic tapestries based on melody and sweeping tonal
textures that sound like nothing you have ever heard.
Even the most cynical critics are blown away by JFJO’s
instrumental creativity, musical risk, and near telepathy on
stage. In the past 18 months, JFJO has travelled to Europe
three times for two dozen performances and have played
at major festivals all over the world. In 2007, JFJO is
working on their fourth album with Brooklyn-based Hyena
Records to create their most unique album yet.
