While most of them came in as strangers
on the first day of the opening retreat,
these 14 professionals from in and around
Wyoming County now have a group of
friends they can call on after just 6
months of Leadership Wyoming. They
have endured countless hours assessing
Wyoming County, boasting about our
assets and taking time to think about the
weaknesses we may have and how they
can be corrected. Each participant was
put through the Meyers-Briggs assessment to see how their personalities play
into teams they are on, whether it be at
work, or at home. Now, half way through
the 10 month program, this group has
developed a sense of pride in their County and all the things they can accomplish
together in the future.
The last few months, they have toured
some of our premiere agricultural
businesses, such as the Perry Veterinary
Clinic in Perry, DeLaval Direct NY in
Castile and VanSlyke’s Dairy Farm in
Portageville. The class has had time to
take a behind the scenes look at top
notch manufacturers such as Drasgow,
Inc. in Gainesville, Morton Salt in Silver
Springs, and Koike Aronson in Arcade.

students showed the opportunities that
exist if a student is interested in pursuing
any classes that are offered at the Mt.
Morris campus.
A quick scavenger hunt on the Main
Street corridor in Arcade opened their
eyes to just how much is offered to
shoppers and visits to local tourism
destinations such as Hidden Valley
Animal Adventure, Beaver Meadow
Audubon Center and the Charcoal Corral
reminded them how much we have to
offer our out-of-county visitors. The day
spent at Camp Hough is always a
memorable one, as it requires them to get
to know each other in ways that the tours
and discussions hadn’t. Whether it was a
fear of heights when on the ropes course,
or trying to come up with a way to get that
last person over the team wall, the group
put their all into cheering and encouraging
each other to get the tasks at hand
completed.
Future sessions include Government and
Criminal Justice Day, which features a
look behind the walls at Attica State
Prison and a sit down with the Wyoming
County Board of Supervisors; a day of
volunteering at Community Action and a
Leadership and Strategic Thinking Day.
The year culminates in December when
they will join the other 135 Leadership
Wyoming graduates.

It’s that time of year again! The Chamber & Tourism will be manning booths at both Apple-Umpkin
and the Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show (which is celebrating its 40th year this year!). We will be
distributing bags filled with member information to visitors at these events. How do you participate? Easy! Just bring up to 1000 pieces of collateral to our offices by September 11th and it will
be included in the bags. We plan on both events being bigger than ever this year based on the
number of visitors pouring into the county this summer looking to visit our “Best State Park in the
USA”, so this is a distribution opportunity that you don’t want to miss! For more information, or

FROM THE PRESIDENT—
It certainly has been a busy summer for Wyoming County! Whether you’ve had the time to
visit one of the farm markets; attend an event like Shake on the Lake; take a trip on the
Arcade and Attica; visit Letchworth State Park; or spent some time at the Wyoming County
Fair, I’m sure you can agree that Wyoming County has a lot to offer.
We’re proud to report that traveler spending is up 5.1% in Wyoming County over previous
years and the results are something to be excited about. Tourist spending represents $39
million in economic impact here and is generating $4.5 million is state and local sales taxes.
We are working hard to maintain a program that brings in the tourists, generates economic
activity, and improves the bottom line for local businesses. Thank you to all the business
owners in the recreation and hospitality industry, and in all sectors for working hard to make
your businesses real high value attractions for tourists and residents to visit every day.
We are working closely with our partners in economic development to expand, grow, and
enhance the offerings that we can share with tourists. The Wyoming County Rural Arts
Initiative is growing and expanding almost weekly and the possibilities of where the county
could be is almost endless. The project will help to generate new life into our Main streets
and downtowns, open new opportunities for local development and growth, and will act as a
catalyst for sustained economic prosperity for our communities and businesses.
We are very pleased to share with the membership several ribbon cuttings that we hosted
this spring and summer. Welcome to these new businesses, those who expanded and
changed ownership. Dream Lake Campground in Warsaw; Olive and Ink in Perry; Shine
Fitness in Attica; Artisan Villa Farmers’ Market in Warsaw; Paddock Breeding Service in
Warsaw; Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant in Warsaw; Canaans’ Butcher Block and Eatery in
Perry. This June we celebrated the 5th Annual Agripalooza at Broughton Farms in
Gainesville, NY. With 4,000 visitors in attendance, it was another record setting year of
welcoming everyone to an outstanding local farm. The Broughton family did an excellent job
as hosts and the day was a great success thanks to everyone who participated.
As we look to fall planning, I would like to remind all of our small businesses of two events
that will be here before we know it. We’ll be kicking of the 4th Shop Wyoming & Win contest
which begins Black Friday and extends to Christmas Eve. At almost the same time, we’ll be
celebrating the one day event Small Business Saturday on November 28th. This is a great
opportunity for county businesses to invite customers in and celebrate all that is positive
about our local business community. We’ll be running promotions and will have materials
again this year. Please stay tuned for more information on both events as we get closer to
fall. We welcome as much participation as we can get and encourage anyone with questions
to call the Chamber.

The Affordable Care Act has brought with it many changes in the way large businesses operate when it

9/15—Audience Based Marketing—What it is and How to Use It
The face of advertising is ever changing and keeping up with what is effective can be a full-time job. How
are people finding you? How are they looking for you? Come learn about the newest ways consumers can
fund your business. 9:00-11:00am, at Genesee Community College, Warsaw Campus (115 Linwood Ave).

9/17—Notary Public Prep Class
Everything you need to know to be prepared to take the Notary Public exam. 9:00am—12:30pm, at the

10/6—Holiday Small Business Marketing
Holidays demand the most creativity for small business marketing as many businesses generate over 50% of
their revenue during the holiday shopping season. Participants will learn social media, email marketing and
traditional marketing tips. 9:00-11:00am, at the Chamber Office. $20/Chamber member, $35/General Admission.
11/5—Six Week Top Line Performers Leadership Seminar
Top Line Performers is a boot camp that builds at the individual level by developing high profile skills and
attitudes that drive revenue, increase productivity and cut your training budget at the same time. Class will
be taught in six 3.5 hour sessions at the Chamber. More information to come.
