ages get a new look
that you can try at
home. Sheree Mutton

quite like starting the
New Year with a fresh
change. Along with new
goals, it’s also a good
time to update your look.
Ready for a change, four women
who work for charities supported by the
Priceline Sisterhood Foundation raised
their hands for a major hair and make-up
makeover. According to make-up artist
Nicola Johnson, updating your look is
easier than you think. “Our skin generally
looks better in the summer months, so
swap your heavy foundation for a tinted
moisturiser,” advises Nicola. “Switching
your lipstick is another easy change – if you
always go for a nude colour, try a red lip.
“And swap to a cream blusher for a
more youthful dewy look – cream blushes
can also double up as a lip tint.”
Rebecca Nee, 38
PERINATAL ANXIETY AND
DEPRESSION AUSTRALIA
(PANDA) AMBASSADOR
After struggling with post-natal
depression following the birth of her son
Cooper, Rebecca looked to PANDA for
advice and help. She recently gave birth
to her second son, Corey, and now Rebecca
is giving back to the organisation that
supported her through a dificult time
as a spokesperson.
MAKE-UP: “Rebecca has a heart-shaped
face so I kept the contour quite high to
balance her features. Taking the contour
too low on heart-shaped faces can make
the face appear too pointy,” says Nicola.
“I love a two-in-one contour palette.
I used the darker shade in the palette to
create depth under the cheekbone and
the lighter shade on the cheekbone itself
to lift and highlight this area,” she says.
“Using a bright lipstick is a fun way of
adding colour to your look and most
people can wear a variation of an orange
lip. If you have warm skin like Rebecca
[yellow undertones] you can wear anything
from neon orange to a red/orange. If you
have cool skin [pink undertones], then opt
for a peachy or coral colour. Rebecca has
this incredible platinum blonde hair that
indicated a playful side to her personality,
so I wanted to have some fun with her
make-up. I teamed the bright lip with a
liquid liner, which is perfect for an evening
party look. A bright lip can also be worn
in the day. For a more toned down
version, I would advise skipping the liner,
applying a neutral eyeshadow, curling the
lashes and two coats of mascara.” To add
more of a glow and natural lushed look,
simply brush on some blush.
HAIR: “This look is all about showing
off Rebecca’s hair style and lattering
her face shape,” says hair stylist Sarah
Laidlaw. “I started by dampening her hair
and working volume root lifter lotion
into the roots and mid-lengths. I blow-dried
to create maximum root lift and body at
the crown and around the sides, and just
a bit of lift on the front to allow it to fall
softly in the centre part for a modern
silhouette.” After using an iron on sections
of the hair, Sarah used her ingers to
break up the waves, before hairspray. >

As a key igure at ACCF, Julie aims to
raise awareness about cervical cancer
and support the women who are
diagnosed with it.
MAKE-UP: “Julie is in her 50s and
wouldn’t normally use dark colours
around her eyes,” says Nicola. “I wanted
to show her that with the correct placement,
she could wear eyeliner and smokey dark
shadows. Julie also has a heavy lid – like
a lot of people – and this can be very
daunting, as applying eyeshadow too
high up on the lid can look garish. It’s
important to use a neutral matt colour
on the heavier part of the lid, so as not

The newly appointed CEO and
mother-of-two helps transform
children’s lives both here in Australia
and developing countries.
MAKE-UP: “Irene has quite oily skin,
so we hydrated her face without making
it look too dewy,” says Nicola. “To bring
back a slight glow and to highlight her
features, I used a primer that gives a nice
matt inish.” Nicola also used a poreless
foundation to cover any imperfections,
followed by a highlighting palette to
brighten up the cheeks. “Irene has great
brows – I just needed to ill in the gaps
using a brow kit.”
A pinky lip crayon was glided on to
create a glossy inish. “It’s high-shine
and gives the illusion of a fuller lip,” says
Nicola. “A beautiful yet gentle smokey
eye was created using a volume mascara
and a nude eyeshadow palette.”
HAIR: According to hair stylist Sarah
Laidlaw, many women in their 40s feel
the pressure to chop off their longer
locks too early. “If you have healthy hair
and a face shape that suits longer hair
like Irene, there’s really no need to go

short,” she says. “I used a spray-on root
concealer in Irene’s hair. It covers those
grey roots and makes your hair look
freshly coloured.
“I also sprayed in a smoothing blowdry mist. It protects the hair from heat
damage while using tools. I straightened
the roots and then used a large curling
iron. She has natural body, so we
compressed it a little. I also used a
deining spray to create those naturallooking waves and inished off using
the crème to control the ly-aways.”

to accentuate it, and a soft, warm cream
or light taupe is perfect – nothing shimmery
or too light. I used a cream colour from
an eyeshadow palette. Then, using a
dark brown or black eyeliner, traced
along the top lash line, softening as
I went and taking it a quarter of the
way under the bottom lash line only –
this makes the eyes appear bigger.
“Then I applied the chosen shadow
– on Julie, I used a plum shadow from
the same compact over the liner, keeping
close to the lash line and blending up
carefully so as not to go onto the heavier
part of the lid. Plums and eggplant
colours are perfect for making brown
eyes pop.”
For Julie’s lips, Nicola used a light pink
lip liner and lipstick. Finally, a lengthening
and volumising mascara was applied to
amplify Julie’s lashes.
HAIR: “I started by nipping Julie’s hair
in on the sides with a little trim to show
off her cheekbones,” explains Sarah. “I
blow-dried with a paddle brush to give
movement and body, and worked the
hair forward.” Sarah trimmed a little
more on the fringe to soften Julie’s
forehead and bring the attention to her
eyes. “I illed in her grey roots with a
spray-on root concealer for a quick
regrowth touch-up,” says Sarah. “A
light shine spray gave the hair a healthy
gleam to inish the look.” >

soft, so I started by blow-drying with a
bodifying mousse and a large round brush
to create volume throughout. I sprayed
dry shampoo into the roots over the entire
head and brushed it through to give it
some lightness and texture. This look was
all about framing, with a wider shape
in the sides to latter Helen’s face shape
and a side-swept fringe to soften a high
forehead. A little back combing in the
roots to maintain body during the day
and I inished with a strong-hold hairspray
to keep her side-swept fringe in place.” #

VOLUNTEER AT ALZHEIMER’S
AUSTRALIA
Following her husband Gordon’s
dementia diagnosis, Helen has been
working as a volunteer to help support
others with the condition.
MAKE-UP: “Use a tinted moisturiser or
hydrating foundation designed for mature
skin,” suggests Nicola. “Look out for
serum foundations – they contain collagenboosting ingredients, acting as skin
treatments as well as a foundation. I used
a BB foundation on Helen, followed by an
eye brightener to soften the appearance
of dark under-eye circles. The skin
underneath the eye gets delicate as we age.”

Nicola applied a long-lasting eyeliner
and plumping mascara, but was careful
not to overdo it. “Smudge the eyeliner
out so it’s not a harsh line, then always
curl the lashes up and use a thickening
or plumping mascara. This will give the
illusion of thicker lashes.”
For the lips, Nicola opted for a bright
red lipstick. “Corals and sheer reds look
fantastic on women in their 50s and 60s.
Avoid matt colours, as they will make the
lips appear smaller. Pale pinks and lilacs
can also wash you out, so avoid those,
too.” Finally, Nicola applied some blush
to add a rosy glow to Helen’s cheeks.
HAIR: “Grey hair can be challenging
because it’s either baby soft or quite
coarse,” says Sarah. “Helen’s hair is baby
