News from the Office…
It’s November already! It’s hard to believe that we are closing in on the middle of first
semester and that report cards are going home on the 13th for all Senior Years students.
Middle Years students will receive the first of their three report cards on December 4th.
There is also a scheduled Parent/Teacher Conference on Thursday, December 11th for all
students, both Middle and Senior Years. Please call the office to make an appointment.
Feel free to contact your child’s teachers if you are not able to make this date. I also encourage you to contact teachers at any point throughout the school year if you have any
questions or concerns. They will be happy to help address your questions.
Proud of all the initiatives and accomplishments,
Mr. Ilchena, Mr. Penner, Mrs. Blocker
Did you know...
…our school sponsors a child in Ethiopia?
The Human Rights Group holds a Hat and
Pajama Day every month to raise money to
sponsor our child, Meselech. Students pay
$1 to wear a hat and/or pajamas all day, and
their money goes to supply food and clean
water in Ethiopia. And now you know!

ÉESS Social Justice Committee News
On October 29, before school started, twenty four students from École
Edward Schreyer School boarded the bus to attend We Day Manitoba at the
MTS Center.
Our school along with other schools as far as Thompson, The Pas and even
Gillam, Manitoba filled the MTS Center. We Day provides avenues in which
every person can find their place within the movement to create local and
global change.
The primary vision of We Day is intended to shift our focus from the self-centered “Me” to a more global
view “We”. With that vision in mind Craig and Mark Kielburger, the passionate and inspiring co-founders of
We Day, brought together like minded speakers and musical artists to inspire global change. Kweku Mandela,
Spencer West, Astronaut Dr. Dave Williams, Mary Robinson, Travis Price and Severn Suzuki were just a few of
the speakers that shared their vision of global change. The day was set up to run like a classroom and
speakers used the overarching goals of economic, technological, social and educational empowerment to
frame their messages of environmental protection, equality, anti-bullying, apathy, poverty and
homelessness.
Multiple award winning musical artists such as Hedley, Kardinal Offishall, Shawn Desman, Son Real, Neverest
as well as Keith and Renee energized the crowd and encouraged students to take the message of social
activism back to their communities to influence positive change.
Our students will continue to be leaders of social empowerment. Our first campaign is We Scare Hunger. All
the food will be donated to Beausejour Food Bank.
Everyone is also encouraged to download the We365 App. For every person who downloads it, Telus donates
$5.00 to Free the Children. The app
gives daily challenges and you can
track all your volunteer ideas and
hours on it! For more information go
to http://www.weday.com/
In the words of Kweku Mandela "It is
our responsibility to take care of the
Earth and the people we share it
with."

Guest speaker, Doreen Lundy from Together Building Africa, came to visit our
school on Monday, October 27. She spoke to our grades 6, 7 and also our grade 12,
World Issue class about the poverty in Bukavu, DR of Congo. Different classes have
helped support their school and have helped put a roof on classrooms.
ÉESS Winter Concert
Our friends from Congo gave us a
statue of 2 giraffes as a thank you
present for the items they
received from us last year.
The giraffes represent unity
between their communities
and ours.
Our ÉESS Winter Concert is on
Thursday, December 4th
at 7 pm at the BRRC.
Students should arrive at 6:20
pm in concert dress (black skirt
or pants and white shirt).

PRESS RELEASE
Boys AAA Provincial High School Basketball Championships
Boys AAA Provincial High School Basketball Championships
To Be Held in Beausejour
March 12th – 14th 2015
MHSAA (Manitoba High School Athletic Association) has selected École Edward Schreyer
School to host the Junior Varsity Boys AAA Provincial High School Basketball Championships --- March 12th – 14th 2015.
Competitive teams (approximately 150 participants) from across Manitoba (including the host
team – ÉESS Barons) will be in attendance representing their schools and communities at
this event. This is only the second time in our school’s history, that a High School Provincial
event will be held in Beausejour.
Beausejour is noted for its involvement in hosting, co-hosting or being awarded numerous
non-school provincial championships in various sporting events at all competitive levels. The
leadership, volunteer support and corporate/business sponsorship within and surrounding areas make it possible to run class A events. We’d like to ensure that this event is of the same
caliber. This championship will be an opportunity to promote our school and community to
visitors from across the province.
This event is a great opportunity for everyone and we look forward to corporate/business/
community and individual support to ensure this event is successful. Sponsorship requests
are being distributed; however, should you be missed and wish to become involved or require
further information, please contact the host convenors (below) or call ÉESS school at 204268-2423.

UPCOMING EVENT
Giving Voice
Written by and about youth in care
Performing at ÉESS on November 20th for all grade 9-11 students!
Giving Voice tells the story of Sally and Josh, two youth living in care. As they navigate their way through
the child welfare system, the audience sees how they face the challenges of their tumultuous family life,
how they deal with the trauma of apprehension, and how they adjust to the constant changes in their everyday lives. Ultimately the play peers into the lives of youth living in care, giving voice to their experiences
and depicting the impact the challenges have on their sense of self and their engagement with others.
What makes Giving Voice so unique is that it allows students to share their thoughts and suggestions
about situations that are played out in front them on stage. It is performed in Forum Theatre style. Forum
Theatre is a lively and effective way to look at and counter issues that our community faces today. After
the play is performed, scenes are replayed and the audience is able to stop the action and step in with solutions. This provides a chance for those watching to discuss what happens and participate in changing the
characters outcomes.
Background
Giving Voice was created in partnership with VOICES: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network as an interactive
theatrical piece exploring issues that youth in care have experienced from the stigma of being in care to
the transition to adulthood after care. The initial script was developed through forum theatre workshops
throughout the summer of 2013, which included work with over 30 youth in or from care. The script was
then previewed at FemFest 2013 as a staged reading. In November 2013, a test run took place in three MB
high schools. According to an article published in the Winnipeg Free Press in 2013, Manitoba has the highest rate of youth in care in Canada. With Giving Voice, we hope to begin a conversation with thousands of
students and teachers about the state of the Manitoba care system and the realities those involved in it
face.

Varsity Boys Soccer End of Season Update
After tying their last game with minutes to go. The varsity boys suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. Although the boys
lost, they still held their heads up high. Representing our school and themselves as individuals, they were proud to
have experienced a provincial opportunity. As their Head Coach, it was an honour to be a part of their experience and
I'm very proud of them on their achievements this season. - Mr. Wong, Head Coach Varsity Boys Soccer
