Dear Musicians and Directors,
We welcome you to the wonderful Kalahari!
It is our honor to be able to make possible this souvenir program. Get autographs,
write comments, and best of all, keep this for a lifetime remembrance of this weekend. You are all to be commended for making the effort to make this gathering so
special.
We also wish to thank the advertisers who helped to make this 6th Annual Band
Festival at the Kalahari program possible. In addition, we hope that you recognize
their company names, since they are committed to instrumental school music
programs not only in Wisconsin, but throughout the country. Don’t hesitate to
thank them via a comment through their respective websites as I know all of them
would love to hear from you and hear how important these two days have been
for you.
Congratulations to all of you for making this festival a growing success for so
many!

History of the “Band Festival at the Kalahari”
The festival began with a desire to create a quality music experience for
young band musicians that was both informative and fun. It was apparent
that a festival was needed that would allow students to strive toward a goal
of performing in a concert setting for an audience of peers, family
members and master adjudicators for this age level. The festival captures
the “teachable moment” by providing a clinic experience for the band
immediately following the performance involving musical performance as
well as discussion. Each band receives feedback from three adjudicators
in the form of a clinic, written comments and an audio recording with verbal comments. Along with
creating an opportunity for students to hear other band programs and concert literature, the festival
offers students the chance to socialize, eat pizza and enjoy the waterpark and/or indoor theme park
and other attractions at the Kalahari.
2013
The festival began in May of 2008 with eight bands participating in a one day festival. In 2009, the
festival became a two day event with twenty-one participating bands. In 2010 and 2011 the festival
grew to twenty-nine bands. Pictures of the bands were displayed on large screens in the performance
hall and live-streaming of the concerts was added. A choice of Waterpark or Indoor Themepark
passes was offered to participants. The 2012 Band Festival had thirty-seven participating bands.
“Band Festival at the Kalahari” t-shirts were added as well as a “Band Festival” program created and
sponsored by Ward-Brodt Music in Madison. The program contains information about each participating band and its members. This year’s 6th Annual “Band Festival at the Kalahari” includes fortytwo participatings bands from three states! New this year is the addition of a Percussion Clinician and
Conducting Clinician.
The 7th Annual Band Festival at the Kalahari will take place on April 3-4, 2014. For more information, please visit http://www.sunprairie.k12.wi.us/faculty/cpgleas/bandfestivalatthekalahari.cfm
