Tiempo Libre Two-time Grammy-nominated
Tiempo Libre is one the hottest young Latin bands
today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs
and dance venues, the members of the Miami-based
band are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of
the music of their native Cuba.

Tiempo Libre’s members were all classically trained at
La ENA, Cuba’s premier conservatory, during a time
when it was illegal to listen to American songs on the
radio. Seven extraordinary musicians came together
to realize their collective musical dream: to create
the first authentic all-Cuban timba band in the United
States. In Summer 2002, at their Ravinia Festival debut,
Tiempo Libre dazzled a crowd of more than 12,000
people. In Summer 2003, they shared a bill with
Aretha Franklin, performing before an enthusiastic
crowd of 20,000. Summer 2003 also included performances at the new Heineken Jazz Festival in Hua Hin,
Thailand. Return trips to Asia have included sold-out
shows in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia. Since that
time, the group’s busy touring schedule in the United
States has included performances at festivals and
venues in Miami, Oakland, New York, New Orleans,
Rochester, Houston, New Haven and Interlochen.
August 2005 brought Tiempo Libre’s European debut.
Among the highlights of that tour was Tiempo Libre’s
performance at the closing concert of the new Tuscan
Sun Festival in Cortona, Italy, where the band wowed a
sold-out house. Subsequent tours have brought soldout houses in Italy, Greece and Turkey.
In Spring 2007, Tiempo Libre embarked upon
another exciting project, the creation of a new work
– Rumba Sinfónica – for symphony orchestra and
Cuban band. The composition, a collaboration with
the highly respected Venezuelan classical composer
Ricardo Lorenz, was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Ravinia Festival
and Festival of the Arts Boca. Since the premiere in
Minneapolis in November 2007, Tiempo Libre has
performed Rumba Sinfónica in Ottawa, Dallas, San
Antonio, Syracuse, Philadelphia, Princeton, Atlanta,
Malibu and Charlotte, to mention just a handful.
In addition to their performing and recording
careers, the members of Tiempo Libre are
particularly committed to the sharing of their rich
musical traditions through outreach and educational
activities. Tiempo Libre has been part of the
artist-in-residence program at Michigan State
University and Interlochen Academy. The group has
also become known for its inspiring classes on rumba, Latin jazz and traditional Cuban music, designed
to reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Concert Singers of Cary,
Lawrence Speakman, Director
Founded in 1991, the Concert Singers of Cary is a
volunteer choral organization that provides a professional experience for musicians and audiences
alike. For nearly twenty years the organization has
been challenging assumptions of what a vocational
performing organization can accomplish. Under the
leadership of co-founder, conductor and artistic director Lawrence Speakman, the Concert Singers of
Cary operates a 130-voice symphonic chorus, vocal
chamber ensemble and two youth choirs. Known
for innovative programming, the Concert Singers
perform music from diverse traditions as well as
new and groundbreaking works such as Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, composed in 1995 and performed simultaneously with the 1928 silent film The
Passion of Joan of Arc, and William Grant Still’s And
They Lynched Him on a Tree, composed in 1939.
Lawrence Speakman is a graduate of Westminster Choir College of Rider University, where he
received a Bachelor’s of Music in Voice and Music
Education, and East Carolina University, where he
received a Master’s of Music in Choral and Orchestral Conducting. While at Westminster, he studied
conducting with Dennis Shrock and Joseph Flummerfelt and studied with Daniel Bara and Jorge
Richter at East Carolina. Speakman has had a rich
singing career, beginning at Westminster, where
he was a member and soloist in the 40-member
Westminster Choir and internationally renowned
Philadelphia Singers, a 30-voice all-professional
choir. He has prepared numerous programs for the
North Carolina Symphony and is a frequent guest
conductor with the Raleigh Symphony. In addition
to his duties as artistic director and conductor of
the Concert Singers of Cary, he maintains a private
voice studio and serves as director of music ministries at Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham. He
has served as chorus master for the Opera Company of North Carolina and continues his singing
career as a member of the Vocal Arts Ensemble of
Durham and The North Carolina Baroque Choir.

THE Ahn Trio Born in Seoul, Korea, and educated
at The Juilliard School in New York City, the members
of the Ahn Trio – sisters Maria (cello), Lucia (piano) and
Angella (violin) – are redefining the art and architecture
of chamber music, breathing new life into the standard
piano trio literature with commissioned works from
visionary composers like Pat Metheny, Kenji Bunch,
Maurice Jarre, Nikolai Kapustin and Michael Nyman.
Lucia, Angella and Maria thrive on dissolving the
barriers between art forms. They have fused
their work with that of dancers, pop singers, DJs,
electronic music artists, painters, installation artists,
photographers, lighting designers, ecologists and even
kite makers and received critical acclaim for their
collaborative project with the David Parsons Dance
Company. The Ahns were the only classical group to
be invited to perform at the iTunes LIVE Festival in
London, where Michael Nyman was a surprise guest
performing with the delighted Ahns (the live recordings are available on iTunes UK). The success of
their live performance at the Czech Grammys with
the Tata Bojs, an award-winning Czech rock band,
led to the Ahns’ recording a collaborative album,
Smetana, with the Tata Bojs, followed by a sold-out
CD-release tour in the Czech Republic.

written for them) with the China National Symphony Orchestra. They also performed the Chinese and
Korean premieres of Pat Metheny’s “Yu-Ryung,”
a work Metheny wrote for the trio. Next year, the
Ahns will premiere Mark O’Conner’s Triple Concerto as well as Nikolai Kapustin’s second trio (Kapustin
wrote his first and only trio for the Ahns).
Possessing an enviable combination of talent and style,
they have long been natural subjects for the international press. They made their magazine premiere in
Time’s cover story “Asian American Whiz Kids.” They
have gone on to frequent fashion pages in the likes
of Vogue and GQ. In 2003, they were named three of
People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People.Their first
recording of Ravel and Villa-Lobos trios brought raves,
such as Audio Magazine’s “this is one of Ravel’s best
and never better played,” and the next, an EMI recording of Dvořák, Suk and Shostakovich, won Germany’s
prestigious ECHO Award.
The Ahn Trio is in high demand, performing and
leading master classes and workshops across the
United States and around the world. Wherever the
Ahns go, they share their innovative spirit and everevolving vision of music. It is precisely this vitality and
commitment to innovation that has the Ahn Trio
continually drawing new audiences to classical music.

The Wizard of Oz
Constantine Kitsopoulos, conductor
The Wizard of Oz was a technical marvel for MGM
in the late 1930s. Today, the studio has stunningly
re-mastered the timeless classic. Brilliantly restored
images are accompanied by full symphony orchestra playing new transcriptions of Harold Arlen’s
brilliant lost scores. Judy Garland’s original 1939
studio recordings, backed by lush, live orchestration, will transport children and adults alike over
the rainbow.
With this version of The Wizard of Oz on the big
screen, moviegoers will be treated to the Oscar-
winning film as it has never been seen and heard
before. In summer of 2005, the program premiered
to sold-out crowds at Wolf Trap and the Ravinia
Festival. “It was an exciting evening, and the grander
message of this event was truly something I found
in my own backyard,” wrote Claire Marie Blaustein
in The Washington Post. “The five children sitting
next to me…had never seen the movie before.
They were as enraptured at their first sights of the
Emerald City as I was seeing it with new eyes.”
This program will be performed with one intermission.
