andifyouhaveabetteroneletmeknow.Soletstake
thebest irst,inmyopinionawarmrainwithaslight
breeze.Whenitisrainingandthebirdplanterrides
bymyhorseIcansmellthebirdsinhissack,andmy
noseisnotoneofthebest.Twofactorscomeintoplay
here,moistureanditiswarm.Letmegiveyouanother
examplepoorabucketofwaterontheground,ona
hotday,withnobreeze,andplaceabirdontopof
whereyouporedthewaterandbringadogintopoint
it.Thedogwillbeabletopoint360degreesaround
thebird.Whyyouask,becausewehavemoisture,and
scentriseswithheat.Nextletstaketheworstweather,
Fog,whyisittheworstyouask,becauseitiscold,and
weusuallyhavenobreeze.Coldpushesthesentdown.
Thenextworstweatherisastrongwind.Ihatea
strongwind,myhorsehatesitandsodomydogs.It
makesmyeyeswatermynosetorunandgivesmea
senseofinsecurity,butoneoldtimeroncesaid,BET‐
TERTORUNTHANNOTATALL,wecannotcontrol
theweather.
Lookatthesmokestackorthecarwiththebadex‐
haust,thesmokedissipatesveryrapidly.
Anotherexampleinagustywind,thedoggoeson
point,handlertriesto indthebird,suddenlythedog
goessoftonpoint,hemoveshisheadaround,what

suncameoutanditwaswarmandnice.Allthedogs
thatranthatdayhadgreatbirdwork,fromthem
camealltheplacementsforthatyearsNationalCham‐
pionship,notonedogthatraninthesnowstorm
placed.Iranallmydogsinthesnowstorm.
WhatIamtryingtodohereiseducateafewpeople
whojudgeFieldTrials.Letmerelateastoryofmany
yearsago.WewereatFortOrd,Ca.AndIwasoneof
thejudges.InthisonebraceanEnglishSetterwenton
point,bythewaythisismyfavoritebreedofbird
dogs.Myjudgingpartnerremarkedtome,Normhave
youeverseenamorebeautifulsightinyourlife.Ire‐
pliedno,butthewindisblowinguphisbutt‐hole.My
judgingpartnerhadnoideawherethewindwascom‐
ingfrom,hewasnotthinking,onlylookingathow
greatthestyleofthedogonpointwas.Thedoghad
beentrainedonthosegroundsandtheowneralways
putabirdinthatbush.
InconclusionwhatIhavetriedtodotodayismake
someofyouwhoareabletothink,tolookatthe
weather,lookattheconditions,andmaketheright
decisionwhenplacingthosedogsyouarejudging.
