Message from the
Mansfield ISD Education Foundation…
T
he Academic Recognition Banquet
evolved from the vision of Superintendent
Vernon Newsom, Board of Directors of the
Mansfield ISD Education Foundation and
Dr. Pete Karabatsos, consultant to the
Board. It was their belief that academic
accomplishments should merit recognition
and media attention. Through public
recognition of outstanding student
achievements, the MISD Education
Foundation intends to demonstrate
community appreciation to students,
teachers, and parents and to
acknowledge the valuable partnership
between home and school. It is also
intended to provide positive reinforcement
for younger students and a goal for which
they can strive.
The Academic Recognition Banquet also
recognizes the successful partnership
between parents and school that is vital
to a student’s education. The Board of
Directors applauds the role of parents
and their contribution to student
achievement.
The Board of Directors acknowledges the
other unique aspect of the Academic
Recognition Banquet, the role of the
community. Each table has been
sponsored by area businesses and by
friends of Mansfield ISD. The student, the
student’s parents, and the selected
teacher are guests of the table sponsor.
This prestigious event was made possible
due to the overwhelming generosity of our
corporate and table sponsors.
The Academic Recognition Banquet
includes recognition for Mansfield ISD
academic achievers and shows our
appreciation for their outstanding efforts
in the classroom day after day, evidenced
by their ranking as the top sixty students
in the Mansfield ISD Class of 2007.
The Mansfield ISD Education Foundation
Board of Directors welcomes you to the
fourth Academic Recognition Banquet in
honor of the outstanding achievement of
our sixty Distinguished Scholars and sixty
Distinguished Educators. Join us in
celebration of their talents and
accomplishments. The Board of Directors
would also like to extend appreciation to
all those individuals who made this event
possible.
One unique aspect of the event is that
each student is joined by a Mansfield ISD
teacher they have selected to recognize
because of the teacher’s positive influence
on the education of the student. The
Board of Directors salutes the teachers
of Mansfield ISD for sharing their talents,
knowledge and love of learning with our
children. Their dedication and caring have
truly made a difference.

Timberview High School
Teacher Don Snook
Timberview High School
Daughter of Moses Ademola-Ojo
University of Texas in Austin
Majoring In Chemistry/Biochemistry
I have known Mr. Snook for about three years. He was my
Pre-AP Chemistry and Pre-AP Physics teacher who
endeared in me the love of learning by making sure that I
not only got the correct answers on questions, but the
thought process behind the answers were also vital. Most
importantly, Mr. Snook has been an excellent source of
inspiration to me because of his leadership
qualities such as being hardworking and
selfless, always available to help,
confidence in his abilities, and love
for teaching are worth emulating.
Dear Mr. Snook, you will long be
remembered as the greatest of the
great teachers who have motivated
and shaped my future academic
pursuits.

Teacher Margaret Schwemer

Son of Doug and Linda Akins
Texas Wesleyan University or University of Texas at Arlington
Majoring In Accounting or Engineering
With Mrs. Schwemer, everyday was somehow fun. She
always seemed like she had a genuine interest in her
students and liked what she did. She had to teach us how
to take the TAAS test, but she made it as bearable as she
could, and in the end, it actually ended up giving us useful
skills. She worked well in our little portable, and
worked well with the teacher next door, at
times switching off and teaching each
other's classes. I have since used
every skill that I learned in that
class.

with a Track/Cross Country Scholarship
Majoring In Kinesiology or Education
Whether it was in study hall, on the court, or out on the
track, Coach Gray showed passion for what she did. In her
eyes, it was not always about winning the game, or getting
the time, those things are great, but she showed me that
the road to success, as well as a few good laughs, was
really the thing that mattered. As my first crosscountry coach, she instilled upon me a work
ethic and a deep sense of motivation
that has led me to many athletic
and academic successes today. It
is because of her passion and love
for what she does that I now have
a passion and love for what I do.

Mrs. Roberts was an amazing teacher, who not only taught
her students what they needed to know for her class and
the real world, but also made it fun and entertaining in the
process. She allowed me to take out of her B.C.I.S. class,
and UIL experience, skills on the computer I never would
have had, even if I were to take a college level
computer course. I truly enjoyed having her as
a teacher and coach, who contributed
to both my education and my life,
and I hope that she will continue
to play a positive role on the lives
of those who walk through her door.

Ms. Stockett has inspired me both in the classroom and

for my future career lies in medicine, Ms. Stockett has
masterfully intertwined the importance of history into my
life, teaching me to learn from the past in order
to change the future. From George
Washington's faithful cross of the

Majoring In Creative Writing
For the past four years, Mrs. Watson has been a teacher and
a mentor to me. During my first year on yearbook staff, her
guidance allowed me to proactively handle the stress of
deadlines instead of feeling inundated. In years since, I have
been able to apply this attribute in all areas of my life. I feel
Mrs. Watson's indefatigable patience and valuable
example have enabled me to become an
efficient leader for the staff. Without
her direction, I would certainly not
possess any of my managerial
skills. In addition to these qualities,
I have benefited from Mrs. Watson's
kind heart and sense of humor every
day in the classroom. I feel blessed

University of Texas at Austin or Rice University
Majoring In Architecture
Ms. Lucido opened my eyes for discussing the world around
us, and essentially how I could influence it and change it.
She respected everyone's individual opinion and never closed
a discussion until we all had a chance to say what was on
our minds. Our class discussed everything from politics to
pop culture, and we all learned from Ms. Lucido
and our fellow classmates. She is one of
the friendliest teachers I have ever
had, and I truly feel that I can talk
to her about more than just school
and our daily assignments. Ms.
Lucido has made me a more socially

her for that.

My fifth grade language arts teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was
more than just a teacher; she was a friend, a mentor. If
ever I had a problem, I knew I could rely on Mrs. Johnson to
inspire me to do the right thing. One could always expect a
smile on Mrs. Johnson's face. Mrs. Johnson has inspired me
to become a teacher and if I can be half as great as
she was, I will be an amazing teacher. Mrs.
Johnson, you are truly an inspiration.

Majoring In International Studies/Business
Mrs. Evans has been my academic counselor since
freshmen year and has always helped me in achieving my
goals. It was when I wanted to become a foreign exchange
student that Mrs. Evan’s guidance affected me the most.
She was always encouraging and helped in whatever way
she could. The same goes for when I came back from
France, for my senior year at Summit. Mrs. Evans
was there through all of it, being very patient
with my needs and me. She also cared
about me outside of just
academics, talking to me about
how I was doing on the swim team,
how my family was, and how I was
re-adjusting to life in America. I
appreciate all of it so much! I
wouldn't have been able to
accomplish the things I have the
past four years without Mrs. Evan's
guidance and support. Thank you

Mr. Cantu was a great teacher, and had the patience of a
saint. He treated me as an adult, but we could still joke
around and have a good time. He trusted me with his best
equipment which allowed me to make quality projects. He
even helped me and my group enter and win a few
contests. Whether we were shooting a project or dubbing,
Cantu was always with us every step of the way. Not
only was Mr. Cantu's class fun and interesting,
it was also career oriented and helped
me build skills that I will be able to

Kimberly Chapman

Teacher Toni Clarkson
Cora Spencer Elementary School
Daughter of Anneta Chapman
Texas Tech University
Majoring In Biochemistry/Pharmacist or Doctor
Mrs. Clarkson was my fourth grade math and science
teacher. Her class taught me the basics of math and
helped me build upon them through calculus today. I did my
first science project in her class; we had to make an
invention to help us in everyday life. I made an egg crack;
since then I have learned to crack eggs without
making a mess. The project taught me how to
think "outside the box" and learn how
not to procrastinate. Her class
really jump-started my education
and my interest in math and
science. Thanks to her, I have been
very successful in my middle and
high school classes.

Tarrant County College
Majoring In Math
I transferred to Summit in my senior year, so the school
did not really excite me. I felt that not many of the
teachers could get into my world and actually be my friend.
However, Mrs. Hendrix did it. I really appreciate the way she
teaches and the ways she interacts with the kids. I feel
that I am one of them; I am involved in her lesson. I
can never forget those experiments that we
did in there, it is so much fun and
worth remembering. She taught
me how to be myself in front of
others and how to enjoy the lesson
while learning. Therefore, I want to
thank Mrs. Hendrix and tell her that
she is my favorite teacher of the
year.

In all honesty, I really thought that Mrs. Ross was crazy
when I first met her. Not only did she trip over a cord and
crack-up laughing within the first five minutes of class, but
she then tried to convince me to write some bogus story
and to share it with a class full of people I had just met.
Little did I know, I had just encountered one of the most
inspiring and uplifting people I had ever met. Her
cheerful spirit seemed to be contagious as I
always found myself to be in
exceptionally good moods after
leaving her class. She taught me
to step out of my comfort zone
and to never hold back when given
the chance to express myself. Mrs.
Ross, I thank you from the bottom
of my heart for having been such a
wonderful and inspiring role model.

Mrs. Kebart is the kind of teacher everyone wishes for but
rarely finds. She is brilliant and steadfast. Mrs. Kebart set
an incredible example for me every day during fourth period;
in her, I see what I think nature intended for women to be
like: inwardly as well as outwardly beautiful complemented
by a certain courage of conviction and strength of
one’s heart, mind, and soul. Mrs. Kebart
made me feel empowered as a student
and as a person. I will never forget
what I learned from her not only in
regards to literature, but also to
life. She is fantastic – a true gift
to education and Mansfield ISD.

Not only was Mrs. Stevenson my favorite teacher my eighth
grade year, she has been one of my favorite teachers
throughout my thirteen years of education. Prior to her
class, all of my English classes had all been the same –
boring, dull, and easy. None of the essays or projects were
ever rigorously graded. I expected her class would
be the same and figured I wouldn’t have to
try to make a good grade. I was
wrong. Her class was very
different and I found that I would
have to work. She pushed us to
not only become better writers, but
better thinkers in general and we
soon learned what we were really
capable of. The things I learned in
her class definitely benefited me
throughout high school and I cannot
thank her enough for that.

I had thought that learning about the economy would be
boring and meaningless, but Mr. Ponce made it very
interesting. He always had a positive attitude even when he
was not feeling well or we were discussing a boring topic.
This helped prepare me for college, because I will look at
everything with a positive attitude, even when I do
not want to. I appreciate how he gives up
some of his free time to be the
announcer for football games and
graduation. It showed me how
much he cares for all of the
students. I think that is amazing. I
am very glad that I had Mr. Ponce

I guess the question would be…How hasn't my mom
affected my life? Time after time, she has sacrificed for me,
and without her, I would not be where I am today. However,
this banquet is not for great moms, it is for outstanding
educators, and that is why I picked her. A day does not go
by where I do not get to experience the concern, love,
and sincerity on my mom's face when she talks
about her classes, students, or just her job
in general. That passion is unique
and even though I give her a hard
time about being the teacher no
one wants to have because she is
so hard, I know that any student
lucky enough to have her as a
teacher will leave her class, a more
educated and tolerant person,
inspired to strive for their dreams.
You are an inspiration to students,
your fellow teachers, and I hope that
you will always remember how much
of a difference you continue to
make in so many peoples' lives. I
could never say thank you enough

you.

entered Ms. Circelli's class. Ms. Circelli's passion for the
language was contagious and I could not help but adopt it
as my own. Her seemingly endless knowledge, drive for
success, and risible humor are only a few of the elements
that make her an excellent teacher. Thank you,
Ms. Circelli, for teaching the Spanish
language in a perspective that is both
didactic and graspable. My
success on the AP test is an
accomplishment for the both of us.

Coach Cecil Marks has done something many teachers can
only hope to achieve; he has affected my life outside of the

life lessons he has taught me at not only school, but also
anywhere my feet take me. I look at both sides of a
situation or argument before making a rational
decision, and I do my best to lead with my
moral character, especially when
nobody is looking. Most
importantly, Coach Marks has
helped pave the way for my future

Mrs. Taylor was the first teacher to introduce how to have
fun while learning the necessary, although sometimes

topics concerning baseball to overlap with my studies,
giving me an interest in reading that eventually spread to
other genres. Mrs. Taylor was the height of
energetic personalities, never failing to peak
the interest of our class with aid

She entered every class with a

I have had three different classes, three semesters in a

including how easy it is to make really dumb algebra
mistakes. She would tell us that if we became doctors

be a doctor because somehow I “killed” many "patients"
in her classes. All jokes aside, Mrs. Dunham is a

grandmother, telling us that even she, with only one leg,
could still run faster than us. By the next practice,
grandma lost an arm, and by the end of the season, this
poor lady was limbless still running faster than us.
Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet this
extraordinary woman that motivated us every
day. Even though she may have seemed like
a crazed woman screaming and
running amuck up and down the
sideline, she did it because she
wanted the best for us. Her
intentions were simple, to teach us

Mrs. Ortiz was the teacher that turned me towards my
affection for the study of the sciences. She always taught
the subject with great enthusiasm and, of course, with a
smile on her face. It seems as if I was in her class all day,
for I had her for science, advisory and teacher's assistant.
Mrs. Ortiz became my favorite teacher for the sole reason
that she was always there to talk to...even after she
has played a mean trick on me with another
teacher. I will always remember Mrs. Ortiz
and the impact that she has had on
me as a student and as a person.

Ode To BenBarka
Mr. BenBarka has had the biggest impact in my
educational career because this year was the first time I
actually love math. He had this ability to integrate his
rigorous course with a sense of humor. Aside from Calculus,
his plumbing analogies and doughnut policies caused me
never to leave the class without a smile (and the added
calories). My greatest memory with Mr. BenBarka
is when he would say "Ms. Pham, up to the
board" with his stern voice. Even
though I would get nervous
because I did not know how to solve
the problem, I would write in
gibberish and say that the answer
was written in Chinese. If my pursuit
of becoming a doctor doesn't work
out well, I will want to become a
teacher in hopes that I will be able to
positively influence other kids like Mr.
BenBarka has done in his
remarkable career. I know Mr.
BenBarka will continue to be an
everlasting influence to others after
his retirement. "Mr. BenBarka, ni shi
