Performance art in people’s lives is not only limited to aesthetics, it also has the
social perspective that is part of the essence of art. In April this year “Can We
Talk About This?” by DV8 Physical Theatre, one of the top three dance troupe’s in
Europe and North America, explored topics related to international Islamic human
rights. Likewise, “Drought and Rain” by Company Ea Sola, to be performed in
September will explore topics that that are pertinent to all, world peace, war and
the human rights situation of the new citizens of Taiwan.

in theatrical art can be extended so that the people of Kaohsiung and Taiwan as a
whole address topics relating to new citizens and, moreover, hope that the people
of the city can pay attention to the Vietnamese new citizens who live around them
and together come to enjoy this art and cultural feast, sharing one another’s life

“Drought and Rain” is an epic dance from Vietnam that has toured the world.
Kaohsiung has over 10,000 new citizens from Vietnam and the next generation is
being born, growing up and gradually entering society. “The theater performance
cannot be detached from the audience”; we warmly invite Kaohsiung’s Vietnamese
new citizens to bring their families to Jhihde Hall in Kaohsiung Cultural Center and
take part in the city’s cultural life and enjoy history and culture and a life story from
their motherland.
“Hạn hán và cơn mưa” là một tác phẩm múa

Speaker: Kang Nuo-xi (Author of Catalogue of Taiwanese Door Gods)
The brilliant door gods painted on Taiwanese doors follow in the footsteps of the long tradition of Chinese
figure painting. The characters of the gods make strive for individuality, and to express the lifelike, vital, nature
of the gods and ensure that the images both fully display ethnic character and simultaneously express the
individual style of the god or painter and many other significant things. Walking into a temple, the splendid door
gods which confront the visitor capture their eyes, and simultaneously produce a religious atmosphere, giving
us a feeling of good fortune and safety in our hearts.

The Great, Happy Cultural Experiences Discussing the History and Culture of the
Pingpu Tribe in Jiasian District
9/09 Sun. 19:30
Thinking Fondly on the Past- 2012 TAE
Immediate Experience Concert Series Tour
Performance
Speaker: Jian Wen-min (Assistant Professor, Center of General Education, Kao Yuan University,)
Most of the Pingpu of Jiasian belonged to Tavorlang (Taivoan) group, and they were also known as the Daman
Tribe. In order to pursue a more suitable way of life, they moved from the Yujing area of Tainan City, maintaining
their earlier contentment with their lives, and living attitudes which emphasized sharing love and happiness.
Through a long period of experience, and experiencing the interaction between history and reality, the speaker
shares: how did they calculate costs? How did they organize holidays and ceremonies? And how did they
manage community relationships? In the process the audience will experience the mystery of Taiwan’s diverse
ethnic happiness culture.
■Performing unit: TAE -Taiwan Artists Ensemble
■Ticket price: NT$300 (Sold at Artsticket system, 7-ELEVEN ibon, Hilife)
■Tel: Ms. Lian 0981402365 or Gangshan Cultural Center Service Desk 07-6262620
This year, "TAE Immediate Experience Concert" has chosen two characterful representatives:
Rispighi, the Italian composer of the early 20th century who represents Italy, and Edvard
Grieg, the most important composer in Norwegian history, using the performance of
these pieces to bring modern audiences close to the popular feeling of the time, and feel
the romance of thinking fondly on the past, and by the “immediate experience” they have
created, through the methods of "projection" + "explanation" + "real-time performance",
making classical music simple.

■Venue: KMFA Lecture Hall, The Basement Floor
■Time: Sunday, 14:00-16:00

Lu Weng’s Brush Zen Calligraphy Couplet
Joint Exhibition
Speaker: Chang, Yun-chih (Writer & Editor)
Australia: a lonely continent isolated in the Pacific, it was once seen as the ultimate playground of
explorers, and was also once seen as a “deathtrap” by British criminals. Due to its isolation from other
continents, the evolution of its flora and fauna and aboriginal culture are unique in the extreme, forming
astonishing natural and social scenery. This lecture will introduce this great continent with two hundred
years of “civilization” from the perspectives of climate, water and land, flora and fauna, and history,
narrating how a piece of wasteland changed into paradise.
8.19 Choosing a Good Coffee, for Doing a Good Deed and Loving the Earth
Speaker: Lan, Chi-hang ( Gavagai Coffee Shop Manager)
Many high-quality coffee beans come from 3rd-world countries (such as Ethiopia), where food,
healthcare, and education are all extremely backwards, while the high-quality beans they produce are
sold for high prices, how is it that the farmers’ living environments have been slow to improve? What’s
more, every minute 60 tons of rainforest disappears each minute to make way for the cultivation
of coffee trees and other cash crops, how can our strength be brought to bear on all of the above
problems?
8.26 Thomson and the Earliest Taiwanese Photography
Speaker: Chuang, Ling (Chairman of the Society of Photographic Museum and Culture of Taiwan)
This lecture introduces John Thomson himself and his experience of photography in Taiwan, the
characteristics and meaning of all of the photos he took in Taiwan, and discusses the earliest
photographic history of Taiwan, and uses this to both cast an eye over the past and look onward to the
future.
Attending: Free attendance- no need to buy tickets or book, please enter the lecture theater 30 minutes before the lecture begins.
After the lecture ends, all participants can get bookmark and also win:
1. Lecture hall present: exchange 4 bookmarks for an art gift (please exchange them at the front desk).
2. 10%discount on all purchases when you present a bookmark from the Eslite store in Kaohsiung ad Pingtung District. (Except magazines, discount
items, reference books, Eslite gift vouchers, and audio or video products), vouchers expire on the 31st December 2012.
The Zen Calligraphy Master of Huang-Hua shan is also known as Lu Fu, Lu Weng, the Grassland
Painter, and proposed “Brush Zen Calligraphy.” “Brush Zen Calligraphy” is a method of calligraphy
which combines the body, mind, paper, brush, ink, and characters. These Zen couplets were all
chosen by the Master Huang, and all of those whose work is exhibited have completed profound
work through living lines.

Taneda, has kept to this creative concept, deftly producing fantastic scenes in countless movies,
bringing the imagination of movies before audiences from nothing to full realization. 26 movies, including
Kill Bill Vol. 1, Seediq Bale, Hula Girls were originally imagination with no real existence; how is it that
they came to be scenes telling all kinds of story which made audiences marvel?
Yohei Taneda’s World of Film Exhibition will bring you through photography, concept sketches, scene
models, and other precious exhibits, walking into the magical world of film, where reality and fabrication
merge. What’s more, Studio Ghibli has been invited to produce a life-sized scene of the Borrower
Arrietty’s room, enter the world of the little people, transform into a little person and look on the worlda unique experience you can’t miss!

In this era of ever-changing technology advancement and cultural concept
innovation, video art is playing a role of growing importance in the domain
of art. Consequently, for the Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (TIVA),
apart from invited artists, an international call for artists is also held. Totally
over 100 video works by artists from 23 countries have been submitted. This
exhibition also marks the first partnership between the Kaohsiung Museum
of Fine Arts and the Hong-gah Museum in holding an exhibition that displays
only video works. This exhibition features the video works from the first
and second TIVA exhibitions - “Dwelling Place” and “Eattopia.” From the 55
works on view by Taiwanese and international artists, viewers can see how
the artists use the creative medium of video to subtly interpret and explore
our collective memories about the different facets and hazards of modern
cultures related to food and living environment.

“Though outback and bush myths remain seminal to our culture, there is no doubt that the Australian collective consciousness is
now urban.” Said Ivan Rijavec, Co-creative Director of the NOW and WHEN Australian Urbanism exhibition.
The exhibition at the Australian Pavilion at the 12 th Venice Architecture
Biennale was the most successful project to date. Through the support of the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia, the organizer Australian
Institute of Architects had been continuing this successful project to tour the
exhibition internationally since 2011. This exhibition features five of Australia’s
cities as they are "NOW", before dramatically representing futuristic urban
environments as they may be "WHEN" we reach 2050 and beyond. Using
ground-breaking 3D stereoscopic technology of which Australia is now the
forefront, this exhibition showcases the Australian architectural imagination,
allowing visitors to move around a range of existing and hypothetical urban
environments. In the exhibition, architecture is used as a medium to express
the psychological and emotional reactions to the present and the future,
and the urban visions are presented in terms of spirit rather than practical
solutions to problems.

Midlife Crisis- Art Confronts
Life's Transformations and
Attitudes
How should an artist address the craziness and rebellion of middle age? This
exhibition takes 16 artists as its blueprint. Most of these artists broadly cast
their gaze on such aspects as society, politics, culture, history, and gender
between the ages of 40 and 50, and they also examine their selves from the
perspectives of the individual, family, lust, and the soul. They transform their
individual thoughts and subtle emotional impressions into artistic energy in the
wake of their differing early environments, learning backgrounds, and working
environments, and engage in constant self-construction and self-challenge. The
works displayed in this exhibition include paintings, videos, installations and
hand writings. By transforming art's emotional forms into energy through crisis,
different artistic languages are formed and the great talents of the artists are
revealed.

Into Society: Critical Realism
in Taiwanese Photographic Arts Since 1990
Amidst the changing and transition of the concept of photography over the past years,
the development of realistic photography in Taiwan took a direction drastically different
from traditional photography. Photographers today in Taiwan have expanded the realm
of “photographic arts,” taking interest in a more diversified variety of themes and using
more energetic and experimental expression forms. Some photographers have worked
individually on long-term photography projects; some have cooperated on teamwork
projects. Curated by May-ling Chang, this exhibition showcases the works by 27 realism
photography artists/groups in Taiwan. The works are critical representations of and indepth reflections upon different social and cultural facets of Taiwan through the creative
rhetoric of the artists.

Chen Lee-kuang: Flower Appreciation Trilogy
Flower appreciation is a poetic and culturally sophisticated activity with a long history. However, it seems to be gradually
forgotten in the modern life marked with technology advancements at a neck-breaking
pace. Through her artistic creations, Chen is committed to reminding people of the leisurely
and laid-back pace of life in the past and the necessity of seeking something more spiritual
in modern life. The exhibition is composed of “Full Bloom,” “Flying White” and “Sentimental
Attachment,” each of which displays works using unique creative media and expression
methods to interpret the sentiments behind flower appreciation. The composition using
mixed media converted into digital imagery gives Chen’s works a sense of modernity and
technology as if they were works from the future expressing the nostalgia for flowers.

Hung Ken-shen is an outstanding modern ink painter in Taiwan, who also dedicates himself to
promoting the art development in Kaohsiung. Through his innovative ink paintings, he stays true
to his ideals of art, creating an abundance of works of diversified styles. Displaying nearly one
hundred representative works of Hung’s since his youth, this exhibition can be said to be the
most comprehensive research exhibition of his art. Hung has tried different kinds of themes,
ranging from natural landscape to social phenomena, and demonstrated his persistence as an Hung Ken-shen / On the Street /
artist in pursuing unlimited possibilities of artistic creation. His works serve as mirrors, reflecting Ink and acrylic on canvas /

John Thomson
Window to the East:
The Journey to Formosa, China
and Southeast Asia 1865-1871
In 1871, John Thomson captured the images of Ta-kow (Takao/Dagou, now Kaohsiung) Harbour
via his camera on his trip to Formosa (Taiwan), leaving us beautiful early photographic records
of Kaohsiung. Through his camera lens, the oriental and poetic images of Ta-kow Port against a
vast sky and ocean demonstrate a type of unique rhetoric of image aesthetics.
This exhibition mainly displays a total of 250 photographic works by Thomson of Formosa, China
and Southeast Asia, allowing viewers to travel back in time and to experience the unique cultural
and social facets of Asia over 100 years ago. In addition to capturing the micro-history of Asia,
the works also reflect Thomson’s unique viewpoints and emotional responses when he first
encountered the exotic Oriental cultures rich in historical profoundness and inner serenity after
thousands of years of development and refinement.

Wungguli, an Arnhem Land Djambarruyngu word, means “spirit” and “shadow” and came to describe photographic image.
Shadows are our souls which we can never leave; nor can our shadows exist independent of us. The history of Aboriginal people
is that of figures, of numbers and of shadows. Prominent Aboriginal figures that dot the historical Australian landscape carry a
shadowy-halo edge of Aboriginality only seen and recognized by most
people at certain fleeting moments of intense emotional, social and
spiritual exposure. Shadowlife addresses these moments of intensity
through the photo-based practices of nine international renowned
contemporary Australian Aboriginal artists who embrace moving image
and photography with all its directness, theatricality and immediacy by
confronting stereotypes and acting out scenarios.
The directness of photography allows each artist to engage with sociopolitical issues of Aboriginality and the shadow cast by the experiences
of different communities rendered invisible by the vagrancies of
dispossession. Each artist has been chosen because they make
work that creates a space for personal and political considerations,
sometimes tinged with a bittersweet humor. In command of their
medium, these artists undermine the ethnographic legacy of
photographic stereotypes with potent images that confront, assault and
lacerate.

In a social context deteriorated by a countrywide economic crisis, the life of several people will be
turned upside down after they meet Cecile, a character who symbolizes desire.
Four women, from different countries, are married in different districts in Taiwan and become the
new immigrants. Diverse personalities, varied destinies - either warm or sad or absurd… It’s their
stories, and our stories.

A page from the history of Taiwanese studying in America is like the political and economic
history of Taiwan- every student who studied in America brought America’s unique national
status and culture to Taiwan, which had an important influence on Taiwan’s development.
This exhibition looks back on the history of Taiwanese students studied in the U.S., and calls
up their memories of studying in America through the things they used in America every day,
and also gives visitors a glimpse into studying abroad, both past and present.

What kind of artifacts are left by a given background in time and space?
The late Qing and early Republican period was a turbulent era in which old thought was
replaced with new; the accoutrement, textile, and golden ornaments used by the Han of
the time reflect the elegance of the era, and preserve its historic imprints. This exhibition
allows you to savor the fashion aesthetics of the past Taiwanese through modern exhibition
techniques used to display carefully- selected artifacts, and compares them with modern
ones by re-annotating modern golden cultural and creative products, thereby revealing the
rich meaning and design elements of traditional craft, and comparing the appearance of the
two eras.
