Volunteer Project: Conduct a Book Drive
Description: Conduct a book drive for fiction books,
new and like-new, for children and teens ages
birth to 18. Book’em will give them to children and
teens in Davidson County who do not have books
of their own. Holding a book drive is as easy as
selecting dates and a collection site, spreading the
word, and collecting the books. Book’em needs
more than 10,000 books to give away in November
and December through local charity children’s gift
programs.

For its Street Outreach program, Oasis Center needs

Volunteer Project: Sponsor a Student
Description: YCAP-YMCA is an organization that
serves at-risk youth and their families in East
Nashville. YCAP’s programs focus on improving
academics, building positive relationships, tackling
life’s struggles, and having fun together as the YCAP
family through a variety of activities, projects, and trips.
Each year the holiday season is a chaotic one for
YCAP. It is the goal of YCAP to give each of its
families at least one gift per family member at
Christmas time, recognizing this might be the only
one they receive all season. Many of the families
are in need of extra assistance, and for those, YCAP
looks for Christmas Sponsors to help. Each student
fills out a Christmas wish list, including clothing sizes,
gift ideas, etc. Then, the sponsors are given this
information to purchase gifts for one child.
Not all sponsors have to buy multiple gifts for a child.
YCAP is grateful for any help offered! There is a great
need in this community. With your help, YCAP can help
bring smiles and joy to these students and families!

Volunteer Project:
Holiday Heroes - Make Holiday Gift Boxes
Description: As part of the Holiday Heroes program,
individuals and groups can assemble small gift boxes
that are used to wrap the donated gift cards Youth
Villages receives for its teens for the holidays. Many
teens request gift cards for the holidays so they
can shop for their own clothing. To make the cards
a more special gift, volunteers will wrap them in a
gift box. The boxes can be made out of heavy card
stock paper, new and old holiday cards, construction
paper, etc. The boxes need to be big enough to
enclose a standard-size gift card. The gift card boxes
can be assembled at a scheduled date and time at
the Youth Villages Nashville office or at a location
convenient for the volunteers.

delivered December 2 through December 5.

Volunteer Project: Holiday Heroes Program
Description: As a Holiday Hero, you can help bring
smiles to more than 1,200 Middle Tennessee children
during the holidays. The Holiday Heroes program
gives each child receiving services the opportunity
to fill out a wish list for three gifts. Youth Villages
then sends these wish lists to community volunteers
who sign up to “adopt” a child for the holidays.
Volunteers (or “Heroes”) are asked to spend
between $75 and $100 per child to fulfill their top
three holiday wishes. Volunteers may “adopt” one
or more children or a sibling group. Gifts should be
unwrapped, bagged together with the wish list in a
clear sack and the child’s name should be written on
the outside of the bag.
Date and time: Gifts should be delivered between
December 2 and December 5.

Holiday Heroes – Stuff a Holiday Stocking
Description: As a part of the Holiday Heroes
program, individuals and groups are needed to
organize holiday stocking parties to fill stockings
with toiletries and small items for children in state
custody. A lot of the children served by Youth
Villages live well below the poverty line and are in
need of basic toiletries. Providing a stocking filled
with these items lets these children know that they
matter to the community. Groups can organize
donation collections for stockings, toiletries, and
other small items (lip balm, gum, candy/chocolate, gift
cards to McDonalds, Wal-Mart and Subway, makeup,
nail polish, decks of cards, etc.). Volunteers can stuff
the stockings together as a fun volunteer project.

Volunteer Project: Disaster Action Team
(DAT) Holiday Coverage
Description: Volunteers are needed to be on-call to
respond to direct-client needs resulting from singleor multi-family disasters, including home fires.
Volunteers will ride along with a DAT Captain and
other trained team members to provide comfort,
compassion, and non-medical aid to those in need.
Volunteers must be available to attend a brief
orientation at the Nashville Chapter Office at 5:30
p.m. on November 14 or December 10.

Fannie Battle Caroling for Kids
Description: Caroling for Fannie Battle has been a
holiday tradition in the Nashville community since
1916. Each year, families, neighbors, churches, schools,
and companies carol door-to-door, collecting donations
for Fannie Battle. The donations received from
caroling enable Fannie Battle to provide high-quality
childhood education to over 100 at-risk children.
Steps to create a caroling team:
1.Contact Fannie Battle with your name, number,
and where you would like to carol – you can even
request specific streets.
2. A caroling volunteer will contact you to verify the
street and ensure it’s not already being caroled.
3. A time will be arranged to deliver everything you
need: song sheets, fliers, and detailed instructions.
Online versions of the materials will also be available.
4.Get your group together and decide which
evening you will be caroling. On the night of,

Volunteer Project: Celebrate Refugees
and their Accomplishments!
Description: This winter, NICE will be holding its
annual celebration to honor the accomplishments
of the students in the ESL, after-school, citizenship,
leadership, and employment programs. Come help
as NICE and its clients have a party, complete with
food, music, a keynote speaker, and presentation
of certificates. Volunteers are needed to help with
child care, create certificates, serve food, and sign in
guests. This is a great opportunity to see the many
successes in the refugee community and encourage
the participants as they move forward.

Tree Planting along Mill Creek
Number of volunteers needed: 50
Description: Volunteers are needed to help plant
tree saplings along Mill Creek. In 50 years, one tree
provides $130,750 in total benefits including oxygen,
air pollution control, and storm water drainage. Mill
Creek is a tributary of the Cumberland River, and
is prone to flooding. During the 2010 flood, Mill
Creek’s flash flooding devastated the community
and caused millions of dollars in property damage.
Planting trees along this creek will help reduce
future flooding.

Volunteer Project: Prepare Dinner at Safe
Haven
Description: Individual and group volunteers are
needed to provide and prepare dinner for Safe
Haven residents. Each night, Safe Haven hosts
between 25 and 40 people for dinner. Volunteers
will have full use of the Safe Haven kitchen. After
cooking, the Safe Haven staff encourages you to
sit down and eat with its residents. This is a unique
chance to converse with diverse individuals working
hard to make major changes in their lives.

Sponsor a Family: Safe Haven will provide you
with the sizes for the kids and parents, along with a
couple of “wish list” items for each family or family
member. The positions fill quickly, and your group
may have to choose another option if all families are
receiving gifts. If you are interested in this position,

Shop from Safe Haven Target and Wal-Mart
Wish Lists: Consider supporting the daily needs
at Safe Haven by purchasing household items for
program graduates to stock their new homes,
helping make a child’s birthday a special day, or
adding to the Movie Library. Items needed for any
of these areas can be found on Safe Haven’s Target
and Wal-Mart Wish Lists. Don’t know what to
choose? Consider a gift card. When shopping from
the wish lists, use Jennifer Reason or Safe Haven as
the first and last names to search for the lists. For

Housewarming Package: Help Safe Haven provide
families with things that will warm their living spaces.
When Safe Haven families complete their stay and
move into their own apartments, they don’t have
household items. They need things like pots and
pans, crock pots, coffee makers, bedding (sheets,
comforter and pillows), towels, shower curtains, dish
rags, dishes, bake ware, utensils, and cups. Contact

Christmas Cheer: Please help Safe Haven lift
the spirits of homeless families during the holiday
season by participating in the Christmas Cheer
Campaign. Send a Christmas card with words of
encouragement to Safe Haven and they will deck
the walls to show families that the community
cares. Also, please consider enclosing a small gift

Corporate Angel Tree Sponsors
Description: Businesses and corporations can host
an Angel Tree in their offices so that employees can
easily pick an Angel to adopt this Christmas. The
Salvation Army will send you the Angel Tree Tags
based on your preferences and you will display them
in your office. You can then either bring the gifts
back to Salvation Army, or Salvation Army can come
and pick them up from you!

Salvation Army can use in-kind donations for many of
its programs.
• New, unwrapped toys for the Angel Tree Program especially for children ages 10 to 12.

• Coats, shoes, socks, gloves, hats, hand warmers,

Family program.

and put your pennies and other change in it every day
(Dollar bills and checks are welcome too). Encourage
friends, coworkers, and family to do the same! For
every $1 donated, Second Harvest can provide
four meals to hungry children, families and seniors.

Holiday Food Drive for TNFP
Description: The Nashville Food Project (TNFP)
provides nutritious, made-from-scratch meals to some
of Nashville’s most vulnerable residents. Through weekly
hot meals, TNFP introduces residents to a variety
of seasonal produce and healthy cooking styles. Its
pantry program provides ingredients and education
to encourage residents to prepare nutritious foods for
themselves. Help stock the TNFP pantry with healthy
staple foods from the list below. Items are distributed
from TNFP’s catering trucks directly to low-income
residents in Nashville communities.
